Xocoatl

Xocoatl is a fragrance described as floral, in the official catalog of the brand, which in my opinion has a floral-gourmand aspect. This review will address the Parfum version, which is the one I own, whose result is fabulous on my skin. Although unisex, I consider it more masculine than feminine. Still, I believe that on the female skin may present another facet. Composed by notes of orchid and vanilla, in the output; cocoa, in the heart and rum at the base, this fragrance was created to remind a beverage made by the Aztecs to the warriors and nobles, called Xocoatl. Yet, according to the history of American civilization, the cocoa trees were cultivated by the Maya and later, by other people (among them the Aztecs), and the word chocolate is derived from the word "xocolatl", original of the Nahuatl language, which is an Aztec dialect, that means bitter water. Returning to what matters, the scent hits the skin intensively, slightly fruity and alcoholic in the first moments. Almost immediately, the bitter cocoa takes over and, on several occasions, this nuance in conjunction with the rum gives the idea of something raspier, which let me thinking in leather. About the vanilla, forget the creamy aspect. Here, we have a slightly bitter aspect, although rich and with quality. In addition to exotic, Xocoatl is delicious and exudes, consistently, for more than four hours. This made me receive various compliments and see people around commenting on the fragrance they feel in the air (after two hours, I went to dinner at a restaurant and had a table full of people celebrating a birthday next to me, and I could see two men and one woman talking about the fragrance). The lasting surpassed ten hours on my skin and the first impression couldn't have been better. Xocoatl is a great scent, from a brand that has ecological consciousness and a nice story as background.

Fueguia have created quite a special fragrance here. Upon reading the 3 main notes listed on the brand's website (Vanilla Flower - Cacao Flower - Rhum), you would assume the fragrance would be an overly sweet, cloying gourmand scent. However, this does not at all describe Xocoatl. Xocoatl opens up with slightly spicy and damp nuances that feel light and heavy at the same time. This is most likely thanks to the rum which is generally distilled with cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves etc.. Then, the scent brings in a soft floral and subtly sweet vanilla to work alongside the now less prominent rum. Later, a dark bitter cacao appears, and whilst it does not give off a typical "chocolate" profile, it's presence keeps everything grounded and warm for the remainder of the wearing. Overall, Xocoatl is well rounded and no particular notes stand alone here. Everything is working in unison and creating a unique experience. Who? - I think this is unisex, perhaps leaning a little masculine. When/where? - Autumn and winter. Cozy fragrance for yourself and your special someone to enjoy when relaxing in the cooler seasons. This reminds me of? - I get some similarities with Costume National's Homme and Maison Martin Margiela's Jazz Club.

HAVE I SERIOUSLY NOT REVIEWED THIS YET?!?!?! I first tried this out in Skins, Amsterdam -- the one in the Nine Streets -- and it totally blew me away. This was in August of 2016 -- I remember it vividly, because I was so enamoured by it. Fast forward 12 months, and I had decided to get it purchased, and I got it sent to the AirBNB that we were staying at, in Jamsa in Finland. I remember picking THAT up, along with the key to our chalet / mokki (I can't do the umlauts!), and it was quite the experience -- purchased from HK, sent from Milan to Finland, as at that time they only shipped intro-Europe (the official website had all the sizes, Skins only had 100 mls). What can I say? The perfect vanillic boozy floral scent -- it's hard to put into words, it's one of the most ACCURATE booze scents I've even come across -- it literally smells like a drunk person's pours pushing out consumed alcohol smell! It's hard to phrase, but, it's such a beautiful summery scent and it is just a pleasure to sniff. I love it! I later got another bottle 'just in case' and so I'm set for life. I love this one!

