Behold, Patchouli

The latest release from the Maryland-based Gallagher Fragrances is Behold, Patchouli, a standout mix of patchouli and chocolate, principally, that really makes quite the impression upon first spray. It’s very dark, dense, and rich, really an explosion of chocolate and patchouli with slightly subtle vibes of orange and spices underneath. It’s mostly sweet but slightly dirty and earthy in the way that patchouli often is, and it feels like a good compromise for patchouli lovers and chocolate lovers alike. It walks the tightrope between being playful/experimental/artistic and being serious and for special occasions. I think this could be pulled off by anyone who wants to be a bit audacious, especially in colder weather, and favors something opulent. Still, for all its daringness, Behold, Patchouli feels reasonably balanced. Though it leans toward the chocolate, it’s not overwhelmingly sweet and the patchouli feels appropriately proportionate. More patchouli would make it too dirty and not sweet enough, and more chocolate would make it too close to a full gourmand. Overall, this is an impressive creation that warrants trying. It’s great to see releases like this that push boundaries and it’s the perfect time of year (in the northern hemisphere) for a dark concoction like this. Bravo to Daniel Gallagher for this fun perfume. Currently priced at $185 for 100ml, Behold, Patchouli is priced on the higher end of the line, but given the ingredients and performance, this makes sense to me, and the pricing is reasonable, again under that $2/ml line I cite as quite great for niche/independent companies. 8 out of 10

A lovely evolving scent anchored by a gorgeous light Indian patchouli. The multiplicity of notes is skilfuly blended: it opens brightly; citrus notes twirl gracefully ceding to mid-tone notes of chocolate, frankincense, amber, and tonka without tilting into "too sweet". The cream soda is unusual note, and triggered flashbulb sense memory of drinking it lukewarm at Girl Scout camp-outs. The many quality notes in this are so well blended entertaining you until it settles down to the longest finale of sandalwood and musk settle down with the last of patchouli. This one was important -- it overcame my total avoidance of patchouli. When I was a kid, my Sis split hippy patchouli oil down heating vent system, all winter when the heat kicked on...phew, when I read patchouli as a note of a perfume, I'd avoid it like a plague . NOW I know I can try all those scents I'd written off! My thanks to Daniel Gallagher for making the scent good enough on the paper strip, I was willing to take a chance; and to Dave at American Perfumer for sending me a free sample with a recent purchase. Without both of them, I'd still be avoiding a really wonderful note.

Oh my goodness. I got these little samples from Daniel and I started my day today with just one spritz of this. It opened with beautiful slightly sweet citrus, honey and of course patchouli. I won’t wear this every day cause it’s a little overwhelming to me but listen. Hope it will make you understand the power of his simple yet complex and beautifully composed fragrances. Six hours later me and my little daughter went down for a nap and fell asleep in each other’s arms in this soft, warm cloud of patchouli, amber, honey and chocolate. It has never been so sweet and full of love and feeling of closeness. She said I smell great and if she doesn’t like something she wouldn’t lie. Try at least a sample, it is definitely worth trying. 8 hours plus longevity on cold skin - fantastic. Sillage is medium - I can smell it in the car but not very much around me. Beautiful perfume creation thanks Daniel.

I have to admit, that's a pretty original way to approach patchouli. It opens up sweet, ambery warm, undoubtedly patchouli with cream, orange, chocolate, and leather. This smells like a creamy orange and touch of mint filling bar of chocolate with a bit of leather, while still hitting the gourmand territory. A very surprising, and out of the box way. This is a 8-10 hours lasting strong to moderate in the dry down unisex approach to making patchouli gourmand in a very different way with some creamy, woody, leathery back. Absolute unisex, will be grate for autumn days and cozy evenings. I love it, to be honest with you.

