Mandragore Pourpre

With a name like Mandragore Pourpre, one might expect a dark, gothic, or overly mysterious perfume. However, the reality is quite different; it's a work of great subtlety. Here, the Mandragore root functions more as an idea than a raw material, resulting in a spicy, aromatic, and slightly earthy composition where bergamot, mint, and star anise provide a vibrant and refreshing opening, while black pepper introduces a dry and elegant tension from the very beginning, with a distinctly French refinement. Citrus perfumes have never been my first choice for a refreshing summer fragrance; however, Mandragore Pourpre fulfills its purpose perfectly for me. It has the luminosity and cooling effect I look for on warm days, but adds an unusual complexity that prevents it from falling into the simplicity of many summer colognes. What fascinates me most is its evolution. It begins with an almost effervescent and highly aromatic energy, but little by little the spices soften—although the mint remains recognizable for much of its development—and the composition reveals a surprisingly light base of patchouli and myrrh. It has a botanical and slightly melancholic quality, but without ever losing its elegance, making it very versatile from spring to autumn. The result is a unique and very easy-to-wear perfume. A fragrance that proves that a fresh perfume can also have depth, character, and a very defined personality. Its performance also doesn't aim to impress. The projection is moderate, and the sillage remains relatively close to the skin, which perfectly suits the introspective nature of the composition. It's a perfume for those who enjoy discovering nuances, not for those who need to be noticed.

Oh, how marvellous. This perfume is really something special. Having said this, there are some remarks to make. First does anyone know how madragora/ mandrake smells? The root is used in the classical homoeopathy. I looked it up and yes the smell of the root itself is a bit spicy-anise like. Mandragora is also a traditional love potion. In the Song of Salomon in the Bible it is told so. And the flowers of this plant are very nice coloured in a pastel blue-purple. The root itself is in the alchemy compared with the human body. And lol for all Harry Potter fans it is the first potion lesson he gets, replanting mandragora:)) Secondly the notes stated here differ from what the perfumers notes. For instance myrtle, is also in it according to the website of annick goutal. And yes there is no mandrake in it. It is a interpretation a reflection of it. Finally there are three different bottles of this perfume: one unisex, one for women and one for men. I see no difference but ok. That doesn't say anything about this top perfume. yes this is top class!!! I enjoy this minty anise like spicy tone and its longevity is great. This perfume is fresh without being citric, this perfume is uplifting without being aquatic, this perfume is balmy without being overwhelming, this perfume is aromatic without being harsh. And yes in the end it gets a floral-citric nice scent wow. And yes its a mystical perfume for all reason I addressed. When to wear? At all occasions and yes in all seasons, when you want to smell special and different. Annick Goutal is a niche brand with great class and with natural ingredients. This perfume is very special.

Mandragore Pourpre, compared to the original Mandragore, opens much darker, earthier and spicier. The bergamot and the mint are still present throughout the development. But it's no longer as green and crisp as Mandragore. The anise and the pepper turn the whole composition into another deeper colour. In the drydown, Mandragore Pourpre has a sweeter facet than the original edition. The amber and the myrhh give an oriental vibe. If sniffed closely, the heliotrope and the incense are also distinguishable. Although Mandragore Pourpre has quite a different character from the orginal Mandragore, their connection is evident: the same elements they share are embodied in the same way. Interestingly, Mandragore Pourpre has the same ethereal texture as the origianl edition even it's significantly spicer, which makes it inoffensive while keeping it stand out. The fact that it's spicer and darker, also helps to keep its strength and its vivacity, contrary to the original Mandragore which tends to fall bland in the drydown. The sillage is relatively close even sprayed liberally. The longevity is around 6 hours, which is ok for an EDT. I'd definitely recommend giving it a try. An interesting olfactory experience it shall be.

Ahhh, Mandragore Pourpre. I ordered a bottle of this magic potion based on the reviews here. What can I say. It is the essence of a certain character or spirit captured in a scent. It feels like a well hidden secret, an elixir I ingested as opposed to simply sprayed on. This fragrance is sexy, alluring and mysterious but in a decidedly non-come-hither way. It is not sporty, outgoing, flirty or fashionable. It doesn't need high heels, elaborate make-up or done hair. It's not for every day, not for a club night, not for school events, not for work. It can only be worn when the mind is set the right way and then it can be worn anywhere. Go figure. Although, I'm addicted to this brew, I'll wear it only once in a blue moon. Yes, it smells like Anis but in combination with the mint and the other herbs, it loses its overpowering aroma and becomes docile and complimentary. This scent is pretty much linear and smells on my skin exactly the way it smells in the bottle and even after 24hrs it is still noticeable.