I have decided to re-evaluate my previous lukewarm review of "Xocoatl". Jovoy Paris supplied me with a nice full 3ml sample, which has given me a much clearer picture of the scent since my last encounter with a troublesome plastic sprayer, from which I could only extract tiny dribbles of the stuff. It's actually lovely; Much smoother than I'd previously thought. The cacao is also more perceptible; Not bitter or dark, but soft warm and lush. The vanilla has a fruity nuance which is accented by the sugary rum. There are hints of a subtle, floral powderiness, but quite indistinct. It's not cloying at all, at least not compared to the likes of "Un Bois Vanille". Rather, it feels quite sheer and satin-like in texture, with a delicate trail. It's true that it doesn't really evoke the traditional Mayan cocoa drink; You would expect that to be spicier, darker and milkier, and that is what originally let me down when I smelled it first. Still, it's a damn good vanilla scent that's fairly unisex and is sure to make heads tilt as you walk past.

I'd been curious about this for years and finally took the plunge. I rarely blind buy because I almost always regret it, but this one is a winner! It has a somewhat spicy quality on my skin. Some say rum can be spicy, so could this be the reason? Cacao is there but in the background, it never dominates. I think it's amazing, smooth and slightly intoxicating, without any harshness. An impeccable, tasteful scent. Although Xocoatl does not demand attention, a co-worker said she could smell me throughtout the day, so that would be a good 6 hours of longevity. I think I've found a combination of notes that work for me, rum, cacao and vanilla also feature in Les Indemodables Vanille Havane that I love. I bought the 30ml but I can already see myself buying the 100ml once my bottle runs low.

I still think this is one of the sexiest fragrances I have ever smelled. I don't really know what else to say. Definitely worth the price. It's around $450 for 100ml. There is a clean quality to the notes themselves. It is similar in Michelin star restaurants. The flavor is pronounced and then all of a sudden it falls out of your flavor pallet. A very clean taste. That is what is happening here in regards to smell. It is very pronounced, and then all of a sudden the particular note fades away. It's extremely difficult to do but very rewarding. Yes it is vanilla and chocolate. But not in a dessert style. There is also fresh spice like pink pepper that provides a body to the fragrance. You can almost smell but orchid in the vanilla pod. It is a potion I absolutely love it.

First blind buy purchase from the house of Fueguia 1833. I didn't know what to expect. The accords look appealing so I thought, "Why not"? My first impression was the nice packaging of the homespun wood chest with roping around the casing....As for the fragrance, this starts out very sweet, however the whiskey is the scene stealer here. Prepare yourself for a DUI(Delivers Uber Intensity) while sniffing. Xocoatl smells exactly like Swiss Miss hot chocolate being spiked by Gosling's Black Seal Rum. Never mind the 4 notes, this smells like premium imported cocoa. I get about 6hrs out of this. Spend those 6hrs with a woman you're trying to win over; she won't regret it. A scent for all Clark Kents looking for their inner Superman.

Xocoatl is a love for me. In my opinion it is one of the best Fueguia fragrances. I get very distinct cacao and rum with some vanilla. It definitely has a Fueguia DNA to it. To me it smells expensive and luxurious. It has enough sweetness, but not in an obviously edible way (I don’t know how to explain it). I have smelled lots of fragrances, but Xocoatl is very unique and I can’t think of anything that would smell similar to it. Although it has some gourmand sweetness, Xocoatl is not very dense so it can be worn all year round in my opinion. A reviewer Sacrafice described it perfectly “it feels light and heavy at the same time.” A scent worthy of becoming a signature.

This scent smells of a warm pepper as a top note for me, then settles to a comforting warm peppery note with some cocoa behind it. It's my go to perfume for my winter night shifts as it evokes happiness and comfort in me. It combines well with Greedy chocolate if you need a boost of the sweet but this perfume is sexier than it's cheaper cousin. No artificial top note as in greedy chocolate and somehow richer. Liked a good spicy stick vs a cheap fast food version. Poor sillage so only no smell it at work which I good for office environments but I get a whiff throughout the day over 4 hours.

This scent lingers. It's sweet, yet fresh and modern. Not green-fresh, but I wouldn't call it warm, maybe at the very end of the drydown. Beauuuutiful, will be saving money to get a large bottle. Smells nothing like Anima Dulcis. At all. A strange side effect from this application is that it amplifies all the other scents around me. If it's a bad odor - it's twice as bad! Very annoying...

