Teisenddu

It is pronounced tay-sen-thee, often spelled teisen ddu, and commonly referred to as torta negra, it is a dense, brown, Welsh fruit cake. It is delicious, both the cake and the perfume. Seriously, the perfume is making my mouth water, and, most notably, it is a very interesting take on the gourmand genre because it doesn't just rely on your usual cast of characters - baking spices, cocoa, vanillics, syrupy sugar, basically your typical modern-day band of amberic notes used for gourmand - and instead lets some new and lesser known characters of the genre have quite a bit of say, namely florals and leather. The opening notes are tantalizing. There is plenty of oily orange zest mixed with nutmeg, cinnamon, cardamom, and some other spices it seems, plus a rum note likely the same one used in Dormir (it smells largely the same and lacks the alcohol heat). Fruity, spicy, boozy with touches of caramel from the rum, without being the least bit thick and not at all sweet; it feels vivacious and fresh, as if it was masterfully blended by a professional baker. Hardly anything new, but very nicely put together. Then comes the heart, where things get quite interesting. There is a floral note playing loud and clear here, which the brand says is mimosa. I can believe that because there is something quite yellow floral, but that in itself is nondescript, rather it is the honeyed sweetness to the heart that is very familiar with mimosa. This is paired very nicely with dried tree fruits and an unctuous and savory quality (nuts, we're told) that altogether create a very well-rounded heart that is full of light and airy yellow pollen-like notes (florals), denser and happier notes in the middle (honeyed florals and fruits), and an oily umami quality (nuts) down below giving the preceding two layers a lovely richness. I had never heard of Roxanne Kirkpatrick up until now, but she has my attention; here is a perfumer that seems dedicated to composing cohesive heart and base layers that themselves are multi-layered and very comprehensive to the creative vision. The heart section of Teisenddu is one of the best I've smelled in a gourmand for a long time. The interesting and well-crafted turns don't stop there, with the final dry down revealing an animalic castoreum, woody, and molasses base that, I guess, is supposed to represent black tea, but smells of... sweet leather. Bizarre - but pleasant! It does actually get pretty close to a sweetened black tea. Though I can't say it's a photorealistic presentation, the contrast with the heart notes that came before have "calibrated" my nose to understand it as a sweetened black tea. Very interesting. I don't think I've ever encountered this presentation of "sweet leather" before, but, again just like the heart, it balances savory (animalics), sweet (sugar), and light airy notes (a gently woody facet) very well. Throughout the entirety of this perfume's life, each time I smell it on me, I smile; every moment I catch a cloud of it coming off of my skin is a joy, and each moment I revel at how unique and well done it is. At no point does it feel too close, cloying, dense, sweet, lumpen, or that any aspect of it is dead weight (like so many gourmands). Instead it always feels alive, energetic, happy and well cared for, like the smells and the energy you encounter walking into a Welsh kitchen to find a joyous baker singing to themself, thrilled to be making a teisen ddu for loved guests. I am completely sold on this perfume. I think this is another Frassai I'll be adding to my collection.

