État de Grace

So, i stumbled across this perfume randomly. Upon finding about this and the rave reviews I decided to buy it! It is very affordable and people were saying amazing things about it. It arrived today. First things first, it doesn't travel well, so if you buy it, get a small atomizer for travelling purposes because this big bottle slowly leaks if laid down. Because it had leaked a bit in the package, as soon as I unwrapped I get a big whiff of amber and patchouli. It scared me for a moment there, I was hoping for an ambery cinnamon, like the reviews had said. Imediatelly, I went for a spritz. Okay, NOW I get it. Caramelised cinnamon, it smells rich, expensive, sweet, decadent. It's a very mature scent, if you are into more youthfull perfumes, this is not for you. État de Grace is a very vintage composition in a way, but somehow modern too. Very "rich lady-esque" but I can imagine a very sexy man wearing it as well (I might have to spray some on my partner). When I really get my nose on my wrist I get the rosemary and violet, but overall it's a cloud of amber and cinnamon. I'll have to see how it wears over the course of the day. I have a feeling the patchouli will show its claws, just like it did in the box. For now, this is worth all the rave reviews. What a beautiful perfume. Past, present and future all captured in a little affordable gem. Just, don't store it laid down or travel with it!

Etat de Grace is my favourite in the Les Signés de Gres-trio. It's one of the best woodsy ambers I smelled in recent years and it easily competes with many of the more expensive ambers on the market, whether we are talking mainstream or niche. It's a fairly light amber, but with warmth in abundance. It starts off with an intriguing mix of rosemary and cinnamon that makes it aromatic and spicy at the same time. I don't get much rose from this, but more occasional wafts of violet paired with the cinnamon with the violets being both sweet and powdery without being cloying. Dry down is balmy, super-cosy and huggable and it has some tobacco facets from the labdanum but not like the smoky or overtly sweet ones. it's more like smelling actual pipe tobacco straight from the jar or tin, where it's kept. Etat de Grace is extremely versatile and equally suitable for cosying up with your significant other, shopping with your friends or long walks in nature. It's the sort of scent you live in, more than just wear. Once again the price/quality-ratio is excellent and considering how long it lasts, it's an amazing budget buy for the colder seasons.

my first ever perfume ! my favourite scent is rosemary so i wanted a scent that had that but was a little more sophisticated than just wearing essential oil. for someone who's never bought perfume before, the price of this was really attractive. so heres what it smells like: i get warmth from the cinnamon but not too spicy, combined with the rose and violet its really nice and smooth rather than sharp. the rosemary definitely stands out on top its so lovely, but its got a lovely warm base to keep it grounded. definitely aromatic, like a warm rustic kitchen that uses woodfire stoves. it really smells like when u put lightly charred rosemary in a cocktail, probably something with a spiced whisky. the smell makes me feel super grounded, like laying on the grass taking a nap in the sun. love it. edit: over time the rosemary fades to the backgroumd and the rose really comes out. they kinda swap places. its quite pretty

A balanced, aromatic cinnamon-amber fragrance that isn't syrupy or overly sweet. Opens light with rosemary and cinnamon in a slightly cologne-like burst. The suggestion of rosemary adds a bit of a mentholated effect, evoking the energy of an overcast morning spent in an evergreen forest. During the drydown, it sweetens and becomes a primarily cinnamon-amber fragrance. A pleasant powdery violet note emerges occasionally. Although I wish the notes were slightly deeper and more intense, particularly in the opening, the drydown is addictive and long-lasting. It lingered on my skin for well over ten hours. This would have been phenomenal with some incense or smoke for extra depth, but it is a lovely fragrance as it is with a slightly thick, powdery vintage style to it.

Fab blind buy! Have been on a bit of a Maison Grès haul since buy a bottle of Cabotine for nostalgias sake. (Amazing floral BTW!) This is a great fragrance that smells waaay more expensive than it is! Wonderful spicy, pepper notes. The rosemary and bergamot cut through and gives it a niche, expensive feel. I don't get much rose, which is good because I'm not a huge rose fan (so don't let that put you off if you're not keen on that note.) Totally unisex. Just a well balanced, great fragrance.

