Eucris Eau de Toilette

This is truly outstanding! English gothic medieval royalty, dark forests, old castles, and knights in bottles. Eucris is the magnum opus of the classic and venerable British wet shaving company, barbershop, and perfumer Geo. F. Trumper, based in London. Geo F Trumper Eucris EDT, from 1912, is a classy, elegant, refined, aristocratic, regal, luxurious and gentlemanly scent, well known in the wet shaving community, but isn't too well known outside of it, and isn't marketed or broadcasted across the Internet. Eucris is a "hearsay fragrance"; rumors about it and its scent profile make people interested in it. Eucris has a small but dedicated clientele, regardless of whether they’re into wet shaving or are just avid fragrance enthusiasts. What brought me to try and purchase Eucris EDT was my love for the Bond novels and Bond movies, since James Bond purportedly wore this scent in two Bond novels—"Diamonds Are Forever" and "On Her Majesty's Secret Service." Regardless if Bond wore Eucris or not in these two Bond novels, Eucris is a masterpiece with its own merits. Eucris EDT is a combination of Edwardian-era British royalty in a bottle, combined with an old classic English butch, ultra-manly, no-nonsense barbershop feel to it, that in an olfactory way probably resembles and belongs in a London setting of the late 1800s and the early 1900s—yet interestingly feels very timeless and up-to-date. The olfactory impression: A dark, thick, mysterious, inky, and surprisingly fresh and soapy gothic (everything is relative) oakmoss and old and rotten black currant combination, with sandalwood and floral notes lurking in the background. It smells like an old and ancient other-worldly fantasy forest in a magical fairy tale, with old castles and knights in the background. Very outdoorsy—it smells a little bit like wet or damp earth and tree moss in a dark gothic forest in the late afternoon, evening, or nighttime in the fall or winter. Eucris also has a slightly smoky, leathery undertone with something in it that reminds me of tobacco. Eucris’ bitter, slightly harsh, and austere, butch, and ultra virile aroma is probably attributable to the oakmoss, while the sweet and soft underpinnings are probably due to the black currant and sandalwood, and the fresh aroma is probably attributable to the floral notes. The “old” or “rotten” feel of the black currants is probably the key factor that adds to the darkness and mystery of this oakmoss-heavy scent. It’s probably the ”old” or ”rotten” black currant aroma mixed with oakmoss that lends Eucris its ancient and old other-worldly character. But the sandalwood and floral notes keep Eucris balanced, refined, elegant, civilized, and very gentlemanly. Eucris EDT is surprisingly elegant, refined, luxurious, upscale, aristocratic—regal even—in character. Yes, Eucris is one of the most regal-smelling fragrances I’ve put my nose on, next to Geo F. Trumper Eucris EDP and Penhaligon's Sartorial. Eucris’ black currant note makes it vaguely similar to the black currant note of Creed Aventus. Eucris’ olfactory impression makes me think of it as an absolute masterpiece—probably 1 of the 10 greatest men’s fragrances of all time, deserving a perfect olfactory score of a 10/10. Performance: The Achilles’ heel is the performance. Almost nonexistent sillage and projection on my skin and 1-2 hours of longevity. Occasions and settings: Eucris EDT is probably ideally worn on cold or semi-cold days, in spring, fall, and winter—primarily cold days, evenings, and nights in fall and winter. Definitely a suit and tie fragrance ideal for formal or semi-formal occasions and settings. Since I’m smitten by the scent of Eucris—to the extent that I’ve made it into my signature scent—I’ve switched from Eucris EDT to Eucris EDP, which gives me basically the same Eucris DNA but with greatly improved performance. Final score: Despite a very weak performance, sillage, projection, and longevity, I still give Geo F Trumper Eucris EDT a 10/10.

Oakmoss!!!! Lots of oakmoss. And caraway with a little unsweetened black currant. I know the pyramid above lists oak moss in the base, but it is forcefully present from the first seconds. There is a genuine oddity in the heart of this scent, white florals that manage to come across as dark and gothic. The base features a creamy, sandalwood tinged musk. The evolution is fairly minimal but there is a slight progression to this scent. I think this scent smells great. I like to watch quite old, black and white horror films once in a while and I like to don this scent when I do. But I also occasionally wear it on cold days, particularly in autum, where it just seems to work perfectly with the season. Longevity is not good with the EdT; four hours maximum and then only in high humidity but not hot environments. Trumper's is a very English house and, basically, this scent is compounded for London in the late fall and winter. In other environments, you can expect minimal duration and poor projection. Going heavy with applications doesn't seem to increase projection for me in hot it dry conditions. The EdP, which I have tried but do not own, has significantly greater projection and longevity. The ceramic bottle in which Eucris is sold is exceptionally fitting for the fragrance and quite elegant. Note that this is a metered splash bottle that allows easy control of the amount you apply, not a spray. I have put some Eucris into a travel spray for easy application, but sprayed or splashed, the performance of this fragrance and my perceptions of its notes are the same. This is one of those fragrances that you either hear about through word of mouth or you don't.. There is no advertising for Eucris and no Internet hype train. This is a venerable product (1912) that might perhaps be said to smell like Jacomo de Jacomo or even Quorum if you ignore some elements of each, but really, it is unique. It has endured because it has a small, but devoted following. This scent smells masculine. Morticia Addams is about the only female I can imagine enjoying Eucris, she would appreciate both its dark gothic charms and it's slight floral notes. Lilly Munster would find the scent lacking dusty, powderyness, I think. Women who actually exist would probably think this fragrance makes them smell like their great-grandfathers. If this scent intrigues you, definitely try it before buying. I imagine most men who like this fragrance will be at least middle aged, but because of the barbershop associations of this scent (there are excellent hair tonics, soaps & shave creams in the Eucris line) and the suitability of many of its product line elements to the wet shaving trend, I can also imagine younger, hip guys getting into Eucris in conjunction with their personal care regimens. Folks who enjoy unique vintage scents should make an effort to get their noses on Eucris. Recommended.