Rich and underrated chocolate patchouli. Daniel Gallagher searched for high quality patch and blended it to create an exceptional fragrance of the utmost richness and quality. The depth of the patchouli is ideal for a colder day where the fragrance warms you up, hopefully you are wearing warm cashmere and the natural chocolate patch smell is enhanced by more chocolate and orange. A Little nutty smell that is very comforting and unisex, not too sweet and not too earthy, just right and worthy to behold. 4.25/5

This fragrance has several very different phases and that gives it a very fun dynamism to me. The start is tremendous, very gourmand, it is a dessert of orange compote with a high quality dark chocolate. After a while this part leaves and the protagonist enters, a very good patchouli, a vanilla, tonka bean without becoming a gourmand and to finish a part remains amber, with wood. Completely a Terry’s orange chocolate you get in your Christmas stocking, in the classiest and most opulent way possible! I love it so much I had to buy myself a full bottle. And their bottles are hefty, and beautiful. Gourmand and chocolate lovers need only apply, don’t get this if you are on the fence about chocolate scents. And this is such a realistic chocolate in the opening, then it turns a little powdery. So good.

Behold, Patchouli is so fitting for this amazing patchouli, orange, chocolate, tonka fragrance. The composition is so smooth, warm, and inviting. On my skin, the blend has a subtle powdery feel to it, that I really enjoyed. You can smell the quality here and patchouli is the star. Performance is amazing and I could still faintly smell it after 12 hours. Beautiful frag and definitely full bottle worthy. 9/10 ❤😍

All the other notes in the pyramid are there to support the patchouli. To make it brighter, to add spiciness, to tone down the barnyard smell. It's a glorious patchouli-forward scent that is incredibly well-blended, and clean with woody and spicy nuances. While patchouli dominates there's a beautiful complexity happening in the background throughout its life. Unisex with excellent sillage and longevity.

Damn, this is goooood! I’m a pure sang patchouli lover, and this is a gorgeous chocolate-patchouli-labdanum. It’s not like Angel, more like a very high end YR Neonatura Cocoon with added labdanum. Very well rounded en high-end smelling. Worth it’s price. Longevity and sillage are great. Will be getting this, but first I'll get a sample of Jovoy's Psychedelique to compare these 2!

This is what I imagine fall in late 1960's chicago smelled like. a few reviews have mentioned it smells kind of hippy, which I agree with. It smells like an earthy, amber-y incense smell. I don't get as much orange as I was expecting, but that's fine. Very unique. projects well, and lasts a long time.

This fragrance is amazing! After a few hours I love it even more! Hard to describe what the scent changes into after a few hours, it’s so addicting, the patchouli fades and the chocolate and citrus and amber come together so beautifully. Smells like orange chocolate!

This brings back nostalgic vibes that I had with a certain teavana tea in raw form. I absolutely adore this fragrance. Completely get the hype. 10/10. Beautiful ❤️

This is patchouli, orange, chocolate powder, tonka and faint sandlawood. This is kinda harsh. The powderyness of the chocolate strikes the senses.

I love it! More resinous and dark ambery-buttery than gormand. Something animalic give depth; something sweet seductive funk richness.

Oh my! Love at first sniff, a nice earthy/chocolate/citrus combo. This has became my new fav!

