Marquetry

On me, Marquetry is a beautiful, rich warm, ambery vanilla with balsamic, aromatic, fruity, lavendery touches. I remember Googling the meaning of the name but I don’t think the scent has much to do with woods. It’s not a woody scent! I read a few of the previous comments and the unanimous consensus seems to be that it’s just a fancy name. My personal experience with Marquetry is more about sweet vanilla, coumarin, tonka beans, labdanum, amber that anything woody. I have a lot of fragrances of this type cause it’s my favourite scent profile to wear during fall and winter, but nothing as heavy as this on the peru balsam and galbanum. These two notes give nuance and contrast to the standard sweet, warm vanilla/tonka bean scent! There’s nothing harsh on unbalanced in this, all the notes are well done and creates a smooth, aromatic, rich, deep, balsamic, intoxicating scent, that feels very rounded, complex, calm, enveloping! I am happy to discover perfumes with new notes or accords that open my eyes to new possibilities! This one is doing that with the galbanum note. Performance on Marquetry is great. Strong from the first spray, creates a small scent bubble around me and leaves a beautiful trail! I bought this on sale, for half price, so for the price I have paid, Marquetry is fantastic value. Even getting it for full price, for the quality, the performance of the juice and the elegant design and packaging, I would say it’s not overpriced...It’s a common scent profile with unique twists! Also, my understanding is that Etro is a very underrated, small, more affordable luxury brand. Not many people outside Italy know or have access to try it!

Proof of how a name can completely skew my perception of scent. Could have sworn when I put this on that it was the scent of beeswax, honey and a bit of light wood - and I liked it a lot even though it was indeed on the sweet side. Sort of like a very very classy organic furniture polish. That's because I was free-associating with the word "Marquetry" ... and enjoying the scent a lot. Must have been all the Tonka I suppose. Dithered a lot over it, because I found it hugely appealing and comfort-smelling, though too sweet for comfort. Then I look at it on here and see that it's not a wood fragrance at all, apparently, and is also chock full of overbearing notes I usually can't stand, or need to keep in minimal ratios to enjoy something at all(lavender? peach, for the love of Frags?) Yet Marquetry isn't overbearing at all - it's just a warm and polished comfort scent. Not out of this world original, but very nice indeed. Big sillage but only medium longevity. Often keenly priced, as well. I'm still a bit on the fence maybe.

It's ok, but it's like reviewer trabuquera said, it's absolutely not a wood scent and shouldn't have been named something associated with wood. I would have thought it would have sold better, to a wider audience, if it was called something associated with vanilla. I think I read somewhere that in the 1950's and 1960's nearly every major perfume house made a scent to compete with Shalimar. Lanvin made Scandal, Caron made Bellodgia and/or Tabac Blond, Faberge (the big selling dime store fragrances in the little matching bottles with the fuzzy or wooden screw-tops) made Tigress, etc. Etro fragrances started coming out slightly later, but Marquetry is Etro's Shalimar. It's not an exact replica of Shalimar, but it's so like it. I'm not a fan of Shalimar, but so many women are that I think it would sell better if Etro gave it a more exotic sounding name. Relatively few people know even what marquetry is, and no one looking for a Shalimar like scent would think of looking for it under this name.

A very interesting combination of lavender and amber. It opens quite clean and fresh with the lavender being the clear main character. After about an hour the creamy amber and vanilla take the main stage but there's a boldness lingering in the background which makes it very unisex. Great work, Etro!

I like this, I find it a relaxing and comforting scent. To my nose, the initial hit is lavender, beautiful French lavender. It does smell like a traditional cologne but then, very slowly morphs into a woody, amber-peach. It's not ground-breaking, but there's just something about it.

Reminds me of talcum powder! Or other somewhat natural/herbal scents. It's a creamy scent. It's comforting. To me it has like a vintage 90s vibe. I imagine more mature people wearing this (I am in my 20s); I won't probably wear it, unless I want to smell cozy and baby powder like? (I like it more each time I smell it)

Looking at the notes I thought this would be something I would love (peru balsam, amber) with a touch of herbs that might not be to my liking.. But then the comparisons confused me, will this be a vintagey amber? To me this is by no means the obsession / krizia style vintage. It's a modern resin plus some bitter herbs. I adore peru balsam, and it's really true to that. A smoky tree sap resin with sweet tonka which is gorgeous I did have to get past the strong bitter galbanum in the beginning though.

Surely this must be a new one but Etro has already made a perfume with this name in the 1989/ begin of 90s. The old version of Marquetry featured notes of geranium oriental rose egyptian jasmine lavender camomile castoreum and light vanilla.. so it was written on the vial envelope. It was a bit weird and old style but dry, woody and elegant like a warm oriental cologne for man.

My sample arrived today, thank you! :) I find this a very calming scent so far, just puts me in a better mood. Definitely unisex however the vanilla keeps it feminine enough for me. I love the lavender with peach and amber; so soothing. Reminds me slightly of old-fashioned cologne but with a modern twist. Shame about the price tag though.

Notes: Bergamot, Lavender, Peach, Galbanum, Tonka Bean, Rose, Amber, Vanilla, Labdanum and Musk Starts of very clean with prominent Lavender note, as it develops Amber and Vanilla come into play. In the drydown Tonka Bean is more noticeable to my nose. Overall a good fragrance for the summer.

I can detect very powerful peru balsam, reminding me an ink. and labdanum-tonkabean-vanilla mixing. quite good, well balanced.
