In my opinion, Etat Libre d'Orange (ELDO) is arguably the most creative and original fragrance house in the entry-level niche price range. One of the things I've always appreciated about the brand is its commitment to storytelling. While storytelling through scent certainly isn't unique to ELDO, the house consistently creates fragrances built around fascinating concepts and narratives. What truly sets the brand apart, however, is its ability to transform those stories into fragrances that are not only thought-provoking but genuinely enjoyable to wear, such as Hermann or Ghost In The Shell. As we all know many concept-driven fragrances can feel more artistic than practical, but ELDO has a knack for balancing creativity with wearability, allowing the story and the scent to coexist without sacrificing either. She Was An Anomaly is a perfect example of that philosophy. I acquired my bottle blindly through a trade, knowing very little about the fragrance itself beyond its intriguing reputation. The story behind its creation immediately caught my attention, with perfumer Daniela Andrier incorporating AI into the creative process unapologetically, making it one of the more unique concepts in modern perfumery. While the AI angle is certainly interesting from a marketing and creative standpoint, what ultimately matters is the fragrance itself—and thankfully, it delivers. On my skin, She Was An Anomaly functions as an incredible skin scent. Rather than projecting aggressively, it stays close and intimate, creating the impression of naturally clean, pleasant-smelling skin. My nose primarily detects amber and musk, though they blend together so seamlessly that the fragrance feels more like an aura than a traditional perfume. There's also an almost plastic doll-like quality that I find incredibly appealing. It adds a subtle synthetic edge that gives the fragrance character without making it smell artificial or unpleasant. While I can appreciate the innovation behind using AI as part of the creative process, what keeps me reaching for She Was An Anomaly has nothing to do with the technology behind it. At the end of the day, it's simply a fragrance that smells great on my skin. The soft amber, clean musk, and unique plastic doll-like quality come together to create something comforting, understated, and surprisingly addictive. Its clean and unobtrusive nature makes it an excellent year-round fragrance and an especially safe choice for work or other professional settings. That same subtle character means it probably wouldn't be my first choice for a night out or even a date night, where I typically prefer something with a bit more presence. What started as a blind trade ended up being one of my favorite discoveries from ELDO, and a reminder that sometimes the most memorable fragrances are the ones that whisper rather than shout. - 8/10 - Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter. - Location/Situation: Ontario Mills Mall, Ontario, California, 2PM, June... She was an Anomaly is really beautiful and thankfully not weird, as the aim sometimes for this house, so an anomaly indeed. Fresh, slightly fruity but not too much, in the opening which is probably the green tangerine and woody like G&B Silky Woods. Has that beautiful and similar kind of vanilla also, but not too sweet. That plummy, fruity vanilla woody thing also found in Xerjoff Dama Bianca and Cheirosa 40 but here it's not as fruity but more woody like Silky Woods. I do get sweetness from the sandalwood but in a milky and natural way like in Kilian Sacred Wood (I voted for it and it appeared with other likes in agreement too). So good. There's a slight fruity, palatable smokiness from the woods and it's probably the incense with a Glossier You iris musk. After checking a retail site to check out the 100mL after already buying myself the 50mL in store, I saw the site listed iris and it brings me joy how on point my nose is lol. Would be a super duper love if it weren't for the poor projection, but it does go further on clothes and in warmth. Wore it in humid 80 degree weather and it left a good trail. Worried it may not perform in the cold, but I'm sure it'll get stronger with time which is better anyways for bigger bottles. It's greatly accessible and more of an everyday signature fragrance to use at home or for quick stops. That way I don't use up my more expensive Rania J Musc Moschus that smells similar in its fruity vanilla, iris-violet purpleness, and sandalwood, but is more creamy, heavy, projecting, and obscurely blended into one accord using another kind of purple fruit. She was an Anamoly has a more obvious woody sandalwood note that stands out more and doesn't get lost in the vanilla and iris. That could also be the cedar that's been listed as a note in other places, adding a distinct woodiness. This can actually be a replacement for Musc Moschus if it were ever to be discontinued, although not as refined. Hopefully not!