Patchouli can be a challenging note. It is used in so many varied ways. Some I love, some I detest. In Behold Patchouli, it is a little of both. It smells like a beautiful, well made fragrance that I just don't want to wear myself. It is a bit of a complex fragrance that changes throughout the wear. I love parts of it, but am not a fan of others. Patchouli lovers though, really need to give this one a sample. The opening is very gourmand. It bursts out of the sprayer as a bright chocolate orange. I can smell the whole orange. It both the sweet, juicy flesh of the orange and the tart, bitter rind. I love the contrast of all the facets of a seemingly simple note. The chocolate morphs into and earthy patchouli fairly quickly. Before the end of the first hour, the chocolate mostly gone, though every so often there is just a hint of it in the sillage. I notice the orange taming the patchouli until the deep dry down, where it finally fades away. Thre patchouli is earthy and rich and also a little dry and powdery. Not the syrupy patchouli found in a lot of fruitchoulis. Although it's earthy, I don't find it all that dirty. It leans more freshly tilled earth than forest floor with decaying plant matter. Without the note list I wouldn't have been able to name the other notes, but their effect is noticeable. There is a rich sweetness from the resins and when worn lightly, an airiness from the aldehydes. Behold Patchouli smells like a colder weather fragrance to me, especially suitable for a crisp fall day. It's pretty unisex. I see it as easily wearable for men or women...as long as they are pachouli fans. The performance is stellar, it easily lasts 12+ hours on skin with a pretty strong projection. You might not be smelled across a room, but very likely will be noticed from across a table. With Behold Patchouli less is best.Overspraying does the fragrance a disservice. Not only is it unneccessary, it robs the fragrance of all the beautiful nuances it has when applied with a light hand. The first time I wore it I sprayed a bit too heavy, 5 or 6 sprays. After the opening the patchouli overpowered everthing and I found it heavy and obnoxious. It was a bit one note and boring as well. The second time I tried it, I was much lighter with the application, 2 sprays. It was like a completely different fragrance. This time there was balance and there was room for the other notes to bloom. The orange was present, giving the earthy patchouli a bit of contrast and interest. This one is a little hard to rate as like or dislike. It's not a fragrance I want to wear, but I can recognize it's beauty. The patchouli just reminds me of Prada Amber, which I really don't like. I do find it's much better here and I like the balance and contrast of Behold Patchouli so much more. Gallagher Fragrances are a pretty good value niche/indie house. The prices are pretty accessible for very good quality fragrances. I bought the sample set not long ago and am working my way through testing them. So far, even the ones I haven't liked have come down to personal preference rather than composition or quality.

I`m going through all discovery set from Gallagher. Read all articles (how this perfume won an award) and all the comments down here. Pretty polarizing: some love it finding a unique blend that connects with something in your past that make it special and some others no less that detest it. You know, when you know that main notes are chocolate and orange then you kind of try to locate those two nice smelling ingredients and you tend to maybe prefer the perfume better. But if you just smell it up front (without knowing some glowing reviews and the award it won) the truth is - this smells like a dirty barn, it`s just the truth. I do understand how some may find that "rustic romantic" but for the most of us it will not be something we`d like to smell like. In general, I found most Gallagher perfumes more challenging than most niche perfumes. Sometimes it feels the juxtaposition of ingredients is just there for the sheer shock factor but not for actual wearability. I have grown to love the Rose All Dae but it did take some time to get over the shock reaction first (which basically was - you smell like you`re a bit drunk). Edit: my best friend came over yesterday when I was wearing this, hugged me and said I smell amazing and so unique. Go figure. That inspired to keep wearing this scent and see if, like with Rose All Dae, I just need to give more time to fall in love with this too.

Since it's the award winner and what put their name on the map, I was expecting a bit more... For such a grandiose name, I thought the patchouli would take my breath away, but it just caresses—It's a very refined & understated fragrance that didn't take any particular facet (like chocolate) to the next level (don't trust the votes), leaving me wanting more; however, this brand has a lot of high quality & expertly blended fragrances (I was shocked at how "niche" they smelled as opposed to "indie"), to which I highly recommend their Gourmand Lover Sample Set!

Bamb! Pungent Patchouli at the opening, then chocolate, something sweet and spicy (sandalwood and ?). Hard for me to say that the sweetness is related to oranges . Thank God the patchouli fades. I Can pick up the neroli and cream soda too. This is a fun and very interesting fragrance that develops into something very enjoyable after a strong and a little barnyard-ish opening. Complex and well blended are good descriptions. Not sure if I want a full bottle. I will have to reconsider in the fall. This is definitely a fall/winter fragrance.

This came as a bonus sample when I ordered samples of Rose All Dae, Wicked Good, and Midnight Jasmine from the Pearlescent line. I don't even like patchouli and would never have ordered this one myself, but it's so well-blended here, and it's more of a supporting player than the star. BP smells like a woody Terry's Chocolate Orange with just a touch of something almost minty. Not sure if that's the patchouli, because it usually smells dirty to me, rather than fresh. I wouldn't mind smelling this on my husband.

