I was born in the wrong period. I should've been born in 50s, or perhaps the 60s, so that I could've thoroughly enjoyed the green perfume craze of the 1970s. I love green perfumes - whether it's galbanum, vetiver, grasses, herbs, etc. - I have a bias and a natural fondness for them. I would've worn No. 19 and Private Collection to death. I would've missed the launch of Vent Vert, but it would've been a lot easier to track down a bottle in great condition (and of a good formulation) much more so than it is today. But I wasn't born at a time to appreciate the perfumes in that period as new, and instead I was born of a time when I could appreciate Malle instead. Synthetic Jungle is not the first time Malle has harkened back to perfumes of yesteryear. Musc Ravageur of the brand's launch was an ode to Shalimar, more or less as an example, so when one of my favorite brands of the 21st century said that their new perfume drew from the 70s green classics of No. 19 - probably my favorite Chanel - and Private Collection it was all that I could do to not be overly gleeful in anticipation... and then I read the press blurb and became confused. Using words like "modern" and "old", "natural" and "synthetic", "hyper realistic" and "fantastical", the blurb juxtaposes descriptive antonyms so close to each other that you get the feeling that Malle is intentionally trying to confuse us, or perhaps ask us a question without ever really driving at one. When you smell Synthetic Jungle, this is certainly confirmed. If you thought No. 19 and Private Collection were tours de force in greenness, buckle-up and hold onto your hats. I was right to be confused by Malle's description because definitely upon the first 30 minutes to an hour of the perfume, and not to spoil the plot but throughout the remaining life of the perfume as well, the descriptors of "old", "natural", and "hyper realistic" do not apply. "Modern", "synthetic", and "fantastical" certainly do. We've all seen that sci-fi movie - take your pick of which one because there is a massive number of them - where we, the audience, are far in the future of human civilization where technology has exploded past its current state, we've explored the outer reaches of space, and for some reason or another "plants" have to be grown in these almost-comically scientific environments: the jungle of the far future is instead some massive greenhouse-type enclosure of glass or some other perfectly clear material, perfectly hygienic white structures holding it in place, the sounds and visuals of unfathomable technology whirling away to keep these plants at their most optimum state, the plants themselves are some mixture of the familiar and the extraterrestrial - so hyper-saturated in color (at least on our 4K televisions screens) that they look unnatural to an impossible degree. That is what Synthetic Jungle smells like. Whereas No. 19 and Private Collection could somewhat get away with calling themselves vaguely naturalistic in their hyper-greenness by presenting a palpable texture - call it powderiness if you will - Synthetic Jungle does not give its greenness a palpable texture. There is a shine and a gloss to it that is smoother than glass and equally impenetrable. According to Malle this is an effect of a synthetic material meant to smell of black currant. I can believe that because 1) there is a fruitiness to the galbanum that is not so much the taste or smell of fruit but the color of fruit; I can see the purple of the black currant, but I can't really taste or smell it - if that makes sense (probably not, sorry); it's like light is being bent through a glass prism to give you the purple spectrum wave. And 2) this slightly sour fruitiness has no naturalness to it at all, so I have no problem believing it is 100% synthetic. The lily, hyacinth, and jasmine heart presents more naturalistically thanks to having the textural effects that the galbanum top did not, but that line between natural and synthetic is incredibly blurry. One thing to be said though is that it is very pretty: stylishly and beautifully blended, and colorful. The moss and patchouli base is very quiet but keeps to the theme. It's a load of rubbish but for some reason the first thought to enter my head was the smell you get from a desktop PC tower after you've turned it off from hours of running; the moss and patchouli notes don't olfactorily smell like very warm metals and plastics, but there is a quiet heat and steam to the base that made me think of this for some reason. This is a very bold perfume in its vision and composition. It's meant to challenge. The highly polarized reception to it is a strong indicator of this fact. The green perfumes of the 70s were more emotional and heartfelt, intending to connect you with nature by bending your perception of it a bit. Synthetic Jungle is a sci-fi epic meant to distort your perception of nature to the point where you think you might be going insane. It took many wears for me to finally come to grips with it, and to have an understanding of what it was making me smell, think, and feel. You must give it time and plenty of attempts, and, even then, there is no guarantee you'll be won over. It certainly won me. (This review was posted from The Matrix.)