I blind bought part of a bottle seduced by the witchy/folklore related description and unusual notes. I purchased the square bottle but this perfume really is unisex, if you want it to be. I like it. It isn't offensive, however I don't know if it would be a crowd pleaser. It is more of a perfume that you were for yourself. One aspect that surprised me most was that it is not a 'deep' or heavy smell. I was expecting a dark brew, some potion or syrup like depth but it isn't like that. It is more light, like a strong herbal tea, if it makes sense. It's spicy, and can be quite strong. On my wrist and sleeve it lasts whole day. And yet it is quite airy and fresh, not a deep and dark scent I expected. I really like it though. I get a very strong anise note which lasts throughout, some citrusy bergamot, vague mint, a little bit of geranium. It might not be a deep dark mysterious potion but it is a lovely cup or herbal tea a young witch is sipping on while she is watching her herbal garden grow.

Bought this one together with Ambre Fétiche and Encense Flamboyant. The other two are a very safe bet for me, deep and incensy, easy to love. Mandragore Pourpre was my wildcard :-). Mandragore.... makes me think of that Harry Potter scene with the screeming little root-people in the potting shed, I couldn't resist. I love it, it is spicy and fresh, more a potion than a perfume, and somewhere, on the tip of my brain, that nagging feeling that it smells like something I know. I just resprayed, and voilà, there was the name: Eau Dynamisante by Clarins. Also very much "a little delight for oneself" kind of perfume. cleansing, soothing, comforting. Like burning sage to clean your house of evil spirits. Deeply in love with it.

A magnificent dark and deeply mysterious, sensual perfume! OMG I love it. It's warm and spicy, rich and herby. Beautiful. It has a magic feel. Incense and myrrh, patchouli and heliotrope - and beautiful star anise and bergamot, and mint and pepper, oh boy, such a wonderful witchi smell! It's a magic potion, that transports me to a gothic faraway land, where cheeky sprites and goblins roam, and magic is in the air all around. It's delightful and alluring, and powerful. I adore it. My husband adores it, it's one of his favourites on me, and not only that, but I get compliments from almost everyone I come in contact with. It's truly magical! And oh I love the gorgeous bottle so much!!! It's beautiful!

When "witchy" is used to describe this fragrance and its sister, I don't think they mean scary evil witches with warts consumed by rage and hatred at a sacrificial alter... More like... Pagan Earth Mother Goddess.. like Stevie Nicks brewing a potion of wild-collected herbs, for love and healing and blessings... connecting with the spirits of plants and trees, weaving spells of enchantment into the cool night air. You have been wandering in the forest. There are bits of twigs and crushed leaves in your hair. You are not wearing the plastic, alluring scents of modern civilization: you are natural and wild and unapologetic like nature itself.

Day after day i discover how much i love anise star and how much it is convenient to my skin , after Lolita Lempica pour homme with her different shades , after Notte Bianca of Linari , i came across MP and i adored it , i have the citrussi Moandragore , but so far i prefer MP , its is softer , cosier , calmer and more romantic , i enjoy every breath i take while wearing it , it is new different presentation of anise star keeping it the king . Lately I added to my collection 3 perfumes from AG , it is nice to say , whenever you smell any be sure you will notice its from AG , the house touches are present , clear and always there .

I wouldn't say this should be associated with a predominant patchouli scent. This is a gorgeous, pristine spice blend that has its own signature. Dark, absolutely; but black pepper, star anise, and tobacco combine into a mystic masala, substantiating the bluer version of the original. Like the depths of grandma's handbag; hidden hard candies and perfumed hankies, transmuting into genderless musty vapours. If only to experience a masterpiece: sample!

When I read about this I knew I would like it and I really did. First I tried a sample to ensure that I was right and I was happy to find out that it is gorgeous. The name of the scent is so mysterious as the scent itself. Very spicy and dark in some way. Sharp bergamot at the beginning and then a lot of spices. I must admit that it is unisex, because I bought it for my husband and I love when he is wearing it, but I love wearing it too.