an absolute masterpiece, especially for fans of "clean skin" and "your skin but better" fragrances. I am so impressed. this fragrance is a perfect example of a fragrance with intention. there was thought and craftsmanship behind this fragrance - these notes are clearly carefully selected and special, they were blended with a concept as a whole, not a trend or a dominant note. that tangerine is such an amazing note, totally ignites the musky base. incense, a total yes in my book, plum is an interesting note ELDO has tinkered with before, and orchid is so sweet! feminine, subtle, soft. this is what I imagine a maine coon would smell like fresh out the groomers. I'm stretching now, don't worry you won't smell like an pet. the con is sad... it is almost too subtle. I'll have to bathe in this. I hope it lasts a normal time. if it performs well, then that is definitely a final push to purchase a full size in my opinion. for me, this sits right in line with Another 13, I Don't Know What, Glossier You, and all those skin scents cult loved.

where to begin... i did not think i would love this perfume because of the notes, but i ate my words the second i sprayed it. i was sent back to a time i couldnt quite recall for a moment, and when it hit me i was in tears. my senses were flooded with how it felt spending nights with the boy in high school i thought i loved -- his sandalwood cologne, the incense constantly burning in his room, the sweetness and the sour of realizing we had something beautiful that would never work. it almost made me hesitant to wear again, but ive never had an experience with a perfume like this, and my sample is now depleted! i see a few comments about it fading quickly and having a weak sillage, but i do not mind because i will spray however much i need to after i was wowed like that. as for the sillage, i prefer my fragrances to be closer to the skin because it feels more intimate, like its there for only someone special to notice. i will be purchasing a full size very soon. eldo has outdone themselves!

I was surprised that I liked this. I don't normally like powdery perfumes. But this is something richer than that. It doesn't smell aged. It smells intoxicating and intriguing. It smells mysterious. It is complex but simple. I really encourage anyone to get a sample of this if they are curious. It is such a unique scent, I couldn't stop sniffing my wrist all day when I wear it. It does dry down to sit close to the skin, but that just makes me it more wearable. You will smell it, those very close to you will get a sniff, but the office won't hate you if you wear it to work. Edit: months later I got a 50ml of it. I feel like it is a really intriguing and delicate fragrance, I love the soft vibe, I love the airiness. The musk is so soft, the whisper of iris, the lingering sandalwood. It reminds me of a incredibly soft fabric, like a impossibly thin layer of silk or angora.

"she was an anomaly" is no anomaly at all, though it is undoubtedly intriguing. at its core, it is a clean scent - musky, woody, powdery; but the musk here is not of the soapy / just bathed variety, it is more reminiscent of a (clean) fur coat worn in early autumn when the days are still warmer. this fragrance is dusty and powdery but not nose-tickling or stuffy like other scents of that nature often tend to be. it is sophisticated yet demure and quiet, classy, intimate, timeless. the fizzy, barely-there florals give it a fluffy, aldehydic quality and the sandalwood, along with the hint of vanilla, grounds it and gives it a more modern flair. this is an extremely easy wear if you dont mind a bit (a lot) of powder. unisex but definitely feminine leaning. lovely in colder weather, as it is warm and enveloping, like a fuzzy sweater.

I'm surprised by the bad ratings... At closer look, it seems all the bad reviews come from guys. I'm guy and I find it fantastic. I would personally never wear it as it rightfully leans feminine, but I find it to be a beatiful, quiet, discreet iris. With touch if sweetness and powder. Very pleasant tamed musk (if there is a musky fragrance that I like that means something!). Indeed, if you expected loud nuclear attention craving stuff, you will be disappointed. This is the exact opposite - innocent, serene, chaste and very sexy! To smell it, you need to get up close and that is part of the deal. If I had a lady lover, this would make a perfect gift.

