Elixir Charnel Chypre Fatal

[FEB. 2021] Was this reformulated? The reactions of this perfume back in 2013 are a lot different from the ones at the start of this decade. Perhaps, as Kafkaesque has said, its "just a higher quality version of department store scents" but as it stands right now that quality is a lot more noticeable compared to post-IFRA meddled fragrances of now, and Chypre Fatal smells like a standing example of the potency of fragrances before that debacle of 2014. Maybe compared to other fragrances of this price range, it would be correct to instead buy Amouage, MDCI, or Tom Ford (Oud Fleur, I wholeheartedly recommend), but Chypre Fatal works incredibly well on my skin which I'd recommend if you naturally amplify balsam and salt notes when wearing a fragrance. On my skin, Chypre Fatal is a wonderfully balsamic boozy salted scent with a cute lipstick powder undertone as it dries down. It has a scent equivalent of oak-barreled cherry brandy with the cup lined in salt rock. And unlike other patchouli-rose combos, no vanilla here. It's replaced with some savoury dark chocolate. Unlike other Guerlinade fragrances, there are also no soapy undertones, perhaps except for the lipstick powder drydown: and it's all the better for that as the rest of Guerlain becomes too vintage soap on me. I wouldn't buy this if it werent for the fact a good standing with Afterpay makes obtaining things all the more easier, to have anything you want almost. In the future I would experiment with Chanel's Coco Noir, and M. Micallef's Mon Parfum to see if I can get this same scent cheaper with equivalent fragrant efficiency. I also got this fragrance because its like Clive Christian's "L" Chypre Floral but way more... not absurd with its offering (a measly 50ml when you can get this...) And the quality, at least because it performs so well on my skin, makes it just as good too! For me, its a 5 star fragrance. But as with other Guerlain perfumes, your mileage may vary. Test on your skin before getting a FB! (As it stands, its one of my top fragrances of all time along with: Creed's Acqua Fiorentina, Tom Ford's Oud Fleur, MDCI's Un Coeur En Mai, and The Orchid Man by Frapin. Shoutout to Beloved by Amouage, which I shall look up to as a work of art from afar.)

This is such an underrated beauty! I think it might be because of the name. No, this is not a chypre at all and I‘m glad for that. If that‘s what you‘re looking for, look elsewhere. Chypre Fatal is a beautiful, sophisticated, modern floriental. It opens with rose and heavy, earthy but clean patchouli with a little sparkle. The first blast made me think it would be a more night-timey part of the Miss Dior / Coco Mad family, but then a beautiful soft creamy vanilla joins in and takes the scent into a totally different direction. Now the rose smells as light as rose water, and the patchouli becomes polished and smooth. The peach note is so beautiful, really like a fresh white peach that is neither sour nor overripe. In the drydown the general composition reminds me of Gucci Rush, which I also love, but like a much more elegant version of the same concept. If Rush is for wild parties, Chypre Fatal is for more formal events. But of course it could also be worn for regular night outs, dates or even as an everyday scent in the colder months. It‘s versatile. Despite having only four fairly common notes listed, it has a complex development. The notes play with each other, every time I smell it a different aspect takes the center stage. There is nothing disturbing in it, just a perfect balance of patch, rose, peach and vanilla. I love this and I want a bottle, it might be overpriced, but in my personal opinion it‘s much more worth it than the other fragrances from this line.

The intense aura of this fatal fruity chypre haunts, as it presses and caresses with hieratic rose to which patchouli brings its spicy, woody overtones. Vanilla and white peach sensually soften the harmony that leaves an indelible trail.

I adore and its gorgeous old bottle. Today as I wear it I’m stunned anyone thinks it smells like CM which is much more crisp, dry with a very different type of patchouli and a lovely soapy finish. Here the unctuous peach marries beautifully with a lightly wearing but very chocolatey type of patchouli - which here has a chocolate cake reference that never moves too gourmand. It’s softly radiant and juicy but with the patchouli leaving a soft powdered edge in the dry down.

I LOVE THE GUERLAIN LIMITED EDITION LINES. WHEN I FIRST SPRAYED THIS I REALLY DISLIKED THE SMELL. LIKE OLD DATED SLIGHTLY STALE PERFUME. HOWEVER TO MY DELIGHT AFTER HALF AN HOUR A PRETTY NON TOO SWEET ROSE WITH VANILLA LIGHT FRUIT POWDERY EDGE EMERGED. NOT AS SWEET AS ROSE BARBARE, BUT MORE COMPLEX AND VERY INTERESTING. ITS ONE OF THOSE ONES YOU KEEP TRYING ON TO REMIND YOURSELF WHAT IT SMELLS LIKE. JUST NEED TO GET PAST THE FIRST HALF HOUR.

