Night Flower

It is so incredibly hard to write about something you love. Every time I write reviews on here I get butterflies in my stomach and worry if I'm even making any sense, since obviously the nature of leaving a comment is for the reference of others. I get so anxious and I take weeks before I'm comfortable enough to share my experience. I write endless notes and revise them, erase them, and rewrite them and once satisfied I begin writing my comment here and completely delete the weeks of notes I've taken because I feel my piece has awful cadence. But I think it's time, ready or not, to share my thoughts of Night Flower. University, around 1:30pm sometime in early May, I was walking back to my apartment I had just finished my morning classes. I was 20 years old and remembered having a very modest desk collection of fragrances. As I walked through the neighborhood of single-storied ranch homes towards my apartment I was coming onto a very rich and sweet smell by the sidewalk. I couldn't notice where it was coming from and I had imagined a lady had maybe passed a few minutes ago or just entered her home. But no, the street was entirely empty. The day was temperate, slightly dry with reviving gusts of wind. The most ideal weather for the transport of scent. Your typical early-summer-late-spring day. I finally made it to the floor of the small hill I usually took to get home. As I mounted the top of the hill I finally met the source of that beautifully rich sweet smell. It was a Lilac tree. In full bloom. Hanging just on the side of the someone's front yard, it's limbs low enough for me to hold and sniff like it was waiting to be admired. I was in disbelief that such a beautiful and rich smell could be found in nature much less in someone's yard. I was probably there for 30 minutes just brushing my hands down the clusters of flowers. Anyone watching would have thought I was a lunatic but I wouldn't have cared. I was in my element wishing one day I could find a fragrance that smelled like that moment. It is the weekend and I am in middle school. It is a Saturday and my parents were preparing for a bike trip. On days like this it is usually custom for my folks to make blueberry waffles for breakfast. The air in the house is thick and swirling with fatty, salty, bacon, buttery eggs and fruity blueberry waffles. With Night Flower every time I put it on it's a primal knee-jerk an instinctual flashback that overwhelms my emotions. I become silent and reduced. I am at home... Like that moment from the Disney movie "Ratatouille" where Anton Ego The Food Critic is finally broken and returns to his mother's kitchen. The smell of tuberose is complementary of many other flowers namely, gardenia, tiare, jasmine, lilac, frangipani(plumeria), lily, neroli and orange blossom. All these white flowers are suggestive of one another in their honeyed, nectar-like aspects but do carry their own unique quality's. Tuberose itself can have coconut, banana and almond aspects creamy, green and fatty, suggestive of milk and sweet. When people say tuberose is indolic this is in response to its sulfuric and spicy qualities that can sometimes smell a little ammoniated, more-so accentuated when the flower is wilting and dying. The tell-tale sign that natural tuberose exists in a composition is when it can display both its fruity aspects and its sulfuric aspects. Night Flower is an intoxicating phenom. Now my reference for tuberose and one of the best tuberose fragrances I've smelled along with Moon Bloom, Fougère Emeraude, and Tuberose and Moss all in the camps of such champions as Fracas, Carnal Flower and Fleur Poudrée du Musc. A beautifully cozy and rich Indian tuberose, the noblest of tuberoses in perfumery, that is milky and honeyed. How it is blended in Night Flower with cardamom, cinnamon and boozy patchouli is reminiscent of grapes but more-so of freshly baked blueberry pastries like blueberry pancakes, waffles or muffins. Though not intentionally a gourmand, Night Flower has slight hints of realistic culinary identity. Sweet, warm, comforting and tempting. There is a rich fatty, savory, somewhat suede-like quality that works compatibly with the introduction of the sulfuric facets of the Indian tuberose only to be dressed up properly by cinnamon, rich almond-y tonka bean with vanilla qualities and woody smokey birch keeping it smoothed-out, refined, sexy, woody and sophisticated. With origins from Mexico, tuberoses have expanded to many regions of the world. In India tuberoses are one of the most important ornamental flowers used in many religious ceremonies. A majority of Indian Tuberose is cultivated from the city of Mysore in the state of Karnataka where it is farmed and to a lesser extent in the state of Tamil Nadu. Night Flower in my humble opinion is drugging in its opulence almost to the point of spoiling its wearer. To me a hypnotic composition that can compromise one's balance. Unisex with excellent wear length and polite sillage that blends as an aura over the skin. I have found the fragrance that smells like that moment. To me it is undeniable. It is a masterpiece. My favorite of my Eris Favorites. 🧇🍇🥥💐 10/10