This is a like and not a love for me. The opening is stunningly beautiful with a smell similar to Lindt chocolate orange candies mixed with the root beer accord provided with the frankincense. It is a high unlike no other. Several minutes later, the patchouli takes stage as well as frankincense resulting in a pleasant, but boring drydown. Its a nice one, but not sure for 180 dollars.

Orange flavour dark chocolate, sour, bitter, followed by a ton of patchouli and frankincense. It feels thick, viscous, like melted chocolate flowing on your skin and slowly condensing. There is a tiny bit of leathery smell which reminds me of those rubber kitchen gloves. A unique patchouli scent overall and worth trying.

Behold, Patchouli by Gallagher Fragrances is essentially the ultimate patchouli-chocolate fragrance. A heavy dose of tonka and orange, but the dark chocolate components of the patchouli essential oil rides this fragrance from start to finish and it lasts for 12-24 hours. Brilliantly balanced and absolutely beautiful.

In no particular order, patchouli, chocolate, orange. This is not a blind purchase type of fragrance. My this reminds me if folder is empty. This smells nothing like soldier field 7/9/1995 I can tell you that much. I lied after this settles down I am getting 54 vibes.

I m NOT a patchouli fan and had to force myself to sample this, and only did because I respect the perfumer. And I am pleasantly surprised. Leads off with a delicious chocolate then resinous and a tad fruity aspects. Never does it veer off into hippy territory.

Rum cake and cream soda. Chocolate shake with a maraschino cherry 🍒 on top. Cherry liquor 🍸 on a bed of damp patchouli and citrus fruits. The opening is awesome. It tones down from there but never get less than good.

I usually never smell anything on myself by the end of the day, but this is as loud in the evening as it was in the morning, absolutely insane longevity for me

I got Rose All Dae FB, BB, and am loving it. I also got a bunch of samples of their other scents and the new Pearlescent lines. Behold Patchouli is nice, very much a chocolate orange and then some sweetness comes in. This is a nice scent, but it is not something I love. All of the samples I got have one thing in common (except Rose Noir), and that is I very much feel like they are coming from a house that is new and still learning. Rose All Dae and Rose Noir are blended well, familiar and still unique and warm. The rest are unbalanced, a bit sharp in places, and aren't quite coming together for me. Gallagher has a lot of potential, the foundation is there, but the house is still under construction. In the coming years I hope they refine some of these scents because they are almost really interesting,but are not quite making the cut for me.

I wanted to love this sooo bad, it has all my favourite notes. The first 15 minutes were challenging but promising... kept convincing myself itll get better..... Sadly it turned sour on me , the chocolate is gone, the tonka mixed with the citruses and patchouli smells like you are in a public mens toilet at train station or airport, where an older mature gentleman just washed his hands with the cheap soap they have and freshened up with a barbershop fragrance or something like Brut. Please dont slander me everyone... i really wanted it to be THE winter fragrance for me...

This fragrance had a strong patchouli opening, quickly followed by an orange-twinged chocolate. There is also something here that brings a sweetness in a syrupy kind of way, like honey. As all of this settles and combines, it creates a scent that is exactly reminiscent of waht I'd imagine a Coca Cola^TM fragrance would be. It is quite interesting with a "dirty" green undertone that emerges at the end of a whiff. Overall it is a very unique scent, though the syrupy styled sweetness isn't something I would wear.

This sample came with Wicked Good, which is a favorite. Behold Patchouli didn’t speak to me. Maybe it is the strong patch, which has an almost incense like quality to it? At any rate, my favorite fragrances and music initially elicit challenging & meh responses, so I will give this more of a shot and update. My favorite fragrance community reviewer on YT, Beauty Meow, gave such a lovely and thoughtful review, I feel like it deserves at least three more tries.

I should like this a lot from the notes, but the way everything combines with my skin I just find this...off putting. When I can pick out the individual notes of the chocolate, orange, and the rest it's nice but as a whole it just doesn't work for me.

Strong chocolate orange in the opening with heavy citrus notes. Once it dries down, it becomes ambery with noticeable animalic undertone (those citrusy ambers that smell a little like pee...). Also, quite powdery.