This perfume sent me into raptures. I’ll try and break down the notes to kick off my review but I just want to say that first off, I don’t know what a Welsh Black Cake/torta negra is and I’ve never had the privilege of stepping foot inside a Welsh tearoom and knowing what it smells like. Secondly, I don’t perceive this fragrance to be much of a gourmand despite the brown sugar and the brand’s synopsis of this particular offering. I can only try and explain what this little sample has done for me and how it smells to my nose. Singed molasses sugar meddled with ash from freshly burnt incense sticks—you can still feel warmth to the touch. It feels like a sweet, almost balsamic smelling ash rather than overly dry and dusty. The juniper lends a subtle and fresh aromatic feeling along with the bitter orange which if I try to explain the visual it conjures in my mind, it is not a blast of citrus, no—it’s almost like a bitter orange fog or gentle mist, the kind that becomes visible over jungle mountain peaks at sunrise—but it has an airy, refreshing quality to it which I think is because it meshes so beautifully with the aromatic juniper. The nutmeg and rum add warmth and comfort, just an ever so slight vanillic booziness. The leather soft, suede, buttery. It’s sweet, smoky, powdery, ashy in texture but not coarse, almost like the consistency of flour but also a bit boozy and vanillic and gently aromatic. This doesn’t deliver festive or “holidays” to me, although I do see where people get that—I think skin chemistry is interesting with this fragrance particularly, as it seems to pull more spice forward for some rum-soaked cake and dried fruits to others. On my skin it’s mostly sweet, spiced incense ash with burnt molasses still sticky and bubbling, a supple, soft leather and the smooth, aromatic juniper stays quite persistent in the scent bubble around me. I do wonder how it would play off in different temperatures. For me it is incredibly nostalgic as I used to burn incense sticks daily in my home (don’t anymore because of my babies), it reminds me of calm, it reminds me of a ritual I loved to do in order to be at one with myself and feel peace—to me this is deeply meditative and spiritual. I cannot stop smelling myself. It’s interesting to see what other reviewers are finding and feeling when wearing this fragrance—different to the brand’s interpretation of Teisenddu but I guess that’s the beauty of an art form such as perfume. Frassaï are doing something quite magical with naturals in their formulas. Quite breathtaking. EDIT: 24/08/23 Received my FB in the post yesterday. Delighted it is part of my collection.

I was immediately addicted to Teisenddu at first sniff. It’s the sweet ‘n spicy type of fragrance that I love, along the lines of Theorema or Ambre Narguile. Although I purchased a full bottle and have been wearing it for many days, I am still trying to figure it out because the pyramid just doesn’t match with what I am smelling. My first thoughts were a big, sweet brown sugar note quickly followed by the perfect blend of male and female, like a man who is wearing cologne and a woman who is wearing perfume spent the night together, and in the morning this blended scent is lingering on their bedsheets. Upon many more trials, I began to notice the scent of strawberry cream and pastries. It reminds me of Sweetie Aoud. I smell an entire patisserie filled with croissants and strawberry tarts. I catch whiffs of gingerbread in the heart after a couple of hours. About 6-7 hours later I notice sweet incense like creamy guaiacwood and opoponax. Personally I don’t get any leather, mimosa or juniper, but that’s fine. It’s a gorgeous perfume!! According to Frassaï’s website, the actual ingredients list is much longer than the notes list. This perfume is loaded with all kinds of essences—coriander, cinnamon, cloves, cocoa, ginger, guaiacwood, opoponax, tonka, beeswax, vetiver, patchouli, ylang ylang, lemon, davana...and more! I smell more of these things than the few notes listed in the pyramid. Truly beautiful and complex, this perfume! I’ll be wearing this constantly throughout fall. Update: Fall and winter are over, and it is now spring 2024. I’m reaching for Tiesanddu a lot. It’s not overly heavy/cloying as I find Ambre Narguile to be, and it’s also somehow comforting in the cool air. I can wear it in every season. I love to wear spices in summer and think this will work in hot weather too.

What a gorgeous fragrance! I have to laugh at myself as I recently bought the Frassai sample set and on reading the notes for each fragrance prior to receiving it had completely written off this frag as the only one I would not like. You see, I tend to really dislike gourmands that replicate the smell of cakes/desserts. I view these style of frags more as ‘house smells’ rather then ‘ me smells’. Lo and behold my sample set comes in and I immediately sniff Blondine and Verano Porteno ( the two I was most excited about) and although they are nice, I am not struck by either of them. I continue testing and begrudgingly sniff the final one—Teisenddu. Well, if my mind isn’t blown...it’s an instant love! My heart rate raises, I swoon, there’s fireworks, the whole shebang! What a stunner. The brightness of the bitter orange (especially in the opening), the sweetness of the brown sugar, and the bitterness of the juniper come together to create such a balanced, light as air smell that is never too sweet, or syrupy. The beautiful nutmeg is really apparent to my nose and the brown sugar adds the perfect dash of molasses that combined with the rum adds richness and depth. There is also this delicious bread/ cereal like note. Overall, I think it must be the juniper and mimosa that keep the fragrance smelling elegant to me, and something that I want to wear. Thank you Frassai for blowing my mind and giving me the cakey gourmand I never new I needed! I bought a full bottle the very next day.