Oh you dirty girl. The kind you meet while crouched in an alley out the back of a nightclub, sucking down ciggies between sets from Sven Vath and Solomun. Eyes like saucers, hair tied back in a messy bun, the faint smell of sweat hanging in the air as the cool night air brushes her glowing skin. I digress. Something I’ve come to appreciate in perfumery is the ability to convey both the devilishly animalic and pure filth, while also building accords that come across as pristine and clean. It’s an act, of course. We all know there’s nothing pure about what’s about to happen, and just like that earlier encounter in the alleyway, things are about to get very carnal. In this instance, the depravity is balanced by something soft and creamy. The absence of sandalwood has me scratching my head as to what it might be, but presumably it’s a combination of the fleshy, buttery petals and lactonic warmth of tuberose, rounded by the plush, almond-like vanilla sweetness of tonka. I don’t know. Everything comes off sweet, laced with lashings of gentle spice. The creaminess flirts with drying out and for a moment I catch little edges that seem to have fallen to dust, but they’re fleeting, whimsical, enough to have me questioning my own nose, whether they were there at all. Any pretence of purity has all but gone, with a fleshy, indolic tuberose absolutely beaming through the opening softness. The musk doesn’t bother trying to play nice and arrives straight up filthy from the outset. It’s dirty, pissy, and everything I love about this style. I’ll be honest, I had to remind myself there was leather here. It’s not evident early, and when it does show up, it’s soft and suede-like, more textural than aromatic, like a big warm, furry hug. This is a stonkingly good perfume. I’m currently in my office and it’s permeating the whole place, coworkers giving me funny looks as they walk by. Maybe they too are reminded of wickedly good nights out, spent sitting in that alleyway with the girl of your dreams, back in the days before we all became boring.

Two of my favorite perfume accords, tuberose and leather, are slapped together in a perfume clearly aiming to be sexy fun. To my nose, Night Flower is more leather and spices forward than tuberose. The leather is the same skank-fest concoction of animalic musks that Antoine Lie deployed at Defcon 1 in Ma Bete, but toned down to conversational levels here. The tuberose comes through as its typical green and white floral, heady and musky self but, again, it's not what Night Flower is centered on; with the spices, cardamom and cinnamon are two that are noticeable, and the patchouli in the base, you could be forgiven for thinking the tuberose is a lot more like carnation. The final skin scent is a dirty and earthy patchouli with hints of tonka bean. This isn't some pretty little flower of your garden, stumbled upon in the darkness of night. This is someone daring, carnal, and sexy slinking around your bedroom; you're nervous because you smell the leather but you don't see it. What sort of surprise awaits you, and are you ready for it. Does Night Flower allow for a safe word?

I debated for awhile if I loved Night Flower and today I decided that I do. And that’s saying quite a lot since suede, the most dominant note in the composition, is often a problematic note for me. Here suede is presented in a warm, complex and smooth composition. If the feeling of comfort had a smell it would be Night Flower. I agree that their are similarities to Shalimar. But I also think Night Flower—with its beautiful powdery Tuberose flower—stands on its own. There’s a vintage quality to Night Flower, but it’s also sexy as all get out. There’s nothing off putting or dated in the bottle. And just when I swore off buying anymore Tuberose scents (I have many), along comes this mighty beast. Luckily the flower is mixed with spices and is not a bubblegum or heady perfume scent. Did I say that performance is stellar?

Night Flower, fantastic opening, slightly masculine vibe, aromatic, sexy. Has a slight vintage feel to it but equally modern. Hefty amount of patchouli but not particular earthy or dirty, blends in with the other notes harmoniously without screaming "patchouli!!" although very present. I was not expecting to like this as much as I do, but it's high on my want list. I don't find it overly complex but I do find it perfectly blended. It has almost an ever so slight Musc Ravageur feeling. It doesn’t smell “like” it but reminds me of it for some reason. This is my first sampling from Eris and I'm very intrigued and looking forward to the other two. Big thumbs up from me!