I love it a lot. If anyone is selling Chypre Fatal in this bottle, please let me know >_

This is a very pretty scent but not terribly inventive or special, especially for the price. It reminds me of a Miss Dior Cherie or Coco Noir type scent. The opening comes across very much as a Chanel for me- modern, elegant, sophisticated patchouli, but then it has the recognizable Guerlain vanilla drydown that is present in all the Elixir Charnel and several of the Art et Matiere perfumes. I really do adore the scent and my husband loves it as well, but I already own Miss Dior, Miss Dior Le Parfum, Midnight Poison, Coco Noir, and Coromandel, so for me this perfume would be redundant, especially at that price point. However if you are looking for a pretty patchouli scent and have money to burn, I would recommend this.

When this first arrived all I could smell was patchouli. I ignored my knee jerk reaction and put it on my shelf to allow the fragrance to settle after transit. Two weeks later, I decided to test again: delicious!! This is gourmand leaning but it’s not a sugar added or designer level sweetness. The patchouli has two sides here- an earthy tannic bitterness for the sticky jammy rose opening and mids that mellows into an almost powdery chocolaty patchouli with peach jam nuances that’s linger throughout the wear. The texture is silky like running your hand against fine wool. There’s a lot of complexity in Chypre Fatale if one gives it enough wears and allows it’s secrets to be whispered in one’s ear.

This is very pretty, very inoffensive, not original enough for the price point though. Not really a chypre, more like a classy "fruitchuli". I would consider buying it for a summer fragrance (surprised most ppl felt like this is a fall, winter scent) if it were, idk, maybe under $100, no way I would pay full retail price for this (maybe if I enherited a fortune), it's just not special enough. Very pretty none the less.

Wow, this is probably the only fruity patchouli fragrance I like. It shockingly lovely. I smelled it without looking at the notes and was definitely surprised to see peach and patchouli. Smells more like peach and incense. This is nice! - Reminds me of Tian Di a little but that one doesn't have patch.

Very unique scent. I find the peach notes to be dominate. I am wondering if the combination of these notes, this perfume is actually unisex? Would anyone know if it is acceptable for a man to wear the wonderful perfume?

7.5/10. Yellow chypre. High flying white pepper and yellow daffodil. Too dry and spicy for me. The herbal aspect evaporates and goes straight to the back of my throat like a Ricola lozenge. A little bit sweet too. Powdery later on.

Too sweet. Not unique enough to fork out anything. Also has that Guerlain old fashioned aura. Not unpleasant. But not very original.

Possibly the first ever Guerlain I've actively disliked and I am very careful with hitting the Dislike button. Judging by the notes this should have been a winner for me, I love patchouli and am unafraid of any challenges it might pose. I'm not sure if it's the combination of peach+patchouli that killed it for me as the other scent that I remember disliking with the same combo was Gucci Rush. I wish it were all the wonderful things that Chypre Fatal shared with the other reviewers who wrote such glowing comments. On me it was a sad soapy mess from the word go and it didn't get better with time. Individually I could pick out the notes-peach, vanilla and patchouli were resonating very strongly but perhaps ill-fated on my skin as a mixture. Sillage is very good and longevity is average on me.

I got a sample and was looking for some proper chypre. All i got was something between Shalimar parfum Initial and Euphoria, jimmy Choo and so on. Sweet, chemical, cloying. It`s not chypre and definitely not fatal.

A friend very kindly gifted me a whole tester of this knowing how fond I am of the house. Unfortunately, this proved to be one of the few Guerlain fragrances that really disappointed me. Clearly, this is their best effort at a mainstream fruitchouli-type perfume, and as other reviewers have noted, it is completely unexceptional. I'm actually a fan of a few other examples of the genre, for example, the very polarizing Coco Mademoiselle by Chanel. I think the core structure can in fact be quite refined: refreshingly tart fruit, leafy-green patch, maybe some neutral musks and sharp pepper, etc.—a well balanced everyday scent. That, however, was not my experience of Chypre Fatal, which lives up to its name only in its fatally synthetic, overwhelmingly harsh execution. The peach is plastic, the rose cloying, and the patchouli a mere ghost of itself. There is no progression unless you count the bug spray drydown, and the performance was just strong enough to make me wish I could astrally project my consciousness away from my reeking corporeal husk. This is the least Guerlain Guerlain I've ever smelled, and I hope it's discontinued soon. If you want to try one of their more mainstream, contemporary offerings, just go with one of the Mon Guerlain line, almost all of which are lovely. I'm going to save up for Gourmand Coquin.

Anyone who says that Chypre Fatale smells like Coco Mademoiselle or Miss Dior (2012) is right. But...it's like Guerlain does a super refined, understated, yet pervading version of the structure first set by CM in 2001. So...the structure: Peaches over roses into patchouli. That's right, and that's about it. But I like dessert roses, they are a category all their own. Peachy roses over a surprisingly full and even masculine base of patchouli. The rose is rich and lovely and frankly dominates the perfume before it finally starts to dry down. I am actually surprised at the level of patchouli they used here--despite the peach it's really not a "fruit chouli" (but don't worry it's not quite like Aromatics Elixir, or say Serge Lutens Borneo 1834.) It's woody, it has a hint of menthol, it's green, it's full, it's patchouli. I rather like it. I wish Guerlain would do a truly classic and daring "Chypre Fatale" the right way, but honestly, I admit I like CM and this is better version, if only because of it's restraint (I used to live in a college town, and I have a fond memory of riding my bike home from work at 10 pm--it was a Saturday night and I rode through at least two clouds of Coco Mademoiselle that reached me from the sidewalks full of young people.) But that's all it is. This is discontinued and certainly not a $500 perfume unless you have a special, pre-existing relationship with the fragrance.

