Brut

Having seen this at Walmart for a mere 9 bucks so many times, I finally thought I'd check out this classic cologne/aftershave. My dad wore this for a period when I was a child (until I thought his bottle was getting too low so I filled it with water). Got it home and couldn't wait to try it. Applied some on my arms and... this is good. Better than good. This is amazing! This deserves much more respect as a fragrance than it gets, most likely due to the price and commonality. For one of the first times I can smell almost every note in a fragrance. It's not that they are separate or not well blended, but they are there if you look for them. The anise, lavender, citrus, geranium, vanilla. Even the basil is there. The oakmoss, vetiver, sandalwood, patchouli, and tonka pop their head out as it dries down. What surprises me most is how woody it is. It's a slightly sweet floral wood scent. And I absolutely love the woody aspect. I have some expensive and overpriced fragrances, and I'd put this at the same level as them. This goes into the rotation. I'm rather blown away by it and very impressed. It's a classic, but still relevant. Much in the same way that Green Irish Tweed is. Or Acqua Di Parma Colonia. Or Eau Sauvage. It is a classic male scent that deserves to still be around and get worn. And be respected. Edited to add that I should mention it is the splash on aftershave that I have which means it is very light and doesn't last all that long. I know they have an EDT glass bottle available. May have to try that. I wish they'd do a higher end version that this scent deserves. EDP, but don't change a thing. Just stronger. Like original strength.

A little update on my previous review below. I've been on a bit of a Brut kick lately. Bought the Unilever/Parfum de Caractere spray EDT. Bought the Idelle Labs cologne. All good, but the Idelle Labs products really impress me more. To contrast, the EDT dries down to a floral/woody powder whereas the Idelle Labs aftershave and cologne dry down to a floral/powdery wood. May seem like a small distinction but I prefer the woodier aspect of the Idelle Labs formulations. I can't compare any of them to the original formulations because it has been decades since I smelled it, but the Idelle Labs scent brings me back to that more. They've done a great job and it greatly exceeds the plastic bottle and price. Ranking purely on scent: 1. Idelle Labs Aftershave/Splash On: Doesn't last at all, but the scent is divine. Floral. Woody. Slightly powdery. I can't stop sniffing it. Since it has VERY limited sillage and longevity, wear it for yourself. After a shave or shower. After work. It will make you (and whomever gets close to you) feel good. 2. Idelle Labs Cologne: Stronger and very similar to the aftershave, but loses some of the subtle details. Wear this out. Maybe 4 or 5 hours on my skin and moderate sillage. Lasts longer than the EDT. I'm decanting it to use as a spray on. 3. Unilever/Parfum de Caractere spray EDT: More on the powdery barbershop scent side. A hint of vanilla. Nicer glass bottle. About 2-3 hours longevity on my skin. Still love it, but since I like the woodiness more than the powderiness, the 2 above fractionally edge it out. But it is still a legend and I wear it regularly.

Brut 33 by Faberge: The Classic! No man can go wrong with this one. It simply smells great. It's pleasant to the senses. Yes, it's been pushed into the cheap markets and convenience stores of the world along with other greats like Obsession, Old Spice, Stetson, British Sterling etc... But it doesn't mean it lost it's class and elegance. On the contrary, Brut remains classy and just as stunning today as it did when it first was launched in 1968. The note formulations in this are that of genius. I never tire of this classic Men's fragrance. The way Anise and Basil play with the other more common notes is pure olfactory bliss. It's one of those fragrances that is worthy of the title, 'Timeless'. It brings back so many wonderful memories of my childhood. It is this fragrance that got me started in my fascination of perfumes at the age of eight. It reminds me of early mornings 6am, in the late 1960's and early 70's when my Uncle would get ready for work. He'd come to breakfast, all gentleman like, in his three piece suit and tie, wingtip oxford shoes and horn rimmed eye glasses and the whole house smelled of Brut 33. I said, "You smell good Uncle". He then told me what the fragrance was, and thus began my lifelong journey into Fragrance Mania. Then there was Auntie and her perfumes, need I say more? Brut 33 has extreme longevity, and enormous sillage, and eternal satisfaction. High praise to my very long time friend, Brut 33 by Faberge. Thank you for all the years, memories and inspiration.