Without having references to this perfume, when I smelled it I thought: beautiful fresh cardamom that combines well with the patchouli in the background. The two of them are the narrators of this story. Between both, tangles and characters full of light and shadow: suede and some little floral notes, cinnamon slide, leaving velvety choruses, and a round global sensation. I see the familiarity with musc ravageur in the musky cinnamon and I see the familiarity with Shalimar in another way in the bergamot with the tonka and patchouli. What a beautiful development, like reading a good novel.

It’s called Night Flower and claims to be a tuberose scent, so naturally it’s ... an old school powdery leather, with no floral beyond a fleeting sweetness in the first few seconds! Confusional marketing strats aside, it’s a real killer. Same neighbourhood as Knize Ten, Lonestar Memories, closest perhaps to Lie’s own Tom of Finland. The animalic is subtle, a powdery castoreum that keeps this from becoming an anemic church-lady’s-new-handbag scent (*cough* Tuscan Leather). I love it, I’d just get some labelling tape and rename the bottle, “Cuir de Whatever”.

Night Flower. This is the best thing (new to me) that I've smelled in a long, long time. True, it is quite close to a very vintage Shalimar Parfum. Not, in my opinion, as good, but darn, this is nice! Makes me think of entering an expensive antique shop, wearing a well-loved leather jacket. There is an unusually smooth incense very prominent in Night Flower, and of course, gorgeous, but subtle, Tuberose. I love Cardamom, and it is terrific in this scent. Bravo, Barbara and Antoine! This is superb. Just put a FB on my want list as "next to purchase".

I bought a preview sample of this along with samples of Eris's other two first releases. They are all terrific, but this one really shook me. It's probably the most masculine of the three--smoky, leathery, medicinal. The fragrance is so in tune with the scent profiles I enjoy, that I feel it emanates from me rather than just sprayed or slathered on me. These are just first impression from a small sample, but so far I'm impressed.

God I love this. I bought the Eris discovery set, really to try Green Spell and Ma Bete, but it was this I kept going back to and now my sample is used up, I’m bereft. There is a floral note, but it’s not defining by any means; it’s warm spices and smoky leather over an earthy patchouli base. Sweet, heady and intoxicating.

This is so SO good. Birch is slightly smoky with some light cinnamon spice and indolic floral facets. To me the suede accord is blended perfectly between the birch, tuberose and spices. This creates a darker velvety purple shade in my mind. Perfectly unisex. Another gorgeous scent from the house of Eris.

Beautifully haunted tuberose, a velvet floral backdrop. Camphorous and green at first, with singed cardamon and astringent bergamot giving way to deep, dark cinnamon spiced leather. Hours later a creamy and plummy patchouli that sits so very close and blood red.

Gorgeous scent with realistic floral notes. Green and bright with creamy edges—just enough to make it smooth. Would add this to my collection if I didn't already own Frédéric Malle Carnal Flower. Carnal Flower has more punch and bigger sillage.

This is a comforting yet refreshing scent. It reminds me of ouzo/raki and freshly washed linen. There’s warmth to it. Leans more masculine, maybe even a bit fougère, but as a woman I really like it. Great in any weather.

Shalimar resemblance is there, plus recollections of my reckless youth I'd just as soon not detail. Ohlala

Smells fantastic, but doesn't last very long.

So this perfume is really not what I was expecting from something called night flower. That name suggests to me a big, indolic, searchlight jasmine, or a sopping wet tuberose, and I braced myself for nightblooming impact, but in actuality it's much more subdued. Night flower is a musky, mildly vanillic, floral perfume. Smells fleshy like orris and tonka. In fact it smells like tonka absolute as apposed to just coumarin or a usually much sweeter tonka accord. There's something perfect about the sweetness of real tonka and this perfume showcases it delicate nature perfectly. The opening few minutes do have a salty tuberose but it's more like that very delicate from enfluerage kinda stuff not a brutal indolic power house, or sweetened, bubblegum, affair. Tuberose is actually fascinating in it's facets and diversity as a perfume material. Here it's very fleeting and slight, but I like that. The drydown is really cuddly, musky, I personally really like it, it's rounded and creamy and base heavy, and although sadly I have a bit of a cold today or I think It would be a bit more present, it's a very subtle, skin scent, which occasionally emanates, lovely little wafts, it's a very personal fragrance for you or someone that gets very close. I've just noticed comparisons to musc ravageur....nah! I get that if I had to stick them in a subgenre together, I would , or descriptions in a review like this will be largely the same ballpark, but don't think this is a clone or riff on musc ravageur because it's not even close. I like it a lot, doesn't massively excite me but it's great quality perfume and an absolute pleasure to wear.

