Ferre Black

Gianfranco Ferre makes several really good, very reasonable fragrances. Uomo is a blue freshie that puts 50% of the other blues to shame. Fougere Italiano is a modern, bright lemon take on traditional fougeres. This one is a soft-spoken aromatic within the same genre as La Nuit de l'Homme. I'm not saying it is a clone in any way, but like most Ferres, this puts an interesting Italian twist on a favored convention, and comes up with something interesting and different. The lavender is the star, in a lovely aromatic style. The cardamom and citrus are supporting actors, with just the right touch of pepper to add more dimension. I personally don't get the woods that supposedly exist in the base, and if patchouli is present, it is in a very light style and a part of the whole ensemble. Also, while I don't see any notes that could explain it, there is the faintest whiff of "blue", just enough to boost the aromatic character. Overall, this is charming and likeable. Nothing daring, beastmode or demanding of attention. Age is 18 to 70, and it will work anytime above 40 degrees F. This is the type of scent that a spouse or long-term partner will love, but it won't work especially well in a singles bar. Subtle but very appealing. EDIT: After several more wearings, the vanilla (not listed in notes, but is in bottle ingredients) and orange blossom (not overly cotton candy-ish) are more evident, and this even picks up some suggestions of modern fougeric elements. In the drydown, there is a very light wood, as if someone in the next room opened a cigar humidor, but this minor note is quite welcome. As bolancb below said, this is really a hidden gem, especially for spring and summer, and it doesn't smell like everything else out there. Give it a try.

This is a great seductive and elegant scent that stays close to the skin but is really addictive and inviting. I get a semi-sweet/semi-powdery scent with nuances of lavender and a very smooth peppery feel, there is a slight creamy almost almondy feel that makes it so comforting, I guess it comes from orange blossom. The profile makes me think of Moschino Uomo, it has the same creamy citrus and powderiness to it, only a bit darker. I don't get any woods or patchouli, it's definitely more of an airy/powdery scent than anything else. Perfect for spring, fall and summer nights, I wouldn't wear it in a very hot day as it could get cloyingly sweet, or in a very cold winter day as it lacks some weight in the performance department.

Guys, this scent needs some hype, because it's a sweet little gem! It's that good! Very safe scent but amazing one. For a date or cuddling, it's superb!!! Lavender and citrus in the opening followed by gentle woody notes, so well blended. Totally non offensive, light and lasting. Compared to many fresh woody frags, this one is so smooth. Nothing that will make the storm but it's not in the average range either. It's just super nice and simple. A bit expensive but worth every penny! Not one girl I showed this to said it was bad or even middle ranged or just okay. They all said, wow what a nice fragrance, this is how a man should smell like.

The notes in this are very typical. Lavander done in a modern also manly way. It smells a lot like f black by Ferragamo but much much better. From that one I get a blast of synthetic exaggerated notes. This is classier, refined and calmer. I unfortunately blind bought the other and don't particularly like it. I would suggest people try this first.

Having owned the wonderful and now discontinued Ferre for Men (2006), I was excited to find another fragrance from this house that was still available. This one is a close encounter type of scent like so don’t expect a beast mode fragrance. There’s something sensual, sexy and elegant in its sweetness and slight powdery notes. If you’re looking for something that is grownup and has sex appeal then Ferre Black may be worth a shot. P.S. Even though it’s not listed on this site, the perfumer of this fragrance is Olivier Polge.

A very nice, soothing scent with a comforting aura to it. Definitely prominent lavender with a touch of grapefruit, ideally for winter and autumn. Does not come off as aggressive or headache-inducing and has an alright performance. Other than that, it's not too special or mind-blowing, either. Not my everyday pick, but if you're looking for a likeable, safe date fragrance, you might give this one a good shot!