This fragrance is incredibly interesting. My initial thoughts at first smell: this smells like Christmas trees and sweets! And I love it! Looking at the notes, that idea is pretty spot on. The juniper and the sugar seem to be what I pick up the most but with the addition of the rum and leather that gives Teisenddu a slight masculine edge. Though, I do think this is/can be very beautiful on a woman. I would love to wear this in winter, especially during the holidays. This fragrance brings this image to mind for me- a wealthy man, sipping a drink from a crystal tumbler by the fireplace during Christmas. Very festive and expensive smelling. This is a special kind of fragrance. Edit: Longevity is excellent. I slept in this fragrance and I can still smell strong hints of it on my wrist 13 hours later. Sillage, I sprayed this at night, so not many people around but it is at least arms length if not more.

Without reading the brand description it is hard for me to identify what notes I’m smelling, but I would say the orange peel, nutmeg, and tea stand out on my skin. In my opinion this is the most interesting and amazing from the line, though I think I love Blondine just as much and it’s more wearable. This is cozy, makes me think of winter holidays and spiced cookies. It’s so so so good. It’s a similar vibe to Gourmand Coquin on my skin but less chocolate sweet, and more photorealistic of a spice cookie with some woody and dry notes thrown in. GC reminds me of a pumpkin pie fudge. I honestly need bottles of both this and Blondine and I have a feeling this will be in the top 3 of my cozy fragrances. Edit 9/2021: I fell out of love with Blondine and now prefer this and the other white floral fragrances from the line.

This is a compelling fragrance. I love Blondine and VERY NEARLY bought this blind. Luckily I found a sample from Indigo Perfumery (lovely btw) I haven't ever sampled anything much like it. I will keep my sample and try it again when it cools off; but for now it's just too traditionally masculine-cologne-ish for me. The spices and the brine elements definitely have a "smoking jacket" feel. After around 6 hours it dries to probably the most realistic caramel I've ever smelled. That said as a gourmand lover/collector I would NOT call this a gourmand and primarily came to leave a review warning others to not go in with that expectation. It's very smooth and spicy. Very interesting and well done, but I don't think I would wear it enough to justify a FB. It would be marvelous on my SO if he would wear fragrance.

Of the Frassai discovery set, this feels like the outlier to me. Of course, they're all a little different, but feel unified by a certain white floral note. Not teisenddu. To my nose, this fragrance is rich, dark, spicy and sticky. In another life, it could be cloying, but the leather saves it. Typically i avoid gourmands, and I'm not a great appreciator of leather and rum either, but I love a fragrance that makes me re-think that. Other reviewers say it's overblended, but I find it fairly easy to pick out individual notes. not sure if it's unique enough to justify buying a full bottle, but we'll see how I feel when the sample runs out. I sampled it yesterday before work, and 23 hrs later, I can still smell traces of it on my skin.

Imagine you are deeply sipping a cup of strong black tea, then you take a bite of boozy spiced fruitcake! For some reason you are smelling juniper berries at the same time, must be a nice day to sit by the pines. Sounds strange, but it is beautiful. You can smell that this line uses a high quantity of natural materials, without smelling like a smokeshop hippie roll-on. Occasionally I crave this gourmand type of scent, but it is generally too strong for me,it is very strong. If you are looking for a good gourmand without vanilla, this could be it! There is leather listed, and I smell it and love it, but the gourmand quality is the most prominent thing here.

