Special 127

This is it, the smell of Guy Gisburne. Everything went splendidly well this time... but not for Robin Hood. Sir knight came out of the forest. He killed, he destroyed, he etc., because luck's not with heroes 24/7, what's for baddies, huh? So he came out of the forest, this antihero, named Gisburne. He smelled to the bone, but not of grass like Yesenin wrote (well... of grass too, if I count those kinds growing in the forest). He smelled of the forest, down to the whisper of trees, the land, the water, the light and the shade, yes. And he smelled of Robin Hood's blood that was drying up a bit on his sword. He smelled of horse skin that he wore, just like in the ballad. He smelled of sweat. I kinda don't know why, maybe killing isn't always an easy job for guys of gisburnes, or it's just the weather: a hot day, and sir Guy was in a hurry, to get out of the forest. To go where? To see her, of course. After all, there are other very rewarding ways in life, beside killing off robin hoods. So sir smelled the right way, the diagonal and what have you, nice and real. He walked, and the scent walked with him, sometimes getting ahead of the knight, sometimes riding him, sometimes lagging behind. And Gisburne picked a flower for his lady at the stream, and he took it to her, and did not lose it on the way. The flower got bruised a bit, but the knight tried hard, and held it as carefully as possible, but those gentle petals got drying blood, all the forest smells, the sweat, the horse skinness stuck to them anyway. The lady didn't find it a bad thing, though. She was glad to see the knight she loved, and the flower was a nice present to her. As for Robin Hood, dead and covering the flower with blood... something's telling me this lady thought that somebody else was a hero, not Robin.

One of my favorite fragrances. Opens with a sharp bergamot and orange peel note that adds lavender, neroli and lily (ylang ylang) in the middle notes and stays there for the most part. I know this is supposed to have patchouli and musk base notes, but I simply don't get those, at least not in any noticeable amount. What makes this so awesome is that the simplicity of ingredients in this scent still create an incredibly complex fragrance that is equally appropriate at the office or on a weekend day puttering around the home. I get that there is a certain similarity between this and No 89, but I don't think it is pronounced. Special 127 lacks the heavy powder that No 89 brings. There is also far more orange peel (verging on Grapefruit) in the citrus notes, and the florals are geared towards the lily rather than rose in No89. Both great scents, but ultimately different IMO. The only downside is that performance is relatively poor, even by Floris standards. I would put sillage at "soft" and longevity at "moderate". This frag is to be applied if you get out of the shower and head out of the house immediately thereafter.

A brilliantly blended citrus aromatic from a true pedigree perfume maker. The blend is perfect for me, Special 127 is a realistic, juicy, citrus which isn't too sharp, petitgrain and a hint of lavender. There's a white/yellow floral hint in there from ylang and neroli which adds a bit of body without being dominant and a hint of musk. This is a perfectly balanced classic cologne (well EDT) fragrance which is light and effervesant. I can't really speak to performance because I hardly applied any and it lasted about as well as I'd expected...by that I mean...not very. I'd say it's average juice but the citrus lasts quite well not just as top notes and changes on my skin. Floris make some good fragrances and the price is very reasonable, I'd recommend 127...it's nice.

Very sprightly and vivacious. Powdery, zesty, soapy (and highly aromatic like No.89) I got this together with Santal today. I cherish some of the perfumes from this house as much as I cherish my Chanels, Guerlains, Diors and have come to respect English perfumes. I will always remember that aeroplane scene from Scent of a Woman where Al Paccino guesses the perfume worn by the stewardess to the utter amazement of young Chris O'Donnell.

From the realistic hit of freshly peeled orange in the opening to the faint musky drydown this is my favourite fragrance. I go through at least a bottle a year, because I splash it around like holy water at an exorcism. Citrus, soapy, and musky with just a hint of flowers. A terrific, masculine use of neroli. If 127 and Santal were the only fragrances I could own I'd be satisfied. Well, there are perhaps 18 or 67 others, but still...

I really enjoy this scent. It smells clean, classy and classic. It’s a scent for someone comfortable in their own skin. When wearing this I can not be rushed or flustered. It is for someone unconcerned with the fads and obsessions of others, but in control of their own lives. 127 offers something many of us need, a moment of calm.

