Gucci No 1 Eau de Parfum

I don't typically review women's scents, but this is an epic masterpiece. With the passing of Guy Robert just two days ago on May 28th, I wanted to say that this is a bottle of amazing quality - a masterpiece and timeless beauty. While classified as a "Floral Aldehyde" - it is stunningly deep, rich and full of earthy and wood notes. Oakmoss, patchouli, amber, cedar, musk and a benzoin/vanilla base further enhanced by tonka bean. So deep and warm. The color of the Eau de Parfum in a 60ml spray I bought for my wife is bronze and all the notes are true to form. It is closer in color to Guy Robert's 1970 masterpiece he created for Hermes in Equipage (4 years earlier) than his bottling of Gucci Pour Homme Original just two years later...a chypre. Now, while I am adventurous in scent and adore his 1976 creation - a masterpiece for men! - there is a part of me that believes this scent with it gorgeous base notes and integrated oriental tones and depth could possibly be worn by a confident, classic man! I have floral scents for men that are far less rich as this and could easily be worn by my wife. While I believe this is perfection in scent made for a confident and elegant woman of taste - understand that this plays off Carl Jung's archetypes of both Dynamic Feminine and a strong presence of Static Masculine in the base notes that could easily rise to the forefront. It smells as good today as it did nearly 40 years ago - and, perhaps in comparison to so many scents that are not nearly as well-composed...even better. Timeless. Just like a piece by Bach, or Chopin - does it ever sound "dated"? No, it is classic...as is this fragrance. I see this as a centerpiece for a woman's collection - it is chic, amazingly elegant and gorgeously rich. Not for the faint of heart. Age appropriate is 30's to 60's, but it is how a woman carries herself and her aire of sophistication that will allow her to adorn this fragrance. This is a confident Woman's scent that is never going to be out of style - like Monsieur Robert's Pour Homme bottling...you must wear this proper or it will wear you. 10/10. Masterpiece.

Maybe I am too subjective in here, because I have worn this svent for almost three decades and at that time I did not know nearly as many fragrances as I do today. Whatever the reason, I love this fragrance. I do not usually like carnation that much, which is to me the most preeminent note in this fragrance, but here, although very obvious and as noticeable as in other famous carnation fragrances or even more, it is used in a very good balance from my viewpoint with the other notes. Its scent goes and comes, and, at the breaks, lets you smell fully the round full sweet side of this fragrance, to me achieved mostly from jasmine and amber. It also smells a lot of cedarwood, whose scent mixes up very tightly with carnation. Also, this fragrance is really strong and powerful, everyone in a room wil notice it, and has excellent silage and staying power. Well, it was created at a time when eau de parfum really meant what it is supposed to mean. Guy Robert really created masterpieces. I have owned for decades all his three to me main fragrances, Madame Rochas, Caleche and Gucci no 1. It is a pity it has been discontinued, although some five years ago I still found a bottle in a London Chemist.

Guy Robert is one of my favorite perfumers. He weaves his compositions into a tapestry that illuminates each element and has them singing a chorus of dramatic movements throughout each discrete work's development. It's not to say that this has anything to do with some wondrous alchemy on the part of Robert, but each vintage I own seems somehow immaculate, spared from the ravages of time, still sonorous after decades. It is quite a coincidence, though, and makes me wonder (and oh how I love to wonder!). In Gucci No 1 EDP, Robert's penchant for arresting grandiosity is in full effect: an announcement of aldehydes ringing in the glamour of full-bodied florals, most notably rose, hyacinth, heliotrope, and lilac to my nose, with strong suggestions of carnation and ylang-ylang. It's intoxicating, with the blooms bursting and effulgent, reminding me of walking through an arboretum at the peak of spring with all manner of blooms emanating their seductive aromas. Yet it still manages to feel baroque and tender, especially as the dry down softens the edges, as if the flowers all retreat to a welcoming moss-lined cedar chest to reflect and rest. It is sensational.