Want to raise your stiff upper lip trait about 1000 points? Well, look no further. Now, if the lip in question has to belong to a male no matter what, then it gets even better. Eucris is screaming "MEN ONLY!" at the top of its lungs! No male chauvinism here mind you, I fancy girls who dig masculine perfumes. A lot. But Eucris is one of the very few perfumes that I can't imagine a woman wearing them. And this is as ironic as they come, since its name derives from the Greek word "Eucharis" which means elegant and graceful, and it's a...female given name in Greece. Eucris, besides not being "female" in the slightest, is not very elegant or graceful either. It's actually so thick that it can be worn as an armour. An armour which was left for years in a musty attic, inside a sandalwood chest that once contained spices. In this attic, a fine English gentleman keeps all the items that he collected while roaming the globe and which are not impressive enough to be displayed in the main hall. But these seemingly undesired and mislaid relics are in fact the ones he cherishes the most. Like a determined and unyielding defender, Eucris draws a line on the ground and envelopes you in an aura of reverence and "I don't have time for this!". Especially when "this" is something like bitching about having being ordered to sweep the deck twice instead of once last week, while the boat you're on is split in twain by torpedoes and sinking fast in shark-laden waters with the nearest land way out of sight. Well, in this case Eucris would be the one worn by the captain, who would manage to deal with everything thrown his way, without loosing a single soul or his composure even for a second. And who would be awarded the Victoria Cross shortly after landing. Posthumously more likely. I showed the bottle to an old friend of mine, who loves perfumes but is not really into their history, and told him that this very bottle comes from 1912. Well, by just looking at its out-of-an-aesthete's-dreams bottle he partially believed me, and what disbelief was left vanished after sniffing it, cause as he said, there's no way such a perfume belongs anywhere after World War II. And he was right... Eucris is an oddity in our cursory times. Most perfume bottles are filled with perfume. This one's full of ghosts, but although ghosts are some sort of a national sport in England, the ones sleeping inside Eucris' bottle belong to a different kind. The one that smiles and laughs leave behind them. But all these smiles were faint and bitter and all these laughs were short-lived and sarcastic. If you have seen "Easy Virtue", Eucris is the fragrance I imagine James Whittaker (excellently portrayed by Colin Firth) would wear, if he bothered to wear any fragrance at all. Haggard but wise, and no-nonsense till the end. Like the soul of England in a bottle...

A woody/floral/herbal stunner that has been a mainstay in my bathroom for over 37 years. I love it as much this day as the day I discovered it in my father's shaving bag. Nothing has challenged it as my scent of choice. It has been consistently excellent for the duration, and for me is perfection. The one I'd wear in the last days and hours to comfort me before the journey to eternity. Eucris has a pedigree that is pretty much peerless having been worn by the great and the good for over a century. A visit to their shop in Jermyn Street, Piccadilly is to momentarily step into Edwardian London. Inhabited by impeccably polite staff heedful to tradition, it is a world away from the perfume counters of Harrods, Selfridges and Debenhams where the air is dense with liberally offered spritzes all competing against themselves. We are instead ensconced in surroundings that recall a time of Empire, brimming with Old World charm, and graced by gentry in town for fittings with their nearby shirt-makers - exceptions being the curious visitor, and the odd rascal from the world of politics. The sharpness of the black current contrasts with the gloominess of the caraway, coriander, lily-of-the-valley and jasmine. You become enveloped in an aura of rural England. The drydown evokes walking the coastal and country paths on The Cleveland Way in spring and early summer. Hawthorn, blackthorn, elderflower, juniper and nettle - English hedgerow greenery in its full glory. It results in an ambience of dank, mossy, undergrowth-type earthiness and works perfectly with the tartness of the black current. The extraordinary thing is, the floral elements contrive to make it even more sombre, and remind me of church flowers and chapels of remembrance. Not in a negative way, but in a profoundly beautiful and dignified way. One of several magnificent Trumper perfumes, Eucris stands tallest and showcases the ultimate in their craft, so that even after so very many years, it still has a mysteriousness and a near magical effect on me. Eucris is unique, and as English as Rolls Royce. In my opinion, this scent alone puts English perfumery on a par with the best in the World. Enduring, Eucris is in a word, wondrous. James Bond most famously wore Eucris by Geo. F. Trumper in Ian Fleming’s “Diamonds Are Forever.” For Bond fans its being in that book set it apart as a glamorous masculine fragrance from 1956 on. A masculine scent for sure but guess what? Tiffany Case would smell smashing in this scent too. A splash or two behind the ears and on the décolletage, a glass of champagne and voilà, magic. Created in 1912 by the famed London gentleman’s barbers you can bet that at least one bottle went down with the Titanic. It is a classic woody floral musk scent that when worn is sublimely rich and sophisticated in a very old school barbershop manner. That can be a good and refreshing thing in the world of todays gourmand and oud craze. At over a hundred years old it is still a star in the masculine fragrance firmament. It opens with the pungent slightly animalic bite of black currant, sweet caraway and earthy coriander. Then up from the bottom right though the mid notes comes the killer beauty of the oakmoss. It grabs the jasmine and lily of the valley in the mid note range and turns them on their ears giving them a toughness they rarely display. These flowers transfigured by the oakmoss are the Bond Girls of the scent, beautiful, tough and slightly dangerous. The dry down is all creamy sandalwood and musk, clean and sophisticated to the end. The Oakmoss holds on and never lets you forget who is boss in this fragrance. Eucris lasts around ten hours on my skin and has a respectable silage of about three feet in the fist few hours and then six to twelve inches in the dry down. It isn’t shy but it is discrete in its style and allure. The wonderful thing about Eucris and many classic old perfumes and colognes it that they carry a history, a life of there own over the decades and many stories along with them. If handled and nurtured with love by the houses that created them they can be as lovely, exciting, sexy and relevant today as the day they were first un-bottled and enjoyed by the public. Some call this barbershop but wouldn't say that all, although Trumper is technically a Barbershop it is definitely a perfumer aswell in the classical British style. In terms of this fragrance, I feel this is masculine perfection, it's neither too dark nor is it too bright, old fashioned or modern, it stands alone. It lacks sweetness even though it has a fruity note which may baffle some people, the fruity note just isn't the typical candied fruit found in many fragrances, it's quite tart. Lily of the valley helps round this out balance caraway and blackcurrant and also helps the smooth transition into the sandalwood and musk, it's really well put together but not in a clean cut wholesome way, this may odd but it's kind of menacing, if it were a person it would be Christian Bale, skillful with a grumpy edge. This needs to be worn with confidence, someone who is comfortable in their own skin, a man, I don't say man and mean a specific age, I first wore this at 23, I knew myself, I wasn't hungry for people's approval so this is isn't for the older guy who wishes he was like still 25 and just rocks Sauvage because he thinks his daughters friends might think he's cool. It's for someone who has a backbone.

