Molecule 05

I tried this out on paper today. I'm really curious what this will do on skin, because the development on paper is fascinating. I was really curious what pure Cashmeran would smell like. I have a couple of fragrances that reportedly have the note (if I can rely on the note breakdowns that I've read on this site), but as this fascination with fragrance is relatively new to me, I can't seem to pick out as many notes as some more experienced perfume lovers can. I have learned to recognize a number of notes, but Cashmeran, I really had no idea. So when I first sprayed it and smelled the opening, I did recognize the scent. There was a strong sense of knowing the smell. I might have smelled some aspect of it in Encre Noire or something like that, I'm not sure. It started off like wet, dark, aromatic wood. But not aromatic in a spicy or herbal way. More like wood from a shipwreck that's been on the bottom of the ocean for centuries, but without being repulsive. There was some kind of faint coziness to it, something faintly sweet. A few minutes later it suddenly turns. The sweetness and the coziness fade and out comes a smell like wet, dark earth. It's like the wood suddenly skips forward to the point where it's been turned into soil, skipping the phase where it rots away. This phase intensifies to a point where it just smells dank and borders on repulsive. It doesn't quite -get- to repulsive, it just goes to a point where it's not really a nuisance, but more a mundane kind of smell that doesn't seems like it has anything to do with perfumery, and you start to wonder why you would want to smell like you spent a whole day on your knees harvesting potatoes from the mud. At this point I put the paper in my pocket, thinking it started out good, but then quickly changed into something not quite as attractive. So, some amount of time later (not that long, somewhere between 15 and 30 minutes) I'm walking around town, and thoughtlessly pull the paper from my pocket to see if anything's changed. And what do you know! Gone is the wet soil, and back is the woody smell, only this time it's really aromatic and cosy, like a warm, slightly sweet fog that surrounds you with a ghostly, dim, golden glow as you walk around in the early morning sun. Absolutely fascinating behaviour for a fragrance that features one single aroma chemical. Cashmeran threw me a total curve ball and I'm left wondering whether I am totally in love with this, or if I will forever hate having to go through that swamp-like phase. I am really going to have to test this on skin. (I also tested Escentric 05, also on paper, and that seemed to go from a pleasant but not so interesting citrus opening (I seem to pick up bergamot?) to a drydown where the smell of Cashmeran eventually dominates almost everything, but it's the nice phase of the drydown, so no wet earth. It smells slightly different from the pure Cashmeran drydown, a tad more floral maybe, but not much. So Escentric 05 seemed nice but not very special at first, but then became really good in the drydown. Right now I'm thinking Escentric 05 seems like the better option for me, because you won't have the swamp phase, but the same nice drydown/base of mostly Cashmeran.) But again: I should test both of them on skin. I can tell I'm already way too fascinated by these two, haha!

After testing this out on paper and getting a somewhat muddy/wet earth-like smell at some point, I tested this on skin, and this time I didn't have that experience. It skipped that phase altogether, so apparently you really shouldn't be testing it on paper. Cashmeran smells nice. Woody, a bit like pine, and it's quite sweet too. Like jayjay88, I also had the experience that the smell was gone from my skin rather quickly, which was quite disappointing. I then reapplied and did a few sprays on my hair, and let me tell you, that lasted for hours and hours. Every time I moved, I could smell it from my hair. I didn't spray anything on my clothes, but I would expect that would work too as it works great on hair. At some point, about 11 to 12 hours after I sprayed it on in the morning, I went cycling, and as I was in a bit of a hurry, I was working up a bit of a sweat. And sure enough, all of a sudden my skin seemed to be pumping out cashmeran. So it seems like it was there the whole time, but it only started to perform when warming up properly. All of this gives me the impression, that as a standalone, Molecule 05 might only perform well in high heat. I can't wait to try it out when it's actually really hot outside. If you're in doubt whether to buy Escentric 05 or Molecule 05, I'd say go with Escentric 05. It's a gorgeous fragrance, and it beautifully highlights the cashmeran, which is easy to discern in Escentric 05. Escentric 05 seems to perform better, and also gave me the impression that it would be performing well in high heat. It seems like both Molecule 05 and Escentric 05 are really meant to be summer fragrances. I'm guessing Molecule 05 works best for layering. I haven't tried that out yet, but I can't wait to see what the results are! It seems to me like you could layer this with a lot of fragrances. By itself though, I really like the smell of Cashmeran. It's cosy and comforting. Even though it's woody, it doesn't seem at all like you should be wearing it in colder temperatures. This one should be worn in high heat.

