Homme de Gres

Now this fragrance harks back to another time in structure and is nothing like what you would find on the shelves today. No sugary sweetness here! After a few sprays upon the skin the scent smells quite harsh with bitter herbal lemony citrus notes. But the beauty of this fragrance is how in opens up and takes you on a olfactory journey. Wait twenty minutes and the scent starts to unfurl and soften with the introduction of lavender and jasmine floral notes. This starts to make the scent more aromatic as slowly the bitter herbal citrus melds with the lavender and floral notes on a underlying bed of leather. Eventually the herbal mossy lemony citrus starts to fade and the floral jasmine notes start to come through more and the scent starts to become more woody. So you can smell a lovely herbal floral woody scent on a leathery base. Quite beautiful (reminds me a bit of Carons third man scent). The scent is beautifully crafted in how the different notes are introduced and then meld together quite beautiful. Every-time you sniff the scent you are picking up a new different aspect. I am impressed how all these different notes all come together to create a alluring beautiful scent. I get several hours of longevity and the basenotes seem to linger on the skin for ages where modern fragrances they just seem to disappear.

A luxurious and complex green chypre that smelled to me like a cross between Cabochard (by the same house) and Givenchy III. Both those other fragrances are marketed to women, while this, as the name suggests, is for men, which just shows how futile it is to assign gender for perfume combinations (I would consider all three of these scents unisex). The peach note is much less evident than in Givenchy III, but it is certainly here and adds just the nicest touch of sweetness to the entire accord. Basil is much more commonly put with orange than with lemon in perfumery, so this adds a nice surprise; and I swear I smell leather at the base (though it is not in the note pyramid). This is the sort of rich and heady fragrance I just love to smell on myself even when I'm alone at home. At the same time, it's versatile enough--and not so indolic--that you can wear it to the office. If you like green leather chypres, this is one of the best there is for men, and although it's been apparently discontinued, you can find good deals on it on the Internet.

Unfortunately Gres fragrances don't get the recognition that they should!! I own Cabernet de Homme and now I finally picked up Homme de Gres. There both unquie covering a wide range from spring into late fall. Homme de Gres has an exquisite aroma of citrus notes and a herbal undertones creating a monster of a fragrance. The lemon note is subtle yet it has a very sophisticated complex aroma with a fine blend of voliet and woodsy notes. Longevity and Silage are both very high lasting over 6hrs during the summer. Finally thoughts, This juice is far better than what's in the market today. I really enjoy the opening notes of citrus notes with a pronounced herbal voilet aromatic scent making luxurious. To bad this frag isn't sold in the stores. Highly recommended if you want something a citrusy/herbal blend. 8.5/10

Here's another stunning masterpiece that has been sadly discontinued. The citrus is bright, basil crisp. petitgrain verdant and shining, neroli is natural, jasmine nuanced. While moderately better, I find that it is the olfactory equivalent of the refreshing bitters that are imbibed in the Mediterranean, a treat for the sense, a palate cleanser in a world of excessive fatty sweetness. Reviewer JFrater makes some great observations at some of the sophisticated elements included in its composition, including pyralone in the sultry base, an aromatic tobacco/leather aromachem, and the inclusion of some animalic tones that become more apparent as it continues to dry down. Lest we mention the generous dose of oakmoss which harmonizes it all ingeniously. What a knockout. 10/10.

In the same vein as Loewe Pour Homme, vintage Gucci Pour Homme, vintage Eau Savuage, YSL Pour Homme and so on. Lemon, basil, lavender, moss and woods are the main players. A scent profile thats been done over and over again yet to me this is the overall better and smoother one. The petitgrain and peach combo here is bitterly delicious and I just love the labdanum/benzion blend and lemony woodsy dry down. Also - though different scents, Gres shares a subtle herbal similarity with 1872, but Gres leans Mediterranean and old fashioned whereas 1872 is more of a modern fougere. Anyhow, I can't imagine spring without this gem. Fantastic elegant stuff.