I've been looking for a fragrance like this for several years. My Mom was a florist in Greenwich CT, Nijole's Flowers. I used to pick Lilly of the valley for her as a kid, and it was always my favorite floral scent. It's pretty nice one in Synthetic Jungle, with a bit of green hyacinth as well. The greenes is coming mostly from the black currant leaves, called cassis, I believe. It is a green herbal, woody, animalic (cat pee) smell, that has facets of the black currant berries. It blends well with galbanum. So this is what Ms Flipo did, she added a touch of green vegital galbanum, and a hint of basil. This is most of your greeness, with a bright greenish floral, hyacinth. This makes me think of a masterpiece, Givenchy Insense: It was a lilly of the valley and back currant fragrance marketed for men. It was too ahead of it's time, as it was too floral for men. It came out in 1993, 2 years before Kurkdijian's Le Male, which finally broke through as a floral dominant men's fragrance. It is very green, and reminds me of Diptyque's, L'Obre dans L'eau; Synthetic Jungle is more floral. The lilly of the valley keeps it from getting too green. There is a tart freshness, especially in the open. Coming again, from the black currant leaves. You don't get much fruity smell from the black currant. On reading about Synthetic Jungle on the FM site: This fragrance was composed as an ode to green fragrances of the 70's, like Chanel #19. The Parfumer used synthetic black current, cassis leaves, and another aroma chemical, to shine the natural bouquet of florals through a modern prism. Thus the name, an imaginary "Synthetic Jungle" of greens and light florals. I think it comes off as very natural. So don't worry about this being some crazy synthetic mess. The best, natural green fragrance I have found in my fragrance journey, is "Honeysuckle" by Creed. Honeysuckle is in French. It's a vaulted, discontinued Creed. But it's the best, Spring and Summer, totally natural, non-fragrance fragrance. Synthetic Jungle does a good job at something similar. This is worth a try, or even a blind buy. Nothing offensive here... There may be something synthetic in it, a good synthetic, blended with mostly natural essences. It makes it a bit modern. I purchased FM Rose and Cuir recently. It is very similar, but much softer, and more natural smelling. The green here in Synthetic Jungle is like watery tulip stems. More cassis in Rose and Cuir, but not too much, as in L'Ombre Dan's L'Eau. PS: I agree with Kristo and Eugene on YouTube, that Frederic Malle is the new Guerlain. Guerlain is making more fragrances with cheeper aroma chemicals. Not all their fragrances, some still great. But FM is making consistent, original high quality fragrances, as Guerlain did in it's hay day. Projection and longevity is well above average. Rating: 8/10 God bless. John 3:16

All manicured wilderness, Synthetic Jungle is immediately lush but never evocative of overgrowth. One of its main notes is hyacinth, an oily, multi-coloured, more-than-green but essentially a verdant scent. It is indeed floral in character, proportionally huge and blooming; the utter concentrated essence of springtime. This jungle is not aggressive, but serene and refreshingly still, padded with atmospheric noise, followed with an entire array of greens. To my nose, muguet rapidly becomes the central note. Its serene angelic breath is a green drowned in an excess of white light, and this shadowless purity provides the background in which the crunchy, peppery, and anisic snap of basil is juxtaposed with the sizzling bitterness of sappy galbanum. Synthetic Jungle is a fantasy of ideal jungle greens. The fantasy itself is achieved with the ‘synthetic’ qualifier, itself a promise of abstraction – a movement away from determinate natural reference points – the creation of a utopic jungle that is immediately known but cannot be located in real space or mimetic memory (it is a jungle we all know of, but have never known properly). Synthetic Jungle has the benefit of soft spokenness, of confident and crisp laconicism, at times smelling as if it has invented a new shade of green through techniques of careful composition and arrangement. Synthetic Jungle is unexpectedly urbane and moderne. Where many green fragrances either plunge into the depths of dark greens, or embrace the certain free spiritedness of lightness (in all of its senses), Synthetic Jungle capably offers the wearer both in excellent balance. There is the gorgeously airy, slightly salty aqueous breeze of florals, and there too is the grounding base of patchouli and moss. Imagine the shiver of arboreal petals and green grass as an exalting wind rushes through, picking up the scent of the forest on its voyage. A mighty fine example of how a green ought to be, especially when, in a depraved market, it seems that all perfumed forms have been exhausted – and the crucial element missing is a spark of inspiration. Creativity is infinite, but only under the appropriate conditions. Full review on my blog: olfactics.net