Am I in heaven??? My dear Lord, I have finally discovered THAT scent!! Let me give you some background. I'm a 29 year old female from the Baltic states in Europe. Our seaside boasts a very unique character - it's exclusively surrounded by pine trees. And let me tell you, this is it! Molecule 05 is the exact replica of that whole feeling I get. It's exactly THAT summer scent I've been longing for my whole life. Every time I would walk to the sea, I would have to cross miles of that pine forest. And when it gets really hot, the whole atmosphere is filled with sweetest summery resins. I would lie on the forest floor and drink it all up, because it's once a year experience. I couldn't count how many times I've told my family that I would love to have that scent bottled up. I guess dreams really come true. It's sweet, super sweet and feminine on me. I feel like a forest goddess, that elusive spirit that finally got caught. I'm in love! Would this be my signature scent? Maybe, only time will tell. Would I wear this daily? Maybe not. Maybe I'll just always cherish this little tester I have.

i've never smelled cashmeran by itself before, so i'm surprised at how non-"cashmere" it smells. ya learn something new every day! it's soft, yes, and warm, yes, but not in a flat, clean, or straightforward way like a laundry or fabric scent. not at all. there's a complex, unexpected spiciness here that's making me lose my mind. i can understand some of the "compost" comments - there's definitely a sweetish woodsy note that usually only occurs outside during autumn, once the huge piles of dead wet leaves start decomposing. but there's also the tiniest hint of sharpness that comes at the end of every whiff. i cannot describe it adequately - but it's the exact note i'm always hoping to find in a scent. organic and addictive. i cannot stop smelling it on my skin. i want to bathe in this. it may be the sexiest thing i've ever smelled. unfortunately i'm obsessed.

I got a bottle of this fragrance as a Tester discount and I must say I'm happy with this. At first I had a hard time figuring out what it smelled like, to me it felt like how would Dracula would smell after waking up from his sarcofagus, which in my opinion it's pretty neat, the smell of cashmere transports you to another sort of epoch, it is cozy, it is somewhat warm but wearable in a hot day, transparent, woody, bit humid, and fabriclike like a big scarf. I have also layered so far with +Dior Homme Eau, which is awesome, + M01 + Iris it's really cool, but I liked most of all was mixing it with my Sauvage EDT, together they become a much deeper fragrance, nichelike... pretty cool after all, I still have more parfums to layer it with, so far I guess I'm gonna have fun with what it should be called Liquid Cashmere.

I came across this at an airport in the duty free zone. Immediately drawn to the scent. Even though it's a single molecule, I find the perfume quite complex. To me it bonds together the breezy and cozy feel of a summer fresh laundry (in a good way, I know comparing a fragrance to a laundry can be perceived as a blasphemy), and a musky overtone that gives woody and dry leaves vibes. It's a unique scent for sure. It varies a lot from skin to skin, and I've smelled it being quite different on some of my friends. It's quite weak as a projection and also doesn't last more than 3-4 hours tops. If you overspray and focus on fabrics rather than skin, you might get extra mileage out of it. It's also quite pricey for what it is, but again, it's quite unique, despite being just cashmeran. One of my favorites.

I'm honestly not sure why this gets so much hate... fragrance is subjective after all, I suppose. But to me, this is sooo cozy and enveloping. It's kinda like what I imagine static electricity to smell like. It's a little chemically, woody, metallic, yet somehow warm. Very pleasant and fuzzy. I will admit I don't think I'll purchase a full size, maybe a decant one day because that much money for a one note fragrance is a little excessive, plus I think cashmeran works a lot better layered with other things. It's a win to my nose, though.

