Eau de Vetyver

I completely agree with VolDeNuit37 below; this is indeed THE Vetiver, or Vetyver should I say. I’ve always regarded it as the gentleman’s Vetiver and the benchmark by which every other Vetiver fragrance must be judged, because the old adage is true: less is more. It’s subtlety is a remarkable work of restraint by Hubert Givenchy, yet actually and for a change, I’m not going to complain about it’s lack of projection or sillage because i doubt it was created with that in mind. I imagine it was created to make a chap feel clean and refreshed after his morning shave (with cream, badger brush and cutthroat razor of course!) and go out into the world, feeling he’s king of all he surveys. This is what Don Draper in Mad Men smells like I reckon! As great as the original Guerlain Vetiver is, I personally don’t feel that it matches this for elegance and class, so I really don’t understand how this isn’t /wasn’t, talked about more?! My second favourite grassy wonder, Dior Vetiver, as much as I love it dearly, pales into comparison to this and seems quite a clumsy attempt as I’m smelling them both now, side by side. It also must be noted that the quality of the sandalwood in Eau de Vetyver is just top notch; I mean proper old-school quality and it’s creaminess just balances with the greenness of the vetiver so finely. It was understandable they re-released it in the Mythiques line; well, the first formulation anyway and it was perfectly nice but not a patch on the original beauty sadly, so I shall treasure my original bottle forever and be thankful that I’m lucky enough to own it.

I recently came into possession of a small miniature of the very first formulation of this and it is very VERY good. It is more comparable to the original Carven Vetiver than it is to any vetiver offering from Guerlain or Tom Ford. It is darker and spicier than any of the aforementioned scents. A very bold and upfront vetiver. Guerlain Vetiver is for the man on the golf course working on his follow through. Givenchy Eau de Vetyver is for the man who's out to dinner with the most gorgeous woman in town. Where Carven dries down to a woody skin scent and Tom Ford and Guerlain remain a bit soapy and citrusy, Givenchy dries down to a peppery coriander that really makes it a standout in the vetiver fragrance world. Sillage is average and longevity a bit above average. Had I the (financial) resources to do so, I'd definitely invest in a full bottle that pops up online every once in awhile. It's definitely worth it. Scent: 9/10 Sillage: 5/10 Longevity: 6/10

This is a review of the relaunched Vetyver, part of Givenchy's "Les Parfums Mythiques" line. Impressively restrained. A pronounced, rooty, nutty - though not radical - green vetiver note at the center, surrounded by a conservative and very well executed bouquet of masuline gentility - cedar, perhaps sandal, refined sweetness of tonka, mossy diffusion. Where Villoresi's excellent Vetiver is all about panache, this one is all about low key elegance. Not exciting, indeed, but excellent. A great alternative for those who, like myself, cannot stomach the tobacco in Guerlain's Vetiver.

The alltime best Vetyver ever created. Dark, smooth, intense and really "in-your-nose". Not very complex but in this case complexity doesn't matter. It's the quality. This is THE vetyver.

Smells like a dark, wood-paneled study. a bit winy, and somehow...Indian? maybe I’m getting a lot of spice and sandalwood. I love it. Much richer and deeper than other vetiver scents. There’s clearly some kind of resin in the base. Not sweet, but caramelized.

This is a warm, sweet, boozy vetiver.

Original Vintage formulation - brilliant, sublime scent. Gorgeous, deep & rooty vetiver with a nice light touch of bergamot to open and a smooth sandalwood base. Precedes Guerlain's 1961 benchmark bottle. A masterpiece unto itself. Will never be made again - even in Les Parfums Mythiques' release...which is excellent, but original has something special. Timeless. If you are able to procure this juice and it has been well-preserved, it is an absolute MUST for true Vetiver aficionados. To smell it is to understand beauty. This is not a fragrance - this is an expression of scent, and a truly beautiful one at that. Have you stood in Florence, Italy at the Accademia Gallery and seen the original statue of David? I have. It is so perfectly chiseled and awe-inspiring at 17 feet tall. There is a similar sense of divine touch when a lover of vetiver smells this bottle of Eau de Vetyver from Givenchy. I am so blessed and thankful to have it. I own that as well, for wear, but this will be treasured.

Well,without a doubt this is the benchmark by which all vetivers should be judged - period ! I was lucky to score a vintage bottle of Givenchy Eau de Vetyver recently and have to tell you it's one of the classiest fragrances I have worn for years - it's apparent that something special was conceived here,I read some where that Hubert Givenchy sourced some very rare vetivers root from the Himalayas and I can believe it.Sorry Jack,but you may have had a sample that was past it's best,as the projection and silage on the vintage I have is fantastic 12 - 18 hours for me,longer on clothing - god bless you Hubert,I say a little thank you every time I wear it.

I have a sample of this vintage juice and it does smell really good. A deep dry earthy vetiver with a little rootyness, very good quality. The only thing thats lets it down is poor projection and longevity.

Rooty vetiver - deep, somber, serious, very elegant. It is the kind that is difficult too find nowadays; if you do, at an extraordinary amount of money - tested Fueguia's, found it very similar.