This is perfume artistry, so elevated compared to Gucci by Gucci or Gucci Rush. It is easy to just think "oh that's pretty" but then the complexity of the ingredients keeps bringing more. I'll have to wear it more to have a review that does this justice. Addendum: I have a LOT of scents, so it has been a while since I wrote this. I wore it again today, and the first application as I said before was "pretty". It seemed very floral and kind of Joy/Fidji/Anais Anais-ish. The scent would be kind of on my periphery and then dissipate when I tried to get a good sniff. Then, after lunch I reapplied my vintage edp, spraying a bit more, not a lot. Same bottle, mind you. It was like putting on a different scent! All of a sudden the herbal/green/woodiness flowed forth and enveloped me in majesty! Now a few hours later, I have some of each the floral and the woody quality. Oh yeah, this is a real masterpiece, alright.

Stunning!! I love green, I love ambers and I love carnation, this fragrance has all three!! I received this vintage perfume from a friend. I never smelled it before and as soon as I got it I sprayed some on. I didn't know what the notes were in the fragrantica pyramid but the very first thing I smelled was aldehydes a little bit of hyacinth. Soon it started to change into a very warm fragrance. This is mostly a spicy honeyed carnation with thick gooey Amber. I get the oak moss in the middle notes along with the Ylang Ylang. It smells like there may be some civet in here but it just adds to the class and sophistication of this perfume. It lasts so long at least over 12 hours. Sillage is an arm's length and after 30 minutes sits closer to the skin but still very noticeable. This is such a beauty and I feel very lucky to have this in my collection.

I had bad luck with this scent. I bought a sealed box, but when I opened it, most of the juice had evaporated, so there was less than 1/3 left. The seller agreed to return half of my money. Anyway I decided to make the most of what I got and have been wearing it a few times now. This is fabulous, high perfumery, kind of old school. Very velvety and creamy, smells like you've been using the most expensive, luxurious soap and body lotion. I can't tell the notes apart, but the scent is woody and a little bit animalic but not in a bad way. It simply smells like a wealthy, well-maintained woman, driving in her leather-upholstered car, wearing Gucci sunglasses. The scent lingers around you without re-applying for good 8-10 hours. It's a pity my bottle wasn't full, but if I ever run into Gucci no 1 again I'm going to snatch it.

I'm not sure about this one yet. I just got a vintage bottle of it--never before opened--and I was VERY eager to try it out on me. Gucci 1 is definitely designed for a woman. That said, I'm still trying to decide if it's for me. It has a very strong, decisive signature & I'm not sure which notes are the ones that define it. For me, it really is the aldehydes, cedar, geranium and carnations. Gucci 1 has a way of making an imprint on that part of your mind where memories are stored. I can still smell it precisely even though it's a recent discovery for me; isn't that what is so amazing about classic vintage perfumes!! This is a main reason why we love fragrance isn't it? This would go well with a mediterranean style palacial estate.

I have an old bottle of Gucci no. 1, with a content that has become resinous and difficult to spray, but the juice is still fantastic! It is like that one week of late spring/early summer when you can stick your whole head in a blooming jasmine bush, or a white lilac tree, and become totally emersed in a drunken, heavy and sweet smell, with still fresh and green stems, before the bloom is over, decay kicks in and the smell goes bad. Gucci no. 1 is right on that border between perfectly folded out and over ripe flowers. It stays on the good side though, even though my bottle is ancient by now. What a treat! Thankfully it is quite close to Jill Sander no. 4, which is still available.

This is a truly wonderful, classis scent. It is almost heartbreaking to know that Gucci has decided to stop make this one - when it's such a pearl. My boyfriend always refers to soap when I wear it, classic, old French soap. I didn't like that at first but now I've come to understand that it's more a compliment then a degradation as I first took it. Now I come to think of the classic parfumeries in Paris, late 1700 and the French court every time that I smell it. If you have a bottle, cherish it because this will be a curiosity to have in your collection in near future.

Gucci No. 1 Where have you been all my life? You are so rich and elegant. You are exactly the way I want to smell, like dense flowers and woods, mysterious and alluring, a damp forest on a spring morning. And you last all day. You are certainly No. 1 for me now, in my top 5 of all time that includes Jacomo Silences, Vagabound Prince Enchanted Forest, Guerlain's Chamade & Samsara, Morabito OR Black, EL Pure White Linen and Givenchy III. I will never let you go! p.s. have yet to try Gucci No.3...it is next on my wish list!