Beautiful skin musk, different than most 'skin scents' I've smelled (glossier you, clean skin, dedcool milk etc.). It has a fresh, sweet and warm feeling to it. It is beautiful on its own, or layered. Not a strong perfume, but lasts longer if sprayed on clothes. I sprayed it on a sweater I wear all the time, and the scent stayed there for weeks-months after. I have had my bottle for a year and I think the longevity has improved during that time, since initially it was much weaker. Not a blind buy, but if it is for you, it will become on of your go-to everyday / layering scents. I just wish it came in a travel size so I can take it in my bag!

I sprayed this while I was doing laundry, and I was confused because I couldn't smell it.... as it turns out it just smells like clean laundry. As someone who wouldn't usually reach for such a clean smelling scent, I really love this one. Plum and sandalwood bring some depth to what is, otherwise, a very powder heavy scent. I have been obsessed since receiving the sample set and am definitely hoping to get a full bottle of this. As it sits on the skin, I find it becomes a vanilllic powder scent that sits quite close to the skin. This fragrance is for those days you just want to smell like warm laundry out of the dryer plus a little extra.

This perfume is for ethereal doll-like girls. It is very subtle, think an unassuming flower peeking through the snow or in a crack on the sidewalk. I get watermelon slush. An synthetic replica of something organic, in a good way. It could be for feminine robot girls, introverts, shiro lolitas, or those in a relationship with a ghost. It has very little longevity and very little projection, but if you like to give the impression that you aren't wearing perfume and you just smell like faintly of orange soda, this will be good for you. I wear this to my work in a genomics lab and it works well for the setting.

Not notes I’d ever gravitate to but somehow one of my favourite fragrances, and one of the only ones I get cravings for. Smelt for the first time in Tokyo in a store where the testers are sprayed into little beakers. I was smelling beakers pretty much at random and this one really stopped me in my tracks. I’d say it’s a perfect split of sweet and musky. The colours it gives are baby pink and silver. Kinda evokes feminine robot vibes (more so than TGITS for me), like it’s ‘too’ perfect but that uncanniness makes it interesting? Works pretty much all year round and is best paired with a silk scarf.

I don't know about the official notes listed above. I swear they've changed in the last year. No tangerine, incense or plum. It's just a beautiful iris musk. I think this is in the same genre as Glossier You - clean, transparent musks. But they are not similar scents. Glossier You has an abrasive and sharp peppery note, whereas Anomaly is a very smooth musk. I know people find Anomaly boring, but I think she's unique. Polite yet unique, which is hard to come by in fragrance, but that's one of my favorite scent genres. I really have not smelled anything else like it, and I've sampled > 300 scents.

This defines ME, my AURA... Beautiful, like the northern lights. Clean, cold, fresh, crisp. Like a chilled glass of Veuve Clicquot Rosé. Princess LEIA probably smells like this. It's OUT OF THIS WORLD. Total ALIEN emoji. The opening is a bit sweet but doesn't last, I love that about it. It's a COLD perfume, like SNOW. It somehow manages to be warm. Sweet, sensual & so UNREAL. Top notes: green apple. Middle notes: vanilla bean and light incense. Base notes: soft musk, freshly cut wood, warm amber. AMO! One of my BIRTHDAY gifts this year. I love it. BISOUS

It smells just like one of the old dress stores my local dying mall used to have. It sold mostly short shiny dresses to high school girls needing a dress for homecoming, and you could walk all the way through it to skip a corner of the corridor it was in. DEB was the name, I think. It smells like lint-dust and a freshly-cleaned carpet, with a dose of powdery sweetness like an old but classy perfume. I wish it was a bit stronger/lasted longer, because I absolutely adore it and wish I could use less of it at a time!

