Shambhala

Being that there are no other reviews yet, I'm going to err on the side of verbose so that anyone on the fence about trying this has more to go on while they consider. tl;dr at end for people who want that instead. So, first off, this was a wonderful find for me, and I came across this fragrance specifically hunting for a combination of notes using that search feature: mountain air, sandalwood, tea. This immediately looked like what I wanted, and surprise, it actually was. Shambhala is every bit as fresh as that bar up top. With the opening, the citron and neroli are more pronounced, but not fully dominating. What dominates this scent, pretty much from start to finish for me, is that mountain air accord, which is as wonderful as I was hoping it would be. At no point is this fragrance anything but smooth. I am sure you COULD overspray it, but imo it would take effort to make this offensive, because it smells clean, fresh, and pure, but in the least abrasive way possible, without being even remotely sweet or anything any of the usual traits to cover up a rough edge. Not this one! I find almost all of the notes noticeably present, though the lotus is decidedly the hardest for me to smell. It's definitely not enough to approach aquatic. Even when the mountain air has mostly faded, there's still a bit of that clean, blended scent left. It does smell a bit different from further away and closer up-- more ozonic, I think, next to skin. It's not the nag champa, but there's a full on fresh accord there that is just lovely; from further away, I think you notice the cypress a bit more, ironically? It smells a bit more forest away from skin. But mostly I get fresh air, and that's fantastic. I'm going to make a quick comparison, actually. Shambhala is to mountains and air what Rem Escale a St. Barth is to beach and water. A place and a whole vibe is taking the stage here. It's not about preaching any individual notes, but bringing you the accord. Shambhala is being at a temple in the morning, gazing off at mountain fog while you drink your tea. It is fresh air, the quiet presence of trees, cool and clean stone, and catching incense in the breeze. It's giving calm acceptance and a focused mind, easy and at rest, but also ready and aware, and intent to bring meditation to mind here is spot-on. More on this later. As for the projection, it's both a bit more than you think and yet remains understated (5-6 feet for me); the presence of this perfume bubble is not a loud one, but it is persistent. I got a bit more projection than most, and a moderate (though short-lived) sillage. This is more of a transient presence, and less inclined to leave lasting memories of your passing in the air-- it's fresh enough, that it honestly would probably blend in all too readily after a moment. I can picture someone thinking, "Hm, smells nice in here" without really clocking that it's a perfume, unless they were next to the person wearing it. It's air-is-fresher, but it's not air freshener, if that makes sense? It's something else, and if there were no context, I don't know that a split-second passerby would know what to make of it. Longevity, actually pretty good. I've worn this twice, technically three times since I reapplied right before bed lol. I got about 6-7ish hours out of it the first time before it turned into a skin scent, and today I put it on at 5:30 with just a little more spraying than last time (still not a ton, mind you) and that was still bubbling me until around 1:30-2:00; it was there on my arm, definitely sniffably good still, but no bubble at that point. So I want to say you can expect about 6-8 hours depending on how much you apply, whether you moisturized, etc. It's far too mild-tempered to be a beast, but it does last well. I have not thoroughly tested this on fabric, and since my decant is a bit low, I'm going to wait to test it, and will update accordingly later. I know it does smell good on fabric, but I'll come back with numbers. Seasonally speaking, I'm surprised people find this more of a summer scent than a winter one. I think this would work in any season; I was a bit skeptical how it would do in melting hot heat, but hm, I ran around a lot earlier and it was fine lol. Felt a bit fresh despite the sweat. It also suits humidity-- mountain fog, if you will. However, I think this is perfect for that fresh, cold air that feels brisk but not freezing. I would say it leans winter-spring, imo. Day, night, both good matches. This is a good bedtime wear, though maybe it leans a bit more daytime. No bad time to wear it, I think. You could wear this casually, or I could easily see this being a signature scent. I would say generally no on clubbing, concerts, etc-- I could feel very comfortable, say, wearing this to a wedding or something very formal and serious, or a cozy dinner party or event. Nothing too frantic or chaotic, and it is the opposite of disruptive. Switching gears a moment. Regarding impressions I get from this about someone's expression and who it might be a match for, hmm. I feel that the fragrance itself is rather unisex and neutral in its associations. However you present yourself, you could easily wear this as long as you feel it fits your personality-- it feels very flexible. That said, I do feel that the people who I'd expect to be more likely to opt for this would lean a bit masculine or perhaps not very feminine, but not in a way I think would strike anyone as particularly significant. Love that about it, actually. On the other hand, like how it doesn't mesh with high-energy events, this scent does feel like it carries personality connotations, not necessarily evoking things