Love, love, love this is where I understood that the vast majority of modern perfumery is not for me, from Eucris, 3 things made me meet this masterpiece, my love for traditional shaving, my love for 007, and the love for the classic. Opening of blackcurrant, musk, white flowers and sandalwood, the cornerstones of British perfumery, which here turn into a unique perfume that almost seems to merge with its beautiful bottle, Victorian and ... gothic in appearance, but not in essence, one of the two fragrances inextricably linked to James Bond and Ian Fleming together with floris n089 which I will talk about very soon, a bottle that recalls James Bond's tuxedo, tuxedo and a nice Martini "Shaked not stirred" obviously .... ahahahah I love using it alone, or with a little extra pampering with its shaving cream, badger brush and free hand obviously black, I wear it strictly in an elegant outfit, especially on leaden and rainy winter days, it blends very well with the environment, and I in a suit and braces feel like 007 for a morning, for many it may be old or obsolete, for me instead it is a must in my collection and in my neck, but I am an old man young, so I don't count🤣

Geo F. Trumper recently released a new and greatly improved splash/stopper bottle for Eucris EDT, which I've now got in my collection. It's still the same amazingly and breathtakingly beautiful, masculine, elegant, aristocratic, regal, dark and mysterious, sublime, and ethereal fragrance as before, but in a greatly improved bottle. The final score is still a 10/10. PS: After comparing Eucris EDT to Eucris EDP, I've concluded that they might be 85-95% similar, although I'll admit that's difficult to quantify since we aren't privy to the actual ingredients and formula behind the fragrances. Putting the aesthetics of the bottles and the performance of EDT and EDP aside and focusing solely on the scent profile, I'd say that Eucris EDT is mainly driven by a winey and fruity black currant note supported by oakmoss, sandalwood, and florals, while Eucris EDP is primarily an oakmoss scent supported by black currant, sandalwood, and florals. Eucris EDP smells more inky, smoky, and earthy, while Eucris EDT smells more winey and fruity. But, in my humble opinion, both of them are perfect and flawless masterpieces deserving a perfect score of 10/10.

This is a review of the new Edp version of this scent. For a fragrance that came out in 1912 it does evoke from the smell a sombre mood like a rainy day in Downton Abbey or something Mr Darcy would wear from Pride & Prejudice. The bottle is quite beautiful and ornamental with it's black and silver motif. The smell is fresh and soapy with lots of moss and musk. Out of this you can smell hints of blackcurrant, cumin, spices and light florals. The quality is very nice with vivid notes that smell Soapy smoky and ethereal. Everything is blended and balanced so that no one note overwhelms the other out of the oakmoss musk. Eventually the scent becomes cleaner with the musk becoming more prominent and the sandalwood showing up here and there. The fragrance is easy and very lovely to wear. Compared to the Edt the scent lasts over eight hours on my skin though it does stay close to you within half a arms length. It also smells more smooth and refined with some of the notes been more balanced. The cumin note has been dialled way back for example. All in all a very classy scent with a dark sombre mood suited for the gentlemen.

Eucris is a real gem. Its a manly scent and very sophisticated. It's dark. It's mysterious. It is beautiful. I love the combination of blackcurrent blended with musky spices and wood and the rich oakmoss in this works so well. In short, it makes me feel great, even powerful. This does have like a gothic feel i totally agree with others on that. I feel this is what Count Dracula would wear to seduce and then go in for the bite! It's downside is perhaps the performance. While it has OK performance it does not project like a beast or stay for as long as i want, but then again if i could choose, this would NEVER leave, it's so good. Eucris is not loud, it's mysterious, sophisticated and subtle but does get noticed. I have had numerous compliments wearing this! Price is also quite high but i don't wear this other than for special occasions so it won't run out so fast. When it does i will buy another, for sure! Bottle is very cool too. Pitchblack. Suits the scent. Can't recomend Eucris high enough - 10/10 I love it.

