Cabaret Pour Homme

Hard to find but worth seeking out,Ebay can be good. Cabaret Pour Homme is a dry,dusty powdery fragrance with hints of fruit & spicy woods. I wouldn't describe it as an Oriental fragrance but it does fall in to the Fougere category quite easily. The opening top notes are very crisp & clean,there is a deeper sweet note too,maybe the pineapple? The middle and very lasting notes lull you into memories of a traditional barber shop,with crisp almost medicinal lavender & lily-of-the valley. The base notes have a deep warmth which lasts for hours,the tonka bean & oakmoss being very identifiable. I do agree with most other reviewers when they say this is a fragrance for an older man, (I would suggest mature & refined),but really when you get a top quality scent like this.Surely it's for anyone to make their own mind up. At the time of writing this review,Dior has just released "Sauvage" which smells very similar.So maybe the old fashioned barber shop scent is making a come-back? I have worn CBH for years & I always get compliments. It's very hard to find now,so I keep it for special occasions. But it's worth looking on Ebay for bargains.I found a coffret on offer for less than £20 with 50ml EDT & 200ml shower gel. This fragrance has excellent longevity with a good but subtle projection. Would I buy it again? Most definitley ! I love the ruby red,ribbed glass flask like bottle,very stylish,an homage to Art Deco. For longevity- 8/10. For projection/sillage 7/10.

This a very interesting, well composed (pierre bourdon) fragrance. My initial thoughts (review later) are this does in fact smell like drakkar noir. I respectfully disagree with the review below saying it smells like Tsar. Im usually the first one to disagree when people generalize about old school frags since thats my thing...but nah its totally fair to say theres similarities. By no means whatsoever is this a clone, and its more that theyre both a certain kind of fougere that have other relatives. Instead of the big dihydromercanol dose like DN, cabaret actually goes more the tom ford anthracite route, reminding me of the "concrete" aspect of that but not as intense as in the TF NA. I actually wonder if pierre was trying to out-drakkar-noir drakkar noir lol, i think there is a quote about him saying he wanted to make a "new kind of freshness" after D.N. released, which led to Green Irish Tweed. It performs allright...just allright so far. Maybe with air in the bottle now it will come alive more. P.s. really suprised nobody else thought this smells kinda like RL Safari...i think it might smell more like that than Pasha de Cartier. Also i dunno about this being the precursor to the pineapple note in aventus, they seem different...although its true that bourdon taught herault and then herault created aventus so... P.s. to be honest, i think this pineapple note smells more like pineapple than aventus. Hot take maybe? You decide lol.

This one was a surprise. I was researching Pierre Bourdon and the origins of Creed Aventus and I stumbled upon this perfume as being one of (but not the) original mens perfumes featuring pineapple, which turns out was a signature ingredient of Bourdons and lends heavily to the theory that either he or his protege were the real nose behind Aventus. So I have not worn Drakkar since I was in highschool in the 1990’s. My interest was in buying this was as a reference perfume and for the outrageously beautiful bottle (which I’ve come to realize is higher quality than one would expect). Consistent with what others have said below, this one opens very similar to Drakkar - notwithstanding has been 25 years since I’ve worn it, I would know that smell a mile off. However, within 2 to 3 minutes you experience the most dramatic change where the perfume pivots into the mid - and a bright aromatic pineapple-based Fougere presents itself. As someone said below, this certainly feels like the blueprint for Aventus. It is a modern version of Drakkar with pineapple mixed in, blended very well so that it wears extremely smooth. So, my curiosity has resulted in me owning a very fine, criminally underrated, and sadly forgotten beautiful pineapple Fougere. If you can find it for a reasonable price I would say go for it. Edit: Two back up bottles on order.

Very masculine, long-lasting fragrance that strikes me more as a woody musk than oriental fougere. The sillage hums with sophistication with the understated elegance of bespoke clothing. The opening is almost watery in a cool forest air fashion - I think that's the juniper berries lightened by pineapple. The floral mid notes rise quickly and blend with the herbs in the top notes, almost as if there's no middle. But the real treasure is in the drydown. Ah, oakmoss, vetiver & wormwood bitterness warmed by tonka and spiced up by cloves & patchouli with musk pulsing through like a beating heart. Very, very nice indeed. Nosed by the great Pierre Bourdon, my fragrance guru. The photo doesn't do the bottle justice. It's actually quite handsome with its "bakelite" top and thin profile. The red ribs in the glass feel good to hold, as would, I think, any man classy enough to wear this. I wear it on days when I want to waken my inner Wonder Woman.