First of all this is an Olivier Polge's creation, and it's probably what Ferragamo F black should have been. It's built on the fundaments of another scent he made for Gianfranco Ferrè: "In the mood for love man".The note breakdown is the same, except for the base notes. It's the night or cold weather evolution of F by Ferragamo: it's sweeter and has more spices, merely in number I mean since F has just pepper. The intensity of the spice(s) are more or less on the same level. Black opens with lavander and grapefruit (not mentioned in F but sense it also there), then a mix of spices that don't come off as harsh, mainly cardamom and pepper while the coriander is not as prominent but gives it a fresh hue. It's not the same, but it recalled memories of Bvlgari man in black minus the cinnamon to me. The orange blossom is not too strong and it is well mixed with the citrus, the spices and the lavander. The base is not too woody and the patchouli, if there is any, it's not that strong. It has powerful projection for the first hour, it decreases in intensity pretty quickly as the day goes by becoming more of a skin scent. Despite this it has good longevity, at least 9 hours. After all it's a well blended, pretty linear and,agreeing with the review below mine, powdery sweet leaning (no vanilla or tonka overdose sweet) scent, the notes from the opening and mid never truly disappear, they just get toned down. It never gets baby wipe-ish or cloying. Not for under 30, I see it more as an autumn/winter scent for the climate I live in (southern Europe). I feel it will work very well for dates and romantic situation, but it can be used it the office or formal occasion if it suits your style. Just an heads up, give it a proper test! The first time I tried it I mistakenly thought this was just a powdery lavander bomb, and gave me the "middle aged italian uncle" aftershave vibe. While not being one for the younger crowd it's not an old man scent and it is in reality more complex than what my first impression led me to believe, despite not being groundbreaking. Tried it today out of curiosity for a new Ferre scent and felt instantly let down: ordinary sweetness from a synthetic neroli over a casual lavender and some spiciness thrown there, low projection and longevity, basicly a cheap and uninspired spicy-sweet smell. 6/10

So, I got this fragrance as a gift and left it unpacked for a probably a year or so! I have to say I did not expect much, but it was a mistake. I like it! I'm usually more interested in wood/smoky/leathery/dark perfumes, and not so into freshly aromatic ones, but this one is fine. It's not a game-changer, not the one you would go crazy about, but it's interesting money/performance EDT. Definitely worth having/buying since its under 30 bucks for 100ml. As for a smell itself, It's a fresh one, but not your usual summer fresh, more like "heavy" fresh, if that makes sense (I guess the best time to ware this one is early spring and late fall). I like the smell, probably because woody and pepper notes are more dominant ones, with lavender on top. I can also smell some lemon note, but not that much, and that's probably also the reason I like it since I'm not a fan of citrusy fragrance. Smell - 8/10 (9/10 for EDT) It has a good sillage, not an enormous, but satisfying one, and people definitely notice it, especially in a first hour or two after application (I usually apply 2-3 sprays, so I guess you could get even better performance with 5-6 ones). It got me a few compliments, and great thing about this is, its likable one (most people find this smell nice, so its a safe bet, at the same time you won't smell as most "one million" guys out there! Sillage - 7.5/10 (9.5/10 for EDT) Longevity is not bad either (for EDT). It can easily notice after 2-4 hours after application, which I consider a good performance for the price (and since its EDT). Longevity - 8/10 (10/10 for EDT) Price is good, so you can always over-apply it if sillage is what you are going for (4-6 sprays would do the job). Price - 9.5/10 Overall, If you like a fresh fragrance that is not usually that much, and don't want to pay a lot this is your safe bet. Do not expect the performance of some strong EDPs, for that you have to pay much more. Overall - 8.5/10 (9.5/10 for EDT)

I like the scent. It is warm and inspires confidence in me. I am sad to say that only one hour after I apply it (3 to 5 sprays) no one near me can detect it neither can I, still I can detect it on my clothes a whole day after applying it. It hasn't brought me any compliments since I bought it 4 months ago. I am seriously disappointed in this blind buy.