I have it now for 2 month and I thought it ́s really nice...but since fall started, it ́s one of my favorite perfumes and I start to looove it! ... dark, deep, mystique... I love the idea of a "wizard/witch-perfume"... although there is not really "mandragora/alraune" inside the fragrance. Some forums register it in the list of the ingredients. But not on "Annick-Goutals-Page". Pity! LOVE from LOUVE

BEAUTIFUL! Alchemy,mystery and magic are in this bottle. More powerful as sillage than Mandragore,this is more "captivating." The opening of star anise and mint is powerful.. is a great perfume that should not be missing in my collection. I can not wait to take him with me in the fall.... great scent Annick Goutal! An interesting herbal perfume that takes a while to unfold. Most pronounced is the slightly sweet star anise in this multi-faceted and sparkling blend. The ingrediënts are like witches dancing around a bonfire. Seperate entities joining hand in hand in an age-old ritual, honoring mother nature itself. This perfume is the brew that sustains them through the night.

I love Mandragore Pourpre by Annick Goutal. The anise blast at the beginning is absolutely delicious. I sprayed it on this morning and my partner asked "what are you wearing?" He loved it!! To me it smells mysterious and alluring. A softer version of her sister Mandragore which I also own.

eau de Rochas, that's what it reminded me of. and after it dries down, it's still Eau de Rochas but with some Nuit Etoilee in the background. it would work well in summer!

Sensual and fresh, compliments getter.

Green citrus spell, not so purple Mandragore Pourpre from Goutal is a fragrance that can mislead you. It is a green, very fresh, bright citrus scent, a kind of more aromatic and slightly incensy Eau Sauvage. When I bought Mandragore Pourpre I was attracted to both the name and the olfactory pyramid. Incense, myrhh, amber, geranium. I was expecting an oriental perfume, sweet, smoky, a pourpre magic spell instead I had a very fresh opening and a little peppery... It is quite linear, it does not develop much and the performances are decent. It persists on the skin for about 6-8 hours, average sillage and projects quite well in the first hour after spraying. It looks like a masculine fragrance to me, it looks like vintage Dior Eau Sauvage, very citrusy, and the pepper pops up the mint giving it a freshness that you usually look for during the summer, when the temperatures are high. The scent is a pleasant one, in the dry down that citrus scent disappears leaving a combination of rosemary, amber and incense but very difficult to pick up. For those who want it, I recommend testing it. It is less purple, more green, which does not make it less pleasant. During the summer, this perfume works very well, it is very Light, fresh, sparkle and quite Elegant. Some say that Goutal has create here a purpre fragrance for the witches, I think is more a green spell.

not sure why I chose this scent for testing, I usually do not go for spicy scents... i did not fancy that much the notes either(apart from incense) Having sprayed, it almost got me crying. Not the emotional kind though, the mint was the culprit and I thought, this is not something for me. But this fragrance was worth the effort to overcome the initial hiccups. I think this is truly magical, dark but noble still. I almost felt like I was a witch capable of creating spells. I really adore this fragrance! Why is it not for me still? Or whom I could imagine could wear it? Well, there is nothing cozy or sexy about it. I can even imagine that it would scare away men. Not because it stinks but the impression it could make. This is not a fragrance that is saying 'come on, let s socialize' or 'I am a warm person to make friends with'. This is very confident, beautiful but it has some cold, distance keeping intent. I would only wear it if I wanted to provide a message 'keep away from me, I might be dangerous'

Very natural and woody smelling fragrance.Even though this is spicy it is never heavy an can be worn comfortably in the summer. You can definately detect a lack of synthetic ingredients and I appreciate this as some of the more modern fragrances,although they are popular and friends say the smell great,give me a headache.Mandragore pourpre NEVER has this effect. In my opinion,as I have fairly dry skin it needs to be re applied after about 3hrs. This is no hardship as I enjoy the smell and intend to use the whole bottle which I rarely do with others without getting bored of then. With ref to another reviewer's opinion that there is a similarity to eau de Rochas, I see where they are going but to me eau de Rochas is more of a straightforward lasting summer cologne with a patchouli vibe.P.S I love that one too!!