I tried this on my sweater and it was to die for, amazing performance. Sugary rum w a bread like nuance that just performs. I was blown away and needed a bottle. The next day I tried it on my skin and did not like it at all. It became sharp and cloying. I decided to only spray it on my clothes the following day. Again, gorgeous. This is one that does not work on my skin chemistry, a first for me. But I love it on my clothes sm, enough to consider a FB. Signature scent worthy. I’m wearing this in the heat and it’s a sweet bready rum that doesn’t turn heavy, so I can wear it in the Miami heat. Every season appropriate.

I received a sample of this with my bottle of Blondine from Frassai. I just want to write about my initial impressions of this. When I first spray this, I get a resemblance to an egg custard tart, with nutmeg sprinkled on top. The orange and sugar come through and make this really fresh smelling too. The orange is very realistic, it smells as though you have peeled an orange and some of it remains on your hands. It then becomes a spicy, orange with a sweet leather holding the fragrance together. Really nice, considering a full bottle of this...

Smells like gingerbread cookies in the air around you. But if I put my nose into my wrist I smell the tea, juniper and spiced rum. This smells like a pirates snack. Its delightful. Silage is huge and spicey leaving a trail. Go easy. Holy moly this stuff is gorgeous, it's definitely not a linear scent. The leather really pushes to the forefront in the heart. The juniper persists but it's not overwhelming. The amber seems to radiate as well, then in the base it all smoothed down to a sweet fresh sugared mimosa. Its heavenly.

Teissendu takes the cake for most versatile gourmand in my opinion (pun intended). It's a beautiful scent inspired by the Torta Negra or Welsh Black cake from Patagonia.Teisenddu has warm spices like cloves and cinnamon, as well as bitter orange, juniper, black tea, brown sugar crystals, rum and leather. So complex and well blended, with decent longevity and a variety of natural ingredients. I'm so happy my friend introduced this to me and gave me a bottle, which I now treasure.

Teisenddu is the perfect spicy, slightly gourmand fall scent. I say slightly gourmand as, even though the opening is quite sweet, boozy and fruit-cakey (think Christmas fruit cake), it dries down to a spicy unisex scent with delicate leathery notes. On my skin the nutmeg, the dried fruit and bitter orange peel come through quite strong (I wonder why dried fruit aren't listed in the notes section above?). Performance is great and sillage is moderate.

Oh my, this is gorgeous! Teisenddu is so comforting, like a hot tea and freshly baked gingerbread cookie on a cold winter’s day. I wouldn’t call this a foodie scent though. Every fragrance from Frassai is special and wearable, and this is no exception. I hope to add a full bottle of this to my collection someday soon.

Beautiful buttery, sweet and spicy! Smells like the holidays, but also a bit like a candle at times. I got asked by my flatmates if I was out drinking when I wore this one evening :D So I guess the rum must be quite appearent even in the dry down. But it's delicious and has great sillage and longevity!

spicy green on top, there’s a type of bready note but alas the boozy orange stars early but the gentle mimosa saves the party,, what a combo. its just good like a good thanksgiving or christmas party easey piece, remarkable easy leather, Im sure you’re staying for some cafecito?

Spices, booze, orange, juniper, sugar but NO vanilla so manages to be remarkably airy despite the hefty notes. Not at all cloying. A more interesting, higher quality alternative to Jo Malone's Ginger Biscuit. Perfectly unisex.

Burnt brown sugar with booze and spcice. Orange kicks in and this becomes borderline gourmand with the rum and sweetness. It never becomes too much of a gourmand. The leather and spice levels it out. Delicious

My Christmas Day scent. Absolutely gorgeous and amazing quality. Good sillage that isn’t overwhelming. Spices, with just enough sweetness and edge to not be gourmand, nor a candle.

Being of Welsh descent and having spent considerable time in Argentina, I can attest to this perfume's authenticity. Absolutely delightful. Highly recommended.

This is spicy, cozy and a bit boozy....I LOVE it! Blended to perfection. Longevity for 12 plus hours. This is a very classy fragrance.