Some good, accurate comments that I agree with on this one already. A clean, beautiful, grown-up, complex, sophisticated scent with subtlety and some floral notes. Some feminine feeling notes but gently masculine throughout. Very natural smelling. Seems to gently evolve. Sweet but not too sweet. Gently woody and musky. Feels like a happy scent to me. Subtle but projects well for at least 4 or 5 hours. Still smells clearly at 7 hours with a little bit of projection. Still on my skin at 11 hours. Not got many subtle, complex fragrances that last as well as this without ever being too loud or sharp. This would suit cooler weather and more formal or professional situations but you could wear it anytime. Well worth a try.

This is a lovely convergence of new and classic fougere DNA. We have that once ubiquitous wormwood note harkening back to stalwart fougeres of yore, but there is the juniper and pineapple that would foreshadow the hype machines of today, except they are mixed in with a careful hand (applause to Pierre Bourdon). I am thoroughly enjoying this and it would get frequent wears if it were not for the fact that it has been discontinued. And I agree with others that the marvelous garishness of the bottle is so loveable.

Yes, it may remind you of Drakkar but this baby has a life of its own. It's nice and balmy and may give you a "wear-me-in-winter-only" vibe like it does me but some gents out there might be able to pull it off at other times of year. It is not cheap smelling and it will not let you down if you wish to be taken seriously or get attention. To some folks out there it may come across as an older gent's scent so you younger men may be better off sampling or buying a miniature before jumping in.

@palebluemoon Well brother, at least to my nose it has smth slightly similar to drakkar! but the terrible moment is when they mentioned "Land Of Warriors The Vagabond Prince" is similar to drakkar! OMG ZERO resemblance, i wonder what happens sometimes!

Stunning perfume, it's like more modern and more sensual Drakkar Noir. If you like classic fragrance but with a modern touch this is for you. Also I love beautiful red bottle, so unique. Too bad it's discontinued.

I wouldn't mind soak myself up in this sexy juice . So warm and sensual scent . Negative side is the short life and poor projection . Wish if i can find the same fragrance with stronger sillage and longevity .

Pasha EDT/ Jazz / Tsar.... I love them all, but they are like brothers to each other. Cabaret is their cousin. Not smoky, but a little sweeter and softer. Basically the modern version of those mentioned.

Absolute 10/10 fragrance. If you enjoy classic fragrance, this will probably be atop your peak. So underrated, it’s sick. This is a magnum opus.

This one, just like the Molinard Homme II, is also a sweet oriental for men, not soo deep as the Molinard, but quite elegant for sure!

A not so bad looking guy, with a great personality, wearing this scent could be really irresistible!

Wow, I've been waiting with much anticipation to test this one. It opens up with bergamot and mild, ground spices. Those, and a sharp whif of the cool air that surrounds you when you come in from a walk in the snow. It makes me feel clean straight away. It is not too citric or swamped in aldehydes, but just right for now. Comfortable and reminiscent of Guerlain's Vetiver (old formulation). After about 10 minutes an odd and unevenly balanced duo of sweet juniper and dry powder clears the stage of contesters. I get a lot of YSL Jazz here, while not as deep, sweet and balmy, but it is there. Lily-of-the-Valley turns up but keeps in the background, bridging the sweet juniper and powdery lavender. Half an hour into the drydown, and the juniper reaches its peak. 1 hour in, and it's on retreat. The lavender is gone, while Lily-of-the-Valley and the balm seem all the more dominant. For the first 10 minutes sillage was about moderate, but keeps within a foot now, after 11⁄2 hours. I'm starting to be afraid that this exotic promise will instead turn into a short fare in the amusement park. 2 hours in and a hint of bergamot blends in with a vague YSL Jazz. Nothing but this. That's ok. I used to like Jazz and rediscovered today why that is. While the ingredients put into YSL Jazz were of a better quality, it was too heavy, and I'm happy to have found elements of it represented in a somewhat more dynamic fragrance. Just wish the drydown would strech for a bit longer. Now you know my rating for sillage and longevity will be poor, so I won't let you know. Instead I would like to underline what an intriguing, non-offensive and versatile fragrance this is. It could litterally be a pick-up pheromone as well as a scent for a meeting in the bank or shaking hands with the pope. Optimally you should try it... at least once, to know what it's all about. If you happen to dislike it, don't worry: It'll go away soon enough. Or so I thought! It slowly dies down, not changing much while it does, but stays close to the skin until the 7th hour. Very pleasant indeed.