For months I've been trying to remember what john varvatos vintage reminded me of. It was this. A smell I've had burnt into my brain I guess since I was a kid. Im currently in Georgia visiting very distant relatives I see once a decade and I walked into this beautiful rustic fisherman house. Old wood. Vintage rugs. Chairs that tell a story. And man who had impeccable taste in audio and books. The staircase creeks with age and splits two ways half way up leading to a floating floor that takes you to 4 beautiful rooms that are timeless in their own way. The living area has a reading nook with what looks like very vintage bowers and wilkins speakers tucked away for when background music is needed. The "TV room has a center set couch. Walla painted in a rich cherry red color surrounded by wooden furniture and on the desk sat a bottle if this. I sniffed it our of curiosity and instantly was brought back to being a child. Floured with memories like I had just opened a history book of the very small fishing town im staying in "a shrimp dock is across the street close enough to hit a boat with a rock." The smell smells timeless. Like every barbershop you would think of in one of those new york gangster movies. It oozes classic man. It works. It smells great. And john varvatos vintage is like it's child. Who took all the knowledge this wonderful scent had to give. 10/10

Epic Journey Into the Bottled Yonder, 004 ------------------------------------------------------- Part 3 Brut is the obvious choice for all ages. I tested out the talc of this, was my dad's, and immediately fell in love. I already had worn Boss for a while and became glued to Axe/Lynx. Brut transformed all possibilities, to keep it short. Without that, I'd probably be that stinky deodorant guy smelling the same everyday in all situations. That's not nice. But nowadays even Brut has a slight stank to it, when it gets sweaty. Everybody knows it. It's the first affordable fresh/clean scent. Not so clean anymore, but you have to understand the period it was invented in. Today it ends up becoming a little muggy feeling after lingering much of the day as it gets warmer, but I'll always wear it when something simple and dumb reach calls. Reminds me of my old days for sure and that's a big reason why I keep a bottle in my stable at all times. Super wearable, fuck-you-it's-cheap fragrance. There's more poetic ways of discussing Brut but I don't have all day here either. The bottle pictured above I don't have. Considering its price for an EDC splash I've cautioned from it for years. I love sprays, hate splashes. After shaves are a different thing. Apparently this "Cologne" and Special Reserve smell the best. Steer clear of the non-Cologne splash, waste of money.

The name sums it up BRUT. The most masculine barbershop fragrance of all time. I remember always smelling this on my dad when l was growing up. As a teenager l remember smelling this and thinking,no way would l be caught smelling like Brut,as l reached for my Curve and or Cool Water and bathed in it. Now as a grown man, I wouldn't be caught smelling like Curve or Cool Water,but Brut YES! I haven't smelled this in years,but l ordered two bottles of the EDT (in the original glass bottles) which will be here soon. However my curiosity got the better of me,l ran out and grabbed a bottle of Brut aftershave and deodorant to go along with my EDT when it arrives. When l got back home l immediately jumped in the shower,once out l gave myself a nice clean shave and splashed on the aftershave. MAN! does his stuff smell great!,I can't believe l went this long without it. It immediately took me back in time,dad was leaving for work and mom was Jazzercising in the living room(for you young kids reading this Jazzercise was a popular 80's exercising routine). I can't explain how fresh and invigorating this fragrance is and that It has become my favorite everyday fragrance. There are not to many fragrances that keep me coming back and continuously sniffing them and Brut has captivated me.

Every time I see "Brut," I can’t help but think of the "Brute" unit from the game Yuri’s Revenge. It’s a game I used to play with my older cousins when we were young, around 16 years old. I loved that game so much that even now, at 38, I still play it sometime. I used to forget the "e" in "Brute" and mix it up with "Brut," thinking they were the same word, I still do sometimes, lol. Anyway, the "Brute" units looked "masculine", probably inspired by Marvel’s Hulk, and coincidentally, Hulk is green too, lol. All of this has been etched into my memory since I was young, a gentle mixup that’s stuck with me. But after a long time, as I grew up, I completely forgot about this scent. That is, until my uncle came back from afar and brought a can of Brut deodorant spray. The moment I smelled it, all those nostalgic memories of my youth came flooding back, afternoons getting haircuts and then heading to the internet cafés of the early 2000s to play games together. Just like that, more than 20 years have passed.