It’s a gorgeous powdery sweet incense. I thought I had never smelled this fragrance before until the realisation dawned on me, it smells like New Moon’s Fairy Dreams incense sticks before they reformulated the scent. I had almost accepted the reality of never smelling those incense sticks again but this gem changed such a fate. This transports me back to a time when I collected crystals, turned to my tarot cards whenever I needed answers to my woes, and dried herbs and flowers in my bedroom.

For me this fragrance is so warm and powdery, opening really feminine. And then a burning tire rolls through and suddenly I'm in a sneaker factory. I love it. I don't know what is contributing to the rubber factor but I'm addicted to it. After its all settled I get a blend of that vanilla, powdery musk... and still, tons of rubber. A box of New Balance tennis shoes. I don't care what people around me think I need 100ml of this right now. Edit: PAPER. IT ALSO SMELLS LIKE PRINTER PAPER!

Everybody that said this smells like Barbie's cosmetics table is so correct. It's a very soft, powdery, sweet fragrance, that slowly intensified on my skin during the day. I didn't expect to love it as much as I do but it's so clean, sort of soapy, the "your skin but better" type deal with that sort of Barbie pink tinge that so many people have noticed. And it just works so well with my particular skin chemistry and lingered so beautifully over my day. Instant fave.

I love how ELDO'a fragrances can sometimes smell like "someone else." Like it's not perfume you're wearing there's a whole other entity in the room who just smells like this. I ADORE She Was an Anomaly. It's like the cooler older sister of Ari by Ariana Grande (in spirit, not note for note.) The incense note is so subtle and sweet; it's just a calming, chill, everyday, almost innocent fragrance that reads just a touch off which makes it perfect.

Genuinely my all time favorite scent. It's as if a warm and cozy hug from your favorite person was lovingly poured into a leftovers container for the journey home. I was never really a fan of powdery notes but this one changed my mind. I DO love sandalwood, and the sandalwood/musk notes here are embraced so tenderly by the amber and florals it's almost comforting. It's a beautiful scent and I immediately trust anyone who wears this as a daily.

The perfect plastic babydoll head that many other people have mentioned. It's a comforting, musky, powdery floral, but with a synthetic edge which I absolutely adore. There is something very comforting about this fragrance, like a homemade knitted jumper; I could not stop sniffing my wrists and catching whiffs of it following me as I wore it. One of my absolute favourites from this house, and favourite perfumes that I have tried overall!

The incense and musk mixes amazingly with the plum and orchid notes to make a perfectly contrasting fragrance. Somehow it’s sweet and fruity yet musky and Smokey and it’s spectacular. If you’re a fan of Ethel Cain and resonate with her aesthetic, give this scent a try. The sweet complexity of religion before falling into a darker place, ensnared by the sweetness of the past... That’s this scent.

God what a pretty perfume. It opens with incense but dries down into something bright with a tinge of warmth from the amber/incense notes behind it. It's bright and almost sparkles in a sense. I also find this fragrance rather synthetic (like the majority of reviewers) but I'm definitely not mad about it. It doesn't project like crazy and I wish it lasted a liitttle longer but still gorgeous.

This is everything I wanted Glossier You to be and more! It works well for me and my skin chemistry, it smells fresh and cozy, powdery and incense-y, with a hint of flowers and amber on the dry down. It feels like a comfortable sweater you wear when you need to feel cozy and comfortable. Love for an everyday scent!

Definitely can see the Dr. Pepper and chapex notes people have described, but I really like it. I wish it had more projection. The image it brings to mind is an echo of bright, gentle laughter and a genuine smile in a sort of blue halo, as though the person is completely unaware that anyone is noticing them.

