Vanille Charnelle

Bale of Vetiver Hay Soaked in Vanilla Custard Update 9/25/22 My bottle is more than half gone now so I really know this fragrance. I’d describe it as a bale of vetiver hay soaked in vanilla. VERY similar to Annick Goutal Vanille Exquise, especially at the start. This is only a mildly gourmand vanilla, which is to say it is NOT like vanilla extract AT ALL. This is the type of vanilla-themed fragrance that doesn’t smell much like a basic vanilla extract type but has a strong mid-base of vanilla with other oriental spices, woods & herbs enveloping the vanilla. In this category of vanilla-themed orientals I’d list fragrances like YSL Manifesto L’Elixir, Guerlain Angelique Noire and MFK Gentle Fluidity Gold. This is an abstract perfumey oriental vanilla. In fact, it smells more like an herbal Tonka in an almondy-vanilla-woody way. I think what others are describing as smoky is the note that seems like vetiver on me. It does pull smoky-herbal in the base (almost to the point of a light, light touch of oud - and I hate oud but this is the woody-herbal base). The vetiver in the base really pulls this in a darker, more textured herbal direction making this not strongly gourmand on me. The vanilla and tonka accords are delightfully airy and subtly sweet but the base pulls the whole affair into being an earthy sort of sweet fragrance. I have Vanille Exquise (airier & more almonds with that strong angelica ribbon) as well as Nuit et Confidences (sweeter and more boozy blonde fresh tobacco). I love the way Goutal does these airy vanilla orientals. Vanille Charnelle is another sophisticated airy vanilla oriental for those of us who might not like straight up gourmands. I definitely need to own all three. These are vanilla themed fragrances for fragrance nerds. ;-) Excellent longevity with mostly low projection on me. Definitely sufficient if you spray on clothes. Smells a bit different on fabric vs skin (on fabric it smells more gourmand like marshmallows and custard after a few hours). 10/10 absolutely gorgeous, I love it. PS: the more I wear this, the more smitten I become. this is airy yet luscious. it’s in my top 3 vanillas of all time.

Not very charnelle (carnal) per se, but such a treat for any vanilla junkie. Smooth woody smoky, strong, thick, creamy vanilla. Slight aromatic undertone + the woodiness is a tad oud-y (not pronouncedly so). I don't see anything in common with ALAMBAR which is another winter favourite of mine. Neither does VC remind me of HYPNOTIC POISON, apart from the dense texture and sweetness, and, probably, the contrast between sweet and smoky (which was the thing in the older formulation of HP). Again, nothing carnal or animalic, just a little bit darker than the usual sweet vanilla. Will easily fit both genders. Wonderful sillage and longevity. Non-edible woody gourmand made with great finesse. I don't get any strangeness, dirtiness, yolks or else, from this one. Still, not a "girly" type of vanilla, I recommend to try before you buy. Also it's strong, I wouldn't wear it to work and/or closed office cubicles. A smell to put on for a winter walk through the city, or to relax at home after rough days. It has a therapeutic quality, in my opinion. For those who love vanilla and aren't afraid of woods, oud, smoke and spice, - put in a very balanced, refined way. It smells undoubtedly luxurious, the quality is certainly there.

I get a custardy, sweet but spiced vanilla. But yet, it's not cloying or too sweet. It's a wonderful vanilla for those of us who don't want to smell just like McCormick extract (all the time). At first, it's pretty much spiced (cinnamon to my nose) vanilla and a bit of woodiness (from the tonka?). It moves into a more floral, spiced vanilla after about 45 minutes on me and the floral is subtle, soft and pleasant but present. The cinnamon vibe is still there but the woodiness has gone to the background. To ME, it pretty much stayed that way the rest of the time it lasted (6-8 hours) but can still smell it 10 hours later if I hold my arm to my nose. I don't really care for a scent I love, as I do this one, to change over and over as long as I like the notes I am getting. This is a hard love. I have a lot of vanilla fragrances in my wardrobe but this is in the top two or three.