Gentlemen, If you simply just want to smell like a man then look no further. Does it smell dated? No. Does it smell like Dad or Grandpa? No. Does it smell cheap? NO! This after shave is a great product for the price. The scent last 7-8 hours later. It even passed the wife test. Would I buy this again? Absolutely. This is a product that has been around for decades and there is a reason why. I liked it so much I bought the bath soap for it. The Gents Score: 10/10 a Gentlemans classic. This is the one that started my olfactory journey into scents, way back in my young teen years. I made the mistake of mentioning it was my favorite scent and ended up with many bottles of this every Christmas. I've seen every iteration of the bottle. The girls at school dug it more than the British Sterling, which seemed to me as made for old men. And this scent doesn't come close to the Pinaud Clubman one; there is no similarity. Look at the Main Notes section. What other scent gives you that much complexity for so little price? So the next time you see an inexpensive bottle of this, buy one for your nephew, your son, or even yourself and feel those memories again. This scent goes so far back, young people will have no idea what it is.

Elvis wore it. My dad wore it. Now, I wear it with pride and confidence. A "man's-man" scent. The old bottle where the metal badge hung by a chain strapped around it, commanded strength. The scent back then too was strong and had strength. Sadly, the strength is no longer there. The fantastic scent is still there and announces itself for about 45 minutes, then rests delicately on the skin. Delicate is not a word I would have ever thought to use to describe this fragrance. But until they bring back the longevity - here it will stay. Classic. Timeless. Brut-ish.

Review for Brut Eau de Toilette For Men by Brut Parfums Prestige (modern formulation, silver medallion, glass bottle). Brut is an amazing smelling aromatic fougère that manages to distinguish itself enough from other such fragrances. I would describe the scent as akin to a luscious old school shaving foam with a floral heart, masculine, fresh and invigorating. The performance isn't great, but that's to be expected and considering the price, overspraying is an easy remedy. It's very hard to overdo such an easy to wear and fresh fragrance. Lovely. 8/10.

I couldn't remember what brut smelled like so I picked up a bottle for 10 bucks at Walmart just to see what the so-called hype is, and I got to say I love it , I'm already on my second bottle, my brother bought me a bottle of Clubman and I enjoyed it and I saw that brut is similar to Clubman, I think brut is more aromatic, I like them both. But what I've recently done is I've taken Pinuald's Citrus Musk and mix it with Faberge Brut to create my own concoction, I love Brut I just wanted it to have a little bit more lime citrus in it. Give it try.

My Dad's staple on his bureau, along with his Old Spice, Brut was his date night or gig scent (he was a musician). Soapy, spicy, aromatic, with a slug of geranium in its heart and a mossy, musky base, Brut is the reason I love fougères as it was the first one I was exposed to in childhood. Sadly it has over time slipped further and further downmarket, and its formulation has suffered as a result. I have a vintage spray cologne bottle from the 80s and wearing it feels like burnished gold.

I've been using this for a few days now. Initially i thought it smelled a little strong but it has grown on me. Now I'm loving it. One of the best I've smelled. I could wear this any time of the year day or night. Definitely a great classic. I understand that not everyone will like everything and that's understandable, everyone has a different taste and that's what makes them unique. If you're thinking of getting it, go for it, doesn't cost that much anyway.

Ultimate masculine classic. This with Old spice, Burberry London, Polo green and Aramis will complete your shelf for masculine classics. I can name hundreds but they all revolve around these, you can also add Dior Fahrenheit. Mix them, layer them have fun. One of my dad's fav scent, too nostalgic and emotional for me to leave this aside, I love it and still wear it. Scent 9/10 Sillage 7/10 Longevity 6/10 Value 9/10 Overall 8/10

Dimestore fragrance given to me when I was a pre-teen, Brut establishes you're a man to the females and you get that wink from them. The problem was EVERY kid wore it. However, it led me down the path to enjoy fragrances. You've just brought in wood for the fireplace on Christmas Eve and have some pine needles on the shoulders of your coat. The chocolate cocoa fills the air or perhaps some friends are sipping coffee and cream.