Another of the samples on my current testing spree, this is one of those juices I have warmed to much quicker than I expected to do so. Let’s be fully transparent: as a rather sweet fragrance, it was always going to be fighting an uphill battle against my personal preferences. And the patchouli thing, trendy as it is now, is always something that elicits ambivalence in me, having spent far too much time around hippies as a kid. And yet, it challenges my prejudices. Perhaps it’s the birch and/or suede (I really cannot claim to be expert enough to know with any conviction) but there is much that I like in this fragrance, a kind of spicy warmth that feels very honest with some notes that buck the trend. Cardamom, tonka bean or musk can always persuade me. So I guess here it’s an assault from multiple angles. This is one of those fragrances that is undeniably unisex and only the luddites on either end of the gender-stereotype spectrum could claim otherwise. For me personally, it is ultimately the sweetness that comes to the fore and that is what would make me personally stand back. However, if you like sweeter fragrances beyond the obvious, you should definitely give it a spin.

This one is definitely worth a try! I wasn't the biggest fan of this on paper, but loved it on skin. The opening is a bit odd, as I get something slightly chemical smelling...I'm guessing from the suede, but that doesn't last more than a minute or two and this starts to soften up. This is blended very well, so it's a bit hard to pick out individual notes. I largely get a soft and slightly gourmand suede, tonka (which actually smells like vanilla to me), spices, a bit of bergamot, and the patchouli is slightly chocolatey. Although this has a very different profile from Valkyrie by Sylvaine Delacourte, they have a similar vibe. This is not near as sweet or gourmand, and in my opinion this is more unisex than Valkyrie. This is really fantastic, and makes me want to try more from this house!

I'm fascinated by the variety of opinions here; this seems to smell a little different to everyone! I adored this scent upon first spray, but found myself wondering "what is that?", unable to pick apart the notes.I agree that there's a somewhat dusty mustiness like old books and antiques, but...I make my living selling antiques; I love that smell! I agree there are spices here, but the overall composition didn't seem too savory or "spice cabinet-y" to me at all. The tuberose came out pretty quickly and worked really nicely with the suede/etc. After an hour or two, the scent becomes a little less interesting (typical cardamom/bergamot combo can be detected), but some of the charm of the opening is definitely still there.

I ordered samples of all three of the Eris perfumes, this was my personal favorite. I found this fragrance to be on the extreme feminine side of unisex. I get a sweet spicy complex fragrance, not smoky or leathery to my nose at all. I definitely get the cardamom, patchouli and tonka bean .This smells remarkably similar to Roja Dove Amber Extrait (I even tested them side by side to see if it was my imagination), they are very similar. I'm very pleased since the Amber Extrait is a discontinued elusive unicorn of mine I will happily be buying a full bottle of this beauty. Definitely sample these fragrances since it seems that they perform differently for people, definitely affected by chemistry. This one is a love for me.

This reminds me of when I used to visit this vintage clothing store in Cambridge MA in the 90s named Oona's. They had a room full of old leather jackets and fur coats (real and faux). This reminds me of the way that room smelled. Aging suede leather and fur imbued with repeated wears of perfume from their previous owners. The tuberose isn't centered here, it lurks in the background, as perhaps part of those embedded perfumes on the lapels. The tonka paired with the leather accord here does remind me, much like it does with others, of Shalimar, which is somewhat of a shortcoming to Night Flower. It starts off with some intrigue but then makes me want to just wear Shalimar instead. Not bad, though!

wow, it's pretty and familiar from the beginning. i get a lot of tonka and cinnamon at first and it reminds me of musc ravageur/l de lolita lempicka. it's the same cinnamon. shortly after i get some smokiness, which i think is due to the combination of birch and suede. this is where it diverts from those other perfumes. it's much smokier and more traditionally masculine. after about 30-45 minutes, it's a bit less smoky, and while i sense a floral note, it is not reading as tuberose. an hour + in this smells a lot like musc ravageur, if memory serves. at this point it's warm and cozy, after a smoky beginning.