I don't understand how a substance that is widely used as a fixative can be so incredibly short-lived. Smells like wet soil, dead wood, though oddly attractive to my nose. Layers well with woods, adds something peppery. Definitely smells like white pepper somehow. I can wear this all by itself, but... It doesn't last. I would only buy a big bottle of this if it were heavily, heavily discounted. Like at least 70% off RRP.

this smells like something. it smells like a dark empty room. or the way Lowe's hardware smells but a little sexier. its like the inside of someone you really like's (clean) mouth. no toothpaste or anything, just like that somethingness that bodies sometimes have. i do agree with previous reviewers that this does have a mold-type essence, but just in that its very humid smelling. sexy but disorienting. tbqh im obsessed.

Escentric 5 is a masterpiece, Molecule 5 however, smells "forced". Longevity is bad and it doesn't have the wispy effect that other Escentric perfumes can have. Smells like a musty take on geosmin/petrichor (which I usually love) I prefer Escentric 5. I think Escentric 5 will be the next molecule 01 in terms of hype and love from the community.

I can see why this isn’t for everyone. This reminds me of old books on an old wooden book shelf. Dusty, old, vintage and used. The books have been fingered for millennia. The wooden book case was once in the lavish library of a Georgian town house where gentlemen used to smoke cigars and play chess. I absolutely love it.

This is my favorite Molecule. This Cashmeran is ethereal, it keeps fading and re-appearing, but doesn't leave for a long time. And there is a faint petrichor note and something almost floral... Gorgeous. If it smells bad to you - then it does not work with your skin, plain and simple; try other scents instead.

on me this smells very powdery and fresh. it reminds me of flowers for some reason, not a specific flower, but the idea of flowers. maybe it's the soil smell. it doesn't project at all though, I think it would pair nice with something floral or woodsy. quite overpriced for what it is but it cheers me up

This is not a smell for other people will not get recognized and you wil not get compliments.Molecule 05 I put on to comfort myself. My fav out of all the molecules (01-04 give me a headache and quite nauseating to me) Dump soil, pine,resin,mold - bliss.

Imagine waking up on a camping trip and you emerge from your tent. You get that first dose of morning dew with a mossy earthy smell of the forest. That’s what this reminds me of. Somehow it works! Smells nice! Bravo Geza

I just love it! Have had 01 and 02, but this really blew me away! To me it is so clean and comforting, like being wrapped in the softest and cleanest towel. Like a clean flower :)

Chopped up sinuous pine logs washed with summer rain, left in the forest air, wet near wild mushrooms. Very projecting so less is more.

Musty, sandy earth. Love it. Would combine great with a floral scent I think.

-Smells like wet soil, but in a very nice way, also has quite a lot of sweetness and powdery-ness to it and is just a touch herbal. -I can see why this would be a comfy/cozy and familiar smell, it evokes the way the earth smells after rain or the smell you get when you water your plants and the soil in the pot becomes wet. I get the decaying leaves too. This, plus warmth and sweetness. -I agree with the people saying it reminds them of old books/old furniture, this type of vibe. It is indeed evoking this warmth and coziness. -I believe it can be worn perfectly fine on its own, as well as layered maybe with some florals. -Dries down into a sweet & clean skin scent, while keeping a bit of the character (earthiness, rootiness) of the beginning. -I think it could be worn all year round, but especially in the autumn/winter. -Cashmeran is indeed an intriguing molecule. I would suggest buy a sample or test it before getting a full bottle, as it can not appeal to everyone. I personally love it, it is very comforting.

When I first smelled this-- I mean the first 8 seconds, I hated it. I smelled it as weird herbs. But after about fifteen minutes I began to recognize this mildly powdered sweetness like a candied lilac or iris with the smell of wet saltless driftwood. I think I like this on the dry down, and I can imagine it working as a layering tool with a couple of frags like Gucci Bamboo and Heretic Parfum Dirty Violet. I would consider investing in a bottle after this tester, but probably only the 1oz if it is around on Fragrancenet then I'll see how I can get along with this and explore its versatility. What I am also liking about this is that t seems like something I could wear to be understated, so that I don't disturb others, and t doesn't feel like something I want to overspray.