I love this aftershave. Smells like the 70s and 80s. Musky, green, and then some clean notes at the end. It lasts all day long. If you love sweet, fruity aftershaves and colognes, like Phantom or other colognes made for 12 year old boys, then this is NOT FOR YOU. You may not like this. Just like another reviewer, my father once wore this a lot. He loves Old Spice, but he also loved Brut's deodorants and aftershaves.

Another of my nostalgia scents. Excellent still in the current formula. It opens up with citrus and herbs, to then go into this powdery, floral lavender, ylang ylang, white musk and amber - vanilla drydown. Just a touch of green, buttery oakmoss in there as well. A bit of coumarin tobacco giving it a bit of edge. Extremely good for the price. Just spray on clothing for a better performance

I love the scent as it reminds me of my childhood. I think I would love it even if I smelled it for the first time now. However, I only wear it when I'm at home by myself as it is so recognizable and has preconceived notions in other people's mind. It's the ultimate barbershop powdery slightly sweet scent. Love it.

This was what my boyfriend/fiance/husband used to wear. When he was away at college, he would spray his letters to me with it, and I would spray my letters to him with Chantilly. (It made the ink run!) Let's just say that to this day, the smell of Brut has, um, a certain affect on me.....

One of the greatest male scents. I have the Splash-on and use it as an aftershave. I started using it 40 years ago and it hasn't changed. I still love it. It's a little woody, a little vanilla and a little green. It's just a great scent. A must have in every man's shave den.

It pains me to say it but, I think I prefer the newer 'Signature Scent' over Brut Classic. Classic just doesnt have that effervescent feel good menthol hit anymore. It still smells good but, fresh out of the shower, I reach more for the Sig. I wish they made an EDC of it.

Very very barbershop, may smell dated to many but it's kind of an acquired taste, I have the aftershave and it smells just like that, a classic aftershave so I've come to love it.

This is for me number 1 fragrance for man ever. It has poor performance, so Azzaro pour homme is the best fragrace for man for every day, becauce it has very good performance.

Smells super manly. I really like it. I bet if young men wore this the girls (or boys) would love it as it's so different from other scents that are popular right now.

I've been using Brut since I was about 14 or 15. It is one of the sexiest and nicest sent out there, yet it is very cheap. But it does not smell cheap at all.

Fresh barbershop scent, more than 50 years in production. A master piece. Always have this in drawer, when it finish i directly buy another one. 9/10

some of the reviewers here have already stated, what Brut actually is: perhaps the most iconic, distinctive, and beautiful DNA for men ever created. One of them is from [email protected] He said: ".......At one time this was THE Biggest scent for men on the planet. There will never be another phenomenon like it. Old Spice came close but this stands in a league of its own..........." Absolutely. but, there is a big problem. the problem started about 40 years ago when Brut went into the supermarkets of Europe (where I lived). before that, it was generally available in the US, and in the PX of the US-Army facilities all around the world. so, Army soldiers outside of the US sometimes wore it, and people who smelled it on them were like "What the heck is that - this smells unbelievable". but then, it became available in supermarkets for low prices in Europe, and suddenly everyone had Brut 33. (33% concentration of the original) and because it is such a distinctive DNA, everyone immediately knows the scent that you are wearing. we all know, how uncool that is. so it became a No-Go wearing it for a long time - at least for me. nowadays though.... many young people don't even know what it smells like. what an opportunity. if you want to impress a young lady with a "new" scent, you should give it a try. One guy said in one of his reviews, that his girlfriend told him, that this smells better than everything else he owns. She likes it even better than Aventus. (which costs about .....a lot more). Update: I don't know the reformulation. I hope they haven't ruined it. I will test it soon. Update 2: they did. it smells more synthetic now. it's still reminiscent of the old Brut 33 that I remember from decades ago, and I still like it after 15 minutes, but overall the vintage version was in a different league. imagine how great Brut used to be. it was a revelation of perfumery for men. the most masculine and distinctive pleasant scent ever that doesn't smell like shaving cream. If you have the chance to get a vintage bottle, get it.

