Unda Maris 8

This perfume is exactly what I’d been searching for: A more churchy take on Megamare. So strong you don’t feel like you’re floating on the sea, you’re drowning in it. Do not overspray. The marine note dominates, but without the funky ambergris or algae facets. There’s also a beautiful myrtle incense note woven into it. Elegant, summery, and addictive, I can’t get enough of it!

I love this, just wish it had a larger sillage. Zoologist’s Squid is very similar to this (for me, at least), but Unda Maris 8 is darker and less amber-y. If I had to choose between the two (which I sort of have to, I’m spending way too much on perfume), I’d go for Unda Maris 8. It feels more me

At first you can smell the magic fusion of ozone and incense , then you dive quickly into the bottom of the sea. It is deep and a bit dark not a tipical sunny scent. Very good longevity and moderate sillage. It can be a very attractive choice for incense and sea notes lovers. I love it 🖤💙

Very similar profile to that of Acqua di sale with the addition of incense Marine aquatic, myrtle It is however less salty and comes of more creamy and smooth on the skin

Like you have full spoon of sea. Flowers and tonka bean make it less about marine creatures. It is very unusual yet very wearable.

"Unda Maris” translates to ‘wave of the sea’ from Latin. It also refers to a specific organ stop in the oscillant family, consisting of two identical pipes, one tuned slightly lower than the other. The phasing between them creates a gentle, wave-like effect in the sound, giving the name its meaning. Let’s see if this one produces a beautiful harmony or misses the mark. The opening is a bright burst of herbaceous, slightly bitter citrus. Myrtle and artemisia provide a green aromatic backbone, while citron delivers a sharp, uplifting clarity. A faint camphorous edge from eucalyptus adds freshness, with a hint of playful sweet-sourness, almost like an orange sports drink coming from that citron. The effect is vivid and breezy, like walking along a windswept shoreline, with the citrus remaining the dominant, energizing note. Around forty-five minutes in, the citrus softens and sea notes begin to come through. A subtle trace of nutmeg adds gentle spice, giving the fragrance a grounded and mature feel. Geranium runs through the heart, lending an almost citrus-floral nuance that hints at lemon and a faint mint-like freshness. The fragrance remains bright and aromatic, though softer and more layered than at the start. After about two hours, the base develops depth. Incense, tonka, and patchouli bring smoothness and balance, tempering the earlier sharpness of the citrus and introducing a slightly darker character. These notes are never heavy but give Unda Maris 8 a distinctive richness compared with other herbal marine fragrances. By the three- to four-hour mark, benzoin and white musk add warmth and a touch of saltiness. At this stage, it has a faintly marine quality reminiscent of Squid, though it remains more citrusy and herbal overall. In its early stages, it shares some similarities with Acqua di Sale because the bright citrus and aromatic herbal notes dominate the opening. So all in all, there is a lot going on here, but I think it’s handled well. I really like the tonka and incense combo in the base, which smooths things out and gives it a slightly darker quality. At the same time, once the nutmeg and geranium come in, it can feel a bit like it’s trying to do too much at once, yet the blend of notes keeps it engaging and surprisingly harmonious. I would probably choose Squid, Dans Le Bleu Qui Pétille, and Acqua di Sale over this one, but I can’t take away the fact that it’s a nice mix of other fragrances I love, which is something I really enjoy.