A beautiful soft dreamy iris, it’s so addictive. Calming, snow-like and unbelievably chic. This is what the narrator of My Year Of Rest And Relaxation would wear, I can imagine her taking 5 different sleeping pills, dousing herself in She Was An Anomaly and slipping into a 3 day sleep blackout

Wow. This is such a pretty fragrance. Though it sits close to the skin, I keep getting whiffs of it and it gets stronger as it warms up. It’s a great everyday scent that is enjoyable and present but not overpowering. I also have Ghost and the more I smell from ELDO, the more I intrigued I am.

i’m a huge fan of “plastic” fragrances, most of my parfums has ambroxan in it and i can say this on has it as well. dusty, but not powdery, i hate powder. deep wood and little bit of pepper. some orchids in the middle that reminds me of soap but i love it! but lasts for like an hour....

An adorable sparkly skin scent sweet, powdery, a little tart. Gives gourmand vibes but fresh and light not too sweet. Perfect for the office or for lounging, but unique enough to feel special. Grows warmer as you wear it, with good lasting power and intimate projection. Just lovely

If you like Glossier You and JHAG Not a Perfume this is their other sister. Powdery, fresh, skin-scent. Totally something I love and safe to wear in the office as it is inoffensive. For the price though, I feel like with how simple it is it should be cheaper.

Comforting clean skin scent. One of my childhood best friend's laundry and house smelled like this, love love love this perfume. Light plums and orchids, clean laundry musk slightly warmed by a soaped down vanilla. Very subtle, stays close to your skin.

I am a man who has a hard time with basically all sandalwood and musk in fragrances, yet this supposedly 'feminine' and 'soft' perfume on my skin just fits like a warm cashmere sweater and lasts and projects all day. I guess she really was an anomaly.

Musky Iris Sandalwood, fine French perfumery. No strong projection here, but more like a soft cashmere blanket. You can say that it was made by "Prada`s nose". Daniela Andrier is the master when we talk about powdery scents.

At first I thought I'd dislike it, it just smelled like lipstick. After a frw minuted thought it just turned into the most pleasant, girlie smell ever. It literally smells like a girls' sleepover to me. I love it

This is a lighter fragrance. It is very musky/powdery with a light citrus note. I like it, it is very delicate.

What does a ghost smell like? She Was An Anomaly opens with a remarkably pure, beautifully crisp burst of iris, carried by what feels like a musk—something slightly animalic yet super soft and cottony—before quickly retreating into my skin and the folds of my clothes. Without any change in my surroundings, I simply stop smelling it. I'm not qualified to explain why, but I suspect my brain doesn't register anything remotely alarming and promptly files it away, much like it does with my tinnitus. No matter how hard I look for the fragrance, I can't find it. I thought that was the end of it—that I'd have nothing to say about this perfume—until it suddenly came rushing back to my nose the moment I stepped outside. That beautiful musky iris came alive beneath the crushing heat weighing down the French streets during this historic summer of 2026. It genuinely surprised me, especially since many of my favorite perfumes struggle to express themselves in such stifling conditions. Then I forgot about it again, only to catch it clearly once more after returning indoors, before it quickly vanished yet again. What a strange dance. By the end of the day, I can barely detect it anymore. My best guess—though I'm far from certain—is that, because the fragrance already smells so much like clean skin, it gradually merges with the scent of my own. It's even more striking on clothing, which ends up smelling uncannily like skin (a rather odd thing to experience on a cold garment), with a faint caramelized, coffee-like nuance lingering in the background. It's a fascinating phenomenon, especially since I don't seem to be the only one experiencing it. That's why I strongly encourage you to try it, even if it doesn't immediately appeal to you (especially since the detailed note pyramid on Fragrantica isn't the same as the brand's official one, for some reason). Will this ghost trust you enough to reveal itself consistently, or will it hide from you the way it does from me? Either way, this is a pleasantly strange experience.