I have an alcoholic and sweet start of orange and juniper that reminds me of Campari. It evolves loaded with nutmeg, cinnamon, spices and succulent burnt sugar which glazes in the dry and strengthens with time. All accompanied from the start by a persistent Farehnight-style leather and a hint of mimosa. I agree with the similarity of Micaelef's gajac especially in the attitude and sweetness. Teiseddu is found in the same frequencies but with more "weight". With a medium sillage, decidedly sweet and warm, it still manages to be quite comfortable if sprayed sparingly. Suitable for winter evenings. Caloric, feminine first and masculine afterwards, but still greasy from that masculine leather jacket and a little rubbery with nostalgic residues of man, hangovers and of... Farehnight!

Frassai, you got me with the sailors and tearooms and times gone by, and it turns out it's not just marketing. The opening is amazing, candied orange, nutmeg, juniper... It really is setting a scene with scent rather than just smelling good. But don't worry, it smells good too. It's a warm gourmand dream, a leathery, sugary scent. It's not sugary like sugar crystals, but more like caramel. It smells so edible it's almost too edible, and I feel I would almost hesitate to wear it often. I think it will attract attention for sure. It's undeniably pleasant. For gourmand lovers it's a total win. It's really transportive.

I was expecting to be blown away by this, and although it is an exquisite composition with notes that are right up my alley, I found it to be heavier on the leather than I was wanting. It absolutely presents as a sexy, aromatic and sweet fragrance, but the leather accord combined with the rum is overshadowing the rest of the notes on my skin. Not blind but safe but absolutely worth a sniff for a unique and wonderful olfactory experience.

Christmas in a bottle, or a red plaid clad rustic man chopping wood for the hearth while taking occasional sips of his whiskey, served neat. Rough around the edges, he wears a well-groomed beard and wafts with a warm, spicy cologne of woods and leather. The smell of the evergreen trees, green and moist with melting snow hangs heavily in the air. (Instantly thought of the Brawny mascot man or a lumberjack, when I tested this.)

Ostensibly gourmand but all sharp edges, and so thoroughly (overly?) blended that I feel like I'm losing my mind trying to pick out individual notes. I mainly get leather, I think, and bitter rummy fruits, boozy but astringent. Teisenddu would probably be perfect to wear while wandering through a snowy Christmas market somewhere in Europe, but otherwise I find it...unsettled.

- The opening is gourmand on my skin and it smells exactly like a black cake or a spiced christmas cake. But it also smells like a hot cup of black tea with chai spices which I'm a huge fan of. And it smells like FALL due to all the spices and coziness. In the final stage juniper and leather are prominent. Overall: It's beautiful.

Sweet. Spicy, Booze. Leather. Kind of macho. Sounds like a fun date. Haha. If I was still single, I would like to go out with a guy wearing this scent. Leans a little too masculine for my taste. And I agree with a reviewer below that mentioned it’s kind of a “blur” of a scent. After awhile it’s a little too much.

This just smells like a subtle, round incense scent. To me this is very boring and very, very forgettable. I tend to like scents that are unique and addictive, and this is neither of those things. If you want a light incense fragrance though you might really enjoy this one.

- I've tried all five perfumes of Frassai, this is the most interesting one. A muffled smoky hint, then an evergreen-peppery juniper , sizzles on an incredibly pleasant gourmand-y note -- it sort of smells like gingerbread , perhaps? You wouldn't believe a puckery, evergreen-y juniper goes so well with gingerbread. They dance around each other for quite a while, until a tar-like solid tone looms in, and soon it's replaced by a salty-peppery tone, adding extra flavor to delicious gingerbread. Now, this is a party on gingerbread ground: persistent juniper, salty-peppery spice, and sometimes flashes of nutty notes. Slowly, very slowly, all the notes blend together, and the grey fingers of an ashy-balsamic base crept upon them. I'd say the mixed notes turn to a sweeter caramelized, gourmand-y tone before completely fell to the ashy ground.

