Indonesian Oud Eau de Toilette

In regards to the talk of discontinuation.. while I could be wrong, I believe that what's happening is that all prior incarnations of Essenze fragrances, all of which are EDTs, are being replaced with newly released EDP versions. So technically yes, this specific EDT version that most are familiar with is being discontinued.. but Indonesian Oud will live on as an EDP, though it's yet to be seen how similar the EDP will be. This review is for the EDT, which I was just lucky enough to procure a bottle of at a fantastic price (as beautiful as it is, I'd never pay the full ~$220 MSRP). Gorgeous. There is absolutely, without question, REAL Oud of exceptional quality in this juice & it is immediately apparent. While I do own a good number of Montale Ouds/Aouds, I am not familiar with Aoud Night... but the comparison that most immediately occurs to me is that this reminds me of a more refined, less dirty, & much more wearable sibling of Oud Ispahan (which I am also very fond of). However, there is also immediately something completely unique about this scent that sets it apart from all the other dozens of Oud-Rose combos, which I presume is the interplay of the bergamot, patch, & amber joining the deliciously juicy rose (& this rose IS sooo juicy, I f*ckin love it). The result is kind of waxy, spicy but not at all in a conventional sense, & wet... very hard to put in to words but it is absolutely unique. As it dries down, the rose never entirely disappears, but the oud certainly becomes more pronounced accompanied by a very sensual amber. Sillage is definitely good & the longevity is fantastic, eventually becoming a strong, warm skin scent that lasts all night & is still there to kiss your senses in the morning. I can only hope that the new EDP retains all of these qualities, as I honestly don't feel that there's anything here that really needs to be improved. This stuff is classy AF & but I feel will also fit any stylish individual for any occasion and every season, & will seduce anyone in it's vicinity... & only gets better the closer they get to your skin. I am very, very impressed; this one gets quite high marks from me. As I said, I can't speak to the EDP.. but if you can find a bottle of the EDT & this sounds like your kind of jam.. don't hesitate. P.S. As for the alleged Aoud Night similarities.. as I said I haven't smelled it, but as someone who loves his Montales & is very familiar with the way they do their oud/aoud... I just can't imagine it being nearly this smooth & refined (which is not at all a bad thing, just is what it is & now I'm very curious to smell AN as well). Much Love, Wood Pipes

I know it is a men's fragrance but I fall in love with it since I first smelled it today. It is again the rose and oud combination which is so popular these years but I never get bored with it because there are always eminent perfumists who are so clever and talented that they can create a thousand different formalae even with the same combination. Oud is the most prominent note as its name suggests while rose being the second, creating a deep, dark, fancy illusion that hypnotized you to kill your own self. Furthermore, amber enhances its cleaness and patchouli gives it a cold vibe, preventing it from too cloying and treacly. I would say the scent is ostentatious whilst at the same time provocative and voluptuous. It is like casting a spell on others, causing them to fall for you like moth flying to the fire. You know it is dangerous but you can't help but leaping into the fire and burn yourself to death for that deadly beautiful though indifferent person. Your ration tells you to stay away from him/her albeit your body act against your will. It is poison handed to you by Satan leading to hell. It is the emblem of Lucifer. It is sin. I can see some similarities between Indonesian Oud by Ermenegildo Zegna and Penhaligon's the Uncompromising Sohan in the Portraits Collection. Both of their main notes are oud and they both have the characteristic of tempting you to smell it over and over until you fall in love and cannot endure without it, just like opium. All of us are addicts.

Beautiful oud fragrance. Beautifully blended. This is a smooth barnyard style oud, tamed by the rose. Much safer than the recent "Strength" of their new line. But horribly priced. That said, given the quality and good projection, it's worth it (unlike some $15 bottle that may have good scent but miserable projection... cf Ferrari and Varvatos...) Zegna's Chicago store confirmed that this one, like the 4 other frags from the Essenze line that are still in store, will share the stage with the 5 fragrances of the new "Elements of Man" line until Spring 2019, and will then be discontinued. Great perfume, Fall/Winter evenings, 30+ Edit: this is similar to Guerlain Santal Royal. That said SR has rose forward with an educated oud in the background, while Zegna IO has a clear barnyard-ish oud note in front of the rose. SR is safer to pull-out for oud beginners (and crowds around them). If money is not an issue, I'd suggest Zegna IO everyday, because of the niche quality. Otherwise, Guerlain SR is a great crowd-pleasing compromise, especially given its current pricing at online discounters. Edit2: I tested the Indonesian Oud EDP, that has replaced the EDT. No differences to my nose, just a little stronger in the opening, and probably lasts even longer (was there a need?)

