Ernest

Ernest was relaunched in August 2022, in a Parfum Extrait concentration, following the production partnership signed between Gentleman’s Nod and Mane. However, Ernest was one of the first fragrances sold by the brand (along with GEORGE, JACKIE, and JOHNNY), through the work initiated by the founder with fragrances applied to grooming products, not for the body. Its name pays homage to Ernest Hemingway and the new formulation was created by Vincent Kuczinski. With a 27% concentration, it is classified as citrus-fruity and brings notes of lime, mango, bergamot, lemon, and grapefruit at the beginning. Then, notes of tobacco, lavender, and jasmine beat in the heart, while the base carries notes of tobacco, cedar, vetiver, and sandalwood. Ernest is an example of what happens when classic meets modernity. It is the representation of the masculine universe, especially when we think about shaving and the fragrances of a bygone era, full of citrus, wood, and moss. The output is like a tour of Italy and the areas of producers of the famous Calabrian bergamot. In this fragrance, bergamot reigns and its intoxicating perfume overlaps the other sour, acidic, and vibrant nuances of lime (for us in Brazil, Tahiti lemon) and Sicilian lemon. And the quality is evident! There is almost zero evolution and everything revolves around the tobacco and the citrus notes. But Ernest does not reveal an extremely rich or sweet tobacco. For me, it is not an obvious tobacco, but a light and herbal tobacco with facets closer to fougère compositions. The beauty is in finding the jasmine, very subtle, and in feeling the tropical aspect that the mango note exudes from time to time. The dry down is greener and woodier and the vetiver is in harmony with the tobacco note, which gains a touch of creaminess from the sandalwood. Who identifies with Ernest? Those who have already worn Armani Eau Pour Homme, just to illustrate. But of course, Ernest's fragrance is more current. On my skin, however, the performance was not as impressive. It is a type of perfume with many volatile notes and, therefore, a sensation of less durability and projection. Near Juniper Reverie, for example, (another fragrance by the same brand) Ernest is almost imperceptible. Finally, I classify Ernest as a fragrance for daytime use, with a certain versatility, which is excellent for professional environments, and has great quality. I don't know if I would buy a second bottle, but I feel like the “signature effect” could grow over time.