so much as turning away from others. If you are the life of the party and you want a fragrance that is going to turn heads the moment you walk in the room, Shambhala is not what you are looking for today. Shambhala at max volume is still speaking to you with gentle confidence. That said, you don't need to be ascetic or anything in particular to pull this off. This fragrance makes me think of someone who is mellow, thoughtful, and conscientious; it feels like it has an affinity, but not a requirement, for someone who likes reading and is used to studying, given to quiet creativity and those who have added rituals into their daily lives as points of pause. That's also who I think this scent will most appeal to-- tea drinkers, moment-of-quiet seekers, people who regularly remember and value the importance of unwinding and grounding themselves. I think this is a unique, unusual kind of scent that would generally be well-received, and most likely loved by those looking for a mellow that matches their own. ((Sidenote where I nerd out! Skip if you don't read xianxia novels. I think it's fun to find scents that evoke characters from the stories I enjoy. That said, this is exactly , to the tee, what I would expect from Lan Wangji, right down to the hidden hint of lotus, which, if you recognize that name, you know why. This IS the scent of Cloud Recesses, this is maximum Hanguang-jun playing the qin. For the like, maybe three whole people on Fragrantica who might know what I'm on about, you would be so delighted to smell this. For the person who will have gotten here from a 3am google search of "smells like Lan Wangji", yeah, here you go, my dude. (Please get some sleep.) It's also honestly just a great "cultivator in the mountains" scent. Anyway, back to the fragtalk for the rest of you--)) Digression aside, I love this fragrance. I immediately loved this fragrance. I bought two bottles of this fragrance. I never would've done that if I hadn't first (finally!) found a decant for sale; the official website mentions samples, but then I couldn't find them anywhere, and so I put it off.** **((Update: Fun fact, I messaged Grisiau about being unable to find where I can buy samples, not really expecting a reply so much as leaving a comment, but they wrote back and it turns out they simply no longer offer the sale of these (potential for package loss and other challenges), yet do still include them as free samples with purchases. Hey, that's fair. I do hope more places will offer decants, though. It's too rare to expect to smell it in the wild.)) That said, now I have tried it, and yes, I bought TWO bottles, because I need one to love and another one to keep as a backup because I've only just met this fragrance yesterday, but I would mourn if it were no longer available. Like I was not ready to blind buy a bottle of this on a whim, but now that I've smelled it, I require it. I would say it's borderline "I want to roll in it" levels of love, but maybe a smidge too chill to land there solidly. Allow me to elaborate. I would be absolutely charmed to smell this on someone. Maybe I wouldn't crawl all over them like a little raccoon (...maybe), but you know how sometimes you just want to press your nose really hard into fresh laundry and inhale? That. Wear this if you want me to think about sniffing you like I'd sniff laundry. 10/10, would inhale your scent and be super normal about it. It is clean and cuddle-friendly. I could adhere my nostrils to freshly-applied Shambhala and be fine, and I can't really say that about most fragrances, as much as I might love them. There would be marks on your arm like a vampire bite from where my nose was, after you've managed to pry me off. Anyway, on that note and silliness aside-- as far as blind buys go, I wouldn't recommend it universally. If you've read the above and feel like you can already tell it meshes with you, then you're honestly probably going to love it; it is what it says on the tin. If you feel more unsure, then even though I feel the odds are quite favorable, maybe don't roll the dice right away, and see about a decant. I know at least one place has them for now. Last note, re: ingredients and transparency, there is some info on Grisiau's site about not using phthalates or testing on animals, etc, and they do list their ingredients. I don't know enough to comment on the other ingredients well, so I'll just suggest giving it a read if you're more literate in that than I am. --- tl;dr: This fragrance is what it says on the tin. It's fresh, calming, long-lasting, and pervasive without being intrusive or the least bit obnoxious. If Shambhala were a person, it would be someone you could talk to about pretty much anything-- unflappably accepting, patient, and accommodating, reliable and true. It is a vibe, and that vibe is peace and fresh air.

There's honestly no way for my review to stack up to the sniffer's below, but I'll give my opinion on it. Unlike sniffer, for me the lotus and tea slap me in the face, and the citron is a nice little carry for the first hour or so. For some reason, it feels like an air freshener, but one of the nice ones you put in your house. It's also suuuuper smooth and very well blended, and at some points it's enough to lose track of any one note. The projection ranges from a good 3-5 feet, and stays that way for about 2-4 hours depending on the season. It strikes me as a vaguely performative scent, belonging to someone who drinks matcha for the insta stories, but altogether it's not a bad vibe to have. For 50 bucks with their first time discount, I can't be mad whatsoever, and it's definitely the most unique scent I have in my collection.