I have EDT and EDP, EDP is my signature for quite some time. The main difference is EDP is more smoky and a little more long lasting. I am getting 10-12 hours with 5 sprays. The base is better then EDT, at first application EDT is more airy and rosy. But in overall EDP is fuller and more masculine. Regarding the scent, at initial application bergamot give a slight sour touch and there is a spicy note (I can’t name it) gives a feeling of depth. And in 2 hours time the rosy oud is dominating the scent and sits on your skin for 5-6 hours. At final stage I am feeling very little sweet Smoky patchouli and it vanishes from your skin like that. The total duration on me was at least 10 hours. I can’t say it is a projection monster it site in your skin for long time but silent. That’s what I prefer on perfumes. I didn’t get any compliments but we speak frankly I wear my perfumes for myself not for the others. In conclusion I can see this parfum thicker a little more long-lasting less rosy more oudy masculine fragrance. I may suggest this perfume to whom once elegance in silent manner and wears perfume only for himself. 10/10

Finally, here it is, a replacement for Tom Ford Noir de Noir. For less money you get an even better scent, AND twice the amount. This is great. I'll keep this review sweet and short. Indonesian Oud opens with a strong medicinal oud that settles within a minute or two to give way to a sultry and very dark rose. There's very little musk in this one unlike NdN, and it's not smoky. If you look for incense or myrrh in your rose oud this will not be your cuppa tea. During the dry down the rose gets sweeter on a fainter wood base, and the result is a magical, very slightly jammy rose that spells luxury. edit: Good longevity, EVEN BETTER projection-- my brother smelled me from another room after I did 2 sprits in the bedroom (my "moderate projection" statement was obviously faulty). P.s. I think Dior Ispahan Oud is a bit dirtier than this one on the wood, but the rose note is the same as that in Zegna. Great quality. P.p.s I wonder what would happen if you layer this with Javanese Patchouli... probably an animal on a whole different level ... ;)

Super skanky so beware! I recommend if you're sampling, to first spray on paper and understand the dry down progression. The opening is very VERY strange but give this one a chance, it's gearing up for 30 minutes to put on a wonderful show - we all gotta stretch too ya know! After everything settles, this becomes a beautiful and gorgeous fragrance. The oud comes in as ultra luxurious (almost leathery) and I can pick up some patchouli. What really grabs me in this scent is the animalic undertone carefully blended with rose. That Calabrian Bergamot is an X factor here too! I always like to test longevity overnight as I sleep and this one had projection when I woke up! Beast. The only one I've tested of the heavy hitters to accomplish that (and moreso) was Interlude Black Iris and Gold Rose Oudh. As an enthusiast, I'd love to have a FB but it's going to take some practice before I can commit. Otherwise, absolutely worth sampling. The complexion is high quality and sure to garner curiosities of those around you. Not a safe blind buy!

Literally received thisfragrance today and ever since i smelt this in Myer years ago I've been thinking about it non-stop! One spritz is all you need as the projection is powerful as well as the sillage - my sister can smell this from another room! This fragrance makes my body react - my mouth waters haha. Definitely a nostalgic smell, sends me way back to my childhood. For me, all i get is incense and rose. But the more i smell it the more it reminds me of a smokey woodfire - the same woodfire smell i remember in my Nans hometown in country NSW when it would be under 5 degrees and freezing and everyone in the street would have their fireplaces going. Definitely worth the $$$ (305 AUD) and im keeping this in a cool dark place. Perfect for this cold Melbourne weather. This is a special occassion fragrance, i wouldnt go to the grocery store with this on - its not worth it and the basic locals dont deserve to smell this!! :P

This is too beautiful for words, but I'll try anyway.. I have, or had some of the more popular Rose Ouds, like Oud Silk Mood, Rose d' Arabie, Oud Ispahan, Oud Palao, More Than Words, and KIllian Rose Oud ,but this to me is just right! Perfect amount of Rose and Oud, a little sweet, unisex? Maybe, but leans more Masculine to me. I have a partial of the EDT,and just ordered and received the 100ml EDP. They both smell the same to me. This is very lovely, and wearable. Strong, but not overpowering, good longevity and projection! Please don't ever reformulate! ****edit**** Apparently i jumped the gun by saying the EDP smells the same as EDT! after more testing, the EDP has mostly a saffron, or leather pretty much dominating the scent! I still like it, but i can barely sense the rose in here. It reminds me of ADP Colonia Oud... I prefer the EDT! Just the right amount of masculine rose for me!