As others have stated, this is an herbal-marine in the well-trodden tradition of Acqua di Sale (myrtle and ambergris interact to offer an impression of tart saltiness). While Unda Maris 8 is indeed a pilgrim in the shadow of AdS, thankfully it can't be called a simple dupe. It introduces an incense note along with a powdery-spice note (likely the nutmeg listed in the pyramid) which distinguishes it slightly. This inclusion of incense and spice pushes it slightly toward the other incense-marines: Zoologist Squid and Serge Lutens Dans le Bleu Qui Petille. It's not as ambergris-heavy as Squid (nor does it have the weird semi-gourmand note), and it's not as smoky and incensey as the Serge Lutens. One might be able to say that Unda Maris 8 represents the precise middle ground between the myrtle-aromatic AdS style and the aforementioned incense-marine style, so if you're really deep into marine frags and you're trying to fine-tune between all of the above, this one may be your winner. Unda Maris smells high quality. In some ways, it's actually smoother and more well-rounded than Acqua di Sale. It lacks a bit of the screaming solar-spicy ylang note which makes AdS so loud; therefore this is a bit quieter and more elegant. The inclusion of incense and spices is well-balanced rather than aggressive. Overall, this is a highly recommendable scent. However, if you own any of the other fragrances I've mentioned above, Unda Maris will probably be a redundant bottle for you, unless you're an absolute die-hard marine fragrance completist. If you don't own any of those others, and you're looking for the best option, put this one on your list of contenders to sample.

wonderfully balmy opening with strong eucalyptus and atyemisia, little cedar. an almost camphorated but very bitter opening. then takes over a fascinating note of salt and myrtle to the nth degree! and the resemblance to salt water is evident to me. luckily this scent doesn't have the horrible opening of salt water but nutmeg bothers me. I like geranium and it is strong. evolution is much faster than in salt water. the sweetness of musk and benzoin appear immediately, vanilla and patchouli are not very relevant. unfortunately there is the tonka bean that I don't like. the rest is a triumph of incense not too clerical. the myrtle, the incense, the eucalyptus and a little sea water remain. but the total is not a sensation of marine freshness unfortunately because the scent is well articulated. but not exactly summer and not a sensation of the sea. 7/10 excellent performance. for me not a summer perfume.

Acqua di Sale through incense Unda Maris 8 places incense within a mineral marine landscape of myrtle, eucalyptus, salt, wind, and coastal stone. A subtle bodily warmth runs beneath the composition, creating an intriguing tension between contemplative incense and human presence. The fragrance is coherent, and particularly convincing in warmer weather, where its marine facets become more apparent. Yet despite the intelligence of its marine-incense dialogue, the perfume often feels surprisingly close to Acqua di Sale, sharing the same rugged Mediterranean imagination viewed through a more meditative lens. An accomplished marine fragrance whose originality never quite matches the ambition of its creator.

The scent creates a mysterious atmosphere using impressions of calone-incense in the base & vegetal-floral notes up top - very hard to pick apart anything else.

#1774 in my “Tour de Fragrance” Got this as a decant from Lucky Scent. An acceptable quality scent with a pretty uncommon composition, and it’s not overpriced. I somewhat enjoy the marine twist to an otherwise greenish scent. I prefer something like Jo Malone "Sage & Sea Salt” or Maison Francis Kirkdjian "Aqua Media Cologne Forte” to this. Usually I’m just not a citron fan. Reminds me of mosquito repellant candles. It does have a similar vibe to Tiziana Tirenzi “Akragas”, which I already own and like better than this. So this is not on my list. But if you don’t have something like this already it’s at least interesting as opposed to commonplace. For me this is a masculine scent, office appropriate, unlikely to offend in any environment. Not sure it would pass muster as date wear with any of the women I know, but don’t think it would be off-putting either. But still, I’ll be surprised if it draws comment from anyone. [Update: Yeah no one noticed all day, not even a gal that always notices the fragrance I’m wearing and comments on it].The price is over $100 so get a decant and try before you buy. Nasty ozonic accord that has the texture of cling-film with slight fruit, mint, and heliotrope inflections languidly laying over a bed of plasticky mosses, sweetened gray soap musks, and doughy balsams. That’s really about it. Very linear, and barely any detectable evolutions save for the aldehydes at the opening dropping away from the perfume as soon as it hits your skin. The spices, tonka and other amberics that are stated are opaque to me; I cannot find them anywhere, except for some extremely vague definitions in the final skin scent, which is mostly synthetic and sticky gray soap musks that are a touch cooly nutty and beeswax-like. These microscopic additions to the soap musks are able to be mistaken for tonka/incense/other amberics only via the power of extreme suggestion and gullibility - but no, in reality they're just not. From the brand: "From the Latin 'wave of the sea,' it refers to a particular stop of the [pipe] organ. It is a 'soul' stop.” Yes, this perfume did indeed stop my spirit in its tracks. Thankfully, Unda doesn't last nearly as long as an extrait should, otherwise it would be a scrubber.