Glorious Rose/Lavender beauty (at least those are the notes that I get). I much prefer this to the baby powder dry down of 89. Only drawback is it doesn't last long and needs reapplying. Unisex in my opinion. One of my 3 signature scents (others being Floris Neroli Voyage and Czech and Speake No 88)

This fragrance is very special to me indeed. I purchased it at a perfumerie in Cologne after mulling over countless fragrances to find the perfect scent. What a unique blend of fragrances. On my skin it smells slightly of incense, but with a clean, fresh edge. ,

A true Cologne barbershop style! Opening sharp, refreshing, effervescent bergamot. Lavender and neroli give the floral clean tone. I believe it was inspiration for many fragrances that style as ADP Essenza. Excellent!

Special 127 is much more neroli bergamot and orange forward than 89. 89 is much more lavender and geranium forward. I prefer 89 My husband wears it often it's one of my favorite fragrances in his collection. It's just one of those easy go-to masculine fragrances that just smells good in every situation. Special 127 reminds me a lot of Ralph Lauren's Polo Earth but it's soapier and more classic. Very barber shop like. I can definitely see Winston Churchill wearing this because it's very clean very fresh very soapy very business-like. I know we're getting into the season where we're breaking out our fall and winter collection but my husband will wear this decant often come next summer. If you like classic barber shop Orange bergamot neroli fragrances you can't go wrong here. Not to mention the fact that it was worn by one of the greatest leaders in history. Which is pretty darn cool.

Currently my favourite Floris. Fresh and interesting. There is a great depth and refinement to this. It doesn't go to far and is a great green citrus floral. A lot of Floris fragrances feel of their time. This can make them go in and out of fashion. One day they might feel dated and another time they are exactly what you are looking for. Everyone has decades they find dated and others they find inspiring. This aspect can limit their appeal. 127 feels pretty timeless in comparison, there is no baggage. The projection isn't that great but it does last on the skin. I'm not sure it would work as well if it filled a room anyway. When Floris do their sale (new year is the best time), they make this as a shower gel which is worth buying too (it isn't a part of their normal lineup).

Fresh citrus, powder, lavender, other florals in the background. As others have said, similar to Floris N. 89, but much more transparent, lighter, and fleeting. If 89 is for fall, this is for spring and summer. The transparent watery quality slightly reminds me of John Varvatos Artisan Pure, but less woody, more natural, much fainter, more classic. Like to love, but maybe not a must have given my large collection. Of the Floris' I've tested so far, I'd rank them from best to worst as Santal, 127, 89, 71/72, with Santal and 127 being close depending on the season. Scent: 7.5 / Sillage: 5 / Longevity: 5

Floris Special 127 (1890) - waxy fougere - A best-seller of this long-time British perfume house, it starts with an aromatic cologne accord - Lavender, Bergamot, Lemons, and Neroli. This transitions to a prominent creamy floral accord of Rose and Geranium. I’m surprised to smell a burnt candle note - oily, camphor-like, and waxy. I wonder what gives off that scent. Base is woody white musks mixed with Oakmoss and Patchouli

Very clean scent because it's very soapy. The floral notes give the impression they're almost keeping up with the soapy ones. The base notes blend seamlessley a split second later. It's a nice composition as it dries down, but the opening strongly suggests that the wearer just got out of the shower. If I want a spicy, classy soap, this is what I'd be looking for.

Wonderfully fresh, clean fragrance. Has great staying power, even on a really humid day kept me feeling fresh all day. Definitely an all time classic. Citric but not sour. Fresh but not overly soapy. Unisex without smelling like a dumbed down aftershave.

Soapy, clean, and sweet. That's my impression of this scent. I like it at lot, but it strikes me more like a nice room scent, or one for really nice soap, than something I'd wear.

Winston Churchill, the iconic and legendary larger than life British Prime Minister, who valiantly led the outnumbered and outgunned British nation against Nazi Germany between 1939-1945, was allegedly a fragrance enthusiast, and rumors have it, that Mr Churchill had two signature fragrances: Floris Special No 127 and Penhaligon's Blenheim Bouquet. Floris Special No 127 is very similar in its scent profile to Floris No 89, with the difference being, that Special No 127 is a fresher, cleaner, minimalist, citrus, neroli, linear unisex scent with little or no sillage or projection, and a longevity of maximum 1-2 hours, while Floris No 89, is a heavier scent - a woodsy, citrus, soapy, powdery scent, with a heavier sillage and projection, and a longevity of 5-7 hours. Someone at basenotes wrote that Special No 127 is the "chassi" which No 89 is based on. I agree. Floris No 89 must have been inspired by No 127, since No 127 smells like the foundation, the "skeleton" or the "chassi" of the more complex and heavy smelling No 89. But to simplify things: Special No 127 smells like a unisex, fresh, citrus, neroli, bathroom detergent, while No 89 smells like a unisex, or slightly masculine leaning, woodsy citrus bathroom detergent, mixed with lavender and rose, and baby powder. None of these two fragrances is my favorite. They are very underwhelming and unsatisfying and Special No 127's scent profile is nothing but a shadow of Winston Churchill's greater than life personality. Final score: 5/10.