Indonesian Oud is a warm, floral and woody fragrance. Its aroma is woody and dry, clearly masculine. At the beginning of its application, a slightly sour aroma is perceived, something characteristic of fragrances that contain a little oud, and with the passage of minutes the notes of rose and amber appear and thus it is maintained until it dries down. It is an elegant and good quality fragrance. It is not a versatile fragrance, because it is not a fragrance for daily use, nor for warm days, as it can be a bit heavy, even so I liked it a lot, although it is a bit expensive. His style goes with that of Acqua di Parma Colonia Intensa Oud Eau de Cologne. With me it lasts more than 8 hours. and in regular projection. The version I tried was the 100ml version, which is Eau de Parfum.

I have been using this fragrance every day for three months and have discovered IMO that it is definitely unisex and the most prominent note is a beautiful rose with the other notes buried in support beneath it. It is a linear scent which starts and ends with rose and is best applied in fall in winter as it is WAY too overwhelming in warmer weather so use it only when it turns cooler. I apply five sprays in the morning and then freshen up with an atomizer spray around noon. It projects well for the first thirty minutes and then settles nicely to an arm's length scent. Spray yourself with this lovely fragrance and you too can end up "smelling like a rose" every day: ).

The oud of the year for me If you lived in a culture where oud is more important than fragrances “middle east” you will appreciate this one alot more the difference between west and east when it comes to oud is that Eastern people can differentiate between good and bad oud and I can easily confirm it’s a master class oud better than most fragrances coming from the west end Iof the world Longevity is supposedly beastly but I get nose blind after a couple of hours which is unfortunate Overall it’s a magical scent made professionally As a side note the oud stays for a couple of hours then the rose gets the stand to stay until the end of the fragrances life

I had the chance to sample it today. Superior quality oud! In the opening it posseses some leathery qualities and also the oily nuances of black olives. The taif rose is more prominent in the middle notes. The dry down is a reminiscence of Rasasis' Dhanal Oud Nashwah: the amber kicks in and the oud gets more animalic. From top to bottom is also the patchouli present which backs up the rose perfectly. Even though this is a skanky indonesian oud I do not find the scent off-putting at all. This is a very exotic and non-linear fragrance. There were moments in my life I wish I had worn this one back then. A scent so deep as the cosmic abyss itself...

Devine, Pure and Natural. One of very few brands added with natural oud material on the market. It doesn't contain a kind of barnyard smell, but presents a nearly pure oud with nuance of rose, which is a classic combo and accordingly not inspiring enough. However, it's still a great oud perfume, and much better than its cousin of TF and JM in Estee Lauder House. It's more like a concentrated version of Dior Ispahan Oud infused with some TF Noir de Noir, and ahead of Diptyque Oud Palao for sure. Projects like a beast, and has excellent longevity for 12+ hrs on skin and few days on clothes. Rating: 9.0/10

This to date is the nicest scent I have layed my nose on. I'm not usually a fan of rose at all but it just blends so incredibly well with the other notes. I am really starting to get into oud fragrances, their just so luxurious and it makes me think of a royal palace littered with gold, expensive woods and grand staircases. I will definitely have this in my collection at somepoint, just very expensive and I already own Tom Fords oud wood. I Didn't think I could smell anything nicer than Creed Aventus or Creeds royal oud but this stuff is just incredible.

Either EDT(not as of recent; discontinued) or EDP are always part of my current's.... EDP is more smokey in the opening, Rose is there too, but a deep, not as sweet Rose note as compared to EDT. During/throughout the dry-down; Rose becomes more noticeable and sweet.... The dry-down is SPECTACULAR!!..... This is and always will be part of my collection/rotation.... Excellent and quality product from Zegna..... The One Mysterious Night a similar? Not to me; I have it as well. TOMN is Amber and Saffron heavy. ESPECIALLY the Saffron.