Got my hands on the sample kit with 20 small vials of ELDO's fragrances to try with my girlfriend. This is the seventeenth scent we've sampled from the kit. This one opens with a tart, green citrus and is accompanied by a vanilla and sweet note. There is also incense - which takes the opening from great to excellent as it delicately envelops everything in its smoky goodness - and a powdery aspect as well. This is the first ELDO fragrance I've sampled with "powder" as a main accord that isn't humongous for me - it's nice and subtle, balancing with the citrus elegantly. I think "nice and subtle" is actually a perfect descriptor for this scent, given the sillage is quite close-to-skin. This opening is further developed with what begins as a quiet musk (though it seems like the musk may be stronger to others) that then introduces woodiness and some sort of floral - can't quite put my finger on it, but it's absolutely there. ELDO's website doesn't actually list what it is either, it's just named "white florals accord." Which is a bit of a shame, because this is probably the thing I'll remember most in this scent besides the opener. It's all a gorgeous combination, and it reminds me of walking into a flower shop with freshly cleaned floors. The florals and woods dance so well with the slight tartness and sweetness of the tangerine, vanilla, and plum. I found the powderiness of this scent to also grow in size the longer it sat on my skin. I enjoyed this scent, but I did find it semi-forgettable within the scope of ELDO's offerings. This is by no means a bad scent - it's lovely, dreamy, slightly odd; and the florals in this really are FANTASTIC with a killer opening. It's extremely pleasant and very hard to have an issue with. But the poor projection and longevity are something to consider for this one. I also find it somewhat linear on my skin in regards to development. Overall, subtle and lovely - a winner for those who appreciate a quiet scent, or one that isn't too wild in execution - but not for me!

I'm not the impartial person to review this perfume because I love both the perfumer and the brand and respect the mastery of Givaudan perfumers some of whom are viewed as the old guard, or a new generation of the old guard at least. There's a perception of them churning out minimalist pieces, based around tired and well trodden paths. Playing devils advocate.... that's exactly what She was an Anomaly is. If you're familiar with Andrier's work you'd know what to expect here, iris, gentle musk, powdery, warm and very minimal. To me this smells like a Grosjman accord based, ionone and woody musk base. The interesting twist is that this formula was created with the help of 'Carto' Givaudan's AI machine which makes suggestions to perfumers and allows them to create perfume in an intuitive and interesting new way. I welcome this sort of innovation, some might say it's a gimmick or be against such things, but the geek in me finds it really cool. Apparently Carto recomended overdosing certain materials to make it more iris like, encouragement I'm sure Daniela doesn't need to be told twice, favouring it as she does. Opens with that kind of violet, iris effect, quite dry, powdery and Iso E super like, a kind of soft wood. Then settled it's a much warmer, faux orris, buttery and musky maybe even a little ambrette like? It's not overly warm but it's balanced. I think what makes it is the story passionately conveyed by Etienne and Olivier from ELDO. I still don't get what it's about but... haha!

As an iris fan, I try to get my hands on as many iris scents as I can. Serge Lutens Iris Silver Mist is the gold standard, but is very hard to find, and nothing quite compares. She Was An Anomaly is Etat Libre d'Orange's offering. A subtle musky iris scent, its opening is quite promising, but its performance leaves much to be desired. SIAA opens with a nice powdery iris note, just the kind of thing that would seduce me into buying a full bottle. The underlying muskiness joins it fairly early on, reminding me of Naomi Goodsir Iris Cendré. There is a plastic-y quality, reminiscent of a Barbie doll that becomes more evident as it develops, but it is not unpleasant. I find that this doll-like plastic quality marries nicely with powder. I get no tangerine or plum, but there is another floral note alongside the iris, also powdery, that might be due to the listed orchid. I don't get incense either, but it might simply contribute to the musky base. Soft woodiness is evident as it dries down, complementing the musk. It fades to a warm, musky skin scent. Sillage is intimate and longevity is weak. It is a feminine-leaning, transeasonal day scent. A simple musky-iris scent, SIAA is a pleasant, good-quality example of an iris scent, but is let down by its limited performance. It is nothing groundbreaking, except for its lack of a listed iris note - could this be the Nahéma of irises? Nonetheless, she does not strike me as an anomaly. 2.5/5.
