Turnbull & Asser 71/72

I like Floris have dabbled with many of them over the years. Honey Oud is the only one I regularly keep and love. But I have tried most of the rest, I like the bath oils and soaps; I've had all their range at some point through the side products. Found a Floris concession in a department store, was excited to see somewhere that stocked it (it's been a while), was just going to get a soap but Turnbull hooked me. In the car on the way home it was the best scent. Was addictive in how deep it was and the whole thing developed in an amazing way. I ordered a bottle when I got home. It's good overall and I'm pretty pleased I got it. The opening notes while pleasant are pretty understated. It works though because these notes any louder would be a turn off. It's not bad but a bit dated it smells refined, well made and very 90's. Has that kinda citrus, metallic but floral thing going on. Reminds me of some of the other floris scents and penhaligons espirit du roi in particular. The fact it doesn't blow your face off gives it a class and depth. I really like wearing this for work. As the scent develops the Oud really comes out. It is beautiful and timeless. I love the smoky, ashy, velvet smoothness of it while those top notes from the first blast hum underneath. Although it doesn't have that much projection it lasts all day on the skin and continues to change in good ways throughout. It doesn't quite reach the heights of Honey Oud but is easily the 2nd most impressive Floris I've tried.

These Floris eau de parfum fragrances require a light touch in order to be appreciated. I douse myself in Special 127 or Cefiro, for example, and it's fine. But if I spray 71/72, Jermyn St, Neroli Voyage, or the Spencer Hart Palm Springs EdP's heavily they are awful. Two or 3 sprays and these fragrances open up gently and I can appreciate the complexity as they cycle through the phases from top notes to base. Of course, that means they become skin scents more quickly, which in most cases is fine with me. I'm not looking for a beast. 71/72 is like a cool weather, more formal version of Cefiro. It starts out with the same gentle citrus opening, but as it dries down I get a very pleasant wood and slightly spicy base that is similar to the base of Floris' Jermyn Street and to a certain extent the prominent lavender note found in the drydown of Pen's Sartorial. This is probably what gives each of these fragrances the clean, pressed fabric accord that is common to them all, though they absolutely do not smell the same. 71/72 is clean without being soapy; rather, I find a crisp, dry juniper, and light smoke on new sawn wood. A very nice fragrance for working in close proximity to others. Like most of Floris' male catalogue. I feel for those who've come here looking for helpful information about this fragrance only to find squabbles about plastic hangers and the personal fragrance choices of London shop assistants.

As the review below me points out accurately, the oud is ashy, gravelly, a little sour and animalic while still feeling organic. A touch of salt too. The amberwood is dosed moderately and hidden well. Niche, but totally wearable and dapper, although may be initial challenging until you get used to it. Pine, lavender, labdanum (not listed), and incense. Classy, mature, and deep without feeling heavy. Reminds me of Atelier des Ors Crépuscule Des Âmes, Floris Santal, and Bond Cooper Square had a three-way baby who was born with 5oclock shadow. The feeling mirrors how I feel wearing Creed Royal Oud and a suit, though they're very different from each other. Conclusion: High end textiles at a bespoke tailor. Clean and crisp starched suit meets salty sour oud ash. One of my favorites from a house that has many favorites. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 ××××××××××××××××××××× Scent 96/100 Performance 40/100 ×××××××xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx P.S. I wear Ormond Man and although the vibe is similar (juniper) the fragrances themselves are very different.

Opens with citrus and lavender, which disappears within minutes. Settles into a woody and pleasant base that, despite the notes on Floris' site and here, exactly like photorealistic real ambergris (to the point where it reminds me of Les Indemodables Escales en Indonesie). This scent is very soft. The ambergris gives this a slight animalic edge while staying mostly in a very safe zone via the agar- and sandalwood. Overall very pleasant, and I could see myself buy this eventually.

My Dad wears this one and I really really like it. It’s a gentleman’s scent. Mature but not stuffy, polished but still comfortable, expensive but not flash. I don’t know why but when I describe other people’s scents, I tend to focus on the impression they leave on me, rather than the actual notes! A timeless gentleman’s scent. One of my favourites.

Fresh and spicy aromatics compliment the woody amber notes. To my nose it always has these two apposing fragrances at the same time vying for your affection but working in harmony. I believe Floris says that this is an eccentric fragrance for the sophisticated man or something like that. Either way it is a great scent and I need a new bottle.

I must say that the two reviews below me have me utterly confused as my experience is WILDLY DIFFERENT from what they've described! I mean ZERO disrespect as everyone experiences fragrances differently and skin reacts differently as well, but WOAH! What

Better on paper than on my skin, where I loose the freshness. It becomes a polite oud-lavender-spices scent. Could suit mature men really well for the office. 7/10

A combination of Century & 34 rue de Bellechasse. I own both; I prefer this. Best signature scent I’ve ever smelled. 10/10.