This is one of the best vanilla scents I ever had. It is a linear fragrance easy to understand, the main thins that you can smell in it are: smoke, tonka, vanilla. Even tho it is so simple , it is a complete stunner, the quality of the vanille absolut they use can be easily identified as superior compared to other synthetic vanillas. It lasts amazingly on the skin for around 24 H and the projection is around 1 meter but persistent throughout the wartime and it leaves a trail behind. Unfortunately it was discontinued with the change to Gutal witch I think is quite sad as this was, in my point, one of their best compositions, now most of the things this house has a pretty dull and with a very weak performance. I would highly advise all you vanilla lovers to snatch a bottle for yourselves as it is harder and harder to find.

Wow. This is the very first time I am trying any perfume from Annik Goutal brand and I must say I absolutely love this perfume. It is the perfect balance of being sweet, aromatic and floral. As a 45 year old female living in a hot climate, I like how I feel when I inhale this scent on me. It’s very comforting and pleasant to my senses. For a blind buy that I pulled the trigger on my gut feeling that it would be good and not smell like food, I am extremely pleased. The sillage is close range but the longevity is good. This is one of those perfumes I call “SCENTS FOR ME” because you don’t care if others can smell it on you from afar. You have to be up close and personal. I have just being spraying four spritzs so I don’t know what happens if I overspray. I will definitely buy this again. 💛💜💛💜

This has to be a favourite vanilla, simply due to the custardy flavour. Yes, I get the eggy references but not scrambled eggs, so much as egg custard, and smoky poddy vanilla, rather than icing sugar. I was undecided at first, then found I was craving it, like a food. So now I have 2 bottles! Whether you like this, will depend on whether you might eat one of those superb French custardy confections they do so well. If carnal means "of the flesh", this does satisfy my sense of taste as well as smell. It's not a blind buy, but you may find yourself hooked, like I was. It's quite strong but like all Goutals, not shouty, more refined. If you like vanillas, you should try this, at least twice. It stays on fabric for months. And zero calories :) x

Mmmmm! Vanille Charnelle smells just like eggnog and flan, with a large dose of black pepper and an aromatic-woodsy (vetiver maybe?) and ambery undercurrent. Yes, it is eggy, but not in a gross way; this is fairly edible, like a pastry, with enough inedible notes to keep it from being gourmand. Still, Vanille Charnelle is a vivid, atmospheric scent. It is a unique vanilla-centric fragrance and I have not encountered anything quite similar, even among indie brands. I have enjoyed wearing it very much this Christmas season, but I think Vanille Charnelle will still work well the rest of the year. The sillage is conservative, but Vanille Charnelle lasts and lasts, giving me gentle puffs of scent for many hours.

Not overly sweet, and I get oddly a popcorn note initially. I am also reminded of immortelle. But most of all, this is a buttery fragrance. Very, very, very buttery. I especially like the way my clothes smell the next day. But I doubt this would be everyone's cup of tea. It has a slight weirdness to it. Update: I think the weirdness factor is declining to my nose and I'm really falling for this one. The more I wear it, the better it smells. The drydown is actually better than the opening, because you get more of that tonka notepopping through and it's warm and cozy. Granted, this was an expensive purchase, but it is such a unique addition to my collection and I am happy to own a bottle.

I really like this. I can see the Hypnotic Poison comparison, they have a similar kind of "texture"....that dry but delicately powdered swishy almond texture. Love the ylang ylang with the vanilla, it has a light and fluffy, but not insipid feel. This fragrance is very bright, effervescent even. Wonderful, but not worth the price.

Gorgeous, rich vanilla opening with an aromatic undertone. There's a fresh, almost fruity herbaceous note that reminds me strongly of Amouage Jubilation for men. Juicy and refreshing surrounded by a soft, balsamic cloud. My only complaint is that the sillage and longevity could be a bit better. Refined without being stuffy.

A gorgeous vanilla pod type of vanilla with just the right touch of incense and a tiny bit of oud. It is sweet but not gourmand. Very much of a sexy grown up vanilla fragrance. It is an absolute concentration. It feels very luxurious! Very expensive but I may start saving for it.