This was a blind buy. Something about a perfume made by the oldest English perfumery for a late 19th century Russian nobleman and later worn by people such as Churchill and Eva Peron intrigued me. The opening is like someone squeezing fresh bergamots and very sour oranges to my face, almost too sharp to not cause a physical reaction (think: the way bartenders sqeeze the citrus peels when preparing a cocktail, but instead of the peel you get sprayed whole fruits). The fragrance remains sour and bitter until there's only clean musk left. The floral and patchouli and subtle to nonexistent to my nose. This is unisex but more masculine leaning, and conjures up someone in a tailored, crisp and clean white shirt. It's a bit classic and old-fashioned but not dated. Projection is low to moderate. Longevity is about 8-10 hours. It's quite versatile, and doesn't offend or surprise in any way. The pricing is quite good for the quality of the juice, and it is always a nice bonus to have something as historical as this fragrance.

Classy, old-school, barbershop, aromatic fougere. Too bad I just can ́t get over the fact that it reminds me of urinal deodorizers (the blue things that they use in urinals at public restrooms). I have tried it a couple of times to let it grow on me but I don't make any progress. If my mind didn't associate it with deodorizers, I bet I would love the fragrance. I'd describe it as being fizzy-sterile-sharp-floral-citrus fresh, definitely for spring and summer. 5/10.

Opening is sharp and medicinal. As it dries it becomes familiar. Smelled this DNA on several people before. Very old world and classic. Reminds me of something someone who does yoga, shops at Whole Foods, and wears thrift shop clothing would wear. Hipsters take note. Totally unisex.

An Eau de Cologne with heavy emphasis on the components that I prefer to avoid. It has a sharper, more sour lemon than usual, sitting on top of a more powdery base than usual, so I assume there's probably a fair amount of iris. Starts out too sour, ends up too floral. It's a bit too feminine for me, though I would still call it unisex from a marketing perspective. Buy their Cefiro instead, which is fresher, with a crisp airiness. Also, Cefiro starts out weaker but has a slightly stronger base which disperses farther.

Initially this is very ‘old world barbershop’ complete with red, white and blue pole. The kind of scent you get slapped on after a close cutthroat shave. The citrusy, lemony floral opening top notes soon dies down to the musk, patchouli base notes that I really don’t care for. Sophisticated but ultimately not for me.

This wasn't for me, unfortunately. The rose mixed with the ylang and the neroli smelled too soapy old school for me.

Warm, citrus, soap, boring, linear. Not very special.

I'm truly glad that I went to the effort of tracking down a sample of Floris Special 127. Citrus scents aren't usually my cup of tea, however this fragrance is more of a citrus aromatic, meaning that it's less sour and citrusy, and more herbal. I find this fragrance quite unique, and easily unisex. It opens with an invigorating and green burst of bergamot, petit grain and soothing, masculine lavender. Oh, how I adore lavender! The lavender accord is what makes this fragrance so lovable. The more this fragrance settles, the more herbaceous it becomes. A tart-like geranium accord works beautifully alongside the lavender and citrus. Concentrated rose oil can also be smelt, adding a rich floral texture. On a really hot day, Floris Special 127 reaches its full potential. I quite enjoyed wearing this fragrance during the heat wave we experienced in February. It's one citrus scent that I find myself reaching for time and time again. Not many perfume enthusiasts talk of Floris, and I personally think this needs to be remedied. It's a classic house with many quality scents on offer. Floris Special 127 is seriously underrated. I would say it's special indeed. The only unfortunate thing about this fragrance is its lack of lasting power. Sometimes I can only manage three hours wear out of Floris Special 127. The lady whom I bought the sample from, encouraged me to layer this fragrance with bergamot essential oil to increase the longevity and to amp up the citrus notes. I am yet to try this, but I second her suggestion.