In the first minute of this being on your skin it has an underlying sweet marzipan-y scent. It then turns into what I can only describe as earthworm. Obviously that’s not for some people but it’s exactly what I was looking for with this! I don’t think it’s unwearable at all, it DOES smell like dirt but in a damp, aquatic, mossy way that I love. If you are too afraid to wear this on its own I think it could be great layered under some white floral/green scents to smell like a graveyard or a garden after the rain. I got the 30ml on sale in TK Maxx for £20 as a blind buy and for me it was very worth it as I had this on my wishlist. I would say it’s probably best not to blind buy this though, as I think you have to be a specific type of person to enjoy this.

Molecule 5 is cashmeran, which smells to me like a smooth, musky, wooden note. It has a rounded and silky nose feel. In my experience, more reliably detected by more people than most woody fixatives and you're less likely to go nose-blind with cashmeran. Questionable as an individual scent, unless you want to smell like a simplistic, partial version of the dry-downs of scents like Boss Bottled EdP. Well worth sampling to learn the smell of cashmeran, but i don't think it's anywhere near as wearable as a single molecule compared with Ambroxan / Cetalox.

A lot of you who smell this will most likely have the same reaction I did: “this smells like something I own.” I think I finally understand Cashmeran and what it does for fragrance compositions. It opens with a slightly astringent, resinous character. After the initial blast you get a dry, woody scent with background resin which remains for the life of the fragrance. It doesn’t last as long as its predecessors, I get 5 hours. I may be going nose blind though. I’ll have to check back in after more wearings.

If you like strange and earthy fragrances, this could be a great layering scent. It’s a beautiful cashmeran mixed with a wet soil smell. A hike through a forest on a rainy day. This does not feel like it was meant to be worn alone. It’s very intimate and the longevity is quite weak in my experience. I can do a dozen sprays and can hardly detect it even 2 hours later. I do love how it can add a bit of soft earthiness to my other fragrances, but I’d only ever repurchase M05 if I found it heavily discounted.

its very metallic like blood and nail polish remover but something about it is so magnetic and addicting.. later it dries down into something soft and sweet like cotton. makes me feel like a sexy cyborg woman with huge steel boobs wearing a bikini and sipping iced motor oil in the spring time need to test a few more times but theres a reason i bought this at the hamburg duty free to my mothers chagrin who said it was the worst thing shes ever smelled

Yeah, I smell the alcohol and it’s peppery... but it has a wood smell that you catch in Those certain scents. It’s not a cedar, cypress, or sandalwood... it’s darker, but it isn’t quite vetiver either. You do smell it somewhat in Encre Noir, but that’s because it’s one of the ingredients... the new DG The One Intense has a lot of cashmeran, but this has a more masculine smell. It’s another interesting molecule that I’ll be using a lot in the future.

Fresh, slightly synthetic but extremely pleasant. I can't place what this smells like, perhaps that is because I have never smelled a purely cashmere fragrance before. A very light and slightly sweet scent with a cool finish. It reminds me of taking your clothing out of the dryer, but the clothes have been idling for about an hour so most of the heart/coziness is gone but still extremely clean and soft.

Places me in my childhood while I’m playing in my parent’s garden. I adore this scent as I get notes of wet dirt, with a fresh metallic note. Essentially if you place water and dirt in a metal drink bottle you could recreate this scent. Lasts maybe 2hrs on my skin but I find layering with a Smokey fragrance allows the scent to transform. Think of a house fire that has been put out a couple hours ago.