This stuff is quite alright by me, for whatever my opinion is worth (please don't wear things just to appeal to women, that's lame...wear what you enjoy and the right lady will warm up to it, or won't...) as a woman in her 30s. This is actually much sweeter than I anticipated it would be! I do predominantly smell tonka in here, and acrually some florals too. It isn't really the peep green color of the bottle in tone, to me it's a warm light brown or beige. It's oddly soft, and I think a plushy sandalwood contributes to that effect. However, the other thing I noticed immediately was a licorice-y tone, probably owing to the anise, but I actually though it smelled more like a licorice plant itself...or fennel possibly. It isn't overwhelming, but I definitely didn't expect it! I don't have any scent associations or memories with this, nothing was conjured up when I sniffed it in store. So, I won't speak for it being dated or any of that. I actually think it's quite decent (I like old fashioned stuff anyway, I find it fascinating, so it wouldn't matter if it was). It's excellently priced as well, and it earns a thumbs up from me 👍

BOLD! I am surprised this is not in the "Fougere" category, but spicy does fit. I get the Anise, Oakmoss, Lemon, Patchouli, Tonka, and Ylang-Ylang. Lavender I don't really get, maybe due to it all being so synthetic. This has been toned down greatly through the years, but have no doubts the DNA stands and it is recognized still today. Ultimately this is not something to wear if you want to impress, it is a legend of a time long since past. It will be recognized and is usually associated with a person in ones family circle. It holds an olfactory history for many men, but is slowly fading as few are brave enough to wear this in public these days. If you are interested in fragrance, this is worth having for your scent museum. BRUT paved way for future bold scents, and oddly must have worked to some degree being as prominent as it had for so many years? I guess it was fitting that its last hoorah was being slapped on the face of a young man "Home Alone" not knowing any better in the early 90's.

It's funny how divided people are with this one. To me Brut is a very opulent fragrance, conjuring the wealthy, mature spirit of a stately gentleman (with just a dash of teenage angst thrown into the mix if, like me, you first gave it a try at that pivotal age). And, while perhaps a little dated - owing only to the nostalgia factor, in my opinion - it's a definite classic. There is just enough spice to highlight those herbal notes and, although Brut's base comes close to being a little too rich and syrupy-sweet for my personal tastes, on my search for the perfect fresh masculine fragrance, this is a definite contender. Why waste money on a more generic aromatic scent when something like this is so classy and yet also so ridiculously cheap? It's a win-win to me, and a failsafe option to fall back on if nothing else ends up standing out. My advice? Wear this fragrance if you want to feel, however fleetingly, as though you have your sh*t together. Just like a real Lord of the Manor.

This is my maternal grandfather's signature scent, he always smelled like Brut and gave me an aftershave/cologne set as a kid. Back then late 80s/early 90s Brut was still a powerhouse that had monstrous projection and silage, the newest offerings however are faint spectres of what it once was. This was, and kind of still is, a necessary masculine fragrance in your collection. At the very least buy it for the nostalgia and history seeing as it's like $5 at Walmart. The scent of the current incarnations is still remarkably close to the original I remember from 30 years ago but far more faint and short lived. Black licorice and herbal citrus are the main focus with some slight powder and greenery far off in the background. The older version was a lot greener and the lavender was more prominant. Pinuad Clubman is another cheapy drugstore cologne in the same vein. I know there are also clones available with a closer profile to the old school stuff if you can find them.

It's Brut. ... I could stop there. But Brut is simply the archetype for classic American Barbershops. Soft and soapy talc powder, gently spiced lavender, a little non-descript citrus and wood. It's not fleeting, and it's no longer a monstrous, room choking 70's splasher. It opens for about 60 seconds with harsh alcohol and an almost bathroom cleaner lemon citrus before you get the real notes come through. Is it dated? No, not really! No more than Old Spice to be honest, it's just a nice classic scent that has stuck around generation after generation. I picked up about 800ml (4 bottles) for less than 15 bucks. Terrific value. Casual scent for everyday use, clean and fresh, and seeing a real revival with the renewed interest in wet shaving traditions in men's grooming. If you can admit you actually quite like Brut, I'd recommend: - GF Trumper Paisley. - Penhaligon's Sartorial. - Paco Rabanne - Pour Homme - Pinaud Clubman.

The urethral opening of the splash on bottle has shrunk (or have I just gotten bigger?), and there is a distinct chemical twang underlying the whole theme; but this really seems to have stood the test of time better than so many from the same era. On its own, and for $10 AU for 200ml, I'm impressed. Brut® seems to be licensed to several manufacturers globally. Here in Australia, a local company has rights to manufacture and distribute the brand. It's warming, dark green and suggestive of something that can only be a memory of childhood or adolescence by the time one's old enough to appreciate its complex simplicity. Like any good scent,it smells unlike anything else.It unlocks the past and shields you from the future, while delicately transporting you from the now, without robbing you of anything unique, beloved or personal.