Am I the only one that feels it smells somewhat similar to Christian Dior’s Ambre Nuit in the opening? I must be picking up on the rose, amber and bergamot notes. I don’t own Montale Night Aoud so cannot say. Great scent nonetheless with the oud dimension. Edit-30/3/19. The oud becomes more pronounced during the middle and dry down leaving a gorgeous sexy woody musky-like bubble around the wearer that lasts around 7-8hours and intimate skin scent thereafter. HEAVEN :)

Oud. Oud for days and then some. This really is a masterpiece. That word is overused a lot, but this is the one fragrance that really does make a real oud fragrance available to the mass market. It smells like a fragrance fit for royalty, with monster performance (12+ hours) and a sillage to match. The dry down is heavenly, and always makes me think I'm walking along a hot Dubai beach, smelling like a Sheik on his day off. Mainstay in my collection.

I am very much in love with this cologne. I am on my 3rd bottle now. This is my all time favourite cologne with Dior Sauvage. It's very Divine and Heavenly. It takes away all my stress. It works like an Aromatherapy for me. Thank you ZEGNA for creating such a fragrance. I even love their Peruvian Ambrette, but I did not like their Haitian Vetiver. Today I am waiting for their new Incense Gold to arrive in my mail. I am very excited to try that.

I reviewed this on my Youtube "Rotten Rebel" and I really enjoy it. It smells royal, warm, cozy and nice with a hint of sexiness. The oud is not too strong, funky or animalic even though it dominates the scent. If you are looking for a fairly unique, well-made, luxurious and nice oud with great performance that most people are going to enjoy on you, then you can't go wrong with this one!

I was walking away of the gym's changing rooms when I suddenly smelled something that just made me turn my head, I mean really hard. Next to me was a guy putting on his perfume, and I had to ask him which one he was wearing: Indonesian oud. It projects the words luxurious and sophisticated. With just one spray you fill an entire room. Became one of my favorites instantly.

@shkim totally agreed, and according to the Zegna store in Chicago: yes, the whole Essenze line will unfortunately be discontinued. (Haitian Vetiver and Javanese Patchouli are already discontinued, the other 5 will follow in 2019) Edit: not discontinued, just the former 8 regular EDTs and 5 gold/spices EDTs have been replaced by 5 EDPs (4 regular, and 1 spice).

This is a super strong scent. Almost identical to Montale Aoud Night. I currently have each on the back of my hands and I can't tell the difference. I would say the opnening on Montale Aoud Night is a little more pleasant and not as harsh with the dry down possible being better on Indonesian Oud by Ermenegildo Zegna. I would say 99% identical.

Quite a lovely oud. Oud is in the fore, the rest I could barely smell. But the balance of them all made the perfume lovely and not offensive. Lasted over 12 hrs on skin, and that’s a very strong point. Edit. Three days on clothing already. Alas today’s the laundry day so won’t know if it will last even longer.

Love it. Simply the best quality oud ,patch and rose I've smelled yet with not much to get in the way. Bold , primordial, deep and a pleasure to wear. Kind of perfect. Update:Still love it. Some days I feel like ADP Oud, some days only this will do. I also have Zegna Patchouli and think this one is better.

Beautifull scent, perfect classic combination of oud and rose. Love it. The oud very wearable not to skanky and the sweetness and the freshness from the rose is just to perfect. Very high quality. Performance is beast. Just need 2 or 3 spray it's will gives you a huge projection. Well done Zegna.

I am a rather recent admirer of oud scents, but this is so far the best of them all. It has body, it has audacity, it has strength. There is a blend of oud, rose and spices that goes beyond anything experienced so far. The oud is reliable, the rose is dark, the spices are exciting!

I tried out this at the airport in Milan and my god this was so good. I could see some resemblance between this and Oud Ispahan but this is much better and sophisticated. Definitely on my wish-list and hopefully I will get it soon. Scent: 9.5/10 Projection: 9/10 Longevity: 9/10

Nice thick rose supported by a wet oud, which, although very civilized, has a bit of that barnyard feeling and not the rubbery/medicinal dry kind. It does bring an earthy character with the patchouli and everything is very well blended. It smells classy. 9/10

Goooood oud. Just the right oud. It doesn't get skanky. Hint of rose soap and earth. Truly woodsy at heart. Masculine. Winner of the wearable oud contest that's been going on for... How many years? Super sillage that doesn't pillage.

OMG this is Heaven! I fell in love with it immediately. Such an elegant classy oud perfume. Not at all cloying nor overly strong, performance is great also. kept smelling my wrist and smiling all the time :)

Harsh opening but as it settles down very spicy and great longevity. Very nice fragrance, My top Oud based fragrance along with TF Oud Wood and Acqua di Parma Colonia Oud , my wife loves it.!

This is oud done right! It's smoky and woody, but not overpowering. The rose adds a touch of sweetness that balances it out perfectly. I get compliments every time I wear this.