Bright spicy woody grain-like cream mimosa with hints of burnt sugar. An Argentinian fragrance house named their gourmand after an obscure fruit cake and magically Fragrantica is filled by connoisseurs of Welsh cuisine, Nathan86 below even pointing us towards the correct pronunciation, clearly the result of many culinary excursions in Wales. It kind of makes you wonder how gullible we are to marketing. Line up 5 dried fruit cakes from around the world and try to pick out Teisenddu from any other Pain d'épices like confection. Teisenddu is actually a solid attempt at making a palatable gourmand that doesn't try to knock out the room with a group migraine. It relies on a contrast between bright orangey spicy juniper bringing a high pitched clarity over a flour like powdery vanillic mimosa burnt caramel background. Nothing new or as remarkable as others claim below, creamy against bright and stimulating, attempting to paint the picture of breaking into the crumble of a cake. Where I feel somewhat estranged is in its inability to paint a clear picture, its neither a clear evocation of freshly baked goods, often unintentionally evoked in perfumery as with something plummy spicy like in Ambre Narguile nor does it commit to smelling grainy floury as in Bois Farine. As a result it mostly wear like a sweet vanillic mimosa on my skin, my mind almost forgetting it's marketed as a gourmand (which may actually be a pro). Frassai ultimately has among the best current line ups in the niche market. My recommendation would be to sample the whole set if possible. This one will probably satiate the mimosa enthusiasts more than the gourmand lovers.

I got emotional when I first tried this fragrance because I never smelled anything like it before. It's perfect for those who enjoy balanced, high-quality aromas, an elegant gourmand. The composition has a lot of cohesion and although I can recognize the declared notes, none are above the other, giving the final result a smell without another equal, definitely no one will remember another perfume when they smell this, because this is Teisenddu. It could be a signature fragrance without a doubt.

This morning I sprayed this under my clothes and then put Libre Etat D'Orange's Jasmin et Cigarette on my wrists. This one is sweet/spicy/boozy, that one is hay/floral/smokey. I love this type of gourmand. I can't stand the sugar vanilla baby scents. Anything candy or marshmallow or whatever is gross. This, however, smells like a kitchen during the holidays. It's like gingerbread and cocktail type of gourmand. Rum as a dessert. Yum.

Fascinating gourmand scent... it's a blast of fresh spices, then immediately moving into a warm, nutty, slightly citric cake aroma. Honestly it's delightful, I just don't gravitate towards this kind of fragrance personally. Comparisons to Lira are fair, but also this one reminds me of Masque Milano's Lost Alice too. There is a vague milky tea aspect to Teisenddu. Gourmand lovers.. try it! You might love it.

@Horizon77 I couldn't have said it any better myself. This is such a sophisticated, indulgent, and unapologetically FALL scent, yet it has restraint and overdoes absolutely nothing. I think it's the introverted counterpart to the younger, louder, party going Angel's Share (though they do not necessarily share a lot of notes, it's more a family). If you love that world of gourmands, this one is a sure bet!

Sweet boozy orange. Sugary sweet oranges with booze on the side. It's candied, bitter, & bit spicy. The colder the more leather as it turns into a soft leather blend. It has some similarities with "A Fuego Lento" but this is more sweet and with no balsamic notes. Very good.

This smells kinda similar to Guerlain Iris Degrassi to me. I own that one already, but Teisenddu has a little of this lactonic brown sugar smell that's making me nauseous for some reason. I don't know why that is because I love gormands! Too bad, I really like the bottle.

Absolutely delights and intrigues the senses! The alluring depth and inviting warmth of this fragrance are simply unparalleled. It's clear this was crafted by someone who has traveled the world and has learned how capture and create the impossible. Highly recommend!

This is overblended in the sense that I cannot make out the individual notes at all. It is not really sweet, I don't really get the sugar or the rum. Just a blur of fragrance. It also smells a bit dated.

It’s green, earthy and spicy. With the sweetness of the brown sugar. This truly smells Ike the holidays. I could bath my self if this all day. Urrrgh! So darn good.

Yeah there is this nice lil ashy incense underneath the brown sugar and orange that is quite nice. It's even better than Kerosene Broken Theories!

Hot bread, cereals, and gin. Nice, maybe more masculine.