If you like Terry's chocolate oranges you will love this. But you have to put up with a lot of greasy animalic skank. I'm neither a super sweet gourmand lover nor a raunchy animalic lover and take away either of the two aspects and I don't like this anymore, and unfortunately it becomes all BO patchouli in its drydown. This is something that works because of how interesting it is. It brings a playful femininity to something that would otherwise smell like a bus shelter, frankly. Also -- spray lightly, this stuff is nuclear.

Nasty stuff. Smells like a chocolate orange. If you work hard at it you can find a dull patchouli note under the dusty chocolate. Maybe some cola elements too. I wanted to be fair to it, so I didn’t follow my immediate impulse to scrub it off, and it does get a little better as it rolls along, but never turns into anything great, or even good enough to justify putting up with that opening. They should have just called it chocolate orange, and I wouldn’t have bothered reviewing it, or even smelling it....

Unfortunately, on my skin, this ends up smelling like a very VERY musty and old log cabin that has been abandoned, it’s decrepit and dirty. There’s an underlying smell of piss (animal or human) and decay. It’s surprising how a smell can take people to Heaven or to Hell. Sadly, for me, I went straight to hell with this one 😅 From this house, I really liked Wicked Good and the ridiculously named (but amazing smelling) Rosé All Daé. I definitely see a full bottle of RAD in my future 🔮

Oh nooooo, I really wanted to like this, but it's one of the most repellent fragrances I've tried recently. It smells like wood cleaner at an antique store or something. I think the patchouli is likely to get blamed, but I think it's that orange just clashing with the rest. The whole thing is rough, abrasive, and powerful. If I smelled this on someone, I would think they'd been recently deep-cleaning a bathroom with some sort of citrus-based cleaner. Addendum: I ended up scrubbing it off. After soap and water, it was more tolerable but still smelled like cleaning solution. Still isn't gone after following up with rubbing alcohol, so I guess A+ for performance.

I was excited to try this one, however it turned out to be absolutely horrid on my skin! In a park next to where i live there is a public pavillon where the same smell of stale p*ss lingers in the air since decades. It's nearly a 100% replication of that, which really impressed me in a way, however it was not at all the olfactif experience i thought of :(

Like reviews below me have stated- this smells like heavy incense and citrus cleaner. It’s repulsive actually. Every single person I had smell it had a horrified look on their face and were offended that I would even ask them to smell it. Definitely a scrubber for me.

I love patchouli but this is horrendous.

So my sample arrived yesterday, I was so excited, opened it up, sprayed and oh boy! I was smitten. The first two dominant impressions are good quality, bitter, dark chocolate and cold orange. I paused here for a while as I couldn't name the 'substance'. I was smelling my wrist, thinking it TASTES like.... dark chocolate with orange flavour, but noooo... hot dark chocolate with orange, but also no, as it's not hot. And then I figured it out: It smells like when you taste a good quality dark chocolate and orange cake, something fancy and vegan, with chocolate sauce and a slice of candied orange, or kumquat, or satsuma... Then the perfume settles and becomes less gourmandy, and less edible but more fragrancy... for the lack of a better word. As described by the creator himself, Behold Patchouli explores the many facets of patchouli. Somewhere in the middle, it starts to warm up, that's where I feel amber, sandalwood and tonka. And all the time behind all that, in the background, like the base of a song, is patchouli. The nice, herbacious, but not viscius or medicinal patchouli. Like if only the most pleasing extract of patchouli was added. I love it about this scent. For me, it ends up, and stays this way for hours, on a FEELING of wearing a warm, chocolaty, orangey, smooth and cosy cashmere cardigan. And it's this multisensory experience of smell, taste and feel that I really, and truly enjoy. It may be worth mentioning that Behold Patchouli has a very distinct 'denominator' that I find in Daniel's creations. I picked on it immediately as it's unmistakable, especially if someone is familiar with Rose all Dae. If I was testing this without knowing who composed it, I wouldn't hesitate with my guess. I'm ordering a full bottle tomorrow - it will be a perfect scent for autumn in London. On a side note, Daniel is such a nice guy, I asked about the 'common denominator' via insta and he replied listing notes that were used in both: BP and RaD. I can only recommend trying it, especially for patchouli lovers. Samples from the US arrived in the UK in three days! :-)