This fragrance is all about the NATURAL. I feel like I am adorned with mint leaves, lavendar petals, and lemon balm, and perhaps I am walking through the woods and cracking branches under my feet, while I look for magical roots to make an herbal concoction. The scent swirls and mixes as you wear it, Okay, it's maybe not that mystical, but it's mostly a herbal/citrus/woody cologne. I even detect a hint of vanilla in the base. Despite the (beautiful) dark packaging, this actually is mostly suited for hot summer weather. Sillage wears extremely close, ~4 hour lasting power. Additionally, the biggest difference b/t this an the original is that MP does not have a prominent iris note.

Mandragore is a mixture of light citrus with a blend of herbs that remind me of a cloved orange lite. Mandragore Pourpre adds a bit of incense to the mix and makes it magical, and is my favorite of the two. The problem is you have to bathe in this stuff for it to project on a late summer day, and then it's over in about 30 minutes. I'm almost angry that a perfume company with fair renown would produce a fragrance so necessarily wasteful. Would I buy it? Possibly, because it's an enchanting fragrance suitable to daytime use in the desert, and there are some decent prices out there. I might begrudge the purchase when I go through a bottle in a few weeks though.

Really interesting! Spicy opening, then gets almost soapy, very clean, but not aldehyde soapy- like fresh hand made herbal soap. Reminds me of the smell of bathing in the cold river with 'Camp Suds' biodegradable soap. I dig it. ;) It is odd, but compelling, and I ended up buying it just for the memories it evokes. I love this interpretation of mint as well. I have owned Nuit Etoille EDT and EDP and gave up on both, for being too much like chewing gum. This mint is woody and witchy. I also prefer this to original Mandragore. That one is lighter, and somehow comes across and sharper and more aromatic, but has less grounding.

A sweet fresh breath of air blown in from a dewy herb garden. Smells unique and at the same time familiar. This reminds me of a cross between Oriza LeGrande Foin Fraichement Coupe and something like 2787 Wandervogel. Very naturalistic, light, easy to wear and unisex. All the notes blend together here completely to create the impression of young, fresh plants glowing with health in a sunrise tinged garden. There’s no particular note that stands out and nothing discordant. And it lasts a good while for this type of herby and restrained perfume, about 6-7 hours on skin.

Mandragore Pourpre opens up with a mix of spices, especially rosmery. It's mysterious, I feel like I'm in an old apothecary lab. In the drydown it becomes more sweet and floral. Despite what I read in other reviews to me it's a very feminine scent. It would be perfect for a witch to wear. It's not too strong and unfortunately the longevity is not so good, it lasted on me only three hours. Definitely to try.

There is certainly a similarity between Mandragore and Mandragore Pourpre, particularly in the drydown. The opening of MP is definitely deeper, more earthy and rich. However, I found that as the fragrance developped, it was, on my skin, very similar to Mandragore. While I enjoy the differences in the opening, and find MP a more complex scent, there is not sufficient difference for me to own both.

Very good scent and too similar to the original. This is more earthy and a little more dark with a prominent patchouli note. Anyway still very fresh and natural. If you are a Mandragore fan, you must try this. Longevity and sillage are moderate-low. scent: 7/10 longevity: 4/10 sillage: 3/10

I really like this one. To me it is spicy and beautiful. And strong, I think just a spray on each wrist is more than enough. Not sure when or where to wear it though. It is definitely a keeper.

On my skin, the top three notes of MANDRAGORE POURPRE announce themselves clearly. The combination of the bergamot, mint and star anise create a fresh and herbal aroma. As the frag settles, the citrusy mint steps forward, sidestepping the anise, and mingles briefly with the pepper accord. This beautiful combination then transforms, interestingly, into a Barbasol shaving cream scent. For me, this stage is so reminiscent of my father, when I was a little girl, and I would kiss his face after his morning shave. . . Very, very pleasant. I believe it is the addition of rosemary and amber that makes this interesting note. The EDT lasts close to six hours on my skin and by the time it dries down, the initial herbal fresh fragrance has completely transformed into a syrupy, warm heliotrope with a strong emphasis on an almond-y vanilla aroma which is both inviting and comforting. A very unique scent. . .definitely worth a try.