This smells of LUXURY. Simple and straight to the point; rose, oud, patchouli. It is very very intoxicating and if you smell it in the air you will know that’s what it is.

Indonesian Oud is amazing! It uplifted my spirit all day during the winter. Thanks Zegna for your creativity! I will absolutely keep buying all the Zegna Essence forever.

This is well blended & even richer than Montale aoud night. But montale has monstrous longevity. So I use both at the same time & it is projecting like a beast...

Wore this today for the first time in at least 3 months. This really is an underrated beauty. Ridiculously good. Rain and humidity seem to amplify its beauty.

Smells wonderful, very sophisticated and mature. Very powerful, so go easy on the sprayer. Today I sprayed about 1/2 of a full spray and it is perfect.

Oozes class, hands down one of the most balanced and well done masculine oud/rose combos. Smells like $$$$$$. Something Aladdin should have wished for.

Reminds me of a wonderful incense i used to enjoy from an East Indian market. Great performance,well blended oud rose.

As a huge fan of Zegna's more affordable designer fragrances I couldn't wait to try these having known of their existence for quite some time but not being able to track them down... until now. I thought I'd only sample 3 to begin with and the Oud seemed liked a logical place to start. The quality hits you instantly but it's not quite what I was expecting. I was maybe thinking it would be another in a long line of linear Oud/Rose combo's or it would be a princely shower of oud/saffron and resin but it's neither. I mean that in a good way, Indonesian Oud is a uniquely sharp take on Oud and the wood aroma itself has a different quality to lots of Oud fragrances you will smell and that's refreshing to me. It's not wholly unfamiliar just has a signature quality which makes it worth the mention of where it originates. I'm no expert but those Indonesians have got some good Oud! The opening is bergamot then the sharpness continues as the spicy wood develops, strong and medicinal. There's a slight hint of patchouli and even less rose in here which is great and adds to the scents individual character. I like it and it works to my taste but nothing blind blowing here, the quality and longevity etc is as good as any niche Oud and justifies the high price. The bottles are really great too and have the same style magnetic stoppers found on the Dior La collection Privee bottles. Solid first outing for me with Pricey Zegna's.

A Note on Indonesian Oud, Zegna. Released in 2012, this exquisite Oriental Woody brilliantly combines slightly animalic, oud wood (obviously), the opulence of rose 😍 and citruses - calabrian bergamot listed as a key note, the harvest of which, interestingly, as one reviewer notes, is owned by Zegna themselves (if that is of any importance in niche perfumery). The composition brings together the most amazing if not the most creative combination of brilliantly blended Rose and Oud with Amber and Patchouli as supporting cast, with a secret accord of red wine lurking here and there every so often adding a note of sweet fruity-florality. The animalistic overtones are kept on leash by the sensuality of the floral and the freshness of the citruses heaped gently on top, with the patchouli coming to prominence especially in the dry down adding a moist, earthy feel to it. However, there is not a tinge of skankiness in the whole composition. A strictly formal-setting-only scent, suited to lavish occasions like weddings and stuff. I'm relatively new to Ouds, but this to me is the thing. Deep and dark, this is strictly for the colder months. One of the more accessible ouds IMO in a sea of oud-heavy scents. The perfumer is Jacques Cavallier who dabbles mostly in designers but has an amazing few niche compositions to boast of: Tom Ford Noir de Noir, Replica Beach Walk, Zegna Florentine Iris to name a few.

Sweet Rose Oud. I am not an elitist that screams "REFORMULATION!" every time a fragrance smells different than I remember but Indonesian Oud does smell significantly different compared to few years ago. Was it reformulated?! The current smell is a sweet, syrupy rose that is orientalized with a dash of an Arabic woody accord (oud). This is rose, rose, rose, then oud. However, a sweet syrupy ambery facet takes away from its beauty for me. There is very mild warm spiciness, barely noticeable. Sweet, Arabic rose. This is weird to me because the first time I smelled Zegna's Indonesian Oud years ago it was a warm, spicy, rose/oud scent. None of that syrupy sweetness. Hence, I strongly suspect re-formulation. However, nothing is for sure. I could be wrong. Even though I don't like its sweetness, Indonesian Oud might hit the right spot for some. Montale's Aoud Night is, supposedly, a proper clone of possibly the original Indonesian Oud which I loved. I'll update this review once I try that. A feminine-leaning oriental smell, better suited for cool weather. "Like"
