Ebony Fume

#1010 in my "Tour de Fragrance" I'm surprised that people are still surprised that these clones can be made for so little money. You should watch the BBC documentary "Perfume's Dark Secret." Just search. It's free to watch. You will learn that even the most expensive fragrances on the market have on average around $10 worth of perfume oils. Packaging, marketing, Johnny Depp endorsements aside, the actual contents of the bottles costs very little. There can be differences in quality, the use of synthetics. But look how often you see "bergamot" listed, not "Sicilian Bergamot" or "Calabrian Bergamot" (because the EU adopted a rule that those labels cold only be advertised for the real thing). "Bergamot" is always one of 350+ available synthetic oils on the market, and some, like the one used by Lataffa, are kinda screechy and cheap smelling, and some not, but they don't smell like the real thing. Nevertheless you see the synthetic in some pricey scents. So back to this scent. It's a solid note-for-note dupe of Tom Ford "Ebene Fume", but there is a slight difference in the resins that if you have the real thing or have experienced the real thing you will probably notice in the opening. If you've never had Ebene Fume, then don't worry about it. In a half hour I don't really notice it so much. In the opening it reminded me of a non-edible version of flax oil, linseed oil, that we mixed with turpenes to paint wood slat houses. I loved the smell first thing in a cool summer morning, but after mixing it and painting with it all day in the blazing hot sun I was very much over it. And I would suggest this isn't a warm weather scent. But used conservatively in winter it shouldn't offend anyone in any setting, and at this price point it's a brilliant blind buy.

Picked this up about a week ago, initially I was a little off put by the STRONG incense. I don't know what was up but after the first couple sprays that day the incense mellowed out so I could actually smell anything else for the first 30 minutes. Let's go to my impression: First spray: palo santo and incense straight up yum. I get a little of the pepper (thought I may be spelling the resins more, comes across peppery. The floral note is very mild and is definitely coming from the mids. 15 minutes later: that incense has mellowed more and you get that almost citrus from the palo santo, still very woody and spicy from the resin and pepper, little leather coming in the bass. 1 hour later: given way to wood and pepper, some mild white but kind of earthy floral warm, round soft. 4 hours later: pretty much glued to smelling my shirt at this point, resinous wood, almost want to look around the room incase someone is burning a lovely piece of palo santo, I get that smell throughout imo the development for me is the incense changing from a sultry smoke into a background warmth mixed with the wood and resin spice. Overall love this as it won't seem to change too much throughout wearing. Longevity is great, it'll get faint after 6-8 hours but if you tilt your nose towards where you sprayed it'll come back out, spray this on an undershirt and let it seep out. I will also say that I layered this with a "blue" dna scent and loved that it added the extra wood and smoke, this would be good to layer with something missing that warmth.

IDK about the "Repellent thing" bc I get ZERO "Repellant." I just know that this smells freakin' AMAZING! Plus every time I wear Ebony Fume someone comments on how great I smell, and I mean (EVERY TIME). After having it for around 4 months Its become a certified beastmode, super long-lasting woody, incense l dream. Im getting like 8 to 9 hours on skin and its still detectable as a soft skin-scent beyond that, so unless folks just need to let this "Maturate" a bit, I am ultra confused about folks claiming this has "Moserate Longevity." Oh and this stays days clothes. Absolutely excellent 9 outta 10 minus one point for lack of versitilty bc I cant emagine wearing this in high heat. I just know this thing SLLLAPS! I must be honest and say that I have yet to smell the OG Ebene Fume, but if ya like deep, woody, incensy fragrances that smell "Expensive", do tourself a favor and DO NOT pass Ebony Fume up!.. Trust 💯

I have to admit, I’m one of the believers in maceration with middle eastern fragrances. Of the many I own, this may be the one least in need of rest in a dark room. Right out of the box, this one is great. Now, to compare it to the inspiration fragrance by TF... I’m having a hard time finding differences. A former coworker would wear EF in the office all the time, and that’s how I became familiar with this particular profile. I tried for a few hours after spraying the back of my hand to spot a difference in the quality of aroma, overall fragrance accuracy, and performance (to my best recollection). I cannot seem to nail even one down. It smells wonderful. If deep, very wood-forward, and almost dark fragrances are your style, this is not going to disappoint. I washed that hand half a dozen times at least, and I could easily smell it even still. I’m very pleased. 10/10 at its price.

I will preface this by saying this is not a perfect match for Tom Ford's èbéne fumé. But it also isn't 300 dollars for a bottle. I got my bottle of ebony fume because Tom Ford's is 300 dollars. And this is darn close. Some of the notes don't last as long as Tom's do, and some notes are more prevelant and visa versa. But all in all it's a nice way to get that scent whenever you want and not feel guilty for spraying it every day. Beautiful peppery, smokey, woody, resinous fragrance that has an intimate bubble around you for those who do get in close. It's not going to last all day but I don't expect it to, Tom Ford's doesn't either. If you want something you can travel with to get the same vibe for a fraction of the cost you can't really beat ebony fume.