It's soft and reminds me of moss, algae, a damp forest floor, a dank basement. Whereas Molecule 04 (Javanol) has an overripe fruit funk to it, Molecule 05 (Cashmeran) has a decaying wood funk to it. I don't think I'd want to wear this scent on its own or layer it with my other fragrances, but it's an interesting experience nonetheless (especially for a $4 sample on Aedes' website). :)

This smells like rain. Both the air itself and the smell of the dust and asphalt in the air after it rains. All the rain fragrances out there smell like generic blue candle or men's aftershave, some random pine and aromatic notes that have nothing to do with rain. This is the real smell of rain without all the bullshit

Not sure if I'd wear this out too much, but it is the most pleasant singular aromachemical of the Molecule line. Slightly woodsy/piney, with some warmth. The worst was vetiveryl acetate, which for me smelled of a weird mixture of fresh house paint, traditional Chinese cough medicine, and weed.

very lovely, cozy, soft. has helped me identify cashmeran in other fragrances. Edit, 5 months later: it has totally lost its charm to me. Thin, no longevity, not sure where i was getting cozy from - now it strikes me as cold and... robotic? Maybe i'll come back around to it.

Really pleasant surprise. “White musk” is usually an overpowering and off putting note for me in most fragrances so I thought cashmeran would be the same, but I love the damp earthy, beetroot, wet stone, petrichor facet of Molecule 05.

Amazing sweet woody type of smell, hard to describe. I can see why people think it smell like "soil"m because it can be harsh. But for me it has an amazing sillage. Aquired taste for sure, but great. The best molecule after 01

This smells damp and earthy. Freshly tilled soil outside of a laundry room not currently being used. It's not clean but not quite dirty either.

Molecule 1-4 are forgettable Molecule 05 is the only one with character - skin scent basically with a warm mus, slightly sensuous smell

This is so nice. The cashmere is popping on my skin with this one but I still get the hint of the mosquito oil.

Meh, was told it smells like bug spray, it’s sharp but mellows. Layer it. I like molecule for this reason.

I have been curious to try Molecule 05, as the aromachemical in question is cashmeran, an ingredient I have seen listed among the base notes of many modern perfumes. As is the case with the other Molecules, it is expensive for what it is, and leaves me cynical about the selling point of brands like this. The Molecules simply consist of a single aromachemical in a particular concentration, bottled and sold as an artistic exercise in abstract minimalism. By their nature, Molecules 03, 04 and 05 are less abstract than the Iso-E-Super and ambroxan of Molecule 01 and 02. None are unpleasant in my opinion, but I wouldn't buy a full bottle of this type of thing, and M05 works less well than its predecessors. M05, or cashmeran, is a cosy, musky scent, slightly metallic and with papery nuances. As a chemical, it was designed to be the olfactory equivalent to the luxurious, warm feel of cashmere wool. Despite it being a natural fibre, my cashmere jumpers don't smell like this, but the fuzzy softness is conveyed. It definitely reads as beige. It is reminiscent of an old building, but in the best way - like visiting an old library. The woody, musky nuances give a strangely nostalgic feel despite the synthetic nature of this scent. It is clean yet cosy, blurred and hazy, but also quite synthetic. It remains constant, with no progression after the spray settles. Sillage and longevity are moderate - just as well, as the javanol of Molecule 04 overstayed its welcome. It is a unisex, year-round, daytime scent. While not unpleasant, I don't understand the appeal of a full bottle of M05. It feels incomplete, and works less well as an abstract single-note scent than the Iso-E-Super or ambroxan of M01 and M02 respectively. I can see how M05 works well as a base note in a composition alongside other notes, but selling it as a single-note scent is pushing it at this stage. 2/5.

I bought some IFF Cashmeran through Perfumer's Apprentice in order to make a bottle of Molecule 05 for myself, because it was far cheaper than actually buying an Escentric Molecule's branded bottle of it. First impression; sharp and peppery as hell, I don't get any "cocooning, musky softness with dry, aromatic woodiness, and a sweet and resinous pine note," this is just a spicier and sharper version of black pepper to my nose. This fragrance would be difficult to wear on it's own, so you would HAVE to layer it with something in order for it to be tolerable. You could layer this with Molecule 03 (Vetiveryl Acetate), and I would think you would be 80% to 90% of the way there as far as smelling like Encre Noire by Lalique. All you would need between these two fragrances is something to give it that velvety/smoky feel to it, and you're there. If you're into middle eastern or niche perfumery, you might give this fragrance a look, as Cashmeran seems to figure into a LOT of such fragrances from those styles. It's pretty much the hallmark note of fragrances in those styles I've tried, and I can see why; you're not likely going to find much of anything on the American designer market that smells like this stuff. Unfortunately, I'm not sure just how much use out if this I'll get, as the smell is strikingly similar to Diazinon, which is an organophosphate pesticide that was taken off the consumer market in 2004. My dad used to love spraying that stuff around the house and property when I was a kid.... and we never had issues with ants until it was taken off the market. :-|