Ok so I been called a fregarnce snob, it's not true I just find fregrances I like are niche, or not mass sold or well known. like a fregarnce but I don't keep to one type more a grouping of styles.. This fregarnce for me sites happily in a with in my Acqua Di Parma Ezzennza or my Bvlgri as it has floral heart notes but still woody and fresh.. The fregarnce itself is fresh, floral and woody. I'd happily put classically refined gentalman. Not putting masculine as petrol and greese are masculine but I would want to smell of it.. It's a up lifting fregarnce to get you balanced and ready to walk out the door and just be you.. noticeable understated but noticeable. As for the claims of not lasting that's true you'll get a few good hours but that's the style of fregrances it is want longer then use the shave range build it up and used a amplifier lotion from Guerlain.. Well hope it helped oh and PS, the bottle is perfect in my room next to my classis razors and shave oil.

Eucris is a beautiful representation of a classical, true old world style chypre from the Mediterranean; adding in the European touch of caraway to make it stand out. There's not much more to add that others have already said, but it has to be said that this is marvelous in humid heat, if applied with enough restraint. The floral touches of jasmine and lily of the valley (the now banned Lyral being used, with the impression lasting all the way through the drydown) really shine in the heat. While the winey/fruity touch of black currant help keep things from smelling rotten. There's also a bit of benzoin in the base to help round things out further. Of course, the loads of moss in this is just sublime. If you're into historic pieces that actually translate well today, this is a no brainer.

I got Eucris EdT almost ironically. I was a fan of the “skin food” lotion as an aftershave balm, but I didn’t see any real life situations where I’d be wearing the EdT with a straight face. Then Halloween time comes around and I decide to do a “goth stuff” marathon. Encre Noire, Moth, Eucris. Well shit, I’m a total convert. Eucris is calming, comforting, absolutely acceptable outside of the house. Cold weather seems more friendly to those notes but it can be worn all year round with appropriate restraint. Eucris feels to me like a name that’s been out of fashion for so long, you start seeing new babies named that. Or maybe I’m just getting more “nose confident”.

My all time favorite scent. My signature scent, I suppose. Love it. Can't discern what the notes are, but it's heavenly to me. If you were a teen in the 80s, you will probably like it. I heard one reviewer say this was like Safari by Ralph Lauren and couldn't disagree more. I tracked down Safari and it's nothing like it. This is also NOTHING like Quorum.This is more musky, which I prefer. This is elegant... I have 6 new bottles of this. Also have the EDP, and, on my skin, the EDT is stronger. Go figure. I'd give this 6 stars if it were an option. Spectacular. Class. Elegance. F#$%in'-A!

Alas, this is not a review, although I do own the Skin Food version of this, and in love, I decided to opt for either the EDT or the EDP, I have over70-80 Niche frags, but this is just completely different. The reason I opted to write something here was merely a thank you to the reviewers below for their accuracy, contrast and comparison of old and new, and the EDT vs the EDP, especially to @MaxMellows and @Peter The Fragrance Lover. However I'm still at odds whether to go for the EDT or EDP.... :)

Eucris litterally makes me shiver with pleasure! It perfectly fits the idea I have about a classic and traditional but absolutely not aged fragrance. A dirty/clean peppery /cumin opening evolving into a strong herbal-musky drydown while a robust oakmoss presence watches from the above. Crispy, snensual, dark, mature and elegant but not mannered. Probably not so easy to wear but nonetheless excellent. A staple in my wardrobe. Since 1912, one of the best in its genre. Rating: 8.5/10

I discovered this eau de toilette in the shop of Trumper in Jermyn street. In the mean time they have moved a few meters further to Duke of York street. This is a scent which seemingly goes very well with my particular body and not necessarily with another man's body. A female colleage who just loves it got a sample and asked her hubby to put it on suddenly came to the conclusion that what she loved on me was more an odour than a scent on him. So one advice: try before you buy.

Eucris is one of my top five fragrances. Yes, I'm an oakmoss fan. The scent is strong, rich, unique, masculine, and projection and sillage are excellent. It's not for everyone, though. This EDT puts me in the mind of The Haunted Mansion at Disney World; it smells like death in a good way. Sort of, "Breathes of life of gathering gloom." I also have the deodorant stick and body wash for a complete embalming. Seriously, I love Eucris and hope to get the newer EDP someday.

9.1/10 God this is a masterpiece. Just absolutely incredible, I have a little splash tester that I applied to my wrist and, when I smelled it, I laughed at how good it was. Honestly the blackcurrant and oakmoss woodsy thing that's going on is just euphoric. This is like a more refined version of Creed's Aventus; I need to get my hands on the edp version of this, because it's incredible. I can definitely see why Bond wore this.

Today I am briefly testing Trumper's drier, more leathery offerings Astor, Curzon, Eucris and Marlborough together. It took me a few tries to distinguish them. Eucris is weaker at first, with lavender and bay leaf, then strong and sweaty with mint or some other sharp herbs. Drydown is multifaceted...dirty for a while like Yatagan, then back to soapier dry herbs with a dash of sweet spice.