A simple but beautiful classic citrus-green aromatic fragrance. Fresh basil and petitgrain are the main players, with a subtle support of labdanum, and a noticeable smoky (but not bitter) oakmoss in the base. Performance is just moderate, as expected for a citrus fragrance. It comes very close to Armani Eau pour Homme, and shares similarities with several others in that style (ELdO Je Suis Un Homme, Versace L'Homme, MH Terre de Bois, Loewe pour Homme and so on...) Not unique for sure, that said, it is possibly one of the most fine tuned and elegant ones. Beautiful. Have I already said it? Warmer days, 30+

Hommes de Gres is fantastic, unique, & completely masculine: bitter citric & herbal top; citrus, woody & leathery dry-down. A really comforting, happy, natural, totally self-assured scent that is great for the office, just after the gym, or for a night on the town. Good projection & sillage. Compliments a-plenty. One of my all-time favorites. And, no - it's not a "contemporary" scent, but more a classic one. I'm so disappointed it's been discontinued! (I don't detect any peach, btw...) Update: I was wrong - there IS definitely peach in this. Wonderful!

@Jack Hunter 's review is perfect, IMO. This is a very enjoyable olfactory journey where it is possible to sense everything in the pyramid almost sequentially (as if you were walking through a wooded herb and flower garden). As he notes, there is Lavender here, although it is not shown in the pyramid. In fact, the Lavender and Jasmine are both quite prominent for a time and are just lovely - although this is just one facet of a very well designed fragrance. Very pleased to have this.

I'm surprised at the lack of reviews. Perhaps this is fairly unknown? I agree that this is a dry citric fragrance, and quite herbal. I haven't smelled anything quite like it, and it's one of my favourites. Perfect for all seasons. Longevity is good, I'd say 6 - 8 hours, and sillage is also good (not overpowering). A great scent if you're in a relaxed mood. I'm always relaxed so I use it quite often. Highly recommended.

A citrusy-herbal-woody fragrance. Excellent in my mind! It smells wonderful (mostly masculine I would say). It is 'fresh' and at the same time provides body to the scent. It also changes a bit over time, starting citrusy, continuing into herbal with tarragon...perhaps.. and then into woody territory. Reminds me of some Guerlain, but still distinct. It has quite good sillage and last for a long time.

Herbal and I love it. It is a beautiful scent and lasts forever on me. Fresh, summery and perfect for the Miami heat. I went to the post office this morning and was asked by a young woman what I was wearing. She had never heard of it, and said she would buy it for her boyfriend. I sprayed 3 times only, neck and wrists. So the projection is first class. I will be wearing it very often.

A masterpiece! I finally figured out what this reminds me of, airplane wet wipes you get with the meal! Dry sour citrusy oakmoss with no sweat notes, classy, meditative and balanced, can’t believe they used to make this stuff as a designer house, if you find it grab it, climbed my top 10 vintage creations really fast.

This is one I never tire of, Love it Love it Love it, which is strange as I generally avoid green fragrances but this is soft and a warmth about it that just works on my skin. Did I mention I Love it!

Good stuff. I don't have the original version from 1965 to compare with. This current version is potent and unabashedly masculine in that (original 1982) Quorum kind of way ... but with a brighter opening and middle because of the citrus and herbs. I heard this has been discontinued. While I wouldn't say that Homme de Gres is a masterpiece, it's most certainly a gem for fans of this kind of scent. This is from the same nose that gave us the original Azzaro Pour Homme and XS, so there are some serious skills on display here. More than worth the plunge if you can find it for a fair price.

There is something about that citrus/woody mix that launches the day so positively and, though it's a familiar scent, few do it better than Grès in this fragrance. A classic chypre.

I like it, reminds me of other similar styled perfumes. Versace L'Homme and Versace Uomo came to mind.

I have to be honest and say that I don't like this. It just smells bitter to me. Masculine, but like an older gentleman, bitter and harsh. Maybe it's because I'm 20. I'm the minority here, but yeah, I don't like this one.

