Extravagance d'Amarige

Oh my god, i love it! As much as I would like to turn entirely towards niche perfumery, my love for Givenchy and older creations in general, keeps me from turning into a snob. I did not intend to purchase Extravagance at all since I rarely wear original Amarige, but my husband grabbed the phone from my hand and checked out, while I loudly protested how I am very unsure about if I will even like it let alone wear it. Well, it's a complete love. They don't make them like this anymore, in fact, not even spending 300 or 400 bucks will get you a perfume like EdA. It's sheer perfection, very light but present, much fresher than original Amarige (they don't have anything in common smell-wise either), and there is just the right balance between bitterness and sweetness. I can't really smell strawberry in this, thank god, but I can't really separate any single note, that's how great it's blended. Appropriate for any age, and i get about 6-8 hours with a single spray. Magic in a bottle, and that bottle? Beautiful!

EXTRAVAGANCE! Just like its name says this parfume is extravagante (in a good way!), it's really different from others. Fresh, bold, and so heavenly goooood. Acctually, the first time I was introduced to this fragrance I hated it, really. It was a signature fragrance of a friend of mine, and after I saw her spraying this parfum all over her from head to toes (I don't remember exactlly, but I think she was putting 8 or 10 heavy sprays), I understood why it was making me sick. So I dicided to give it a try because the smell in the bottle was nice. Since then I'm in love with this fragrance. 2 sprays are just enought to smell good all night long. P.S. After it was discontinued few years ago I had a hard time to find [my second bottle] but I did - in a parfum store, not online. I didn't wear it very often since then so the bottle is still half full, but after I saw it at a great price online I had to order it. And I just receaved it this morning! I'm so happy!!! :)))

There are VERY few scents that I instantly love, from first spray through dry down and beyond. Extravagance was the first perfume I could say this about, and so I consider her my “first love” fragrance. It is fresh, light, effervescent, subtly sweet - happiness in a bottle. I found this scent during a time in my life when I was working my way toward the sunshine after a deep sorrow, and it will forever symbolize that feeling of optimism, energy, and joie de vivre. It was my signature scent while dating the man I’ve been married to for 16 years. I keep many scents in rotation, but whenever I wear Extravagance now, it transports us both instantly back to that magical time in our lives. I don’t usually like florals, but I love this one for its clean, fresh, sunny disposition. It is the only perfume I’ve ever bought a second bottle of, after finishing the first I had rationed for many years since being discontinued. Found on eBay, perfect new condition. Lucky!

I am overwhelmed to be reading how Extravaganza is a special perfume for many here. Here is my story. I had bought it for present for my friend who passed away several years ago. This was her favorite scent and so it was for me on her. Needless to say how emotionally connecting this perfume is to me. Vertigo has given an exact description of the target audience just several comments below. This is an exquisite scent for a mature woman, 35/40--55. There is some quite unique combination of boldness and subtlety to it. I would dare to say that Extravaganza was like no other women's perfume in the market at the time (early 2000's). Honestly, it stands out even today, after over a decade. It is regretful that it has been discontinued. One can still find it in some online stores though. A very unusual and special fragrance, indeed.

I don't feel this beauty extravagant at all, in agree with Boruvka44 (if it's not an extravagant thing that someone doesn't want to use only sugar-sirupy perfumes;-)). It's very close to nature, that's what I love in it. A fresh, bittersweet harmony of marigold, nettle, pink pepper and wild strawberry (you can catch all of them here) on a lovely woody base. It's like lying in your garden on a sunny, lazy afternoon. Oddly the notes together give me another scent that I love, too: the scent of lovage (it's one of my favourite herbs) and gives me a very familiar feeling. Sillage is medium on my skin and unfortunately lasting power is not as good as others mentioned (only 4-5 hours), but on my hair and clothes it lingers much longer. The bottle is beautiful, too. It's a shame, that it's discontinued.