I had to run some work related errands today, so to the annoyance of everyone within five feet of me, I wore Fathom V by BeauFort London on my left wrist and Synthetic Jungle by Frédéric Malle on my right wrist. With Fathom V, the experience is raw and unsettling from the very beginning. On my pale Celtic complexion skin, the opening is sharp and almost overwhelming. It's a clash of bracing herbs, juniper, salt, and a moist soil accord that immediately conjures the image of decaying Easter lilies sinking into water on Antipascha Sunday. As it develops, there’s a strange tension between the delicate florals and the darker pull of moss, vetiver, and incense. The saltiness persists, binding the fragrance to an aquatic space that I would not describe as refreshing. It feels more like standing on a weathered dock in north Maine surrounded by brackish water and moist wood. Synthetic Jungle, by contrast, strikes me as a controlled and polished vision of greenness. Where Fathom V is chaotic and elemental, Synthetic Jungle feels sculpted and almost purposely architectural. The opening is crisp, dominated by a hyper-green lily-of-the-valley and Hyacinth [Bouquet not Bucket god rest her soul today], sharpened by basil fawlty [please someone wrap him in bubble wrap]. Its structure is clearer, the florals arranged in a way that brightens rather than suffocates. As it moves into the heart, the green continues, but the weight lightens and the patchouli planted in soft moist earth serves only to anchor the composition, never dragging it down. One leans toward chaos and moist earth while the other toward order and botanical brightness. In choosing between them I feel I am really choosing between confrontation and refinement. So why are these two my favourites after 27 years of collecting hundreds of bottles? That’s a beautiful question and one that cuts deep into how fragrance works emotionally, physically, and symbolically. There’s a melancholic beauty, like remembering a place I’ve never actually been, or I place I've been many times. When I catch a whiff radiating up my shirt from these two, I feel both soothed and unsettled, which is a balance I secretly crave.

EXCELENTE COMPRA.

Humid foliage, gargantuan monstera leaves, Victoria amazonica, ferns that reach the heavens, and intensely fragrant pearly white flowers: this is what I envision with Synthetic Jungle. It's an alternate dimension where muguet grow gigantic bells that you could crawl into, they droop over and drop condensation that splashes on your head and you start feeling indistinguishable from the botany enveloping you. Bluebells carpet the forest floor, a distant flute is heard, much like that which is heard in Edgar Froese's "Epsilon in Malaysian Pale." I can almost taste it all, especially the black currant, I feel its tartness in the back of my throat, making my mouth water. Boxwood hedges form a maze, with peculiar climbing vines weaving in and out, with showy pitchers that upon closer inspection, look to be carnivorous, insects entranced by their honeydew, blissfully drowning in ecstasy. Crunchy wet umbellifers crushed and dirty, a mosaic of feathery, parsley-like leaves of varying shades of green, a garden gone feral. It begs the question of natural vs synthetic and how it's all a matter of perception and experience. Does our insatiable need to identify what we smell rely primarily on a posteriori epistemology or are there other parts in motion? This fragrance feels like those "other parts" in motion. The real and the imaginary are not so easily delineated when beholding the alchemy of scent. Synthetic Jungle escorts the nose into a space of beauty and puzzlement where the idea of naturalism is rendered supernatural.