I was ecstatic when I found out my local shop had this fragrance since I've heard so many good things about the entire Molecule line, and 05 specifically was on my "to buy" list, however, after testing the fragrance out myself, I was honestly left surprised. As soon as I sprayed it, 05 gave an aura of heavy musk and mold, mixed with a tinge of wet soil. Despite being almost repugnant at first, it still managed to give me a specific melancholic feeling, it reminds me of a childhood walks in the wood, dragging around or playing with wet half rotten branches of wood that fell from a tree after a heavy rainfall. Another comparison I could make is to a wooden windowsill in an old abandoned building somewhere at the edge of a forest. I can't say I hate the smell, there is something enticing about it, and I'm pretty sure I'm going to cave in and buy it in the future, but for now, it's going to be moved to my "maybe later" list. I'm sure there are people looking for a fragrance like this, and to those people, all I can say is that you will love it.

You put your face to the ground and sniff the detritus left at the bottom of a large woodpile that has been cleared away after decades exposed to the elements . Soil, damp timber, rich, fermented; strong. Then suddenly that smell disappears. You are alone in a tall forest, but for the rest of the day you can't smell the woods from the trees. You get fleeting images of something layered and folded - soft, like a scarf, but you can't quite grasp it, you'd like to wear it around your neck but can't seem to be able to lay a finger on it. A puzzling fragrance for me, maybe my nose doesn't do big molecules. Will keep experimenting as it is intruiging. Worth investigating if you can get a sample.

Wet paint, or maybe permanent markers, with fresh-cut wood aspects, too. After a while, I must have gone anosmic, since I could no longer find where I had dabbed it on the back of my hand, but I could still catch it in the air around me off and on. I kind of like the smell of wet paint, but I don't want to wear it as a perfume. The weird thing is -- I've tried Encre Noire, and I couldn't pick up on the "ink" note -- I went back and forth between sniffing a bottle of ink and sniffing Encre Noire, and I still couldn't get it; it was all vetiver. If I could have smelled the cashmeran in it, I would have totally bought that as "ink."

I got this on heavy discount at TKmax. Compared to Molecule 1 It's pretty disappointing. It is a weak mixture of sweet, musky linen / cashmere notes with little development apart from an occasional sourish hint (like sweat?). It reminds me when you get clothes out of the washing machine, damp but mildly scented. Like a lot of Escentric's line, it jumps in and out of being noticeable but not in an elusive way as the scent itself is meh. What prevents it getting a negative review is that you can layer it with other things. Otherwise, I wouldn't use this, it cannot hold its own and what it offers isn't appealing for me.

I find it wild how differently our noses and skins respond to Cashmeran. On me, it smells like an upscale hotel lobby I would walk through on the way to a parking deck. It is not distinctly any one thing and certainly not the resinous, pine, organic associations other experience. The closest I can get is artificial flora with a hint of menthol. It is not unpleasant but does not smell like perfume on me. Apparently it has strong projection because my husband could smell it from across the room but I went almost instantly nosebleed. Overall, an odd experience. I'd definitely test rather than blind buy.

Cashmeran is one of my favourite perfume ingredients, I adore the fuzzy texture it imparts on a blend. I use it many of my own fragrance making experiments. However, I do not understand this brand at all. Cashmeran is readily available and you could recreate this exact perfume for less than $10. VERDICT: While a beautiful molecule, cashmeran shines as supporting note, it doesn't have the top notes to produce something fully satisfying.