Night Flower is a beautiful perfume, but I don't smell the tuberose in this. It doesn't smell floral to me at all, instead it's a cozy ambery leather. The opening is pretty strong on the suede, birch, and spices, but the drydown is just gently spicy with cardamom, sweet and comfortable. I get the comparison to Shalimar, it is similar in some respects but less in your face I feel. Lasts just as long, but less enveloping, a bit gentler even though the suede note can be stronger and harsher in the opening.

What a pretty fragrance. Comforting, sensual and deep. In line with some vintage masterpieces like Shalimar. In fact it reminded me of it. This fragrance is for psychological mature man or a woman. If you like fruity-tootie, girly, sweet, light or barely there scents this one's not for you. I smell leather mixed with tonka and spices. It is like a warm hug. - Keeper

I would have bought a bottle of this if Musc Ravageur hadn't gotten to me several years ago. They're not exactly the same, but close enough to be redundant to have in the same collection. It would be silly to say one was better than the other.

Similar to some other commenters, on my skin this smells like pure spice. The tuberose is hidden under the cinnamon and tonka. If I really try, I can pick up on it. It is a really beautiful scent though - perfect for cold weather.

I bet this really shines when applied via spray, rather than dab, but I'm still getting the gist. Animalistic, airy/outdoorsy, hard to explain. It's got a dirty quality that I find really attractive. Leans masculine. 7.5/10

A very nice and warm fragrance, perfect for winter. It is a bit oriental and musky (doesn’t appear really flowery to my nose). But I like it a lot, very comfy and sexy; probably my next purchase.

a tuberose with a difference and instead of sending forth waves of creamy, bubblegum sweetness, Night Flower is all about spice and leather. It opens with a blast of dry spice that verges on the metallic before weaving into an austere tuberose that has more of a green emphasis, the heart is a soft leather accord who ends into a suede-like softness. The musks blur the edges between all these disparate elements. After an opening who looks like Musc Ravageur (the first hour) I find the evolution quiet austere, intriguing but out of focus, spicy but a bit tasteless... A nightflower needs a spotlight to be seen and it never turned on...i stay lost in a musky fog. Maybe a good perfume if indeed you looking for a flanker of Musc Ravageur but like for this last one why would you pay the price of the niche to just have the same result as using some tonka bean absolute (who smells already like a strong spicy musk ).

Sleek sophisticated woody floral musk with some nods to Musc Ravageur. It opens briefly with birch, cinnamon, cardamom and bergamot. The similarly brief heart has mostly Indian tuberose and slight suede. The perfume settles fast into a sweet powdery base of synthetic musk, tonka bean and a hint of patchouli. The unisex scent has moderate sillage and good longevity. Nice but not hugely exceptional. Enjoy!

Suede maxxing. The most accurate suede note I've ever smelled. Medicinal and gassy. I like it, but it is a novelty for me.

If this was a candle, I'd buy it no problem

Eris Night Flower does have the Shalimar similarity, though simpler, plainer, more boheme, more unisex.

Woody oriental. Don’t really get any florals so the name is a bit confusing (on my skin anyhow).

Really good, but the name is a misnomer. Starts with warm spices and suede, with a vanillic amber base throughout. Emphasizes cardamom. The spices recede and what remains is a slightly smoky, suede/musk +vanilla patchouli with lightly mentholic floral components. I also get a pretty piercing black pepper note. Nothing particularly reminiscent of tuberose in my opinion. Very similar to Chanel’s coromandel but less gourmonde and certainly much more interesting. Great stuff. Love this. But don’t be mislead by other reviewers. This is not some avante garde original masterpiece. This is a twist on coromandel, albeit an extremely good one. Antoine Lie has taken a page from Jacques Polge. Adds its own interesting and unique elements, especially in the first hour or two. In the top/mid, this is very different to coromandel. But under the hood, in the deep drydown, the classic coromandel/richwood dna rears its head. It is 95% similar to coromandel in the base. Which is not a bad thing neccesarily, don’t get me wrong. Coromandel is one of the best smells ever, but let’s call a spade a spade.

