Cadence

Sampling one of the two most recent releases from Gallagher Fragrances, Cadence, a spicy, sweet, somewhat boozy mix of plum, black pepper, cinnamon, tobacco, and cedar. Fans of Guerlain L’Homme Ideal Extreme might find common ground in this slightly-less-sweet comparison, albeit still with plum and tobacco at the center. It’s very nicely done, a great option for colder weather, especially, with an air of sophistication and a great balance to not render it too heady/spicy given the mix of tobacco, cinnamon, and pepper, especially. Overall, it’s an outstanding fragrance, probably my favorite release from the house this year so far (I’ve not yet smelled Cremelle), along with great entries from last year in Tonkazure and Purple Powder. Like the most of the main Gallagher line, Cadence is EDP concentration and priced at $125 for 50ml, very reasonable in the current market, considering the creativity, performance, presentation, and service of this house of more than eight years. It’s sold via the house website and great boutiques like Perfumology. 8 out of 10

This fragrance is beautiful. It opens up with the juiciest vibrant plum. After a while the tobacco emerges, but still very plum heavy. It's definitely the star of the show here. The smokey woody notes get heavier than the plum after about 15 min, but I still smell it in the background. The dry down is the perfect balance. Even though this fragrance is very smokey, the plum and honey brighten it up so much. I'm going to say it's unisex. I would definitely wear this on a night out. It's very sexy. It's up there with Rosé Noir, which I absolutely love also. I think it's very similar, maybe similar enough that if you own one of them, you wouldn't necessarily want to buy a full bottle of the other.

I am the curious middle-aged bloke who will purposely seek out a fragrance bearing a civet note outside of the IFRA ban to better understand its olfactory profile, its historical prestige, and its artistic connection to perfumery. Even if the end result is a trip to the dermatologist. Never Google how musk is expressed from a civet. As you can see from my Fragrantica shelves, I am accustomed to deeper, traditionally “masculine” fragrances such as incense, woods, leathers, spices, tobacco or maybe some oud. I just received the Gallagher discovery set because I was curious to sample Cadence after discussing Texas perfumers with a buddy of mine from The Scent Room in Dallas. Cadence opens with a bold, juicy burst like plum and peach that aren’t typically front and center in my fragrances. It’s got a lively, almost effervescent quality that can catches you off guard if you’re expecting something brooding. I think I can detect the pepper, but that first note is overshadowed by the clove. I'll be curious to smell the drydown in a few hours. I like it for now. It feels like I'm wearing a linen blazer with no shirt underneath. It's liberating, it's bold for me, and maybe slightly eccentric. Edited to add my husband walked into my office about a half an hour after I spritzed asking if I spilled ginger beer on the carpet. That's it! That's the scent I was trying to place. Right now Cadence is like stepping into a MOMA after a life of the Uffizi Gallery. It’s disorienting at first, but with an open mind, it becomes something you appreciate not because it’s masculine, but because it’s interesting and well-composed.

If you like tobacco, you'll probably like this fragrance. For me, it's too overpowering at the start. It does temper a bit as you wear it. Don't really get the plum note. I get the honey after about 30 minutes. It's well-blended and lasts a very long time. Great value for the price.
