Naples

Gallivant Naples is, as of early 2022, the most recent release from the house, which has prominent notes of incense and sea salt, along with pink pepper, ginger, bergamot, patchouli, and vetiver. It’s resinous and salty first and foremost, with spicy and earthy accents in the background. It’s fresh yet deep, inviting but a bit mysterious, and altogether a well-rounded, versatile, year-round-friendly type of fragrance, conjuring a coastal city with ancient history that nonetheless feels full of life. It straddles the line between what is at sea and above ground, and what lies beneath, in the buildings, underground; it has roots, but flies a bit. Along with Berlin, it’s my favorite of the house to date, and I’m happy to have a bottle. Lastly, I find it to be among the better-performing fragrances in the line. Naples is available in both the traditional 30ml sizing for $95 as well as the new 100ml size for $100ml, and is sold at great boutiques like Perfumology, where I bought mine. There’s also an updated discovery set, Nomad Set 2022, that includes samples of Naples and other Gallivant fragrances. 8 out of 10

This scent is very sweet, smooth, a little floral, and a little amber. On my skin, the opening had a bit of that orange, but that faded fast. It quickly became sweet and some beautiful incense. I mostly smell incense, amber, and patchouli. This was not fresh, salty, or oceany like other reviews had said. This is just like walking into your local hippie shop; a lot of incense, and the place feels so warm and welcoming. This is so sweet and smooth I can just bathe in this beautiful cloud. 10/10 so great.

I think this is really nice. It opens bright and soapy with an undertone of incense. It turns into a mid that reminds me of AdG Profumo. It's less aquatic and has a backbone of warm spice so it's different enough, but the sea notes/olibanum/patchouli combo will remind you of that profumo feel. Then it dries to a woody, smoky, and spicy scent that's cozy and enjoyable. I think it's my favorite of the line. Will update as I test further.

I got a sample from Luckyscent, this fragrance is interesting. I'm only a couple hours in, and the opening is beautiful. I get the aquatic notes with green notes then it goes into church incense, like a sunday morning walk by the Mediterranean to church. I will dab this on one hand and Zoologist Squid on the other to see if there is any similarities. Edit: This is reminding me a little of a fresh version Amouage Epic Man.

I love this. I wear it to bed. It reminds me of one of my all time favourites sadly no longer available, Mon Numero 10. It has a similar rich old leather and wood scent with incense but Naples has lighter fresher notes too. I find it a rich and elegant night time scent.

Naples is one of the most intriguing offerings from Gallivant. It is quite unique - I can't think of any similar scent. It can best be summed up as a cross between a marine scent and a churchy incense, evocative of its name without being obvious. The former is one of my least favourite scent profiles, while I am a huge fan of the latter. However, after a promising opening, it becomes a bit discordant and underwhelming, and I'm not fully convinced that it works. Naples opens with a bright, freshly-chopped ginger note, spicy yet dewy, with a burst of salty freshness thanks to the marine accord. It thankfully avoids smelling chemical. Pink pepper adds slightly sweet spice, keeping things aromatic and paving the way nicely to the incense heart. It becomes surprisingly soapy as it develops, and it feels a little discordant as a result. The incense note is beautiful - ecclesiastical perfection - but the marine accord doesn't allow it to be either dry nor balsamic enough to shine. The labdanum adds a soft leather-like amber nuance to the incense. Soft woody notes creep in as it dries down, but it feels a little underwhelming - it is primarily a soapy skin scent, bright and clean with some woody and musky nuances. Some incense lingers. It is pleasant, but underwhelming. Sillage and longevity are moderate. It is a unisex, transeasonal daytime scent. Olfactory art that doesn't quite pull off what it hoped to achieve, Naples is reasonably pleasant but I'm not convinced. It aims to be a marriage of marine with incense, but it falls short, being neither one thing nor another. Still, bonus points for creativity and a nice opening. And, to echo @deelecto below, kudos to Gallivant for not succumbing to a lazy orange blossom scent for their Italian-themed offering! 3/5.

Bright and fresh opening. Citrus and the sea. 10 minutes later it had calmed and gave a plastic like scent. 20 minutes later it was soft woods with a bit of soap. An hour later and I can still smell “summer sunshine at the sea.” I like it!

Woody but not overly heavy with a good amount of resinous notes at play. I really liked this but unfortunately my spouse did not, so this goes in the "pass" pile. It may be too resinous for some people depending on their tastes.

A slightly soapy incense and labdanum. Doesn't remind me of Zoologist Squid (a personal favourite) suggested by the review below. More like a smokier ELdO Attaquer le Soleil (also a favourite). Wavering between like and love.

Smells like a church by the sea. Wood and incense mixed with salty notes. I like it. Gives me summer mood with more traditionally winter notes.

This is a very good church-like incense perfume.

This is one of the most unusual and contemporary of the fragrances from Gallivant, but unfortunately it is also one of the most incoherent. This is supposed to smell like the twin powers of Naples, the Church and the sea, and there certainly is strong marine water here and also some incense. I'm not sure what the pink pepper and the guiac wood are doing in here, though, and though they feel very up-to-date, neither is really a favorite of mine (especially not pink pepper). Since Gallivant fragrances are not expensive, I can see this being worn by someone who wants to stand out in a crowd. But at the same time, although this tries to evoke the sense of that beautiful, storied, scary Italian city, it just doesn't succeed. I've been to Naples, and this just doesn't evoke Naples.

I got a generous vial in an exploration kit and it’s interesting: I can imagine if you are into incense perfumes, you’d be very happy to find this one. The name fits well: when I smell this I am thinking of a beautiful church or posh antique store. Personally, it has a bit too much amber/patchouli/incense to my taste for me to wear this. It makes it a bit sallow and dusty (that antique store..) But I would love this as a scented candle. For me it’s more an interior scent for a chique boutique hotel, rather than a perfume to wear. PS. Longevity is okay and the scent is linear: what you smell is what you get.

A dilettantish scent that aims for two targets and lands neither - some aquatic freshness, some smoky resin, with the result a slight mess that makes little lasting impression. The drydown is also just ok, a soapy cleanness on the skin. I at least applaud a scent named for an Italian locale that doesn’t just smell like orange blossoms, for once.

Ginger/salty incense + cardamom/musky woods. Great start, but dries down a bit too soapy. Clever depiction of Napoli's essence nevertheless, referring to the religious (a.k.a. superstitious) ties & the sea.

Brave combination of marine notes and incense that didn't pay off

I was excited to try this fragrance - I just couldnt fathom how sea and ozonic notes were going to combine with labdanum. Sadly, for me, all I get is labdanum which doesnt thrill me. I am definity more of a 'fresh' lass and I had hoped this might be a sultry evening scent for my collection but no. I love Gallivant as a perfume house but Naples is not for me. If you like the darker, heavier, spicier side of scent...you will not be disappointed.

Naples opens airy, floaty, and synthetic, and then acquires a veil of dry scratchy smoke. Sheer smoke, a hint of spice, and a vaguely aquatic note. It's better than it sounds; it does feel like a vacation in a fancy hotel, all sleek and modern. But that's pretty much all we get, all day long. Subtle, sheer airy/watery synthetics, with a faint whiff of smoke. Not unpleasant but rather dull. And what does it have to do with the city of Naples?