Fairly nice, slightly vintage scent. I guess this could be considered a "Modern Fougere". I became interested in it because its another example of Pierre Bourdon using pineapple, previous to his disciple Jean-Christoph Herault using pineapple in Creed Aventus. The scents, however, are completely different. Ferre for Men by Gianfranco Ferre in 2006 is yet another example of Bourdon's use of pineapple (I have this one), as well as Canali Men by Canali (2005), Courtesan by Worth (2006), GF Ferre Bluemusk by Gianfranco Ferre (2007), Indomptee by Lulu Castagnette (2005), Ambre Topkapi by MDCI Parfums (2003) (I have this one), of course Individuel by Montblanc in 2003, and even 1992's Joop! Nightflight, and some others. Its almost a given that Herault learned use of the pineapple note from his mentor, Bourdon. Drakkar Noir is an obvious comparison to Cabaret, especially on test blotter, but on skin, Cabaret diverges. There is a bit of an accord that is sort of a "neighbor" to being metallic, without being outright metallic, and since I'm sensitive to metallic accords (like in Platinum Egoiste), it does bother me just a bit. But not too much. Overall its a nice scent profile.

Let me first say I bought this blind. I really, really enjoy this fragrance, but primarily the drydown. On first spray, the opening is okay. However, for the first hour quickly afterwards, it smells... a little sour. Maybe it's my skin chemistry. There's definitely some of that old school masculine vibe you get from something like Drakkar Noir... but there's something a little funky and sour. Almost vinegar-y but others around me say they don't really get that, so it might just be my nose. After that first hour, though, the sourness fades away into this mysterious muskiness that... man, I have a ton of fragrances, and nothing can really compare to. It's, in my humble opinion, a really nice and unique scent. I love it. I'll say, as a 26/27 year old male, it's funky. While I dig this kind of funky, I realize that many won't really reach for this kind of frag. The opening is DEFINITELY not for everyone; like, I'm almost hesitant to put it on because I think about that opening and I'd rather go with something else. But eh — I'll throw it into the mix when I feel like a little bit of a changeup.

Quite underrated, although hardly groundbreaking. Somewhere between a textbook lavender/juniper/leather fougere a la Drakkar Noir and a coriander/sandalwood aromatic such as RL Safari or Cartier Pasha. Think of it as a much better Caesar’s Man, or a not-as-good Givenchy Xeryus, and you will get the picture. Cabaret Homme possesses the baseline quality level you would expect from a Gres fragrance; so, I cannot see it disappoint anybody, even the seasoned aficionado, from a quality perspective. Disappointment, if it happens, would follow from a perceived lack of originality and “wow factor”. Obviously, the more you are familiar with the above listed fragrances, the more likely such a disappointment. For me the one thing that sets it apart from any of the others listed above is a “just right” amount of spiciness, which neither overwhelms, nor gets lost among other aspects/notes. This would be a great buy at $15-$20 for a 50ml or $20-$30 for a 100ml bottle, but at the current (Summer 2017) prices ($60 and up), it is not a competitive buy; especially if you are buying blind.

First impressions. Tsar, Is it you? Actually, after spraying them side by side, it's easy to see the differences. Tsar is woodier, mossier, greener. Cabaret is sweeter, fresher and a bit muskier. In the opening is also kinda similar to Individuel, which came out at the same time. And the Lenged comparisons are not far off too. But if you spray this on yourself, Tsar is what came to mind. On papper, or up close, you will get the Individuel/legend associations. Really nice, but a bit old school for the time. That's probably why it was discontinued. If you want a fresh sporty, slightly fruity fougère, in the lines of Tsar, this is the way to go. It's much more affordable and a bit more modern due to the freshness and fruity compounds. Overall, nice scent. Bourdon did better in Individuel in my opinion. And that's why that one is praised and still available. BTW, this is not similar to Drakkar Noir. Unless you don't know any of the ones i've mentioned, maybe that is a good scent profile to compare to, otherwise, they are very different

The comparisons to Drakkar Noir are fair. It's a smoother, sweeter, toned-down version of Drakkar Noir. It starts out strong, fresh spicy and green. As it dries down, the tonka bean shines which gives it a sweet creaminess. Don't look for beast-mode 80s-90s style powerhouse longevity, however. Starts off with a roar...then goes down to a purr. Classic fougere profile. Easily a signature scent. Very pleasant, elegant, and masculine. EDIT: I changed my ranking from "male" to "more male" because even though this leans masculine, I feel some women can pull this off as well. If you're a woman and sick of the flowery, sweet, headache-inducing stuff on the current market, try a toned-down fougere like this. Guarantee you'll stand out and smell great!