Upon first spray this smells to me like standing on a pile of crushed up new leaves— which may not speak to some but I was (somewhat unexpectedly) immediately attracted. I’m fairly new to the fragrances world and until now, only drawn to the idea of green scents but not really the reality, even though I enjoy the concept and have wanted to be favorably impressed... possibly because I often detect some synthetic elements which to me feels more like a vague interpretation of the idea of green than green in itself. SJ has an intense but natural green smell, extremely enlivening and refreshing. And when I say intense: this may not sound like an endorsement but anyone in danger of fainting could probably be roused with a few sniffs of SJ. Anyway, I have found I’m also not usually a huge lover of white floral fragrances because they tend to be - I’m not sure how to describe this - too sharp and powerful and “perfume-y” in the upper register which seems to cause me headaches or muscle aches. But although the florals in this are quite prominent they feel quite natural and don’t disturb me in that way. My impression also was that this fragrance feels quite novel, potent, and perhaps not easily accepted, and for those reasons at first I was shy about wearing it out and about at first because I thought others might be disturbed by its unconventional aura and strength. However, recently I’ve been getting over that and have been wearing it every day, to positive reviews! Definitely my favorite fragrance at the moment!

I absolutely adore this fragrance! One of its primary notes is galbanum, which is a fascinating and one of my favorite ingredients. Galbanum has a strong green, bitter, and woody scent with balsamic undertones, reminiscent of a forest. It also has a spicy quality that pairs well with floral and herbal notes. Other notable fragrances with galbanum include French Lover and Royal Oud from Creed - both of which are masterpieces in my opinion. In addition to galbanum, this fragrance has basil and black currant, which provide a fresh, vegetal, bitter opening. Basil is a common ingredient in Mediterranean cuisine and adds an intriguing element to the scent. The top three notes blend beautifully and complement each other perfectly. The top notes sit on a floral middle note, giving the fragrance an aromatic floral chypre character. The use of almond is also interesting, as it blends well with the bitter galbanum and the floral note, particularly hyacinth. All of the floral notes are spring flowers, making this fragrance a perfect choice for the season. Both longevity and sillage are excellent. To me, this is a perfect fragrance, from high-quality materials, originality, and technical skill. If you're a fan of green, bitter, aromatic fragrances, this one is a must-try. I've tried many fragrances in this category, but this one is my favourite. 10/10

Synthetic Jungle... what a strange name for a perfume. This is hands down my favorite green scent. It reminds me of No. 19, but on steroids and definitely less mass-appealing. The scent profile of Synthetic Jungle is an overload of galbanum, lily-of-the-valley and hyacinth that literally punch you into the face if you spray too close to your nose. Despite the notes, to me it doesn’t smell fruity (black currant) or indolic (jasmine) and I don’t really detect any patchouli either. Particularly the opening is so strong, that I am not surprised many people are offended by this fragrance after sampling it. I did not like it the first time either, but I fell in love after a couple of times trying it, especially after comparing it to other fragrances with dominant green notes. Performance is stellar, both in terms of longevity and projection. If you overspray this, people will hate you. In this case less is perhaps more. Right now Synthetic Jungle is the greenest of the green perfumes on the market. The scent is divisive and polarizing, not for everyone. Given the price tag and general appeal, definitely do not blind buy. If you find this is too much for you but are still looking for something green for the spring and summer, I suggest you check out Chanel’s Bel Respiro, which smells a bit more floral and mass-appealing.

I just discovered this brand last year. After reading the story from the start, I really wanted to get the ever first bottle from FM. I was lucky that the authorized distributor of FM is available in my city. They let me try every single FM perfume they had. Yes, of course, I tried highly hyped ones at first, but I admitted I could find the same tastes in my current collection. After several free samples, I was tired of, but the seller offered the last one to me. She said "It's very new", and I tried it on paper, later applied on me for 30 minutes, and finally got 100ml full bottle. It is Synthetic Jungle. You may wonder why I decided it. Firstly, this kind of smell, and how it developed cannot be compared to any perfumes I have. This is also the first ever green chypre bottle. Opening with green of leaves on tree, my mind steps into the calm jungle. Then, white flower comes as a wind. Fruity smells goes into the dance. I love that it is not sweet, not mass appealing, not heavy. In jungle, smells come with wind, you just catch them sometimes, but not all the time. In busy city, this kind of perfume uplifts my mind. I wonder why "Synthetic"?. Of course, in city, it is not real, but just to open the mind. Perfect. Not sure why people compare perfumes to natural smells. They are not comparable. Just enjoy!