Bergamot is the leading lady from beginning to end of the show. A lady at work, who used a clothes spray laden with bergamot, passed my cubicle and asked me if that is my perfume "It's nice" she said although she is typically a nice unoffending lady. I found this bottle at Winners for $80 and immediately researched online for reviews. This is highly rated here so I finally had to try the juice. It is very citrusy and herbal. I wore this for about two weeks. I think it is well done but I don't think it suits me. When wearing this, I envision an English manor house with proper tea towels, tea sets, monogrammed bathroom towels, chaps and whips...with this scent wafting in the bathroom. Very elegant but I think better suited to an older English gentleman. Too herbal for me. The sillage also doesn't last very long. After two hours, I have to scrunch my nose into my arm to smell the scent. I think this is more reserved for perfumistas who have distinct classic tastes. Somehow, I felt that there was room for yet another citrus aromatic in my collection, and Special 127 had been recommended to me more than once by those aware of those fragrances for which I tend to gravitate. With No. 89 and Elite already in my possession, I figured, why not have a triumvirate from the legendary house, and here we are today: a hot summer morning and I am doused with the effervescence that is 127. After the zest of the bergamot and citrus sparkle upon application, there is this effect of the freshly laundered and pressed, attributed to the harmony of lavender, petitgrain, and neroli. It's mellow, but persists close to the skin, making my skin somehow feel insulated from the blasts of heat and humidity. After a number of hours, a soapy musk clings on with nary a ghostly whisper of citrus on the clothing. I am happy to have this piece of history. Pro tip: overspray for full effect.

As a lover of Floris tradition I was, to be entirely honest, quite disappointed with Special 127. The sharpness of barbershop sterilising fluid and spice as in Tiger Balm was present in initial abundance (not a bad thing) but it disappeared very quickly upon dry down. On my skin chemistry the whole experience was lost in less than an hour with barely any discernible trace. There are comparisons to be made with Floris 89 which has better longevity, albeit not brilliant, more spice and a powdery finish. Sorry Floris but for now I will stick with Elite which lingers for 24 hours and achieves what 89 and 127 simply do not.

Variation of classic men cologne... This is a muskier blend that that veers sharply towards masculinity, as i personally see this musk as dirty water! or the water that results from washing your hands with soap which i think it is the overdosed mixture of bergamot and ylang with lavender and petitgrain. I can't deny that this is classic, but i very much dislike that dirty water musky mixture although i ADORE musky blends like "Hammam Bouquet" by Penhaligon's... but this one is a no for me.

Love this classy, not necessarily dated nor old school, fragrance. Similar to ADP and others from the era but very well built and surprisingly wearable nowadays, well for more mature crowd :) The natural floral notes give this gem a slight throwback twist, but the rest is very relevant today: green notes, citruses, younger greener patchouli. Overall, great summertime more formal daytime wear, very high quality!!!

I tested this one yesterday on my wrist and it reminded me of Habit Rouge, although this one was on the market before, of course. Whether you regard it as "timeless" or "old fashioned" is a question of perception. However, I can't regard it as unisex, it's way too masculine. Needless to say, the quality of the scent as such is very good. ****

The top notes of this fragrance are very vibrant and "fizzy", almost like carbonated soda if you will. An excellent fresh out of the shower scent. Floris Special no. 127 rushes through the top and heart notes and settles down with the musk and patchouli within 1.5-2 hours. A very easy scent to wear! Edit: Really nice scent to overspray!

Special 127 is a clean and invigorating scent in the vein of Jean Nate, but a bit more tart, with a lightly spicy drydown. I wore this during a particularly hot summer one year and it never, ever turned sour or "off" smelling. Both men and women should find this scent easy to wear and easy to like.

Screams "quality " and old money from a distance. Kind of soapy clean , aromatic . Too masculine to be regarded as unisex, in my opinion. Better suited for a gentleman that is past the age or raging hormones and into the age of wit, wisdom and classy sexappeal,not yet gray and still charming .

I detected a kind of crazy sweetness that had been following me through out this fragrance. A green, floral, yet soft sweetness. Not sure to say yes or no. Because 127 is dewy and intriguing due to the sweetness, but at the same time that sweetness keeps nagging me and driving me nuts.

Soapy, floral old school aromatic. Pleasant enough, but I've got others I prefer more in this space, such as AdP Colonia Essenza.