I am happy I waited a long time (throughout the day) to review this one! A few hours make a whole lot of difference! Mandragore Pourpre grew on me, it really did...especially when my husband returned home several hours after I applied it and said "VIOLETS...I smell flowers and violets." Who would have thunk? Someone on another perfume review website summed this fragrance up with "Dies before it gets started!" And YES...that was my INITIAL impression. But oh no...surprise surprise. So, I waited with eager anticipation for this one to arrive in the mail. Happily spritzed on a generous application from a large-ish 2 ml sample. And then I waited some more. Opening notes of STRONG anise and BLACK pepper...not pink peppercorns...black pepper immediately emerged upon application! Strong anise, black licorice & black peppercorn definitely dominate the opening. Okay. But wait I did...and within 10-15 minutes, the perfume seemed to settle down onto my skin as I anticipated the emerging mid-notes, base notes and dry-down. This IS a pretty fragrance and yes, it IS hard to describe...perhaps because while there SEEMS to be a whole lot of nothing going on, there IS a lot of subtlety occurring. Unfortunately, I found the mid-notes to be somewhat harsh & unpleasant...not my favorite part of the application. The mid-notes struck me as dirty, earthy and nearly animalic...dirt & moss...little green and lots of dirt. Is this perhaps the much referred to and nondescript aroma (smell) of the elusive Mandrake Root (mandragore)? The dry-down, which takes at least 30-60 minutes is where this fragrance literally blossoms. Ditto to what others have stated. Not at all perfumy or "BIG," Mandragore Pourpre landed as a soft, powdery, peppery, slightly dirty anise fragrance with faded floral notes. Definitely subtle, the fragrance wears very close to the skin. As "happyscent" stated, I did detect wafts of this 'n that throughout the morning; however not one single not ever seems to dominate this fragrance (after the opening). Unfortunate for me, I never detected base notes of patchouli, nor did I ever note frankincense or incense or smoke of any kind. Still undecided about this one. More WITCH than GOTHIC, this is a pleasant, very unique interesting fragrance. I can definitely see how this might become someone's "signature" scent.

I blind bought the original Mandragore and was on the fence with it for awhile, but finally grew to really like it. Although it starts off orange and bitter, it softly projects a complex herbal mix that always draws compliments for me. As my bottle got low, I saw Mandragora Poupre for a deal on eBay and got it. I thought a second blind buy was worth the risk as much as I like the original and since Poupre was supposed to be a more intense version. Sad to say I'm disappointed. I don't find Poupre more intense at all and in fact I find it missing somethng. This is simply anise, mint and bergamont and nothing else and it def falls flat compared to the original. If you like to original, do not blind by Poupre, stick with what you know.

Smells like minty and citrusy cleaning product. Hippy-like. Like a bathbomb from Lush.

There is a nice bit in Chandler Burr's The Perfect Scent, his Ellena centric book on the perfume industry, where he shows off Jean-Claude in the garb of the magician. Trick one involves wafting together two dips or touches, one in a chamomile smelling molecule, the other in ethyl vanillin that smells as the name indicates of vanilla, and voila: Chocolate feels the air! No magician is worth his worth without a second trick so vanillin returns, this time joined with cinnamon, orange, lime essences and wow! Coca-cola. Whenever I spray Goutal's Mandragore Pourpre, which I love like so many of the house's frags, I recall this anecdote with pleasure. Because, Poupre, unlike the original, much rootier Mandragore, when combined with my own chemistry (the final, unavoidable touche) has very little to say about any one of its constituting elements on its own. Yes, the anis is briefly signaled at the opening, making the connection to the earlier Mandragore explicit but greener from the mint. So is the bright, slightly startling black pepper. But, really, if you're looking for anis undiluted you're better off with Guerlain's Aqua Allegoria Anisia Bella or, if you want it sweeter, Lolita Lempicka. I'm hardly the first to mention it, Mandragore Pourpre is above all, fittingly for a scent that claims the purple mantle, a violet sonata. This is not to be clear the brooding violet of, say, Serge Lutens or of Lalique's Hommage a L'Homme. Nor is it the rather gourmand note you find in Nagel's Eau de Cartier Concentrée, once you pass the yuzu. No, this is an ethereal, ozonic violet. A unique masterpiece.