The bitter 80's moss is the main player here, supported by a noticeable creamy sandalwood and a hint of spices. Blackcurrant is also noticeable in the early opening. Gentleman-ish, reminding of old days, but not dated and very wearable. Oversplashing is needed to reach an average performance, but for under $40 that I paid for, I'm very pleased! This is lovely stuff. I have the EDT, the skin food and a decant of the EDP. The talk of it being dark, sinister and gothic is IMO totally misplaced. Instead I'd call it deep and with quite a powerful mood altering effect taking one inwards. Maybe not for everyday as it's powerful stuff but at the right time I find it highly therapeutic

A true blast from the past! Eucris is described to be the signature scent of James Bond quoted in Diamonds are forever💎 all I can say is this scent inspired many perfumers later& even Antaeus by Chanel has been inspired by eucris! Eucris is a milestone in the modern perfumery & even now it's not outdated! 🏆🇬🇧💝

Smells a lot like vintage Quorum, minus the pine note. Excellent fragrance and highly recommended. I wish it were more widely available in the USA instead of having to order it from the U.K. because shipping takes twice as long. It is worth the wait though. 2 thumbs way up and an easy 5 stars!!!

This is definitely one of my favourites. I tend to switch regularly from Le Male to more leathery and spicy eau de toilettes, till I found this one. This has now become my mainstay.

Amazing old school, very manly scent. You will definitely stand out from nowadays parfums if you wears this.

I use it regularly as my aftershave. Very nice, pleasant, masculine, classy. Love it!

Famously divisive, from arguably the only perfumer a man needs. Juicy blackcurrants, heavy oakmoss that gives a green, herbal soapiness, and smooth warmth & dustiness from cumin and sandalwood. Some gentle white florals. It's a nice brooding morning splash but little more than that if we're honest. Lovely deep blackcurrant opening, and I mean it's really lovely, the oakmoss is right at the forefront, but the cumin is heavy, and really challenging. On my skin it brings out a slight engine grease note, like I've been tinkering with a Ford Model T. It's not awful per sé, but it's always lingering even after it settles down. The bottle needs an introduction of fresh oxygen to mature before you make up your mind. Otherwise blackcurrants, tree moss, sandalwood, is a real winner in my books. Performance is hit & miss, I find it averages a gentle 3 hours after which it has all but become a ghost. I guess we do love a ghost story in Britain. You're certainly in for a fright when you consider the price. Best to sample this one a few times, and if you like it, get the EDP concentration instead.

In terms of smell it's lovely and I can't add to what others say. My issue is that it doesn't last. I supposed that I was anomistic to it. I literally splashed my neck and arms with the shaker bottle before visiting my parents 35 minutes away. They could barely detect it on me and it was all but gone for myself. I initially bought a sample of the EDP a couple of years ago. I got some on a Perlon watch strap and it lasted for weeks. When I purchased a full bottle recently I went for the EDT thinking it'd be more than enough based on my crazy experience previously with the EDP. I'll use it as a cologne after shaving shape to my beard and regret not getting the EDP. No disappointment about the smell itself. Light, uplifting, vital. The bottle is gothic gloom.

Eucris, supposedly from 1917, is a pleasant enough fruity-Chypre of esteemed gentlemanly fashion. It combines suave masculinity with a gentle, reserved nature, it is elegant yet somewhat rugged and loveable at the same time. The oakmoss has been rendered and filtered to the point of dense creaminess rather than anything damp or earthy. A soft fruity cassis contrasts the caraway beautifully, which is merciful in its spiciness so as not to come across like BO. It smells classic, refined and sophisticated, but never complex or fatiguing to wear. It sits easily on my skin as a masculine chypré, though I’m not sure it would stand out amongst a busy collection.

This would have been so suave and unique in 1912. But in today's world we are not so impressed with sandalwood and caraway seeds. I wanted to love it but I had to give it away. Initial notes are too fruity, albeit tastefully so - not sweet. Then all that remains is a strong drydown that must have been great in its day but now smells coarse and unrefined - a paradox as it would have been so unusual a hundred years ago. Sad. I felt like I'd been sleeping in an old musty dank case for storing jumble sale clothes in a glasgow tenement from 1973. Needs an overhall or to retire. How about doing a vetiver Mr Trumper?

This is a very fine, dark, oakmossy, heavy scent in a lovely bottle which definitely suits an older man. It slips on a like a dead man's suit and the heaviness of the aroma seems to weigh the feet down, shorten the breath and increase fatigue like a bad spell or a dose of pneumonia. The drydown is similar to Yatagan in some ways. It's a peculiar scent that conveys a a strange sense of doom and foreboding to the host/victim as if holding up a mirror and offering a portrait of premature infirmity as a cruel joke. Fabulous.

THE most masculine fragrance out there. It’s fresh, dark and enticing. The blackcurrant mixes well with the coriander and sandalwood. Absolutely exquisite and magical.

Owned this a few times. Oakmoss, sour, tart blackcurrants and petrol. Blended to perfection. Magnificent.

This may be the best known men's fragrance from the London house Geo. F. Trumper, and it's one of their rare works you can buy fairly easily from the US via the Internet. Even so, its appeal baffles me. Though well made, its a pretty dour fragrance: the oakmoss at its base, as others have noted, overwhelmingly predominates even from the opening, though you can detect the spices at the top and also the later jasmine. (I confess I could not find the blackcurrant said to be in this.) It smelled to me like the moss-covered wall of a cemetery. Neither a chypre (because there's no citrus) nor a fougere (no geranium nor lavender), this is just a woody fragrance, with some spices and floral notes mixed in. I confess this is not for me, although it's well made if this is the sort of Gothic thing you'd favor. It made my eyes water slightly, which cued me that the heavy use of oakmoss in it is likely at least partially real (who knows how).

