Muskara Pogostemon

I splurged & bought this on a recent trip to Tokyo (never have I ever spent so much on a fragrance before, let alone mere 30mls of it...) and it just may be my platonic ideal patchouli. This is Borneo 1834 minus the sweeter cocoa aspects that muddied that composition for me. This is the smell of the highest quality aged patchouli oil you can imagine, rounded out with a gentle musk. This is THE patchouli scent for me-- pure, unadulterated, unsweetened, un-vanilla'd, un-gooey-sticky amber'd, earthy to the nth degree, capital P patchouli. It is so incredibly smooth & plush, no jagged edges or sharp camphorousness in sight, but still undeniably, singularly patchouli; this isn't a gussied up, buttoned up "classy" (hate that word) patchouli where the perfumer neuters the note of all its earthy dirt-like qualities and slathers it in herbs and aromatics and florals to make it appealing to the masses. It's entirely unisex, and neither clean nor dirty in the way that high quality patchouli is. The one downside is performance-- genuinely want to meet the person who rated this as "enormous" sillage. I've drenched myself in this and had trouble smelling anything a mere 30 mins later, and asked my travel partners if they could smell it and they couldn't. At this price point ($300+ USD for 30ml), even with how incredible it smells, performance needs to be substantially better to warrant repeat purchase.

This patchouli is very close to the Santa Maria Novella Patchouli old formulation (red brown juice), it have this kind of vintage/historic feeling, its slightly powdery and velvety, no damp, no earth, classic clean masculine cologne profile of patchouli. Probably prefer more earthy and mossy profile of patchouli, but this one is really elegant.