Oh dear, I have just repurchased it again after decades of lacking it. But I always kept it dearly close to my heart since my teens, when I first encountered with Extravagance thanks to italian fashion magazines and a little sample. Today as I was walking home from the package locker I couldn’t resis to open it and immediately put some on my wrists. (If you know, you know) It is way more fabulous than I remembered. Soapy, bold, feminine, spicy - it is everything and still so unique and so well blended. Spicy and fresh floral blast in the beginning and it is not fading or changing, keep projecting after hours but gets creamier on my skin and a little more subtle. Nothing NOTHING compares to it in my collection and now I have to find a full bottle.

Meadow in a bottle. I prefer it to Amarige as this is softer and more herbal. Edgier and greener. But both are gold. Amarige is stronger. I do not understand why this is not in production. It is a spring and summer dream. It is an abstract floral, windy and full of sunshine. Happiness, optimism and extravagance smell like that. Long dresses and hats fit this scent perfectly, as well as extravagant, graphic designs. My Mother used to wear it and I loved it so much on her. True green floral heaven. I was sometimes using it myself but it suited her so well she went through 2 bottles of it. And I was always thinking it beautiful and special.

I just love this discontinued perfume, it always makes me feel good when i wear it. It's not cloying or overpowering, it's got a lovely jasmine undercurrent but in a nice clean, natural garden way that lingers on and on. Slightly woody undercurrents but the soft florals are the focus here all the way through. I don't have many perfumes that last well on my skin, but this stays close all day. To the point i find myself sniffing my wrist at work and smiling that it still has a nice drydown. In my opinion, much nicer than the original Amarige and less spicy and more mainstream than Mariage which is a sillage, amber monster all of it's own.

This is such a beautiful perfume. My brother sent it to me from London in 2001. At first I wondered what vagance was & why there was extra. Dear me. I wore this on my wedding day & it's so special to me. I can remember the scent. Fruity floral but spectacular. My darling husband has ordered two bottles for me. I'm so excited. When I have it I'll update my review with specific notes. Until then... Oh God it's arrived. I can't cope. It's too beautiful. I'm so excited to have two of the original Extravagance. I'll never let them go. I'll be buried wearing this.

I still have a full bottle of this that I have used about 5 sprays out of. I used to wear this perfume quite a bit, and then they stopped making it, so I have guarded it so I will never be without. Kind of silly because- I have to face the reality sometime- they just don't make this one anymore! I love it. I have a bottle of the reformulation also, and though it is nice it doesn't have the depth of this one. If you look it up on this site, you can see it is short a few ingredients. Love this one and I will miss it if I finish my bottle.

This perfume was my first 'blind buy' and when I received the bottle I was for one moment afraid that it might not be what i expected. However, after using it, I can not stop smelling! I cannot place the perfume yet: it is fresh, light, flowery, but it also has something in it which doesnt make it too flowery, fresh or overwhelming (maybe that is herbal). I think it is a really pleasant perfume, which people would not recommend immediately as perfume. WIll definitley use it a lot!!!

Herbal, grassy, green, bright, sunny, refreshing - a truly uplifting gem of a perfume. I like the citrus in this - it's light and tangy and more sour than sweet. The florals are sunny and dry, like a bouquet of wildflowers picked on a hot day. I find this to be a wonderfully carefree, yet still classy fragrance. It has a bright, happy aura and is wearable in most situations. One of the favourites in my collection.

It's a very interesting scent. Thank god I can not detect anything fruity or Amarige-like in it. This is a fresh peppery scent, totally wearable all seasons, but I prefer it in warm weather. On me the violet is strong, reminds me of Paco Rabanne Ultraviolet ( that one is more subtle ). No strawberry or citrus in my vintage bottle! I love it.

It is my favorite EVER! How can I do to make Givenchy to produce it again??? I keep a sample safe and I smell it when I want to lift my spirits. Does somebody have Les Parfums Mythiques - Extravagance d ́Amarige and Extravagance d ́Amarige both? Can you describe if they are similar? And what is different? Thanks

I still remember the smell of Extravagance.I tried when it first come out.and I found it out of this world. modern feminine extravagant indeed as the name suggests. ...very beautiful !Why they discontinued it!?

