Chaplin In Venice

Eighteen Fifty Parfums Chaplin in Venice is one of the trio of original releases from this California-based brand in late 2017 and it’s my second favorite of the line after the boozy bourbon vanilla beast, Chateau. The whole line (the others being La Jolla and Black Dahlia) is great, though, all composed by Mahsam Raza of Dua fame, though without many updates of late from the brand, I’m not sure if they’re planning any more releases in the near future. It’s certainly fair to summarize Chaplin in Venice as a citrus/petitgrain-dominant fragrance but it’s bolder and richer than most citrus fragrances. As with Xerjoff Kobe, it’s the liberal use of petitgrain, at least to my nose, that is so distinctive. It’s fresh, slightly spicy, fairly dense, and a bit sharp, with bits of lavender, neroli, citruses, vetiver, tarragon, cedar, clove, and musk that foster a sort of year-round-friendly citrus fragrance that never feels too transparent, safe, or uninteresting. I frankly can’t think of a good analogy to another fragrance that quite hits this blend, specifically with the great performance that Chaplin in Venice has. I attribute the spiciness of the cloves and tarragon leaf and the sharpness to the lavender, primarily, with the petitgrain being the head of an otherwise citrus/woods/vetiver pyramid. The pricing of $85 for 50ml feels very reasonable, below what I believe to be a fair going rate of $2/ml for niche and independent perfumery, and while there’s no sampling service and I generally don’t advocate blind buying, I’d certainly encourage anyone interested to check this out. Chaplin in Venice is really a nice, versatile blend which, while feeling most appropriate on a warm weather day as a robust option, is nonetheless usable in an occasion in my estimation. It’s really an excellent composition by Mahsam Raza. 8 out of 10

What a stellar performer. Chaplin in Venice smells of quality and lasts the entire day. I did receive compliments. This rivals Aubres as my most long lasting citrus parfums. At less than $2 per ml. This is an absolute steal.