I own the original Mandragore and to be completely honest, some days I like it, some days I don't. The sharp citrus notes are often too much for me, however with the release of Mandragore Pourpre, I've come to enjoy the composition minus the stinging citrus. Like flannelman mentioned, 'Mandragore Pourpre is richer and warmer' than the original. I find it much more masculine and mystical as well. Opening with delectable mint and licoricey anise, with a touch of pepper, Mandragore Pourpre has me impressed. The composition tends to be a lot darker and ultimately richer. The blend of geranium, incense and patchouli is wonderfully unique and tastefully done. In some instances I feel as if this could be the Winter version of Mandragore, however upon further thought, in my opinion this is just an improved and more complex version. The lasting strength and sillage is good, yet not overpowering or particularly strong. As some have already mentioned, the longevity is much improved, yet it is still relatively weak. I get a thick, syrupy espresso note for some reason, noticeably in the drydown, which eludes me. Perhaps it is just me that smells this, however I do believe it is what makes me like this fragrance so much.

Bright and ethereal to start, Mandragore Poupre feels purple but also feels green, with its star anise resonant, bursting off the skin like the star burst asterisk seed pods, exalted by the sizzle of black pepper and underpinned by a fresh mint leaf accord. It feels a bit mysterious by design, much like the peculiar, anthropomorphic mandrake plant for which it pays homage. Rosemary sprigs fold into a heart that feels like ivy leaves and violet leaves, bittersweet green and crunchy, with a mauve mystery of heliotrope and myrrh, sweet and bitter waltzing into the dry down. Its sparkle persists for a good few hours, impressive for something that feels fundamentally top-note, but yet there is nothing in this dry down that nags and screeches (nothing of the sort is found in any Goutals). The patchouli here is sheer rather than plangent; in fact nothing here is necessarily melancholy. While elusive, this fragrance has a buoyancy to it. Mandragore Poupre may seem a bit aloof for those who need a heavy load of stuff in their fragrance, but for those who can lean into nuance, those who can mindfully observe their fragrance with their nosies, this one will surely be a delight.

I tried this based on all the wonderful reviews here and to quench my thirst for different perfumes. Annick Goutal always a house I can count on to be different. I must say i was worried about the anise b/c i really despise all things related to black licorice, star anise being the most easily tolerated for me, but still anise all the same. What engaged me to purchase is that I love mint in fragrances if it's done properly and here...the mint is a luxury aromatherapy mint, not in your face, but what is that soothing spa smell? oh yeah, that's mint. Opening is a blast of pepper, which I love, citrus and geranium. Yes, it has relation to orange verge by hermes but it is far less citrus. The rosemary gives the clean herbal note which comes through in the body. I have yet to reach dry down but was so excited I had to share. Buying a bottle in 2 minutes. Thanks reviewers for yet another great find. edit: tried this on a friend of mine and she loved it on herself, but i preferred it on myself, on her it went kind of stinky old ladyish, so this is a must try with your own chemistry.

Just got this in my collection and here are my first impressions : There is a clear signature that I find back in all Goutal's perfumes and it's this ethereal aspect of them all, she has a way in creating these soft herbal natural smelling perfumes and this one is no exception. It seems that there are lot's of natural oils mixed in this perfume so the mint in the beginning gives it this fresh opening but there is a sweetness linked to it, it must be the star-anise that gives it this bonbon like odor and I'm here for it. Goutal's creations are what I would catalogue more in the vain of classical perfume creations, where every note are beautifully measured and blended so that they morph into each other to create a symphony of new scent molecules that gives us perfume notes that are soft and elegant. Yes, that's it, this perfume oozes class, finesse and sofistication. It does not scream, is't a room filler but wraps the wearer in this vail of refinement and elegance. So here are my first impressions and I already know that I'll love this one for sure. To be continued ...

its a perfume fit to be used by both women and men.. and in my honest opinion.. i believe it should have been pour home..its so natural.. fresh.. a bit of the old washing soap used as cubes from natural oils to wash cloths with..or some green spicy mix of faint accords.. its almost similar to khourous by ysl for men.. when i spray it i was taken back to my dads smell ..there is something serene ..simple.. yet invigorating.. as the morning mist..it smells like mist.. like some sort of mastic.. resins.. or luban.. and white musk ..it smells like cologne ..its aromatic..there are notes of myrtle.. black pepper.. which make it more tantalizing.. enriched with heliotrope.. in a soft bed of patchouli..which ads sensuality and a hint of hyppines vibe edt perfume ratting 3.8 out 5 bottle ratting 4.2 out 5 my personal liking rating 3 .2 out 5