The first time I tried this I really liked it. Maybe because we are approaching Spring, it has possibly begun to smell out of place? It leans very Christmas candle on me currently. I do get the vanilla front and center, and a review below mine got it right that this does have a bit of a "egg custard" note to it. I would imagine it's like a smoked caramel custard. When I tested it previously I got just a nice vanilla + smoky tonka beans. This time it is creamy flan. I would expect this to come out of a soap/candle company's lineup, but not a renowned niche house, and what's considered their "exclusive" line on top of that. I would not pay more than $50 for this scent, and I don't think I could wear it for many occasions other than Christmas. Performance was also not nearly as good as I'd expect. It was just average. Longevity a notch higher, but no noticeable projection to speak of. It certainly isn't filling any room I've been in. Maybe I'll try it again in winter, and see if my opinion changes. But right now it's just a solid like, and move on.

a very dry sweet vanilla that is a little marshmallowy and very smokey. A smoked vanilla bean with pepper that made me sneeze twice and some musk. NOTHING like Vanille Exquise or Nuit et Confidences, which I also own, other than the fact they all are vanillic fragrances. Gourmand and pretty. Not a toothache.

This is one of rare vanilla scents that I don't like,it's strange because all of notes(exept vetiver)are my favorites,I also can't see similarities with hypnotic poison(which is creamy almondy vanilla with fruity undertone,reminding root beer in it's drydown)except they are both vanilla dominant Vanilla is not very sweet here,it's not gourmand or creamy.not even powdered raw vanilla,it's vanilla plant so there is a herbal undertone which is more detectable in drydown when vetiver also shows up,no surprise I dislike it.herbal,aromatic scents are not my thing Opening part is tolerable for me,peppery,almost oily ylangylang which is followed by some smokey vanilla-tonka in the heart,but drydown is too woody/aromatic/green/herbal and I really don't like this face of my beloved vanilla,but it's unique,a different vanilla fragrance,is mature and I prefer it on men It's not warm enough to make a good winter scent so I think best season for it is fall,it's also wearable in chilly springs or summers,longevity is decent but sillage which is good at first soon reduces to moderate ❤❤ Edit:find out that very green,herbal phase is the heart not drydown,drydown is less herbal on me with a very dominant coconut,this coconut milk makes it nicer for me,now I can see it's comparison with hypnotic poison,coconuty vanilla

From my point of view as a gourmand lover Vanille Charnelle isn't sweet at all. The dry down is both custardy vanilla and sharply aromatic. The combination of vanilla, tonka and ylang ylang is beautiful! The aromatic dry-down is a deal breaker for me, though, since I find it very overpowering and sour (is it the vetiver?). Then again, my skin amplifies those kinds of notes. Longevity is very good and sillage moderate to high. Gourmand lovers might not like Vanille Charnelle, but those who want a grown up, unisex vanilla should give it a try!

Vanille Chamelle Less good than Vanille Exquise, the higher concentration doesn't bring anything to the perfume, the price...yes this price, because it seems there is too many rich arabian prince with no olfactive sensibility for the moment in the world.

Tried it yesterday at Liberty London...what ruins this beautiful vanilla is that terrible incense smell and the price. Such a shame.

coconut vanilla, sorry but this is so fake and cheap that you'd thought it's a teanager perfume instead of a 200+ euro of work.

You can really smell that it's fake vanilla. Bit disappointed.

This perfume has such great potential. Most of it is a joy to sniff. Like "finally, a heavy enough vanilla to satisfy even the biggest vanilla fanatic". Great ideea, and it's really close. Unfortunately, it has a dreadful yolk smell thru all the stages. I tried to ignore it, but it's quite strong, like someone is making scrambled eggs in your perfume. Pity.

It's a dark, deep and not-so-sweet vanilla. It's quite strong during the first few minutes, it has a resinous vibe and it dries down nicely on the spicy side. I bought this after testing because the dry down is absolutely addictive, I love getting whiffs of this lovely, warm, spiced vanilla.

Woody vanilla. At first it feels sexy but after a while it feels like smoked vanilla. Its sweet, milky. A nice vanilla, a bit dirty vanilla scent.

Most amazing Vanille I've ever experienced. Smells like a lemon-y vanilla cake. Far better than Sublime Vanille by Creed.

-Synthetic. -Dries down to a messy floral blend that rakes the nose. -Not fbw. (-)