When I smelled it the first thing that came to my mind was Jacomo de Jacomo. I know this one came out first. I have also Puig - Quorum, but I can't relate. I'm kind of disappointed because I was expecting something more complex with a bit of fruit. It's not sweet at all and that may be weird for some people. I only can recognize caraway and oakmoss in it. Young people are better to avoid it. Mature men over 50 give it a try before you buy.

Enigmatic, mossy, and soapy. A favorite since day one. Absolutely gorgeous.

Long reviews aren't something that I typically do, however, I was trying to be very descriptive and objective with my experience of Eucris. This was a blind buy for me. I bought the 100ml EDT shaker bottle with the traditional screw off crown cap. By far, my preference for fragrances are those with atomizers, except in the case of the Trumper offerings. For some reason, I just love the unique cap on those. With most splash bottles, you have to be careful, because the liquid flows freely and it’s easy to overapply or maybe even spill it. I’m confident that if I were to drop the shaker bottle, a drop or two might come out but no more than that. The Trumper shaker bottle dispenses fragrance very economically and if I were going to guess, I’d say one shake of the bottle equals one or two sprays of an atomizer. Now, onto the fragrance itself. I put two or three drops of the concoction into my hands, before rubbing it on my arms and the back of my neck. First off, it you don’t like the scent of black currant, by all means, avoid Eucris. By far, the dominant note is black currant. To me, black currant is likable but previously, I’d only really experienced it as a supporting note, in a fragrance like Aventus. I kept thinking that if the black currant doesn’t recede a bit, I’m going to have to scrub it off. Luckily, it does back off slightly, while the oakmoss and dark musk move in. Try as I might, I’m only picking up a little of the oakmoss and maybe a bit of caraway and cumin but I’m definitely picking up a dark, musty, somewhat ethereal musk. Lily of the valley and sandalwood are typically notes that I’m quite fond of but I’m picking up very little sandalwood or lily of the valley, if at all (as in, I might be smelling it but I can’t pick either of them out as distinctive notes). MAYBE there is a hint of jasmine in there. I SO wanted to love this fragrance, as barbershop style and traditional English houses with “proper” fragrances (Trumper, Truefitt & Hill, Taylor of Old Bond) really have an appeal to me. Unfortunately, something doesn’t mix right with my body chemistry. I don’t know if it’s too much black currant or too much dark musk or what but it gave me a slight bit of physical nausea, which is rare but it’s happened to me with several fragrances over the years. This fragrance is not at all unisex. Without question, it’s 100% masculine. In terms of projection and longevity, this is heavy, so go VERY easy with it. Even with just two or three drops, the fragrance is extremely strong. Additionally, longevity is above average. I’m aware that Trumper also has an Eau de Parfum of this and and I can’t imagine how strong that must be. With the EDT being as strong as I’ve experienced with the scent, the Parfum version easily has to be enough to make people tap out. Keywords I’d use to describe the scent include: Refined, Gentlemanly, Distinct, Discreet, Proper, Polite and maybe even Sensual. No wonder the James Bond reference keeps popping up (oh yeah, and Roger Moore was the best James Bond). If you like these fragrances, Eucris may be something that you’d enjoy as well: Creed Bois du Portugal, Dior Bois d’ Argent, Chanel Pour Monsieur Concentree and Salvador Dali Pour Homme. Bottom line: This fragrance is a strong, tenacious black currant and dark musk combo.

I wanted to like this...I really did. I actually did like the top note when first sprayed. Unfortunately, at least on me, as this fades into the middle and eventually the base notes, it starts to smell of dirty oakmoss and caraway. No woodiness, no green-ness and no black currant or anything else complex and redeeming. It goes to a place where the caraway actually begins to smell like faint body odor. I am sure someone with a different body chemistry than myself can make this work, but it is awful on me and I can completely understand the "gothic" comments in several older reviews here.

Disappointing. To me, there's no medieval vibe, no dark forests, no old castles. That would be Encre Noire. To me, this one smells almost like a generic aftershave. People like it, it's probably not bad, but it's not me.

edt is more fruity, better balanced, more airy and more floral, the urine note is always present but the cumin spoils everything. not yet. 3/10 good performance.