This is horrendous. One of the worst fragrances I've ever smelled. Imagine you are driving along the coast on a hot Summer day and you hit a raccoon, the raccoon flies off the road and lands on a pile of dead fish, then they sit there a week. Bottle that with some incense and you have Unda Maris 8. I'm angry that this fragrance exists.

Let’s delve into the smoke, charred woods, myrrh and the unsettling. The eerie smell of Unda Maris 8 by Filippo Sorcinelli haunts the darkened shore. A sour cloud of medieval incense accompanied by balsamic benzoin beckons me towards the fury of the waves. In its sheer saltiness and intensity the vaporous quality of the eucalyptus give it a lift and tickles my nose. It smells contrastingly dark and resinous, yet fresh and oceanic. As the esoteric smell moves inland it takes on an ethereally warm, spicy character. A watery note of heliotrope, almost turpentinic, bestows a floral dissonance swathed in cumin, mosses and dirty balsams. All the while the breath of the sea, that aquatic note is present throughout the scent into the very dry down resting on a soft woody base of cedar. “The unusual cap of the perfume bottle represents the register of an organ tone, consisting of two organ bars that make the tone oscillate, slightly shifting the phase of the two tones and thus creating a wave of the sea. “ Unlike my usual style of fragrances I was still able to appreciate and be deeply moved by Unda Maris 8 as it is made up of mystic currents and many contradictions forcing you to step out of your comfort zone and feel it all.

Very smooth seawater-incese pairing. The myrtle has that slightly herbal scratchiness I get from Profumum Roma's Acqua di Sale, but I remember that being much more forward with the note and leaning into the lavender-like lushness a bit more. This is almost subdued and contemplative- like you've found an alcove where the water stands still and you're inhaling the humid, cold air where the rock walls accumulate layers of salt from the waves. The geranium is a nice touch here and I think it brings this into a realm of fresh-spicy men's scents that feels a bit familiar, even if the note isn't very loud. This might be one of my favorites from the genre of scents well-documented above in the "reminds me of" section. It's spicy, earthy and resinous, with an evenly blended minty-herbaceousness. Feels like a very "cool" thing to wear, but it gets a little fishy in the further drydown and I would perhaps tone back the saltiness as well, as the herbs bring it into a savory headspace for me. A lovely, experimental kind of perfume otherwise.

I love it. Twilight. Bitterly cold. Liminal. Saline. The incense celebrates the marriage between the sea and the flora, in a union we call the Mediterranean. As others have observed before me, you can perceive each individual note in a balance that feels like a symphony. The scent is austere and calm, not at all melancholy—at least to me—but rather almost encouraging, soothing, and full of hope. Incense has always served as the sidereal vessel of our prayers. Here, the incense changes course and embarks horizontally toward the infinite expanse of water, upon which we pour out our worries, emptying ourselves. “They just want to be in a place where they have the world behind them, and before them nothing but emptiness.” (Sebald, 2002) Blue hour. A bay embraced by Mediterranean scrub. A blend of incense drifts toward the water. A thought setting sail.

I find Unda Maris similar to Black Sea by Lorenzo Pazzaglia where Unda Maris is richer and more sophisticated and aromatic. I wouldn't choose between these two and opt for them both for different occasions: Black Sea when I am by the sea or want to be reminded of a sea landscape with cloudy sky; Unda Maris when I am in a linen suit strolling around an Italian city on the Amalfi coast.

Finally found another unique summer option, glad I copped it. This does not smell like Zoologist Squid but it has the same function! It’s mainly a unique aromatic, citrus and aquatic scent with some slight incense to it as well. I don’t wear religion inspired perfumes but as this is inspired by the organ instrument itself, I’ll give it a pass lol

Reminds me too much of Acqua di Sale with incense on top. Likely the myrtle doing the trick. Not for me unfortunately.