~ hand test/first impression/global wearing Initial sprays kicks you in the face with burst of delicious chocolate filled with juicy oranges, which stays with you for several minutes. Dries down slowly to chocolate with less prominent oranges but because using of different styles (blood, bitter, clementine) - they smell complex. Overall complexity is a word that suits Behold, Patchouli very well, because despite dominant dark chocolate and oranges I can easily detect used labdanum which together with patchouli can be responsible for some dusty, darker, almost leathery facet, but also sweet, creamy tonka bean and vanillic benzoin. I'm surprised it doesn't get more love, as in my opinion it stands as very well composed, almost gourmoundy take on patchouli, surely worth trying out. //Edit: In global wearing I noticed amber is much more pronounced than I thought at first - in fact it's chocolatey amber accord surrounded with sweet oranges, olibanum and hint of patchouli. I'm wearing it in the office and it cames out in the air amber accord is absolutely dominating and notes are blended in the way it smells very masculine. I will go even further and say it's lighter, chocolately, orange and more wearable version of Le Lion by Chanel.

I have a big ole bottle of this one & it’s some good stuff! But if unless you want to end up with about 300 fragrances I can say that The initial spray is the best part...It ends up basically Frederic Malle Musc Raveguer right off the nose once it’s dried down in its last stages. That’s not a jab, Musc Raveguer is just one that I already own & the big bottle of this wasn’t cheap! The notes are on the front of the older bottle I have & I realized today I haven’t reached for it much because the 1740 Marquois De Sade By Histoires is superior & way sexier & simply was reached for so much more over the last couple of years along with Profumum Patchouly along with Jovoy psycodelique which is superior to this one! & fragrances I’ll repeat buy again! Like I said, It’s good I own a big bottle of the stuff, But it cost more even on a Black Friday sale, Than superior fragrances being mentioned above...Therefore saying what has been said..You’ve been told!!...Im just keeping it real! This is good, But the others...To die for

There are other notes in this but they are smothered by patchouli which is actually the point of this fragrance. A deep rich thick chocolate patchouli in a church burning frankincense (olibanum). It’s a very loud, powerful, dramatic patchouli fragrance, but it’s not too much somehow. But I happen to enjoy a bold fragrance so keep that in mind. It does bear a resemblance to Wicked Good which uses the same chocolate. I get none of the citrus on my skin. There is some sandalwood adding a smooth woody base. I’m not a patchouli lover so this just isn’t me. But I also am drawn to it because I can really feel the quality in this. I can see how it could become addictive. This reminds me a little bit of Coromandel Chanel. Both are rich powdery patchouli fragrances with lots of depth and drama. Update: The more I smell this the more amazing I find it. Chocolate and patchouli in beast mode. It’s spicy, creamy, powdery and deep. It’s powerful in a very good way.

One off the best patchouli you will ever smell, read the reviews saying it smelld like orange cacao.. its not wrong but what i get is a burst off the highest quality patchouli Ive ever smellt..it smells like orange cest and dark honey but the orange is not the important part here, its the blend.. dark blood orange and olibanum...the tonka adds slight creamyness and just elivates this, im not that happy about sandalwood...but here..sweet Lord this works well, i cant praise this parfum enough, its upp there with the greats like pardon..psycadellic..horizon But this stands on topp.. jammy thick patchouli and dark citrus marmelade... Honey aspects like in bengal rouge and the cacao from Horizon... Iff you even remotely like patch you need to try this

This stuff is super strong- absolute beast mode. Everytime you wear this it will leave lasting memories so best used for special occasions. I love the chocolate orange opening. Gallagher really knows how to make a good chocolate perfume i just wish they'd lower the prices. Then it goes into an animalic almost oud-like drydown that ruins the fragrance for me. Dont get me wrong I enjoy wearing this but for the price I would personally never buy this. I'd like better if it were just that orange chocolate smell. Perfect cold weather scent for wearing outside, going to the bar or something like that. Very mature scent not for younger crowds