I get boozy rum, cacao, pralines and cream. Smells like a sinful dessert, enjoyed in a dark room by candlelight. My hubby loves this on me. A winter and nighttime scent. Wore this in the summer during a heat wave and that was a bit much, but for a night out in a cocktail dress, ooooh yes. So much yes

Superb mix of cocoa and rum in a sensual and elegant blend. Not overwhelming, and has the right level of sweetness. The high quality of the materials can be noticed immediately. Recommended to those who like elegant, sweet perfumes, but not sugary ones that are common among commercial brands.

Tender dessert with slightly bitter rich dark chocolate and a bit of orange zest. The base is musky, woody and a quiet boozy. Such a beautiful complex scent that shows a lot of different facets from the its very opening. Follow me on IG: scent.guide

Reminds me of Spiritueuse Double Vanille but not as sweet and with an added cacao note. I love it and will be purchasing a bottle

Holy shit, the sexiest scent on this planet

This is definitely a love for me. The very best chocolate scent I've come across yet. I wore my sample to bed and had the most delicious sleep ever. I usually don't like the dab samples, spray ones seem to work perfume magic easier for me, but this one has such a powerful sillage with just a couple of dabs and lasted over eight hours. It starts off rather dry and acrid but develops over the next half hour into a beautifully warm cozy scent ( I think the rum note is responsible for the coziness in this). The chocolate note is not overly sweet thankfully, this is definitely an Oriental and not a Gourmand. The combination of chocolate and vanilla mixed with the powdery aspect of vanilla orchids and the warmth of the rum note, makes this as snug as a downy quilt on a rainy afternoon. Nobody will feel like having you for dessert but they will very likely want to hug you for the whole day. This goes onto my want list, it was a definite plan formed in my happy dreams last night! :)

Xocoatl has been on my ''to-try-list'' for a while since I heard that is a great boozy gourmand, so I had to try it. For me, Xocoatl opens up with a strong rum note followed by very sweet cocoa and vanilla. The rum dissipates quickly, and you're mostly left with the cocoa (could be with the addition of praline) and some milky note to smooth it out. It kind of reminds me of Feve Delicieuse, in the characteristic of the scent rather than being a copy or anything. It is enjoyable, but a bit too sweet for me, and feminine. I suggest trying this in the winter for those who love a strong performing scent. The longevity is 10+ hours with strong to moderate projection.

A lovely simple natural gourmand scent which is supposed to evoke an Aztec drink made with cacao pods. The perfume opens with notes of vanilla bean and the vanilla orchid and then proceeds to a heart of cacao pods before settling into a boozy base of rum and musk. The unisex scent has moderate to strong sillage and good longevity. Gourmand and vanilla lovers may find this natural scent very appealing. Enjoy!

I got this on my NYC TRIP with my girlfriend. Now when I smell it, I remember that trip. It is very warm, sweet and spicy. You definitely get that rum. It smells like a dinner for two at a restaurant with the lights too low to read the menu (in a good way).

Disappointing but not that bad. I thought I'd love Xocoatl based on the notes but it doesn't really smell like how the notes suggest, I expected this to be a boozy chocolate and vanilla scent, but in reality I don't get anything remotely chocolatey or cacao-like here at all. I do get a slight rum fruitiness and a floral touch, but this is mostly vanilla to me. This isn't a boozy fragrance, instead of the usual alcoholic rum from other fragrances Xocoatl only has the rum's fruitiness. Strangely Xocoatl's pervasive sweetness really reminds me of Toskovat's fragrances. I have all my Toskovat samples in their own box and, given how strong they are, their combined smell has a sweet facet that smells similar to Xocoatl's, I wonder what raw material, if any, is shared between this and Toskovat's sweeter fragrances. My biggest gripe with Xocoatl, however, is how synthetic it is. This isn't intolerably synthetic like Spiritica's fragrances, for example, but it is very noticeably synthetic in an Argos Danaë/Triumph of Bacchus kind of way to my nose, and it's especially disappointing considering that, from what little I know about Fueguia as a brand, a big component of Fueguia's marketing is the high quality materials that they use, not to mention their fragrances' elevated prices. $395 for 100 ml and $237 for 30 ml is laughably high for a fragrance this synthetic and that doesn't even smell like its literal name (chocolate). Fueguia isn't a brand I was interested in trying outside of Xocoatl and frankly, given this experience, I have no desire to try anything else from them in the future. I'm glad I only got a small sample (purchased from ZGO Perfumery) instead of the 5 ml travel spray.