This is my all time favorit.I feel like this parfume is made for me - sexy, strong ans romantic feeling. Even if I put it in morning later i the afternoon i can still noticed it. Simply adorable!!!

Someone mentioned the tagets smelling like Bal d’Afrique. I must say, this does feel slightly similar to BDA in the opening, but BDA has a musky yet sharp soapy kind of dry down that irritates my nose when I try to wear it, and Extravagant does not, it dries down much more sweet and aromatic. So I basically like this a lot more! I wouldn’t buy this hoping for a BDA dupe though, it’s just kind of a slightly similar feeling in the opening and dries down more different. I went on a vintage fragrance shopping spree recently and picked up a 50ml of this for *so* cheap. Despite being vintage, the juice is still excellent. The scent itself doesn’t feel incredibly vintage however. I feel like many niche houses have something that smells like it belongs in the same genre. I have a hard time describing certain fragrances, especially aromatic ones like these. No spicy chypey patchouli notes, not even really any woods to my nose. I get green aromatic and different florals. Tagets, violet, something yellow and sweet/nectar-like. Some sweet fruity notes in the background but nothing screams of a strong distinct fruit, maybe almost a bit like a crisp red apple with some white grape juice. Smells like a fresh clean scent without being too generic soapy or sharp. This is smooth, fresh, sexy but not vulgar. Doesn’t smell like grandma. I feel like this could easily get poured into a modern perfume bottle and relabeled with a cool name and people would go nuts for it. It’s feminine leaning, but could be unisex. Not very masculine, but again, it’s more of a “sweet green aromatic” type scent with a freshly showered feel to it. Men can pull it off as long as they don’t have issues with the florals. Isn’t so overly girly that it screams “women only.” Update: After wearing just *two sprays* of this and doing yard work on a sunny windy day, it dried down a lot and and I couldn’t figure out where I knew this smell... Then it hit me! Extravagance dries down to smell A LOT like a stronger and sweeter version of Tapis Volant by Liquides Imaginaries, another scent I own. They’re definitely different and Extravagance is a bit more feminine, and MUCH stronger, but the overall scent ends up smelling similar on me after a few hours. I guess that’s why I thought it smelled niche initially! Well worth it if you find a vintage for a good price!

I was expecting something different when I decided to get my vintage bottle. On paper I should love this but I have mixed feelings. I think what spoils it for me is the pink pepper, have never been a fan. There's this camphorousness on the opening that I just hate. The "cooling" sensation gives me the ick. I'm pretty sure the pink pepper is responsible. Despite being an opening note it sticks around for a good while. I was actually unable to smell the strawberry at first. like others have mentioned it is not a super realistic, crisp, fresh or sweet strawberry. It's a strawberry that was left in a Tupperware container in a hot car for a couple hours. A more expansive and obtuse scent than what you would initially picture when you think strawberry, which in my mind is a sharp, fresher note if that makes sense. Strawberry leaves are there too, I get the butter pastry-like nuances of iris as well. The nettle adds to that cooling herbal portions that I'm not a fan of. It does have many facets and every time you get a whiff it is recognizably EdA but you pick up something different. There's the slight vanillic nuances, and more often than that the soapy element. Hard to wear when the weather is very hot. Rubbery at times. Play-Doh like some others. Conflicted, trying to force myself to like it. I mean I do, but not wholly. The og Amarige is a safer, flatter bet than this. Definitely interesting still...