A very elegant French perfume. A bit old fashioned but very classy and classy sexy. It's amber with a sweetness but definitely feminine, in my opinion at least. Projection and silage are above average if sprayed generously. The perfume is cheap in price not in quality. Parfum Gres has excellent cheapies with high quality. I love the house of Gres. Cabotine, Cabochard, Etat de Grace, Madame Gres, Goddess Hommage Greta Garbot, Folie Douce, Grain de Folie. I have them all.

Fabulous stuff. My bottle arrived today, and right out of the gate it's just huge. A cross between an old school fragrance and a huge hippie-pass-me-that-hash-pipe-let's-go-to-the-Rennaisance-Faire perfume oil. All of it from an old French perfume house, and at a price that would have been considered cheap ($35 from Amazon) in the 1960's era. I'll add to this little review when I calm down and/or think I can analyze the full effects better.

This is one of my favourite unisex witch scents, I fell in love with it at first spray. Smells active, the cinnamon makes it lively and fresh, the base notes give it warmth, depth and sweetness. It's an enby witch in great shape, fit and mysterious with kind eyes gleaming of mischief, ready for anything. It's the ace of wands tarot card, the call of an adventure, the morning Sun

One of the best velvety amber scents I ́ve ever tried. Warm and cozy woody amber. Initially spicy, with the aroma of roasted nuts. Then it becomes sweeter, resinous honey. The finish is dominated by cinnamon notes. I would say this fragrance is not for everyone, very personal and not very trendy. Longevity on skin up to 6-7 hours. Great job, Gres :)

Wow! I'll confess that I was not expecting much but this really blew me away. For the price, I was expecting a really cheap synthetic smelling fragrance but I actually got a very nice sheer, airy amber with a slight incense note. It almost smells like Roja Dove's Enigma but spicier. Really really nice guys. I got mine for 35.00 on Amazon. 9/10

One spray only, and people could smell it a few feet away. Rich, spicy and intriguing, fit for a sophisticated woman or man. Amazing quality and great value. I don't get any patchouli or flowers in this. @meama has no clue about what this special perfume is about.

Very good fragrance but more masculine than feminine for my taste. It was a blind buy but I don't regret it: I gave it to my husband and I will be happy to smell it on him. By the way, I do love the name: “State of grace”.

A warm, cozy, sweet suede amber in the drydown. But the path to get there is not so linear! The first spray is fresh and almost harsh. Masculine and metallic. Green with rosemary (seems more vetiver to me!) and wood. Very balsamic at the beginning. But then the good part appears! After a few minutes a smooth, leathery suede (similar to Daim Blond) emerges; suede is not mentioned in the notes but this is very present. And then ... the amber. It's a warm, soft rounded amber. Caramelized. A hint of cinnamon, very delicate, and you have to be attentive to detect it! Spices are there but never play the main role. You get the vapors - just the smell- of a good rum or cognac glass warmed in your hands. Not the alchool but the flavours. Delicious. The drydown will accompany you during long hours and it is cozy, warm, cuddly, vanillic and leathery at the same time. Conjures images of an evening in front of the fireplace with your loved one and a glass of quality booze. Winter fragrance with smooth sillage (it's not a bomb) but proper longevity. Etat de Grace is a truly beautiful perfume, that i recommend you get as it can be found at very reasonable prices for an outstanding quality. It may not be the most original fragrance (you have smelled similar frags before) but it's worth having in your wardrobe. Similar frags: Vanille, Ambre, Vanille Patchouli all by Molinard. Daim Blond, Ambre Sultan by SL, Ambre Impérial by VC&A. Spiritueuse Double Vanille by Guerlain. (Not similar at all to Prada Amber - i used to wear that one 15 years ago and definitely not similar even if they share notes in common).