Wow! I have a sample of the OG coming to specifically see if I wanna drop some serious cash on the OG, probably only an ounce. Anyway I have only a $3 sample but at $23 I would think at minimum I will own this bottle and if the OG is better, which I fully expect I would pay $125 for 30ml. However if there’s not enough difference then it’s this bottle only. I frickin love this. So masculine and a throwback vibe. It’s not old school but gives that kind of vibe. Modern throwback if that makes sense. Strong spice and smoke with sweet resins, creamy woods and leather with a floral touch from either violet or rose. Love love love

Compliment beast! Very masculine, oudy with a touch of floral/rose sweetness. Someone told me that it has a grassy note (papyrus?) that I can't detect. Strong at first, but becomes more subtle after the first 30 minutes or so. People notice this scent for sure. Lasts all day: the sweetness goes away after about 8-12 hours, but the wood remains as a skin scent (and it hangs around for a long time on clothes). Not sure that this is a safe blind buy, but these types of frags work well with my body chemistry. A banger, 9/10! Would I buy this again? Yes.

Let's forget for a minute that this is a clone scent for Tom Ford's Ébène Fume. Objectively speaking, Ebony Fume is a PHENOMENAL high quality fragrance, which is very pleasing to the senses. To appreciate this perfume, you need to really enjoy rich, dark, woody fragrances with an aromatic undertone. It layers beautifully with hyper sweet gourmand fragrances like Her Confession and Caramel Cascade, but extremely pleasant on its own. This is how a woody fragrance ought to be made. I'm obsessed!

In my humble opinion Ebony Fume is a great dupe of the Tom Ford one, with a more agreeable and polite smell. It is better blended, compared to the original that to my nose is harsher. Sure Ebène Fumè has got a better duration, but on the deep drydown there is a citric almost acrid smell in the likes of truffles that really doesn’t agree much with my nose. The dupe is sweeter, fresher and is 95% similar to the original, at a fraction of the price. Very highly recommended.

literally a perfect dupe of the tom ford. if you are considering the tom ford, dont waste your time on the $100< bottle and instead buy this. incredible woody scent. i love it. the resins and the pall santo are the strongest notes for me, but it is just great. very good christmas scent, or for a late fall, chilly day. i can see this being overpowering to some people, but to me it is perfect.

I rarely smell the originals, just blind buy based on the notes and reviews. I had an idea of what this would smell like, but when it arrived - wow, I was blown away. After wearing this on and off during last autumn, it's scent-locked that time. I went and got another two bottles. Yes, this works fine for winter too, but it's in the autumn where it really shines for me.

Anyone familiar with Fragrance World - Ebony Smoke? The 150ml bottle is for sale. Is it the same fragrance with a different name? Edit: I bought it because my 80ml bottle of Ebony Fume was running out too quickly and I can say that to my nose it's the same fragrance with the same performance althought the color is clearer. For those who might be interested.

This fragrance is amazing. I was a bit unsure when I got it but this to me has that nostalgic Christmas smell to it. My girlfriend and best friend also love this scent and told me it also smells like Christmas. This is a very good winter scent, especially around the holidays.

I've had this for a few months, top off; smells like a sumptuous leather sofa treated with palo santo and ebony wood oil. Cool/cold weather only, leaves a considerable trail and lasts for hours on skin and days on clothes. Love it, a great dupe to Ébène Fumé.

Deals like this don't come around often. $29 for a bottle of incredible scent. I'm mesmerized. (nice heavy bottle too)

My impulse is to ALWAYS look for a JusttheFactsMan review because 90% of the time I can't add a thing to his work. That said, I don't agree that the opening is more chemical than not. I get some sweetness on the initial spray that he doesn't mention. I'll also note that - while I've had this for 6 months - it doesn't project very well. However, it has incredible staying power. I'm a nurse so I work 12 hour shifts and am often finishing up charting at hour 13. I'll spray this on at 0630 and can still smell it when I hit the hay at 2230. I go noseblind to it pretty quick, so I don't notice it through the day (and - honestly - have never had anyone say anything about it, though I tend to spray it on my chest and the armpits of my t-shirt as I don't want to trigger someone). But if you get into the shower at the end of the day, be prepared to smell it again. When the hot water hits my chest - BAM! Ebony Fume like I just sprayed it. I imagine this would be great layered with some of the more sweet-smelling amber based scents, giving them some heft in the bottom / drydown.