I like this fragrance. It is very different than any of my other perfumes and also any other Givenchy frags. It is bold, bright, and indeed extravagant. I normally am attracted to darker, sexier scents, but the freshness and extroverted qualities of Extravagance D'Amarige have won me over. It settles beautifully on the skin, is sweet but not saccharine, and frequently catches the attention of others. The pink pepper and green mandarin are immediately noticeable to me -- quite strongly -- but it balances pretty quickly. It also has good staying power. I love to wear this when more dressed up and feeling outgoing. Even when I'm not feeling extroverted, just wearing this one can help bring me out of my shell. If fits my look for the day whether it's more avant garde or minimalistic. Wear this one if you want something to help bring out the boldness of your personality! Good to wear to a party or out grocery shopping. I'm glad I bought it, it fits an interesting niche in my collection. I would give it about a 7.5-8/10.

Though it may have been created as a flanker, it bears no resemblance to its parent. I love Extravagance, and can say the Amarige is one of the very few fragrances I can say I hate. Extravagance, reminds me of champagne. Crisp, sparkling, bright, happy, effervescent,energizing. I do think it is best suited to warm weather...a bright warm sunny day! Floral, light, bright, only ever so slightly sweet. No darkness. As most fragrances do...it evokes emotions and has the ability to transport us in time. I began wearing this at a time when I was coming out of a very difficult time in my life, and I recall the elation and cheerfulness of the time matched this scent on me perfectly. Perfect union. Every time I spray this on, it reminds me of those days. It is uplifting. I will always try to have a bottle around, just for that.

i am testing from a partially used vintage mini bottle, so some notes may have evaporated. anyway, in the beginning i sense violet leaf, cedar and orange, i think. it's a bit green and dewy with an underlying woodiness. then the woodiness seems to get stronger, and something smells almost like maple syrup. that subsides a bit and i get an herbal slightly spicy floral, perhaps the marigolds, tagetes and nettle. there's a bit of fruitiness but it doesn't necessarily smell like strawberry, just lends a slight sweetness. it smells kind of natural, like walking through woods with flowers blooming, woods and plants around and a few fruits as well. there is also a slightly shampoo-y thing going on. overall i like it-it's light, floral, green and a bit herbal, but not in an overpowering way.

Extravagance is one of those flankers that make me want to take a DNA kit test and pour the whole thing into it to prove what sort of kinship it shares with its alleged progenitor Amarige, because I see no common features. Amarige is sun-goddess Amaterasu coming back to collect her revenge ruling over a hoard of carnivorous flowers holding her sway over jungles. Extravagance is a dryad springing through woodlands, twisting wreaths of twigs and little wild flower tendrils, tagetes and marigolds coating her hair, with their herbal-meets-flower, summer kissing autumn scent imbuing the air with a little hydrangea green spice into the mix. Lovely.

The usual dry aromatic sharpness expected from tagetes and marigold, but also something sweeter and more tender accentuating with the violet leaf and strawberry. I like it a lot, but I’ve always been puzzled by the name. This doesn’t smell extravagant, though rather elegant and refined. Extravagance is more restrained and non-oppulent as opposed to some of her Givenchy sisters. Somehow this one is the older and wiser sister of sensual Organza, sweet Ysatis and fun-loving Amarige. Another wonderful dry down.

Extravagance has really surprised me....in a good way. On first applying I was almost overpowered by the pepper, I waited, and I was rewarded with a fabulous scent. Fresh but strong florals, particularly the marigolds, and who would have thought that nettles would be so appealing in a perfume?? I'm not sure if Extravagant is the correct description...I'd go for elegant, beautiful, luxurious and classy.

This smells like a walk in the park on a sunny day: bright, cheerful and carefree. I can't even detect the different notes, it's all flowers and greenness, and a tiny bit of spice. though it's not the kind of fragrance I lean to, it's gorgeous nonetheless and very unique. Such a pity it has been discontinued! 7/10

Nice. A lot better then the original. Fresh, crisp, green and clean. Not loud but there all around me. Perfect for spring/summertime. Trevlig. Klart bättre än originalet. Fräsch, krispigt grön och "ren". Inte högljudd men här runt mig. Perfekt för våren/sommaren.