Why aren't perfume forums full of people raving about this and the other perfumes in this Gres collection? They're inexpensive, come in gorgeous bottles and are really likable and unusual (they would make a stunning gift, actually!) This one is herbal and warming, almost like a "herbal cough-medicine but make it stylish" type opening and the rosemary is prominent, then TONS of cinnamon, but not in an overly gourmand way because there's no sweetness going on really, then a sort of warm floral base that to me smells "classic French perfumerie" and is a rich mix of amber, rose, luscious violet and just a tiny bit of patchouli. A likable winter warmer in sharp weather, and very unisex. Definitely suitable for a wide variety of ages too, definitely not "young", but a young person could pull this off without it being overpowering at all as it's quite well balanced and does not slap you overly in the face as some mature perfumes can! If Montale put this in a can and called it "Winter Woodland" then I reckon people would be all over this - it really does smell like a scene off a Christmas card in a lot of ways, or as others have said, it's also evocative of some kind of warming libation by a fireside. Very nice stuff and under-rated.

I can not believe my nose!! I hoped it would be good, but this blew me away! It is soooo smooth it's unbelievable. Only a very brief opening where the top notes may fool you as to where this is going, but I also love that burst of rosemary that unfortunately does not last. Then Labdanum..! Tons of it! It is joined by a very smooth amber and plenty of cinnamon with a backing of patchouli. There is a touch of sweetness and probably a good dose of vanilla in the amber base. All of it is blended in a way that makes it very warm and soft, not harsh or overwhelming in any way. I am not a huge fan of rose, but I can deal with the proportions they come in here Get it while you can! Ps: AL8 is right. This is bigger than I thought. I totally overapplied Update: in time I have found Etat de Grace to be quite overwhelming, I have to make sure I don't spray close to my face. It is so gorgeous though. My mom had allowed my son a spray of this and I just couldn't stop sniffing him. I could smell that 1 spray surprisingly well and what a cozy, warm scent this is! Seems the men are missing out on this one? I would have loved to have a man who wore this 😍

Let me try to tell you how this perfume is. At first spray, it is very balsamic, the olfactory reference I have is copaiba balm... not really a smell you want on you, so I was afraid at this point. As it dries down, it gets similar to Chopard`s Casmir, and Calvin Klein`s Secret Obsession. It is THAT balsamic-spicy! This is one of those perfumes that you can`t smell much when you spray, they will grow bigger on you with time and body heat. Be careful not to over do it and bring the sneezes to work (sorry Alison). It gets sweeter at the end. It projected about 3 hours on my skin, then gets close to the skin. I didn`t got patchouli (sad), but the cinnamon, rose and amber are there. I would say there is some pepper in it, and nutmeg or cardamom too... At the very end, I got wafts of Calvin Klein One Shock for him. Hope these references help.

État de Grace is pleasant, comforting, very well done, high value, and a bit static and uninteresting. I find Suki more dynamic and evolving, although État de Grace has a nicer base. Speaking of the base, this seamlessly blended, reined in character might lend well to blending, using État de Grace as a reliable long-lasting, lovely base. I just want something more interesting to kick it off. Any aromatics might do, or a fleeting rose fragrance. The molecules in the base seem familiar to me - they are the kind that last forever on fabric until it is washed. Recommended, particularly for those with smaller collections of fragrances.

This beautiful warm round fragrance sounds identically to the discontinued "Ambre & Santal" (La de Grasse series) by L'Occitane. No wonder, the creator of both fragrances is Karine Dubreuil-Sereni. It is also very close to "Ambre" (Les classiques de L`ocvitane) from the same brand. This one by Gres is more quiet, but the composition is gorgeous. Gem for the amber lovers.

Super elegant, sophisticated aroma, with that smoky touch that permeates everything, giving that sacred/mystic faint reminiscence, like the incense used in churches. (perhaps because of the mixture of rosemary, cinnamon and labdanum) but this little one has become a "must have" (permanent) within my collection 🤩🤩🤩

One of the best bang for your buck scent! Lovely unisex fragrance and stunning bottle. Opens up ambry, sweet, cinnamon and dries down to a nice floral, ambry, slightly aromatic fragrance. In the same ball park as MFK Grand Soir or a little bit like YSL Tuxedo. Really nice quality scent. Worth sampling.