Fabergé Brut... ...is a nice allrounder and still popular because it is genuinely good. The lavender and anise with it's herbal and fresh impact intertwined with a soft floral centre and sitting on a mossy and soft woody base is hard to dislike. Brut is like many other barbershop style fragrances relatively close to Pinaud Clubman which can be considered as the grandfather of all those scents (Canoe, Hai Karate, Jade East and many more). Interistingly the licenser is Unilever and responsible for Europe and some other markets. The licensee in North America is Idelle Labs in El Paso and for the Australasian region the licensee is Pharmacare Laboratories in Warriewood Australia. The fragrance is not different however the product portfolio of Brut varies in those regions.

This review is for the aftershave which I think is similar to the cologne. Although it is marketed as super masculine and macho, it is a nice fresh scent. It has a powdery vibe similar to clubman but maybe a little "darker". I don't get a "grandpa" vibe from this like I have seen with other scents. Has decent longevity of an hour or two for an after shave. I do want to say I like the overall feel of this after a shave. It has a bit of "thickness" to it. I'm not sure if that is the word, but you can tell it has some ingredients other than alcohol. I think if you like the clubman after shave, you will probably like this. Worth giving it a sniff at least in the store.

Reading the reviews for regular Brut I suspect people are confused and maybe thinking this Brut splash-on plastic bottle formerly known as Brut 33 is the original Brut.. but no no no. This splash-on version (Brut 33) is Brut in its stripped down attributes, a remaining core of the original Brut.. it's just kind of a refreshing post-shower or invigorating eau de cologne version of Brut.. is it any good ? yes it is.. it is minty, mossy dry concoction just meant to wake you up after some rude day.. I don't think there's some serious top, middle or basenotes here.. just the barebone essence of Brut for 15 to 20 minutes in best cases.. has some utility in your cabinet..

I've always liked BRUT since I was a kid. My Dad and I used it and the deodorant. Besides being a classic barbershop-type scent, there is some nostalgia going on too. Go with this BRUT cologne (more projection and longevity) and NOT the glass-bottled EDT version which is actually weaker than the cologne. FYI, if you're also interested in BRUT deodorant and want the same scent, go with the Original Fragrance cylindrical stick and NOT the flat stick (slightly odd, off scent). It's a good deodorant to wear with BRUT and it will not get in the way of any other of your SOTDs.

When I was a teen Brut was kind of like Three Dog Night 8-track tapes: a guy may not have liked it but as soon as a girl said she did, he scored some. It was affordable, easy to find, and they offered a full line so yeah, I had it, wore it, and actually liked it. Judging from the reviews most of the people here think for themsleves and admit to liking it, despite what stand-up comics and sarcastic writers have to say. Brut was an important part of my life, and it has its place in the fragrance universe today. I'll never dis anyone for wearing Brut.

Love this for splashing on after shower! Layer this with some other fragrances to give them a green manly direction. I’m probably a fan because I had the soap on a rope years ago. I’m still a fan of fresh and green, so this is still great (and a great value) I can’t take this super seriously as a daily wearing bottle b/c the longevity isn’t good. My typical use for Brut: It is sitting right next to the sink, going with some hand or body lotion to make it manlier. I bought the shower gel as well.

Ok, don't shoot me down but I'm personally not a huge fan. It's ok, but not my cup of tea. It was however my grandfather's signature scent. I have a bottle and when I feel like being reminded of the good ol days when pappaw was alive, I get all Bruted up and think about the good times when I spent the summer's with him. This is a scent tied to memories for sure, very special to me even though I don't prefer it as My scent, paps wore it well with a button up shirt, blue jeans and cowboy boots.

The essence of man as the brand says. I do not typically think of aftershaves when looking for something to wear but I got the comment of how good I smelled one day when I only shaved that morning. So I threw a little bit of this and some other aftershaves I had into the tiny TSA atomizers and to my surprise I actually kind of liked it. This is by no means the best barber shop scent in the world but for this value you can do far worse