*One very strange thing about Eucris, I find it absolutely mysterious and unexplainable that for a scent around since 1912, I have never once seen a vintage bottle of this being sold. I do look from time to time...and never once seen one. UPDATE review: This has improved and matured with a little air and time. Projection/longevity is completely fine, and the other notes feel more present, especially the moss. Still unclear if actual oakmoss is in the new EDT bottles (not listed on box, but is on the parfum) but if it's evernyl or some other oakmoss alt, it's doing a fine job for my unseasoned nose. Never completely judge a new bottle based on first impressions, let some air get in there and always revisit, as fragrances mature/change with time as well as tastes. This is a review stating my love for the scent profile of Eucris, and my utter disappointment in the performance and aroma of my newly purchased bottle. I sampled this a few years back, and fell in love with it a bit more each time I wore it. I think I heavily romanticized it at first, based on the reviews here that call to mind ancient cemeteries, castle walls covered in vines etc. Plus, the bottle and label design are just amazing, and definitely alter the perception that what you are about to smell is going to be seriously medieval and gothic. Beyond my initial expectations, Eucris turned out to be much more than an old timey novelty, and smells amazing and not out of place today. The wonderful reviewer, Genghis Molyneux (where did they go?) had a review in here that was very perceptive, basically saying you could trace Eucris' composition and it's influence straight on down the line to Aventus. Totally accurate. Some form of moss/fruity nuances/wood+musk is a basic structure that seems to transcend time itself. Back to my present day saga, my sample was extremely mossy, filled with little nuances (definitely could pick up black currant) and dried down to more moss with a noticeable spice of cumin and a beautiful sandalwood/musk note. It smelled phenomenal. The overall vibe was a crisp, sober yet comforting mossyness that I just could not get enough of. Performance was pretty good, although it sat somewhat closer to the skin, it was perceptible in waves throughout the course of the next 4-5 hours. I ran out of the sample, and put a full bottle on my to-purchase list. I recently received a new style bottle, with improved cap (not a crimp on) and beautiful thick black glass and amazing label, all intact. One difference, I noticed the box listed no treemoss, nor any moss at all. Curious, I thought. The fragrance contained within definitely smelled like Eucris, but opened up with a sharp alcohol tinge, and none of the same complexity as my sample. Moss is present, but it seems to be turned down and there is way more of a vague fruitiness, no cumin/spice, and overall just feels thin, turned down, muted. Cue my disappointment, which is furthered by absolute lack of projection and longevity of maybe 1-2 hours max. Huh. I absolutely love this scent profile! However, I am now at crossroads of whether I should sell my current bottle, wait and see if any maturation happens and the complexity/performance improve, or if I should just keep an eye out for a seemingly impossible to locate in the US bottle of the eau de parfum. I do have Quorum, which scratches the heavy moss itch, but that comes with way too much going on and smells a bit dated, whereas Eucris is perfect in it's straightforward and more natural smelling simplicity. I thought I could rest for a bit once I found Eucris! I suppose this is the fragrance lovers conundrum that keeps many of us hurtling further down the rabbit hole, searching for that white whale. Journey, not the destination, yadda yadda...

Real-life guy here, who doesn't pretend to have a bloodhound's nose or the ability to pick out 25 shades of fruits, flowers, woods, mosses, or spices out of two or three squirts of a cologne. I'm just someone who likes to be elegant, smell nice and have enough uniqueness in my "brand" that I don't look, dress or smell like everyone else. In the last few years, I've searched for "my" fragrance. I've tried Lalique pour Homme, Tuscany, Azzaro, Bleu de Chanel, Acqua di Gio', Agua Brava, Pino Silvestre, Fico di Amalfi, Davidoff's and a couple other scents that friends have let me try, like Santos and Burberry's. I like them all OK, some slightly more than others in terms performance and taste. But Eucris EDT has finally caused me to end my search. My criteria are simple. 1) Do I like it? 2) Does it perform sufficiently well and for enough time on my skin? 3) Is it bold-facedly unisex (nothing wrong with that per se) or is it discretely masculine without being an in-your-face "hey, look this way, I'm a guy!"? 4) How do others react to it, especially the fair sex? 5) Does it have a somewhat traditional overtone? Oh, and did I mention it--6) do I like it? George Trumper's Eucris checks all these boxes for me. Others with better noses have done a fantastic job describing the top, middle, and base-notes of this fragrance, so I won't cheat my way into waxing technical about what my regular person's nose could never in a million years distinguish. Suffice it to say that this scent is extremely pleasing, makes me feel elegant, gets lots of compliments from women (as close to a panty-dropper as I've ever worn, although I'm nowhere near a tombeur de femmes--god forbid), and actually makes me look forward to wearing it as part of my morning routine. Add to this that Geo. F. Trumper is as traditional and time-honored a brand as it gets (something I value greatly), that the packaging is elegant and classic, and that the price makes it somewhat exclusive (and thus not something that everyone else will be wearing, unlike other otherwise wonderful scents like Bleu de Chanel and Acqua di Gio'), and I can say that my search is finally over. Eucris is definitely my thing. Well done, George F. Trumper.

This is a gothic and masculine masterpiece. It was created by the traditional English gentlemens' barber house Geo F. Trumper in 1912 as a hair dressing, and was purportedly the hair dressing of choice of James Bond in the novels by Sir Ian Fleming. In the 1980's it was released by the house as a cologne, in eau de toilette strength (notably stronger than their other colognes), and in 2015 as an eau de parfum (albeit in a smaller 50 ml bottle). I am reviewing the 100 ml eau de toilette. Although the hair dressing and cologne don't smell similar apparently (I've never tried the hair dressing), I can totally see this as James Bond's signature scent. It is austere, dark, and hyper-masculine and sort of smells like a niche version of Drakkar Noire - in fact it reminds me of my father who used to wear such oakmoss-heavy masculine fragrances back in the day. The scent would also be totally fitting for the Blade Runner universe as it is deeply traditional smelling yet contemporary and futuristic at the same time, oddly. The scent evokes the rain and stormclouds, and dark, somber tones. It is exactly what I imagine someone wearing in a Tim Burton movie. It is gothic, and as what one person said, "reminds you of crypts, old castles and cobbled stones under gaslight lamps with horse drawn carriages making there way through a rainy dark city". As for the scent itself, it is a dark oakmoss and blackcurrant blend. It is literally packed to the brim with oakmoss and is therefore very green and rainy, with the other major note being blackcurrant, with musk, and a very melancholic lily of the valley in the background. The eau de toilette comes in a beautiful dark ceramic splash bottle that totally represents the scent inside, and has a very good stoppage system for each drop that comes out (though I prefer to keep this in a travel atomizer and spray it). Sillage is strong with a minute amount splashed/sprayed yet oddly subtle at the same time, while longevity is quite good at over 8 hours on my skin. Overall, this is a masterpiece that deserves attention. 4.5/5