There is no cacao pod, even on official site it is listed as cacao flower. Floral, kinda sour. Smells unique, and grew on me a little bit

First of all, I love Fueguia 1833's comittment to sustainability and was really hoping to be able to make them my go-to for my winter scent. So when I came across this scent at their NYC store, I took a gamble. Because I normally do well with boozy chocolate notes, and because I wasn't going to be returning to the area for a while, I took the leap and purchased a 30 ml bottle (i do wish there were sample sizes). I am sad to say that at this time, it's been quite the disappointment. I get no chocolate and no booze. It just smells like a very loud, generic department store scent. It has quite a bit of staying power and sillage... which isn't so great when it smells as it does. As an experiment I sprayed this on a garment and the dry down was much the same as I was experiencing on myself.

I found it to be one the 2 best smelling gourmands at the Fueguia store in Buenos Aires, so I have got it sprayed generously on my wrist and wore it for the rest of the day. For the price($306 - 100ml) and in concentration - perfume I have expected it to be magical and very, very long lasting. Neither was the case. The scent - quite generic and uninspiring, lasting for some 3-4 hours.

I don't get chocolate from this much at all. It opens up dry and peppery with a vaguely vanilla hint, a bit like baked desert earth with the scent of gravel ghost flowers wafting up, and then it dries down into a sweet fruity rum with a peppery bite, (I was surprised to not see either pink pepper or fig listed as a note, tbh)

I finally tried Xocoatl and I must say.. I HATED it! To me, it smelled of urine and old lady perfume. Yuck! I know everyone's sniffer is different, but this really made me wanna gag. It's perplexing to me because of the high reviews, maybe I sampled a bad one.

I am not sure I get any of the notes listed, which is fine. It’s somewhat sweet. To me, it leans masculine and I prefer very feminine perfume.

This smells so much like john varvatos to me and I didn't smell any cocoa unfortunately. Just rum and vanilla and woody notes.

I absolutely love this house, but this particular fragrance smells like paint thinner to me. I might like it if I smelled it on someone else, but on me it's a pass.

Wow- my experience of this seems to be totally different to everyone else’s. I don’t find this to be warm hot chocolate at all. This to me mostly about strong, dry booze with some aromatic herbal note that I can’t place. There is also a prominent amber which leans masculine and the cacao adds a smoothness or fine polish to the composition. To me there is absolutely nothing reminiscent of the Mexican hot chocolate (I am Mexican so I am familiar with it), but nevertheless this is an interesting perfume. It has a very close sillage and is not really very complex- it does not have lots of notes and does not evolve much either. If you want an interesting and savoury take on ambery booze, then might interest you. If you are looking for hot chocolate, try before you buy. What is very interesting about the perfume is the packaging, recyclable, wooden box, beautiful parchment map and no plastic at all. Well done Fuegia. Edit: I blended this with Tihota and it works really well. The dry aromatic notes are smoothed off, and Tihota’s slightly cloying stickiness becomes unnoticeable. What is left is a beautifully balanced, boozy cacao vanilla which is not too sweet. It lasted most of the day too. Yum!

Oooh, sexy deep vanilla! I tend to love vanilla in all its forms from girly-girl light and fluffy to dark and sexy. This is the latter. It has depth, spice, and a sultry glow. It all flows together beautifully and I can't pinpoint cocoa or rum in particular, just a strong backbone for the vanilla. It isn't the sort of fragrance that is extremely dessert-y. That being said, it smells very, very similar to Guerlain's Spiriteuse Double Vanille. Very. I like this one a bit more, it is a little more sophisticated IMO, but they are very alike. And so I don't know if I can justify a full bottle. The vanilla gets a bit sweeter and softer on dry-down. It has good lasting power and sillage. (My perfume-hating cat loves it, oddly. He keeps sniffing from across the room, gradually pinpointing my wrist as what he is fascinating on, and asking to sniff me some more, then forgetting we just did that and repeating all over again. Hilarious!)