I guess you love this or hate this, according to these reviews. I, for one, love it. To me, Synthetic Jungle is a bright, fresh, snappy green right out of the bottle. The galbanum shines and is used well in this application, supported by whiffs of basil here and there. The scent simmers down into crushed green leaves and hyacinth/LotV very quickly, with the green softly surrounding the very prominent florals. The ylang ylang makes the white florals relatively... pendulous, but the note itself isn't as pushy as it usually is, and it and I are both happy for it to be a supporting act here. I think the florals are done well and smell pretty photorealistic to my nose. This fragrance settles well into a nice green floral. Clean and fresh, with a somewhat aldehydic finish. I agree it's less "jungle" and more "garden run amok", but I don't find myself minding all too much. I rated this fragrance as a "more feminine", but a man could wear this if he wanted to pull it off. Great performance, especially for something so green, but it's the florals that pull it across at least the hour 3 mark. Wish it was a little more green forward, but lovely, nonetheless. 9/10.

The greenest scent, with no rough edges. It's not a gourmand, but there's a delicious juiciness to it which, alongside the minuscule touch of almond, makes it mouthwatering. As with many FM perfumes, this is a love letter to a specific style of vintage perfumery, but also smells ultra-modern. However, unlike many modern niche perfumes, it has no discernable synthetic elements, apart from the name of course. Speaking of which, perfect name. It's a nod to the fact that, of course, it's made of many synthetic ingredients, but perfectly evokes a real scene of lush, verdant flora. While I'm irritated by this brand's multiple renamings of their perfumes, I also think Synthetic Nature is a good name for this perfume (I hate the renaming of Bois d'Orage, a perfect name for that perfume and a nod to its inspiration, replaced by the extremely cringe-inducing French Lover... fetch me a bucket). There's no comparison to Fathom V, as that one is totally heavy-handed, unwearable and overwhelming, this one is perfectly balanced and wearable.

Ah my quest for a Green scent, and I mean Green front to back, left to right, crosswise and top to bottom, is over. My little tester for Synthetic Jungle arrived last week and thank you, it was the ticket to the type of garden party that makes me very happy indeed. A full bottle is on the way (2021). People if you're willing to spend time in a biosphere full of giant stems, some basil and green peppers in neat little pots, patches of lily-of-the-valley, moist grass underfoot and a lot of weird and carefully cultivated plants dripping their green juices everywhere, come hither. Just don't expect any relief from musks, woods or unruly flowers. It's Green through and through. Don't be afraid though, this geodesic jungle will envelop but not bite and swallow you. Ultimately, it's well behaved. You'll find a lush mocktail bar and good conversation and if you want, there's a polite bit of cannabis growing in the back. And when you leave, you'll have a glow. Green of course.

12+ hours and I still get wafts off this as I’m moving around. It’s smooth and potent starting off with a blast that calms down after 30 minutes. It’s not unpleasant during that time, it’s just a lot! On skin and clothes the Hyacinth shines through with that crisp juicy green floral that I’ve been craving ever since I discovered Chanel Cristalle EDT has been discontinued (the EDP for a while now). I wasn’t sure what was giving the facet of autumn leaves that weaves in and out at times, maybe the almond plus ylang ylang? It’s almost like a faint amber. What ever that tiny nuance is makes this feel like it could be a year round scent for me. You know how a fragrance wows you and you really can’t imagine wearing anything else? That’s this. Which is a surprise as I enjoy many genres of fragrances and Greens have always seemed a little linear in comparison to gourmands or resinous woods etc. The word synthetic has nothing to do with how this smells. It’s beautiful.