Homme de Gres is one of the greats of its kind. Let the "madding crowd" wear Terre d'Hermes, and pray for their souls (or at least their health, as that iso e super overload makes me feel like I'm working at a chemical plant). They can have their "flinty" fragrance (to me, flinty means it's not blended properly!). Anyway, HdG gets everything right. Over at the Perfume Intelligence site, the notes are listed as: "...bergamot, peach, neroli, jasmine, amber, sandalwood and musk." There seems to be lemon in here but that may just be how the combination comes across. The PI site calls it a dry chypre, and it's certainly dry, but if there is a chypre accord it is being dominated by two elements that play off each other very well. One is the neroli/peach (and what seems like lemon; could this just be very strong bergamot mixed in there?) while the other is the sandalwood (which is really well done here and my guess is that it's achieved with more than one kind). At first it's a bit harsh but just give it half an hour or so to come together. Though these kinds of fragrances tend to lack richness, this one has enough to make it special, and it smells entirely natural. It's great for warm or hot weather but I don't mind wearing it any time of year. The jasmine and amber seem to soften it up just enough to prevent it from being too sharp/harsh, and the balance is near perfect. These are not notes that one would expect to work well together and when peach is used in men's fragrances I tend to find that really unpleasant; somehow it works perfectly here. This is not for the fresh, aquatic, "sport," etc. crowd. Instead, this is meant to be enjoyed by those who understand fragrances! UPDATE: I'm not getting lemon any longer; the listed notes at PI appear to be accurate, though I'd guess there is some oakmoss blended in.

This is really a very brilliant perfume that harkens back to better days of perfumery (before restrictions and regulations). The vintage bottle I have starts with brilliant fresh citrus - the lemon clearly taking center stage. This moves into woody territory - synthetics but probably with some real sandalwood to enhance them. What really surprises me is that no one else has commented on some of the more complex base notes. I get a very strong isobutyl quinoline in the dry down - most likely pyralone - contributing a wonderful leathery note as well as costus (a touch) and civet (a little more than a touch). This is really outstanding and for the lover of vintage perfumes this is a must have to go alongside Patou Pour Homme and Patou Pour Homme Prive on the shelf! I guess I shouldn't be surprised at how truly good this is considering the perfumer also created Azzaro and Balenciaga for men - two other truly outstanding fragrances for men.

I prefer remember this fragrance after discontinue as a summer superb scent! Sometimes and after a lot of examples a discontinue of a scent make it legendary! I can't imagine this beautiful fragrance without oak moss! As happen to Eau Savage(thanks to IFRA! Banned oak moss for allergy reasons,this foolish decision destroy some legendary scents,eau Savage etc, 0,0000001% has allergy to oak moss and banned this ingredient! Fool and fool again)! I suggest to IFRA banned all natural ingredients and replace all with chemical,IFRA you are excessive! Let us choose what we want to buy! If you has allergy to something you don't buy it again! We don't need any IFRA to deside for us! ENOUGH!!!

I'm lucky! Today i find a forgoten 125 ml after shave only 20 euros in a perfume shop,After so many years discontinued but i'm very lucky,the juice are fresh as new,smell it and youth memories returned,very foolish desicion of Gres discontinue this scent! FOOLISH!

Someone mentioned this is similar to Capucci, which I already own. Does anyone familiar with both care to offer a comparison. I love the house of Gres, but would prefer to get something else if they are very similar. Thanks!

Aromatic-bitter mossy citrus on leather and woody base, very intense, very skilfully done, as perfect, as made and meant for you suit at posh New-York private tailor High class.

This is a very nice citrus and jasmine blend that lasts about 5 hours. Inexpensive. Yes it not dissimilar to a few other perfumes but for the money ,its worth it

Its a stunning old school couture cologne. I wear this often, I get through a lot of this. It is also very reminiscent of Capucci which is similarly old school.

In this genre you cannot beat Chanel Pour Monsieur EDP. This smells like a more herbal but hallow version of that fragrance - not in a good way.

It is very similar to classical Ellipse for women by Jacques Fath, favourite perfume of my old mom. Mossy bittery juicy. Nice typical retro.

I have finally found something I love . Fresh green. Citrus with a little piss. I am in heaven . Thank you Gres.
