Borneo Oud

Okay, no reviews, no problem! I bought this last week and Borneo Oud is a surprise. Very simple to be fdb. Its incredibly one-sided woody scent. Smells like lying in a hollowed out dry log of driftwood on a beach, perhaps on Borneo. Lasting for about 7 hours on my skin and is one-sided over all notes. Maybe only 4 accords and is wood dominated. If you like dry driftwood / oud(agarwood), you will not be disappointed. Does not evolve during the day, stays strong and true to the name. Fun to try👍 Recommended, even if the price is a bit much (589US$) for 15ml.

I just got a sample today and it is mind blowing! As a starting point you can think of Kilian's Straight to Heaven in its blend of woody notes with sweet dried fruits, and a boozy spiciness, but this is just a starting point because there is much more depth and complexity here and every time I sniff it I get something else: dark florals, light honeyed whisky accords (Dalwhinnie), varnish, earthy accords, and something resinous and syrupy. The only thing I have ever smelled so complex is a Burgundy Grand Cru. I was considering Xerjoff's Kampuchea Noir, but it is just too expensive for even a blind buy of a 1 mL sample, and so I went for this instead. But curious if anyone - maybe René - can comment on how these two scents compare. Now on my skin (above was on a test strip) resemblance to Kilian STH has vanished due to the woody-cedar smell no longer manifesting itself - and now it is much darker, almost like some kind of exotic floral shoe polish or salted black liquorice. Definitely a scent for Count Dracula in his most seductive mood! Eager to layer with Kilian Black Phantom or Xerjoff Starlight...I think milky gormands would be a nice match for this. Really quite amazing and surprising because it has none of the barnyard, bandaid, medicinal smell we associate with Oud. As a chemist I detect naphtha and other floral sweet hydrocarbons (a product of nature here), but as a wine connoisseur I am reminded of a bottle of 1995 Leroy Romaneé St Vivant (which cost 900 USD in 1999) that was so good I sipped it on my roof as I watched the sun rise: it was something from nature that was unmanipulated but tasted and smelled like it was from another planet, and that is what I get with FDB Borneo Oud. Update: I tried layering it with Killian Single Malt and MFK Grand Soir (1 spray BO, 3 sprayed of the layered fragrance) and the results are mind boggling. I am a big Kilian fan and always loved Single Malt but thought it was a bit light and lacked the depth of Roja Enigma Parfum -problem solved! With Borneo Oud, Single Malt takes on a deep and genuine scotch accord with tobacco nuances, which were in neither pure offering - perhaps Borneo Oud + vanilla creates a tobacco accord? But now it seems to even surpass Enigma Parfum. With Grand Soir it takes a multi-dimensional/one dimensional fragrance in Grand Soir, which always smelled beautiful but a little flat and gives it such dynamic headroom and complexity without sacrificing the original character. One gets the impression of the finest Cuban tobacco drenched in cognac - must be the amber accord mixing with the Oud to again create a sweet, wet tobacco amazing! This is like adding a subwoofer to a stereo, not only do you get new bass frequencies but the mid and treble are also enhanced. Fantastic on its own and layering with anything that is vaguely boozy but lacks depth or dimension.

Borneo oud is darker, compared to Pure oud, more rotten wood/damp forest floor oud with highlighted smoky notes. Linear on my skin. Oil is not very thick, dark honeyed in color and lasts around 4-5 hours from single swipe. You can find comparable oils everywhere without the need to buy 15 ml. Nice but not more than that.