Bought it blind - a sudden impulse provoked by a memory of some evil woman who used to wear ladies' Cabaret - floral, fruity, playful. Cabaret Pour Homme is completely different - woody-spicy, dry, with a hint of martini. It took time to adjust myself to this fragrance. Now I can say I like it - it has an individuality unlike so many modern colognes, it's non-offensive so you can wear it everywhere, it's promising without being vulgar. Longevity and sillage are moderate. Better to use with a matching bath/shower gel.

Discovered this upon a suggestion by a very experienced member here. It is very floral, making me think of a real Cabaret, full of frivolity and joy and strong feminine signals. I love the pineapple note, it gives a carnal note in this jasmine-lavender-lily of the valley bouquet, like just a bit of sweat. It's a Cabaret, remember ? not your aunts flower garden. Very sensual and - to my surprise - a 100% male scent.

The journey from fruity to woody leather is kind of magical. A slim fragrance, but worth the few moments of ecstasy. The bottle is handsomely garish. Love.

"Life is a cabaret, old chum - Come to the cabaret!" Now this is a fougere I can enjoy! The fougere accord is obvious, but unlike so many others, it is counterbalanced very well. There is the pineapple and some woody type quality, along with florals that are mild but seem to really help to soften things up. This is what I expect a designer scent to do, that is, take an accord that is often handled in a harsh way (I'm looking at you, Drakkar Noir!) and surround it with other notes to balance and smooth it out. I don't view this as similar to Rive Gauche Pour Homme, other than the fact that they are both smoother fougeres, but this is even smoother than RGPH, and it's got pineapple rather than anise (the anise and fougere accord thing doesn't work that well for me, because both tend to be too strong). One might also view this as the fougere version of Aventus (if Aventus had been released first), though this comes across as smoother and more natural-smelling. I think the claims about lack of strength may be due to less (if any) dihydromyrcenol used in this one, as opposed to some of the other, simialr ones. If you want a simpler, cheaper, and soapier fougere you could go for Lomani, and if you a more complex (and again, soapier/cheaper) fougere you can go with Sung Homme. I'm glad I bought two of these when I had the chance, because I want to keep at least one bottle. "What good is sitting alone in your room? Come hear the music play..." And splash on some Cabaret !

The opening is very similar to Drakkar indeed. But where this beauty differs is how well constructed the notes are. You'll notice this more and more as it continues to dry down. Some synthetics remain from its original counter part, but the art of balance and blending is used so elegantly here and with smooth precision. Its no mistake, Pierre Bourdon is the nose behind this delicate reincarnation of Drakkar. Its more herbal, and more playful while retaining its shine of elegance. Don't judge this fragrance simply by its opening, judge it as a whole to appreciate and witness the art of perfumery. The dry down ends up smelling nothing like Drakkar, it becomes its own thing entirely. I love it.

Oh why almost all great "male" fragrances have these beautiful juniper berries and "womans" mostly do not have them?.. They make the juice so soft-woody and full of beautiful reflexion and focus! Thats how cool men used to smell 10 years ago - wormwood and basil,rosemary and lavender, you wish to spend a life with your nose buried into a shoulder which smelled of Cabaret...so manly it smelled, would imagine Rhett Butler (Clark Gable) in Gone With The Wind, that smelled like that, gentleman AND evil, all in one... sigh

I always fancied trying this fragrance then I got the oppurtunity to get 8 bottles for £12 ! I couldnt believe my luck ! It was a blind buy and I'ts definately one of my favourites ! Yeah I can see that some people may find this fragance a little 'dated' I prefer the word 'refined' . Really well made fragrance with good staying power . I will enjoy this for years to come :)

I revisited this one This is the original review... "Very similar to Drakkar Noir, with some differences on the mid and base notes only the wearer can smell. Edit: the dry down is really good." This is really complex, far more than Drakar - hours after application, and without any intrusiveness, I can get whiffs of notes that are completely unrelated to the top notes.

For me it doesn't smell anything like YSL Jazz. It is a more pleasant version of MontBlanc Legend, I think it is the pineapple and juniper combination, without the metalic feel. I try hard to get other notes but I can't. Perhaps it will be a good change for hot casual evenings outdoor setting.

Uhm... Reading its composition, it sounds like an interesting fragrance that I would like to try - despite its cheap looking bottle and packaging... Italo's review was obviously translated using some online translating tool, and it's a bit difficult for me to understand. Has anyone tried this?