It’s a smooth fragrance even though the first minutes are a bit “in your face” but quickly settles into a dry Smokey wood. You must like this type of fragrance profile in order to enjoy it and appreciate it , there’s no citrus, green note or rose to breathe some fresh air. It’s all wood and smokiness. A good perfume for a great price

I got his a few months ago because I either have a fake or weak TF Ebene Fume...I like what it smells like though and it has little to do with this. I got this cheap to round off an order so I can't complain. To me this has an oaky dry wood scent with a smoky palo santo thing going on. The wood is like walking into a woodshop. It's very dry. It's got a bit of a bitter spike like raw leather animalic scent. Definitely a bit smokey so there's the incense. The palo Santo is present supported by the violet I assume as the floral note. Right now the woodiness is harsh to be honest. It lacks the delicate balance of my possibly fake TF. The TF review I have is total love. It's a light smokey floral where this is a dry woody palo santo incense. I can see me wearing my fake more often and i would at least enjoy the scent readily for a few minutes. The TF EF I have is more floral less woody. I imagine it will mature into something different as all my scents have. From lattafa to Givenchy they all mature somewhat. I rated this one as OK.

Nose Note #110 I smell some red berries, like cranberries. In the opening it's ambiguously earthy, then the berry aspect surfaces, and then it's kind of woody, but I would never tell without looking at the notes Definitely a niche fragrance. Somewhat pleasant, but not my cup of tea I can relate to the repellent smell. My wife also smells something alike

I see what people are saying about repellent. While I am a fan of the original and love incense scents, this one is made with some super cheap synthetic accord - very common in cheap middle eastern fragrances. The best way I could describe it is cold halitosis or someone with unbrushed teeth sneezing on the bus. Vile.

DO not blind buy. I’m not getting most of the notes in the reviews. As a Gen-X’er, the only note I get from this is scented blueberry/ fruit punch markers from the 1970’s and ‘80’s. Whatever the scented blue markers were... IYKYK. No incense, no church, no woods. Pure, 1980’s blueberry marker chemical smell. If you wanna risk $20 in a toss up, go for it!

I got a decant of this fragrance. I don’t tend towards exaggeration. I don’t have a delicate nose nor am I closed minded when it comes to scents. This smells like urine. I tried it again another day thinking maybe my nose was off. It still smelled like urine. After it dries down there is faint dry woods but it still smelled close to urine.

Hate it, to smokey for me. Don't know when I would wear it and why?

1. It is stated here on the site that the perfume was released in 2018, that is, earlier than the original Tom Ford perfume, which was released in 2021, and this is probably a mistake. 2. I think there is a successful and accurate clone here, both in terms of its projection time and in terms of the concentration of the scent. 3. It seems to me that Tom Ford should be held responsible for the excessive price they are asking for "Bena Puma", and this clone greatly undermines the trust in the quality material that Tom Ford should give you. 4. I must admit that this clone made me very uncomfortable, and that is because I really liked Tom Ford Bena Puma, and now I understand that it is possible to reach this level with some cheap materials. 5. The original sells for $200, while the clone sells for $15. Waiting for a response from Tom Ford.

I unfortunately did what other reviewers told us not to do - I blind bought it! It resembles the scent of a mosquito repellent called "Djungelolja". Not for me. But my work collegue seemed to like it. Personally, I cannot find any trace of Palo Santo in there. I enjoy smokey and "oriental" scents, but this was straight dark. Addendum 20250204. After wearing it for a few weeks I start to enjoy it. I like the "leathery" note on it along with what I cannot detect. Since scents are subjective and could be interpreted differently by each individuals, I can only recommend you to test it on your skin first. You might enjoy it.

I’ve had this fragrance for quite some time but never actually smelled the original Tom Ford version until recently. Now I can compare them, I’ll say fragrance world have replicated the Tom Ford version almost 1:1. I picked this up for £15.99 in the UK and the value for money for that price is insanely good. It’s not exactly mass appealing because it lacks sweetness and some notes can be polarising to others but if it’s something you can enjoy it’s a masterpiece. Not blind buy safe especially if you’re not into woods and smokiness, but for the price I really can’t fault this.

Great bottle, woeful lid, shithouse sprayer. it's wood and timber with some tree thrown in, bit of smoke to ground it and all the other notes are irrelevant. very masculine, very good, very cheap, year-round ballsprayer that you wouldn't be annoyed if it was the only thing in the gym bag. did i mention it's woody? it's woody. very woody. lumberjack's wet dream. next time you see in a bargain bin, grab it.

@Mcavian1985 If you take the five minutes necessary to do a proper Google search through the many online retailers--and to seek out the discount and promo codes--you'll discover that this too can be had for much less than $300. I picked up an authentic 100ml of this stuff in May for $240, shipped. Yes, the 100ml, not the 50ml. They're out there.

I'm so glad to see this clone finally added to fragrantica. This is probably my favorite dupe of all time. I even prefer it to the original. The dupe has the same bones as the original, just way sweeter in my opinion. This is back up bottle worthy. Strong scent trails and it lasts for days when sprayed on fabrics. The perfect coat perfume.

Yeah boi, a big old smokey wood, nice for a change. Good clone of the original. Recommended. Literally what it says on the box.
