Eau de Monsieur

Finally got my hands on this one. My first Goutal! Unfortunately the season is getting a bit cold for this but before a formal meeting, this for sure will do wonders. It sticks close to skin being an eau de cologne but it's incredibly refreshing, zesty with a lot of zing. The opening is as someone said below, an explosion of lemon and the mint helps create a cooling, sharp sensation that uplifts the senses. That's the best word for this one: uplifting. Yes, this is similar to Eau Sauvage in profile although Goutal's Eau de Monsieur is to my nose much less aggressive, much more bright and less "alpha male"/serious than the former. The profile here is definitely very classic however. It doesn't re-invent the wheel, it just does the citrus aromatic profile with undeniable skill and I wouldn't be surprised to have compliments with this one. As I said, this being a cologne it is short lived (2-3 hours and sticks closer to skin) but to me that's not the point of an eau de cologne. For the price point I got this from (120USD), this will get a lot of wear next spring and when the humid, unbearable heat of summer eventually hits next year. I dare say it beats a lot of much more expensive colognes I have in my collection. I can definitely understand the reason why the house of Goutal is well respected and I'm eager to explore more.

I just bought this eau de toilette based on love at first sniff. Actually, it reminded me instantly some classics, such as Moustache by Rochas, which unfortunately disappeared. Some classic Guerlain (think Mouchoir de Monsieur or Eau du Coq ) in it but less powdery. The lady at the shop told me it was a new release, and it surprised me because I told her it smelled so much like old classics. Actually, the only thing which was new was the packaging, which I found out on coming back home, the scent being 34 years old... Not the first time a salesman does not know what he/she is talking about, but to my surprise, I easily accepted that a perfume could at the same time be brand new and refer to old times classics. My reaction was a reason enough for me to do the fastest cologne buying I've ever made, and I really love it. I will try Eau du Sud next time,when I have finished this bottle.

I am an oriental fragrance lover and although Eau de Monsieur is not my normal style, I really love it. It's incredibly light, fresh and airy. Perfect for daytime, the office, or after the gym. I smell heaps of fresh citrus, a slight mint tang from the mint/geranium and, unlike the manufacturer's notes, I get a sweetish white musk base. I agree that longevity is not amazing, but it's an EDT and it's intended to be light, I think. Just re-apply...easy!

I really love this one, it reminds me of the very first Eau Sauvage, back in the 70's. Too bad it doesn't last long, 3-4 hours at most, with minimal sillage, yet better than Eau d'Hadrien - my second choice.

A very elegant and classic eau de toilette. Warm on summer and spring, it reminds me of Eau de Courreges and there is also a hint of Moustache by Rochas. A great fragrance that feels very clean and classy.

I really love this. A modern take on classic colognes. It smells classic without that old school vibe, if you know what i mean. Very fresh, bright, citrusy but still elegant and classy.

Perfectly inoffensive classy (though weak) citrus aromatic EdT in the style of Eau Sauvage. Like Eau Sauvage EdT, however, it’s a weak performer. Particularly on my skin, it becomes a skin scent within an hour. But it is a beautiful soft yet sparkly citrus freshie. Elegant, good quality ingredients. I prefer it to Eau Sauvage actually, although they smell almost identical to me. This is just a little more aromatic and classical, maybe a tad stronger too, I don’t know. The main issue is the price. I only have because I paid $7 for an almost-full bottle (second hand), so I’m enjoying it liberally, using it like a cologne after showers. But personally I’d never pay the $120 asking price for it new. I just think it’s too much for this kind of thing. It’s beautiful though, there’s no denying that 🍋💛

Colonia semplice, estiva,agrumata,pulita. Molto versatile. Positiva,indossabile dalla minore eta' in poi senza limiti. Buona,ma di breve durata. Monsieur?...mmhmhm.....garçon!

I must confess that I'm struggling to see much a difference between Eau de Monsieur and Eau d'Hadrien except for the speed in which they approach the dry down. I must also be fully transparent that I am trying a new formulation EdM, which - like most masculines post-2000 - suffers from the banning of oakmoss, a classic note of masculine perfumes yet to be truly replicated in a lab. Hear told that new Goutal formulations are, generally speaking, woeful. I haven't tried enough new formulations to say one way or another. The opening notes of EdM, just like EdH, are shimmering, photorealistic, juicy bergamot and lemon and a green herbaceous accord. It very, very, very quickly proceeds to the final dry down of geranium, it seems, and extraordinarily light sandalwoods and patchouli. The base notes are so light that there is almost no earthiness, spiciness, or milkiness to them at all, as if they have been sundried and refined so much with time that all that is left is a clean, shimmering, resinous quality that is so quiet it's almost musk and soap like. One side of me loves this fragrance because it's a reminder of what masculine perfumes were, could - and perhaps should - be: there's no need for heavy screeching woods and earthy notes, there is merit in a man simply smelling fresh, light, and citrusy clean. The other side of me says that EdM could be a bit more confident in getting to this point. It lacks volume, strength, and longevity even by EdT standards, as if it wants to make a contrary statement about modern masculine perfumery but it knows it's an outlier, and, lacking confidence, says its point way too meekly. Perhaps one day I will get to smell an original EdM from the 1980s that's in impeccable condition. I would very much like to. Maybe in that original formulation the message is clearer and more compelling. In this version for today, it smells the way perfume enthusiasts like myself feel about the state of modern masculine perfumery: resigned.

Not having any idea what this was going to smell like coming from a mixedbag sampler pack, I was kind of blown away by the explosion of lemon! At first I thought it to be too much, almost like floor cleaner or something, but it developed nicely within the hour. Quite nicely actually, and I'm enjoying the floral, sandlewood, and hint of mint notes melding so beautifully in the drydown (if that's in fact what I'm smelling). This is my first-ever lemon fragrance, and it seems quite unique to me. Then again I am fairly new at all of this. I can live with it not being a stronger projector; I'll keep it with my close quarters scents and travel with it for reapplications. Won't rush out for a FB, but it's going on my 'to buy' list for sure. If you like lemony scents with a soft surprise at the end you'll dig this one.

"A Morning Smile" **** I like colognes a lot. They bring me joy and mixed feelings of cheerfulness and sexiness. And also an excuse to scent myself several times along a day of summer and brightness. This one is very good, although a bit more well behaved than others - I'm thinking of you, Eau Sauvage ;)

Nice and lemony but I am a little cross. I recently splurged on this fragrance. When I opened the package, I found the atomiser had been screwed on to the bottle rather carelessly resulting in considerable evaporation, at least by 1cm, going by comparing the level in my bottle to pictures only.

Very good and natural smell but is tooooo light and longevity is a joke (about 2-3 hours with very low sillage). scent: 7/10 longevity: 2/10 sillage: 1/10

Has anyone compared this to the old vintage 'Eau de Monsieur'? It looks like the new base is WAY different- they got rid of the oakmoss!