This mixture of iris, oud, incense gives it a tobacco scent on my skin. he is magnificent

Dear Amanda Williams Palmer, I can assure you that my intention was not to "insult" anyone but merely to express my views on the scent profile. I'm not sure if you've paid any attention to my actual review, but I did say that yes, I "like" the fragrance, but not enough to buy a full bottle. I think it's a decent and pleasant scent, for sure, but nothing out of the ordinary. My review is actually not about the Turnbull & Asser brand or company per se but about the fragrance itself, which happens to utilize the name of the brand. I didn't use the word "cheap." I wrote "synthetic." Many expensive fragrances (belonging to many brands) can indeed have a synthetic scent profile. Many Floris scents are indeed expensive but fail to make an impression on me, regardless of whether they are natural or synthetic-smelling. I did write, "It smells like you're stepping inside a high-end clothing store." How can this be insulting? You're free to criticize my favorite fragrances endlessly, and I can promise you I won't take it personally at all. The fragrance and the wearer of the fragrance are not the same thing. Bitter oudy woody amberwood... Harsh tobacco ashes with oud like notes and amberwood. I detect harsh smoke & some incense with tough lavender ashes. I can't deny that i was revolted when i first sniffed this and i believe this came after reviewing and sniffing "Chypress", "JF", & "Cefiro" but i can't deny that the revolting feelings are slowly getting revoked and it is kind of interesting and merely addictive with that animalic tobacco-ish incense-ish smokiness mix that i am getting when it cools down! & Ya, i guess i can sense the vibes of "X - Men" by Clive Christian somehow. I guess i can comfortably classify this blend as beautiful, it is indeed herbal bitter for my taste but beautiful.

This is a rather nice one. This is the second best Floris scent after Floris 1962, in my opinion. What does Floris Turnbull & Asser 71/72 smell like? It quite literally smells like you're stepping inside a high end clothing store, and you smell the scent of brand new, factory-fresh clothes on plastic coat-hangers, and the staff's sweet smelling synthetic perfumes hitting your nostrils, when you open the door to the store. This is a "like" for me, but not good enough to warrant a full bottle. Final score: 7/10.

Floris Turnbull & Asser 71/72 (2016) - juniper sandalwood - I didn’t know that most customers of the bespoke suit maker are Middle eastern as this perfume has accords more common to attars. It starts with the traditional cologne/fougere accord that this perfume house is known for, but as it dries down I get smoky Incense, Sandalwood, Oud/Amberwood notes and Amber spices. I enjoy the well-built woody structure with whiffs of smoke & lemons. Versatile

If you like the starched laundry feel, this and jermyn street more than get the job done. This one feels a tad more formal, the starchy notes overtaking the citrus whereas in Jermyn street the lemon and lime are brought to the forefront. I like them both, but love neither.

A more wearable oud, though I am disappointed with the performance of it, as I had high expectations from that kind of punchy start.

Smells good but very polite, discreet. I guess if you wanted that for the "office" I can see how it would be a good fit. To me, even being a fan of the FlorisLondon house, it's just too polite for an edp. It's a shame too because if this smelled more potent it would be among my favorites from Floris. It was originally designed as a bespoke fragrance for Turnbull & Asser, a clothing store on Jermyn Street in London, so it's possible they wanted it to be as polite as it is. My experience with other Floris edp's is quite different. They're usually potent & long lasting.

Start with boring old citrus and aromatic lavender, as well as woody juniper tree, not the fruit. I'm not saying being "boring old" is a bad thing, that's Floris's trademark after all. When the volatile players left the show, the perfume went underground, becoming a discreet whispering scent. This is when things start to get interesting (by Floris standard). A peppery/spicy wood (is that you, oud?) and a sweet/nutty resin-y wood (amberwood, perhaps?) start to dance on skin. They twirl around, change paces, lasts for hours and hours. Everything happened strictly on skin level: it's a secret party, no one else is supposed to know. You gotta give it to Floris, even if they wanna try something slightly less boring, they do it in a stealthy way.

Was one of my favourites when I tried in-store but on skin a few months later the sample is giving... the nivea mens spray deodorant I used to wear in highschool. Maybe the familiarity of the fragrance drew me to it and I didn't pick up on the similarities. Not terrible but also not where I go for an EDP.

If this is supposed to be a clean white shirt then I don't know why they dirtied it up with orris and "oud". And the sandalwood isn't the creamy barbershop style but rather the heavy syrupy Boss The Scent style. So that's a no from me then.