I"m a fan of Guerlain's exclusives, but I do have high standards for them and am more harsh in my reviews. This is a good perfume, in the $100-$140 range, but at the price point sold I have to wonder what they were thinking. This is a basic patchouli/rose chypre, which I'm comparing to Sublime Balkiss, Lady Vengeance and Kurkdjian's Lumiere pour femme. This is most expensive of the four, and in my opinion, hte least interesting. What I"m wanting is some 'OOH!!!', like Kurkdjian's spicy rose, Balkiss' blueberry note or Lady Vengeance' edge. But peach and vanilla are just too safe. I"m wondering who the intended audience is for this line, because I don't think it's those who want something unique and trend-setting.

Chypre Fail. It reminds me of Tom Ford's White Patchouli, so I suppose that's how they arrive at calling it a chypre. However it isn't a real patchouli, perhaps there is some attenuated aromachemical that mimics a facet of patchouli. The drydown - seriously Guerlain? Yves Rocher has many better perfumes than this. I do think that my sample may have deteriorated a bit, but even at first spray right from the bottle, it was stronger but still failed to impress. It is an insult to the consumer to put such a cheap juice in an overpriced "exclusive" bottle. It fails as a sales tactic since the only plausible consumer of a pricey exclusive is a perfumista, who will most likely detect the fraud.

I was at a perfume shop recently and happen to love the house of Guerlain. I have quite a few of their fragrances. And the lady was showing me the Elixir Charnel line and I didn’t like half of them and then she showed me this one and I bought it instantly. I was so blown away. It was until I got home and realized that it doesn’t last on the skin. This last at most 3 hours on my skin and then it’s gone. I’m starting to think that this would be better for winter. Now this fragrance is beautiful but not unique. If you want something stronger but in this category I would say to purchase Miss Dior. All in all I love the fragrance but regret not testing it out first.

I'm 37 years old and have been collecting fragrances for 20 years. I own hundreds and I'm telling you as a man, with the deepest sincerity, that no other fragrance I have owned or tried has yielded the response that this has. This is my desert island scent. When I wear this people around me are dumbfounded. It has the kind of femininity that, when worn by a man is completely intriguing for a woman. It is a warm, ever-so slightly sweet, tobacco smoky scent that captivates. I probably pull the cap off this once a day to smell it. My god. Scent 10/10 longevity 8.5/10 sillage 8.5/10 versatility 7.5/10

No oakmoss like a traditional chypre, but still very lovely nevertheless. I ended up with a strangely masculine herby edge that was simply wonderful, but I have to wonder where it came from, as the listed notes show no such thing. Still worth a try, definitely, but don't expect an old fashioned chypre in this. EDIT: Retried and this time I get a wonderful 1920s musky peach with green notes that unfortunately fades into an unspectacular fruity floral after a few hours. Still, nice, but maybe not at this price point

This is what we call a 'modern chypre'. That is too say: not a chypre at all. Void of oakmoss, aldehydes or anything that is the trademark of a traditional chypre. Is it lovely? Of course! Rose, patchouli and basically anything you'd want of a feminine fatal scent, contemporary and full bodied. It's no secret that basically anything touched by Christine Nagel and Sylvaine Delacourte turn to gold... this is no exception.

If you compare this with the other Guerlain perfumes which are generally dense, you might be disappointed. I suggest you take it as it is, and when you do, you will appreciate its own beauty. I totally agree with Italo_Wolff's comment, especially when he described this as an impression of refined sensuality. This is very classy and has a modern treatment of the Guerlinade base.

This is a round vanillic rose with a patchouli edge, nicely done and with great longevity. However, even with the recent replacement of Oakmoss with Patchouli as a base, I have a very hard time with the classification of this as a Chypre. No citrus top, no classic floral heart, no Oakmoss- I consider this instead a Fruity Oriental.

Opens with a delectable, floralized, sweet peach but quickly dries down on my skin to a semi-sour fruity rose patchouli. I'd take Gucci Rush over this any day if I want peach and patchouli. There's nothing new or interesting or different to help this stand out in a crowd of fruitchoulis. Not worth the price in my opinion.

this fragrance is a brother of noir de noir by tom ford and you can notice that guerlain charp frag is more bright than tom ford. it's a beautiful fragrance and we can consider it as another choice for tom ford. regards

I've already done one review, but it seems there is a slight menthol background or something that smells cool as well. Update: Peaches are projecting from my skin. I like that but the price tag is still ridiculous.

This goes on like cough syrup, that's what i detect, the red cough syrup LOL. However , once it dries, it reminds me of a more sophisticated Gucci Rush which I do love .

One of the best chypres out there. Very rich, very old school. The dry down is almost fruity. Huge fragrance, a must try for patchouli lovers.