I was on a seaside holiday when I fell in love with this perfume! It is very hyper realistic, wafts of jasmine and tropical greenery! It will forever remind me of my holiday! Uplifting, verdant, lush. Be lost in the thickets of a temperate forest ( not fully tropical jungle) and make your way down to where you can see the sea. It's a pure hedione and synthetic galbanum bomb but genius needs no complications. There is also a slight sugary sweetness, like you could list sugar cubes or cane sugar as one of the fainter notes. Jasmine comes alive at night, this is great for a casual balmy night. This ticks all the boxes for me in terms of greenies and I think I just love a good basil note. Other greenies I love are Sisley Eau de Campagne, Weinerblut Klubwasser and Memo Irish Leather. Edit: bought a full bottle of this, couldn't resist!. It does not smell of cat pee to me, only a negligible amount in the middle notes if you go looking for it.

The opening of Synthetic Jungle is an extremely realistic, pungent, yet fresh green, and as others have said, smells close to a raw bell pepper. After an hour or two, the greenness fades slightly to make space for floral notes, which combine to create an herby artisanal soap scent. I think the name is very fitting - if the perfumer's vision was to reimagine the smell of an indoor rainforest, she has succeeded entirely. This is what I would expect to smell walking through the rainforest greenhouse of Kew Gardens, surrounded by exotic foliage and white flowers. This is the first Frederic Malle release I have properly explored, and I am very happy with the performance and quality, though it is definitely not blind buy safe. I have high hopes for the brand's other offerings. Smell: 8/10 Performance:8.5/10 Presentation: 6/10 Value: 4/10 Overall: 8/10

Green perfumes are something I'm experimenting with just recently, so I haven't smelt many green frags yet, but this one made me think about a whole bottle. The name is absolutely suitable for the perfume. The opening smells like green grass, wet soil, and broken tomato branches. It reminds me of the summer I picked tomatoes from my friend's backyard. As it develops, it becomes slightly more floral to my nose, but I can still smell the green branches in the background. It has a character of its own and is pretty calming, IMO. It's also relatively long-lasting. I picked up the t-shirt I was wearing yesterday, and I could still clearly smell the perfume on it. I would suggest anyone thinking about buying one get a sample first because it might not be everyone's cup of tea. smell:9/10 Mass appeal: 6/10 Longevity: 9/10 Masculinity: 6/10

What a delightful modern perfume! Sharp, prickly, almost poisonous greenery, and tart flowers. Usually such flowers are inconspicuous, grow in the fields of childhood, and only biologists know their names. But that's not all. Forest shield bugs are hiding in the thickets. Perhaps these are large and exotic forest shield bugs. One of them got scared and shit itself, fertilizing the air with its juice. The secretions of the forest bug contain complex aldehydes, acids - oh, this is quite perfumery and makes the synthetic thickets so authentic! Put this on, and you will definitely stand out from the crowd. But this is not what interests me in perfume. Green thickets with tart flowers, damp forest litter and various small stinky creatures are so beneficial for the mind! Even sometimes I feel like ditching vintage perfumes for this one.

Easy becomed my favorite green fragrance. Don't get me wrong, but this beautines is not easy to understand. I have spend it about 5ml before i get a full impresion. It is realy growns on me since first testing, actually i completely changed my oppinion from dirty ashtray to something most beautiful. Synthetic Junge is synthetic only by the name, smells highly naturalistic, heavenly pleasant and and luxury. It's all about creamy green flowers in a same vein as Bel Respiro and Fathom V which they r both smells a bit more synthetic than this jungle. Performances is presented incredibly good on my skin, especially during summer months when the body begin to warms up more than usual. Maybe will sounds funny but,the more i sweat-more sillage i get.

Not a review but the quote from the back of the box: “With Synethetic Jungle, Anne Flipo authors a richly evocative green, vegetal and flowery perfume. Encompassing and abundant, Synthetic Jungle is a caress that touches the heart, an invitation to allow yourself to be tenderly invaded by a lush green nature endowed with the capacity to blend, to merge with the skin. The composition of Synthetic Jungle reflects this desire to idealize nature via a contemporary composition, carefully combining natural ingredients and synthetic molecules. From this masterful alchemy there emerges a perfume both effervescent and mysterious, that evokes a welcoming jungle, at once bright and cool yet also secretive, dark and impenetrable.”