Deja vu, my childhood at our cottage, summer garden with tagetes, marigold, wild strawberries (lots of, from the side of a forest road) and even the nettle! Where is the extravagance tho??

This was my wedding scent 18yrs ago, so a lot of memories. Quite sharp and green, very strange on me.

Opens so musty forest floor I expected it to be a chypre. I guess that's the marigold and nettle. Dries to a dusty floral iris and some other very well blended scents. Not to my taste, but it doesn't smell like everything else either. No pink pepper or ambroxan, which are two notes I hate, and no singularly identifiable orange blossom or jasmine which are two notes I love. Not sweet despite several listed notes that hint at natural sweetness and sweetness high in the accords. Aromatic as a first accord seems right. Green as barely more dominant than the fresh/spicy also seems right, but I'd cut the size of those bars by about a third. Arms length radiation.

I will preface my review by stating that floral-greens are not usually my thing. Extravagance d'Amarige was unfortunately no different. Although it felt light and fresh, I wasn't able to pick out any specific notes, because I quickly found it headache-inducing and had to wash it off. :( I think this would be a great scent for someone who loves fresh, clean florals, though!

Fragrance Review For Extravagance D'Amarige Givenchy Top Notes: Mandarin Nettle Pink Pepper Tagetes Violet Leaves Marigold Middle Notes: Orange Blossom Strawberry Wisteria Jasmine Base Notes: Iris Sandalwood Amber Strawberry Cedar Wood If you liked Amarige this flanker should please you. It's not the same scent but it's still a very well made fruity floral fragrance. It opens with fresh citrus and a touch of pepper before going into a green but not realistic-garden scent of violet and leaves. The marigold is very prominent as the fragrance leaves behind the opening phase. The orange blossom and wisteria stand out in the middle stage. It's not as floral as the name Extravaganza should let you to believe. In fact the original Amarige is much more floral. This is still flowery but in a smaller bouquet. The iris is providing a touch of powder but I would not call this a powdery scent either. There are two notes of strawberry and naturally I could smell it. Sweet and delicious. The dry down is simply sandalwood and amber. Gorgeous, clean, fresh, simple, sweet, feminine, subtle, and easy to wear. One can wear this anywhere including work, the office, a classroom, etc. It does not smell as "mature" as Amarige and in fact it appears to be more of a youthful version of it. Very much a young lady's perfume (18 to 23) but that doesn'st mean any woman of any age including 30, 50, 80 can't wear it. Perfume is for anyone that likes how it smells. And this smells so good, beautiful but not as extravagant as I wanted it to be. I hate when the scent doesn't match up with it's name! LOL But this is still very nice. A fragrance for spring time/day time/casual wear.

In a collection of approximately 250 fragrances, Extravagance is the closest thing I have to a signature scent. I used up several bottles in the early 2000s and have been without this masterpiece for a very long time. I finally tracked some down and can’t stop reaching for it. Unlike so many 90s and 00s fragrances that have been reformulated, this came out of production before it was ruined, so the old juice that arrived is exactly as I remember it. Gorgeous, complex aromas with extraordinary longevity. This is the opposite of a linear scent - at times I smell the tagetes, marigold and mandarin, and it’s almost soapy without being aldehydic. The violet leaf and wisteria appear with the strawberry (that doesn’t smell particularly strawberry to me, perhaps like a white strawberry with a bit of sweetness), then the deep drydown is the most perfect blend of iris, sandalwood -and amber. There is something I smell from time to time several hours into the wear that is almost vanillic, a rich warm sweetness that is so beautiful. One of my favorite things is that it dries down to the sweetness on my skin while my clothes retain more of the top notes. I adore so many niche and independent fragrances but there’s something about those 90s designer fragrances (the ones with what seem like 40 notes!) that pulls me back. They’re incredible performers too!