Cacao is probably my all time favourite note in perfumery so I was superexcited to try Xocoatl. It is a very unique interpretation of cacao. Dry, spicy and has a certain kind of "raw" feeling to it. I have never had a chance to try that Aztec/Mexican beverage that inspired this fragrance, but I often buy unprocessed raw cacao beans and Xocoatl smells just like those slightly crushed little nibs out of the packet, underlined with some dry vanilla and spice to balance out the bitter earthiness and it becomes more and more spicy as it develops. It is certainly not a sugary sweet gourmand scent. I find it very elegant and unisex. Would I buy it? Considering the sky high pricetag on this fragrance and the fact that longevity is medium on me and the sillage is quite low, I`m not sure I would put it on my wishlist, but I would encourage all chocolate lovers to try this scent, you really are in for a unique treat.

Boozy vanilla in chocolate haze! You can't define cacao quite clearly in here other than vanilla mingles with chocolate and rum. It is quite boozy and in pressive, but i don't remember that's what i have smelled few years back! I remember i did reviewed this fragrance 2 to 3 years back but i just don't know where my review have gone to! a user sent me a message regarding my review for this fragrance few months back and i still don't know where it is! all i remember is that i have bashed it a bit harsh somehow, but now i believe it was a mistake, it is quite an interesting fragrance since i developed a love relationship to gourmand. A bit on the wait side, i get now (10 minutes in) fizzy boozy chocolate vanilla blend, weird and impressive.

This smells like cocoa + cedar + vanilla.... very earthy scent, and i wouldnt say its too gourmand or sickly sweet at all actually. ... And it leans towards more masculine, in my mind... I imagine sitting by a cozy fireplace in winter, and having some cozy book reading moment with your loved one, while somewhere in the same room cocoa beans and cedarwood are stored in a jar and these scents are mixed somehow. Perfect for winter, and autumn, but id say you could pull this one off in spring and summer also! 7.5/10

This started off smelling really amazing and then became nuclear. The rum note is just one of the very familiar synthetic designer compounds and it’s embarrassing for a brand that throws around the word "natural" so much. Both me and my girlfriend tried to wash it off multiple times to no avail, and are still chocking on the synthetic dry down 6 hours later. PS Fragrantica, WT actual F is going on with the obtrusive ads? I had to fight 25 stealth pops that bypass the filters while writing this

Like many have said before me, this is very boozy. And it not only opens up boozy, it stays boozy throughout. In the opening, there is a sharp alcoholic note, that turns into a creamy but nevertheless alcoholic rum note that lasts until the end. Warm, vanillic, boozy and a bit woody, kind of like the whole concoction is sitting aging in an oak barrel.

This perfume smells like a fall Yankee candle. I honestly don’t smell any chocolate. It reminds me of an antique store smell, but without the woodiness. This is not a gourmand, at all. There's a peculiar sour note that I can't identify-but it stops me from loving this fragrance. However, I respect Fueguia's commitment to all natural ingredients.

I don’t get cocoa, more of a sweet rum. I also get something tobacco-ish and some orange or citrus. Reminds me of a tropical drink but leans a bit masculine due to whatever I’m getting that reminds me of a cigar.

The booziness of this reminds me of Jazz Club, but this is sweeter and almost jammy. I don't think I myself could wear this, but, like Jazz Club, I bet this smells AMAZING on the right guy.

Powdery vanilla-cocoa with some orchid, spice and rum notes. Love cocoa based fragrances but not a fan of this mix. It smells very synthetic, bland and bitter-sour for my nose.

I don't get chocolate or cacao. I get Rum amber and something floral that represents orchid. Very deep and boozy, brownie-like. It reminds me something else...

Agree with reviewer below. Son brought me samples from their Tokyo shop and I was disappointed after testing this one. Generic sums it up.

If you are looking for booziness and cocoa then go for Guerlain Coquin. Right amount of Rum blended with cocoa.