Dustily cool rosemary-violet accord leads to a most bright & spicy amber rose combo. A bit challenging at first, but give it time to bloom and is shines so beautifully. Projects very strongly off my skin, it's going on 8 hours now and it's still very present. Best suited for autumn & winter months.

Warm cinnamon Ambra. I wonder for a long time what is so familiar to me in this fragrance? Well, this reminds me of the muted and simpler Givenchy Organza Indecence. Beautiful scent, stays close to the skin, but lasts commendably. Excellent for the price, over sprayed I would say even delicious!

On my skin I get most Cinnamon, Amber & Labdanum and some soft Rose. Spicy and really, really... really nice! A hint of Obsession Calvin Klein I think this is a total unisex-scent but without any typical male-notes. I find it spicy, cinnamon'y and amberwarm. A scent for crisp cold days in fall/winter-time, with a ghostly vibe from the 80's. A good bargin - Grès have some really nice parfumes.

A very good and high quality one. It's addictive. It smells quite close to Ambre Sultan by Serge Lutens. Really like it a lot and highly recommended. It was a blind buy and I thought it would be more feminine and would give it to my girlfriend. But it indeed is more masculine and I decided to keep it to myself 😁.

It's a great fragrance if you like amber, it reminds me of Obsession by Calvin Klein but without the civet notes that put me off. I'm surprised to not see others mention the similarities and if you look at the main accords they share many notes.

not everyone’s cup of tea - it’s not spices for spice lovers... instead, it gives me the vibe of old-fashioned perfumed talcum powder overbearing rather than powerful, certainly persistent in my case it’s a hard pass for the suffocating soapy facet, but a great value though if you’re into ambery soap and talcum

Smells cheap...and by saying that i mean yes it costs nothing but you will get what you pay for...nothing. A good composition of mediocre cheap notes unable to hide the reality, an unpleasant chemical smell, a buttery melting plastic amber... run away!

Etat de Grace is a very interesting amber fragrance that really doesn't comply with the notes stated here. At first spray, it has an extremely medicinal, bitter herb odor that is somewhat off putting (I attribute that to the rosemary) but it dissipates quickly and takes on an almost oudlike quality. At no time is there any rose presence which disappoints me as I am a consummate rose lover. I realized that it is necessary to be patient with this somewhat quirky fragrance because all of a sudden whatever I found to be a bit unsavory disappears and Etat de Grace takes on an almost syrupy and sweet amber loveliness. If the cinnamon contributes to this I cannot say. I smell no patchouli whatsoever. Perhaps a bit of labdanum which imparts a bit of earthiness. If I could guess at notes I would imagine there being tonka and benzoin instead. Because it's so reasonably priced I feel it is worth purchasing just to experience how this enigmatic, high quality fragrance may unfold with each wearer's chemistry.

The immediate opening is a disconcerting mix of sour, sharp bergamot and an extremely camphoric rosemary alongside something that reminds me of old rosin (for waxing stringed instruments). At the same time as these powerful first notes, I am also getting some of the labdanum, plus a powdery-type sandalwood feel--or rather, it's probably cinnamon and labdanum. Shortly after the top notes evaporate, I actually get coffee. Cinnamon is fairly prominent. I agree with people mentioning cognac or the like--that's the only sweetness I detect. Very unisex. Something comforting in it, like a cozy spot in the attic where it's old and dusty but clean or harmless, something familiar and loved. It's basically dry. I'm not getting much patchouli, nor is it sweetly ambery on me. Not large projection, but it envelops the wearer and anyone who hugs me. I got lots of hugs wearing this. People want to snuggle in closer. Encourages contemplation. It's quiet and grounding.