Tried this a couple of days ago but wasn't sure and bought a Dolce & Gabbana one "Desire" which ended up giving me the migraine of all migraines. Fortunately I hadn't opened the bottle I had bought and had kept receipt. Went back to the store today and bought the 100ml EXTRA-VAGANCE D'AMARIGE which is quite lovely. It is a bit different from other perfumes I have, smells soft, floral and fresh...I can't actually pick one particular note, just the blending of all the notes together are very pleasing. Get a whiff now and then and think "that's nice!" One you could wear anytime anywhere and would not offend anyone's sinuses. Glad that it is still around. I have worn MARIAGE in the past and still have a bottle of the EDP so if I wanted to make it last longer could spritz a bit with that. Will see how long I get out of it and how it develops on my skin.

This seems to have nothing to do with the original Amarige or Amarige mariage. It does have a few things in common with the lovely Amarige d'Amour-a light, fresh, clear floral composition with good longevity. While Extravagance lasts only 3 hours or so, it has the distinction of bein =g the only scent I have ever tried that pivots around a central Wisteria note. Wisteria has a light, green, grapey smell when in bloom that is intoxicating. The Pink Pepper and citrus are barely discernable, but instead add some lift and zest to the polite florals. the Woody base with Amber is so faint that one hardly notices it-this perfume is so light that it is nearly gone befor the base has time to settle in! Nonetheless, I am enchanted by the floral composition and will continue to wear this throughout the spring.

I saw this in a shop that was clearing out all their perfumes by selling them at half price. A lot of it was old stock. I'd heard of Amarige by Givenchy when I saw this one on the shelf and I wondered what this "vagance" stuff was and why this version had an extra amount of it! It looked like it was being marketed like a washing powder: "Blamo, now with extra vagance". Weird. I didn't think too much more about it and checked out the other perfumes in the store. Later, when I got home I remembered it, looked it up here and literally laughed aloud. Next time I was passing by I stopped in and bought a bottle to use as a gift sometime, based on all the positive reviews here. OK, I've had my fun. You can all click the "thumbs down" now.

This brings back wonderful memories for me! The first time I purchased was 11 years ago in duty free at the airport in Zimbabwe. We were returning from an amazing honeymoon visiting Victoria Falls on the Zambezi River and we both fell in love with this spicy, sophisticated floral. Loved the pink pepper! Wore like a dream in our tropical climate back home and I remember people often stopped me to compliment me. An exceptional fragrance with a hip, edgy elegance to it. Staying power on me was okay, but still definitely a keeper in my book. For years I couldn’t find it anywhere, but now I will most certainly be repurchasing.

Very fresh, very green and very clean. I so love the nettle in the topnote, it smell a bit unusual. This is a not a mainstreamfragrance, it ́s not for everyone. The wild strawberrys are quite shy, but (the only thing)longlasting and the flowers blend together without one of them being dominant. Unfortunatly this is a discrete almost weak fragrance on me, I can ́t hardly notice it after about one hour... the only thing that remains is a wiff of clean and fresh soapyness, nice but not at all enough to make me love this perfume. I think it ́s more suitable for the hot summer... My husband likes it.

This perfume was on my mom's rotation next to Calvin Klein Eternity. I think she must have used it all since it's no longer in her medicine cabinet, but I hope to get my hands on a bottle because it smelled very fresh, synthetic, and elegant to me. I can't really parse the notes since it's been forever since I have had a whiff of the bottle, but I wholeheartedly agree with one of the posters that it smells like an elevated version of champagne, without the sour hoppiness. It's effervescent and fruity but not cloying and has a mature, amber note that grounds it. Sad that this is discontinued!

I'm not sure what the difference is between formulations but I have the new EDT bottle (long rectangular etc)... I bought this thinking perfect... but something about the mandarin/citrus note bothers me and sadly I can't wear it... I feel like recreating it and substituting a few things, that's how much I want to like it... it’s styled like a luxurious eau de cologne where a delicious orange citrus take centre stage (rather than lemony cologne). This is available for a swap! Nothing in common with the original by the way...