This one smells vintage, like a cosmetic vintage fragrance, with that powdery note, tonka beans, and some patchouli, slight floral, and night factor The one of the three that i would go for, but nothing rare or unique other than it is wearable and doesn't disturb while wearing it beside blended well and could go in different more directions when cooled down. Edit (25th Jan 2021) After 4+ years.. This blend is addictive! i believe the white floral used (majorly magnolia) mixed with a mild sweet that whiffs between cloying and mild is quite insatiable! the bergamot, birch, and patchouli are forming a weird combination that makes this blend go back and forth between herbal and sweetness! While the tonka, & cinnamon are adding an addictive factor to the blend! Those 3 trilogy are a complete different standalone addictive pieces! Beautiful.

This was love at first sniff, so warm, so comforting...and then... after all of ten seconds... WHAT THE HELL IS THAT? A medicinal note appears, like an odd stranger at a party who is a bit disturbing, a bit fascinating, too sexy for their own good. You're not in the mood for this enigmatic gatecrasher, yet you cannot stop smelling your wrist and keeping a discrete eye on what they're up to. Which is blending into the background but regularly catching your eye and smiling at you knowingly. This is a very unusual perfume and I do really like it.The warmth is always there and occasionally I get a minty vibe too that sits nicely blended with a smokiness. Lots to think about. It is intriguing. But then who wants a boring perfume?

Night Flower is a misleading name, as florality (from tuberose) is only a faint aspect of this blend. Indeed much of the note pyramid seems a bit doubtful compared to the actual scent. Smelling Night Flower blindly, I found it to be powdery, ambery, and somewhat like incense. Trying to jibe this sincere experience with the provided notes leads to an imperfect fit: powdery (Suede), ambery (Tonka), incense (Birch tar) I will agree there is some spiciness provided by cardamom and cinnamon. Regardless of note accuracy, I actually do find Eris' Night Flower to be a suede-powdery, tonka-ambery, incense-lit delight. Just don't buy this blindly thinking you will be getting anything like a tuberose-rich, white floral scent.

I scoffed at the "reminds me of" section naming Musc Ravegeur and Labdanum 18. This was so refreshing and different at first that I went right away to put a bottle into my cart, but as it wore on, it really did remind me of those two I mentioned, but more so Labdanum 18. I went ahead and sprayed my bottle of Labdanum over the top after awhile because although it reminded me of it, I needed and wanted the actual Labdanum, which I've decided I love more, and will stick with that for now. I really wished the tuberose was more upfront because it's hard to smell it at all. However, not wishing to write this off entirely, I will buy another sample and give it another try.

gently animalic leather worn close to the skin, warmed by cinnamon. bit of cigarette smoke wafts in the background and fleshy hints of tuberose, all rounded out with tonka but in a way that suggests bodily warmth instead of leaning anywhere towards a vanilla-dessert situation. might seem like a winter pick but I have really enjoyed wearing it in the heat as well. sexy but not lewd, grown-up, delicious

This is my first review on Fragrentica. I started with a sample of this and knew it was FB from the first inhale. The fragrance morphs so beautifully but I find myself respraying it to get that initial cardamom blast.The longevity is great, can’t comment on sillage because I haven’t been around people wearing it. What can I say... I’m in love!

I've owned this for years but don't reach for it often. However, when I do reach for it I'm reminded of why I love it! It's mostly suede and spice on me. No florals to be detected. Very rich, earthy, sensual. It leans masculine but is great for women too, in my opinion.

Starts as a smooth woody scent. Where's the flower? And then it gets plastic-y and I scrubbed it off. Just very synthetic on my skin. I would really have loved to get what millerhighloaf did! that sounds amazing. Bottom line, sample before buying.

Tuberose that has been crushed, mixed with some cardamom water and then poured into an ice cube tray to be frozen at the back of a meat freezer that has been recently wiped down with a citrusy smelling cleaner. Really weird and not unpleasant.

I get a comforting cotton-sweater-feeling with this fragrance. Notes of suede and bergamot coincide nicely, which allow for a soft sweet while maintaining strong masculinity. This one reminds me of Giorgiomani Pi.

Lovely and powerful incense-like scent, to me. I can see where people get a vintage vibe but it is definitely unmistakably modern. Very unique scent. Communicates power and rebelliousness.

Beautiful sexy suede with echos of tonka and a feminine air about it all... Something about it reminds me of the sweet spices in dr pepper... I really like it.

I’m not a fan of suede or leather notes. Without that element, this would be lovely, warm, creamy and rich.