There is a bit of disinformation out there regarding the Bond connection to Eucris, so I thought I would set the record straight. Here is the passage from the novel: "He said firmly, ‘Un moment, je vous en prie,’ and went into the bathroom and cleaned himself up – amused to notice that the soap was that most English of soaps, Pears Transparent, and that there was a bottle of Mr Trumper’s ‘Eucris’ beside the very masculine brush and comb by Kent. Marc-Ange was indeed making his English guest feel at home!" Firstly, many sources claim Eucris was referenced in Diamonds Are Forever, which is not true. The above is taken from On Her Majesty's Secret Service. Secondly, we are not even sure Fleming was referencing the cologne version of Eucris; many believe he was talking about the hairdressing (far more likely as the bottle is next to a brush and comb). Third, there is no mention that Bond even used the Eucris product, though it does go on to say he 'took his time' in the bathroom so there's a decent chance he did. Finally, it didn't even belong to Bond, it was put there by the villain. Should you want to actually smell like 007, it would be more accurate to bathe yourself in Floris Limes Bath Essence, which Bond definitely used in the books and kept in his apartment. You could even go so far as to get a bottle of the Floris Limes EDT. So in conclusion, the literary version of James Bond smelled of LIME, not Eucris. (Thanks for reading and making sure two hours of research on a Friday night were not in vain!)

I have finally purchased Eucris and it now proudly takes it's place as the oldest bottle in my (albeit fairly modest) collection, having been released in 1912. I was however familiar with the scent having used the shaving cream years ago. Blackcurrant, oakmoss, leather and spices create the effect of a kind of medieval barbershop and vividly conjures gothic architecture in my mind, powerfully so. It makes me feel as though I should be spending the night in a mystic castle full of relics, dressed to the hilt and gorging on cheese, port and the breast of a buxom English rose under the light of ancient candelabras. I'm never quite sure if I am carrying it or it is carrying me - but that doesn't matter, this is entertainment and enjoyment in a bottle for me. A piece of art, blended so masterfully that it puts many moderns to shame. I think 40+ is the perfect age group for this and a black Versace suit is the order of the day as well as a "no bullsh@t" demeanour. For the femme fatales who wear Black Orchid and darkly seducing lipstick, her man should have the balls to wear this as the true original/vintage model for the likes of Antaeus and Tuscan Leather. Masculine, masterful and beguiling. 5*.

While it may be exciting to imagine Eucris as the scent of crypts and castles and ghosts and ghouls— for some, the reality might be a bit of a letdown. Don't get me wrong, I like Eucris—a lot. It's a unique and masculine scent that has endured since 1912. But if your expectations lean closer to Black Widows than Black Currants, you may be disappointed. So why all the Gothic associations with Eucris? My guess is that it has more to do with the bottle than the stuff inside. Trumper's vaguely tombstone-shaped flacon in black glass, screw-down silver crown, and Edwardian label design all contribute to the spooky Gothic vibe. And yet, it remains eminently handsome and dignified. Another flight of fancy attached to Eucris is the notion that it was James Bond's fragrance of choice. For many, just one sniff will convince you that like 007 himself, Eucris balances sophistication with manliness. Best applied shaken, not sprayed, naturally. Eucris is a brilliant fragrance created in England over a century ago. As tough as it is suave—nothing I know of smells remotely like it. And yes, that bottle is a thing of beauty... even if there are no ghosts inside.

I bought it and wore it for the first time yesterday. The scent itself is extremely masculine, it rivals the uber-masculinity of even Fahrenheit IMO. However, the performance is extremely poor. It lasts less than 5 minutes on me... no joke. I'm beginning to think I purchased a fake because it's hard to believe a cologne this masculine at this price would be so weak. I purchased my bottle on Amazon shipped by Amazon but from an Amazon seller. I'm going to have to check the code on the bottle when I get home. Maybe it just needs to age or something, or get some air in the bottle? I'll be happy to mail a sample to anybody in the U.S. that knows this fragrance to see if I purchased a fake or not. It's so disappointing because the top notes is the kind of manly scent I like a lot... it reminds me of one of my favorite masculines fragrance I wear in the winter -- my beloved vintage Quorum. Maybe Eucris is meant to be an aftershave because after all, there is no atomizer. It comes only in a splash bottle as shown in the photo. Anybody else notice the weakness of this fragrance?

Imagine you are walking along a forest path during the summer just as it has finished raining. The fragrance of wild berries and flowers waft through the air, a damp mossy wood odor exudes from the trees around you... -And then suddenly- you step on dog crap. This is actually pretty damn good for its age (a centenarian no less) and could definitely hold its own against the more modern "mature" male fragrances. When I say mature, I'm afraid I do mean 40+ maybe 50+ if I were to stretch it. Pleasant but still has the sweet old grandpa feel. And as for James Bond, if he had really worn this, his films would have been a lot less than a PG if you know what I mean. 8.5/10 considering the age (the game has shifted a little by now) and assuming it is being used by an older gentleman.
