Fragrance Review For Soir De Grasse By Galimard Top Notes Violet Green Leaves Middle Notes Jasmine Orange Rose Carnation Base Notes Lilac Oak Moss A good friend of mine from France had this in her mother's home which was a country estate with horses in the South of France. This is a beautiful old fashioned floral fragrance. It's hardcore French perfumery. I can't think of anyone in my circle of friends that would wear this, except my older girlfriends who are from the UK. There is a "mature" association with such a heavily floral and mossy fragrance, but it smells lush, luxurious, sweet but strong, absolutely gorgeous. The bottle is pure glass and looks like something from another era. It evokes glamour, ballrooms, ladies fanning themselves, gossip, secret admirers, bouquets of violets and not roses (purple flowers were given to young women to seduce them), duels, handkerchiefs, and books as presents with hidden meanings. This fragrance reads like a romance novel, like a Jane Austen book or a book by Stendhal - Armance. It also feels likes something Empress Josephine Bonaparte would have worn. So very very French. Let's start from the beginning. The top notes remind me of Quelques Fleurs by Houbigant. There's a green floral scent as it begins. There's leaves and shrubs, violet leaves and that instantly recognizable smell of a floral shop when you walk in there surrounded by greenery. The violet scent is very strong. It's a purple flower that dominates the fragrance. But she is not alone. Lilacs are also there. So for me, a purple flower lover, this is heaven. The violets and lilacs are delectable and dreamy. It evokes an Impressionist painting with a gauzy haze effect, and you see a field of purple flowers - lavender, lilacs, violets and heliotrope. Beautiful. The heart is floral with additional flowers of rose carnation and jasmine but they are taking a backseat to the violets. The citrus and rose accords are a good match. Smells just the slightest bit rosy and citrusy, enough to give it a pleasant air, and something similar to orange blossom which I love. The carnation is probably the weakest scent but it's also throwing out some scent, particularly the greenery of carnations. So if you love floral fragrances this is all about those flowers. As the fragrance dries down you get plenty of oak moss. It becomes a chypre with a little bit of wood and moss. The green color and scent of leaves is not gone yet and the violet is still lingering. A beautiful outdoor garden smell. Smells like a chateau garden in Grasse, the South of France, and the birth place of modern French perfumery. To this date Grasse is the go-to place for good French perfume. I learned so much from my own visit to Grasse as a student, learning how to create and develop fragrances. This is a good lesson in fragrance itself. This is a gorgeous violet and green floral fragrance. It even smells vintage as I said it smells like Quelques Fleurs. But it's not as flowery as Quelques Fleurs. Still, it has great longevity and sillage. I smile every time I come across it at my friend's home. She says it reminds her of her mother. Very hard to find but you might check out niche fragrance sites or ebay.