This hidden and underrated gem is my number 1 pick this fall and winter, if I want to smell like Dracula and a wizard. It has great projection and longevity. This is for me, gothic, dark and haunting, in a very good way. Quite minty, woody and warm spicy at the beginning then becomes mild soapy and soft piney in the middle. This and the dry down is the best part for me. The scent journey is mesmerizing. I do not find this much of a compliment getter but more of self pleasure. I imagine a beautiful red haired vampire on a long white gown, sitting alone, late night, on a quiet foggy road; waiting for her prey. Highly recommended for fall and winter, in and outdoor. Very unique scent and this vampire will definitely smell divine.

I’ve got samples for Mandragore and Mandragore Pourpre, and I did some comparison test for these two perfumes. In common: the two are both natural herbal fragrances (I think most of Annick Goutal’s works are like this), smalls like cool woodland or a fresh meadow. If you’re a lover of natural scents, give it a try. The longevity of both are moderate, they do not last more than 3 hours on me in summer days. The difference: Both are good herbal scents with only slight difference, Pourpre is spicier and woodier, the original is fresher and has a more citrusy beginning. I personally prefer the original one. I think it’s good enough to enjoy both samples from them, and I won’t buy for the very high pricing.

Compared to Mandragore (which I enjoy) Mandragore Pourpre is richer and warmer, making it ideal for colder weather. The first minute is an intense blast of pepper and mint, with bergamot gradually increasing but less intense than in Mandragore. Next up is a very pleasant but fleeting rosemary note, soon joined then replaced by warm ginger and star anise – these two notes, as in the original Mandragore, are the most prominent on my skin. The anise is particularly lovely. We're then off to a patchouli/incense base with more caracter than Mandragore's (which is just lightly woody). Really good and unusual, and a thumbs up from me. Very good longevity, moderate but noticeable sillage.

Not a very good scent profile in my opinion. I was intrested in it because I like mint notes. The mint in this is really weak and indeed it's not really a "mint fragrance". In fact, many notes I'm drawn to and like to see in combination, like star anise and pepper, are weakly represented in this fragrance. I agree with the slight feminine lean of this. I like other mint fragrances like Diptyque Eau de Minthe, Creed Virgin Island Water, Viking, any of the Drakkar Noir DNA fragrances, and others. But I'll pass on this one. And no, this smells nothing like Chanel Platinum Egoiste (lol).

Stronger Mandragore. Not like the edp version though, or just like another flanker - Pourpre is noticeably different, its own fragrance. Very unique, spicy, even sexy, if you're into this sort of herbal sultriness. Neither feminine nor masculine, but it's not light either to me. Not heavy either, just different from the original I was used to. I don't own it but I wouldn't say no to it. I recommended it to a friend who wanted a unique, different fragrance, and she loves it. I find it to be a unique and pleasant spicy herbal concoction. Perfume for a good witch.

An overcast morning today - a perfect fit for the weather is one of my favorites - Mandragore Pourpre The anise blast wakes you up to a day of mystery where something is a foot. A rustle, a strong breeze sweeps you by and you smell of smoky incense. The fragrance is very subtle, you get wifts on the most unexpected times. Is it magical?, probably not, but you get a sensual fragrance, mysterious and a little bit distant throughout the day. Perfect scent for an adventure Original, Unique and definitely recommended.

My sister thought she ordered the original one but was sent the Pourpre version and didn't like it so she gave it to me. Hey, it's unisex so I accepted it. I agree with what another reviewer said, reminds me of Concentre d'Orange Verte by Hetmes.

When it calms down I feel the slight rosemary and myrhh the most. Aromatic scent, strong from rosemary and myrhh, and warm-sweet from amber and geranium (if geranium and amber can be sweet, but versus rosemary and myrhh are milder).

The beginning reminds me of Woman by Ormonde Jayne. Later on it becomes more floral and sweet... I tested it during summer, but I believe it cane be very enjoyable during winter - when we all need something cozy to warm us :)

very masculine, I like it at first sniff, I think don't go to heavy. but wonderful aroma..really enjoying this one, will have to spend some more time with it.thumbs up

What a shame....dies before it gets started. Would be a pretty nice frag if longevity weren't non-existent. :(