This is a true classic for a reason! Gucci No. 1 has been my go-to scent for years. It's floral and elegant with a touch of powderiness that makes it feel sophisticated. The longevity is amazing - I can still smell it on my clothes the next day!

When I was a child and thought about what perfume smelled like, Gucci No. 1 is what I imagined in my mind. As a child of the 80s, it’s no surprise that a big powdery floral with aldehydes and oakmoss in the base, would be what I had olfactory dreams of. When I first spray this it simply smells like “80s perfume,” but I immediately recognized the aldehydes, then the hyacinth, and I could already detect the oak moss. My 9 year old told me that I smelled good at this point. As it dries down, I smell a simple, but fragrant bouquet of early spring flowers, the oak moss and aldehydes are still there but tempered by the woodiness that’s peaking through. Maybe this perfume is dated, but it’s very lovely, and it’s exactly what I miss in todays perfumes. Definitely worth a try, if you can find a sample, it’s worth it!

They don't make them like this ANY more! This is what Gucci really is for people who remember the name and the brand. Very woody and slightly (sickly) floral. But at the same time warm and gives off a floral, almost herbal type vibe. This stuff is brilliant. Truly... They do NOT make them like this any more! (Which is a shame... A real shame). If you find this or have a bottle. Please, SAVOUR it. Make it last while you can. This is how real ladies used to smell like. Not like today's designer fragrance disasters.

....When the snow falls you ́re found in St. Mortiz, with the others of the jet set. And you drink your Napoleon brandy, but you never get your lips wet, no you don ́t. From the old song, these lyrics remind me of Gucci No 1. I was surprized by this and you may be too. Sweet woody, smoky but rich. Just a really winning fragrance. This is an uptown girl with a downtown boy, type of fragrance. Classic and conventional, but with a few little edges.

Really smooth, fresh but warm and creamy floral. Not dated. I don't think I would have been able to guess at the year it came out at all. Just a gorgeous floral for anyone who enjoys that sort of thing. Fortunately, I definitely do! I think it probably stood out for its time because it doesn't have any rough edges. Now we have so many florals that stay smooth from start to finish that this one would probably just blend in. Still gorgeous.

Gucci No. 1 was pleasantly surprising for me. As someone who usually leans towards darker, heavy perfumes which are not blatantly floral, this bouquet bloomed into pure magic on my skin. This is soft, sweet, and delicate without feeling juvenile; this is 100% class in my opinion. The composition is one of the most well-blended I've ever smelt. Without question, this is one refined lady.

I remember using this when I was 10-12 years old (late 80s/early 90s). I think I smelled it on my mom and expressed liking it so she gave me a bottle and kept giving me another whenever I ran out. I don't really remember how it smelled like and I'm really intrigued about it now because my mom and I have vastly different tastes in perfumes. Edit: nevermind, i think it was gucci no.3 😆

This makes me long for a different time. It makes me realize how much time has gone by. That nothing smells like this anymore. I treasure the amount I have. I wore it to bed last night, and it is still wafting around me this morning. My clothes smell like it even after washing them. It is so pretty. It’s a sophisticated smell. It smells intentional. It’s a masterpiece.

I believe iI wore this in the 1970s, based on the picture. When I look at those many notes (and especially what some of them are), I wonder how it was that I wore this. I don't consider myself a big lover of florals. These days I am more of a gourmand girl. I would sure like to smell it again, though, just fior nostalgia's sake.

I would LOVE to smell this fragrance, but I can't find it anywhere......I do have EAU DE GUCCI CONCENTRATED though....a wonderful fragrance that's timeless and elegant. Maybe we can exchange a small tester? Please send me a PM. Thank you.

Delicate but strong; feminine but balllsy; 1980s shoulder pads but classic; discontinued but found in an antique shop.

Smells like Fidji, Shiseido Zen and L'air du temps rolled into one a real classic.