A nice, warm, cozy, slightly spicy amber perfume, without any harshness. The opening is strong though, with the rosemary, bergamott and cinnamon. The labdanum gives a hint of smokyness in the drydown. The whole composition is so well made, no single note seems to be prominent, they are very well blended. Instead of rose, I smell vanilla though. Nice everyday scent for the winter. For me, it could be 'richer', I miss some woodyness, or some more ingredients, a bit of a complexity. Regarding the performance, it could be better... It has to be re-applied every now and then. But for its pricetag, it is okay. The juice in the bottle is much darker than on the picture, it is dark amber colour, like some rum. Scent: 7/10 Versatility: 9/10 Uniqueness: 6/10 Sillage: 6/10 Longevity: 6,5/10

Bonjour, Dans ma quête de remplacement de mon parfum favori Lancaster eau de toilette concentrée qui est discontinué malheureusement j'ai fait l'acquisition d'Etat de grâce. Quel nom charmant ! Après la première pulvérisation sur moi la cannelle et l'ambre sont reines. Je ne perçois pas du tout de fleurs. Cette fragrance est définitivement unisexe et pourrait être l'enfant de Pi de Givenchy et de Organza indescence ( selon moi ;) ) . Assez linéaire il évolue peu sur ma peau. Je ne retrouve pas la complexité de l'eau de toilette concentrée mais c'est un parfum que je porterai avec plaisir. Ce n'est pas un coup de foudre. Je poursuis donc ma quête parfumée...

Nostalgia in a bottle; there's a 90s vibe to it. Elegant. Sweet. Resinous. I'm thinking about a wealthy woman walking across the Fifth Avenue in New York. It's winter and she's wearing leather thigh-high boots that are click-clacking on the concrete. She's wearing a warm F/W '89 Vivienne Westwood coat. In one hand she holds a cup of hot coffee in her leather gloves with a fur trim. The lid of the coffee has mauve-colored stains of her lipstick. Anyway lmao it's vaguely reminiscent of Organza and somehow Dolce Vita and Femininité du Bois. Can't wait to try this out when it's colder out.

Thank god for westfield beauty base for stocking these and saving me a bunch of blind buy heartache. I've seen these hyped up recently and compared to some pretty prestigious ambers so naturally I was tempted. Glad I came to sniff around first. Burst of strong alcohol in the opening followed by a very faint whisper of some amber. Nice but very weak and meh. Dont expect grand soir quality despite comparisons this is maybe a tenth in power and depth. Nice sure for 15£ but nowhere near niche quality. Just a touch vintage no strong herbs or amber for that matter. Easy pass for me.

UPDATE: Ok. I'm really into this frag. The more I wear it, the better I like it. And, miracle of miracles, it LASTS. Well done, Gres. The notes pyramid and the comments on Fragrantica - not to mention the very reasonable price it was going for online - decided me to try this scent. It's a nice comforting scent. On me it's a bit musky, although musk is not listed among the notes. Musky scents are not my thing. But this is very wearable. To me it's the perfume equivalent of a soft cahsmere sweater. In short, I like it very much.

Very interesting. I ordered all three pieces of this collection blind, they seemed so promising. First spray I was shocked by the similarity to my beloved Ambre Gris by Balmain. There is no replacement for that, but this scent is really quite lovely. The strength seems pretty restrained, but for this price one can spray as much as needed without worry. A comforting warm embrace / ambrece, hehe. The kitchen spice melting with the buttery accord works beautifully with the amber.

Like a slightly more ambery, less-metallic/fruity Prada Amber, with light dusty cinnamon. The thick, syrupy amber in Etat de Grace quiets down after a couple hours and here is where it smells near identical to Prada Amber, to me at least. I hate rose and do not detect any here. Lasts long and one spray performs well. Great price too

Gently ambery hug, this scent hug you and care about you. That's how I feel it. Beautiful winter scent, unisex and reminds me sometimes on expensive cigars. But there is not tobacco in notes, however highly recommending

For my nose, very close to Legend, Michael Jordan and in the same family as C.K. Obsession. L= 6-8 hours, P = moderate. Unisex. For 15 E, a very good perfume. Stylish glass, cheap lid. Overall, 7.5/10. Worth trying!

Think of the best amber you know. This can stand toe to to against whatever you just thought of. Insanely good, especially for the price.

Pure cake. Cake that is nice and baked by someone you really like from work. Too sweet for me but cake is great

Soft, sweet, feminine Amber. Longlasting and so comforting like a cashmere blanket. Percet for fall.
