Heritage Eau de Parfum

This is a stunning, elegant, gentlemanly scent. Subtlety is the name of the game here. My bottle is the tall, crystal clear, silver cap. I think I can consider my version as a vintage bottle. I am going to put it in comparison to other fragrances. First off, it has the Guerlain thing. Elegant, refined, not as designer fragrance (hello!!!!! Guerlain is niche). Then, the fresh pop in the opening, that only last a few seconds. Then turns aromatic, and powdery. Classic fuguiere structure. Lavender is clean, and has some freshness probably given by other notes. The middle, you can smell the patchouli, and the dustiness of the orris. The floral touch of the carnation and jasmine are noticiable, but not in your face. The patchouli gets extended, by the oakmoss which gives a little touch of greenness to the base. The sandalwood is creamy. By looking at the notes, I perceive the cedar but is there to support the sandalwood. Projection is noticeable for the first 1.5-2 hours. Then, settles to a calming, soft, and yes, I will use the word elegant. There is no other way to put it. I am stunned on how great Heritage EDP is. Similar scents. Beau de Jour by Tom Ford. Similar to it, but less aromatic at the opening than Hetitage. BdJ has a flamboyant, more playful vibe, even for a classic style. It also has some touches of L’Instant Pour Homme EDP, mostly the mid (patchouli). Gender. Masculine. There is no leaning to unisex at all. The structure is a classic fragrance from decades ago. Occasions. Work, formal events, any time actually. For me, it leans great for work. Formal occasions should be fantastic, and carries a sense of a put together person. It can be worn casual or formal. Sport and summer-ish, I think it can be pull it off if wearing an old-money style. Shirts, t-shirts...... you can wear whenever you want it, but I personally use other scents proper for a relaxed outfit. Seasons: I think all year around except in the blasting heat of summer. Pros: Elegant, period. It’s more of a mature scent. Mature in the sense of confident, put together. It’s classic and doesn’t follow trends. Excellent for formal settings: weddings, night outs. Cons: Younger folks may find it “old school”, old person, or vintage. Whatever! Not a mass appealing at all, it’s more classic in a formal way. Not sugary/diabetic sweet as trending fragrances nowadays. Not panty dropper or wet mental dreams. Summary. Heritage is classic, a fragrance built in other times when perfumery was done in an artistic way, with layers of notes and accords that made this composition, in my opinion, a masterpiece. It’s subtle and inviting. It doesn’t grab attention but lingers in a way that is more intriguing than invasive. A younger person used to wear current fragrances may find it old, but those who have experienced with different scents and more classic structured fragrances, will find it phenomenal.

Dear Fragrantica Friends, This will be my last post of the year and it saddens me to write it. Heritage EDP was my favorite scent (note the past tense). It evoked so much of what I love. It was one of those once-in-a-lifetime perfumes that really did do it for me. I actually got to know Heritage quite late in the game (in early 2018) but so much has changed since then... The European regulations (that determined a 4 year transition period ending 23 August 2021) were responsible for the complete butchering of 99% of existing perfumes. Even when - due to some unusual magic by the perfumer - the perfume still managed to retain the original scent, performance and sillage are extremely poor. These last four years have seen the death of old perfumery. Heritage (both EDP and EDT) was one of those that suffered the most. I have with me a bottle from 2018 and a bottle from 2021. I can tell you they are completely different. The older batch could be smelt from the cap. The current one feels like water. I sprayed 20 (TWENTY!) times around 10 minutes ago. It's almost gone. Please do not comment saying I became anosmic to the smell (anosmia is not a common medical condition and does not equal "my brain is not processing the smell because it's saturated"). Anosmia seemed to enter the fragrance world lexicon in 2019 :). In fact, I can still smell my 2018 batch. And everything else for that matter. I agree with most of the reviews below saying this is simply a wonderful perfume. One of the best if not the best ever. Jean-Paul Guerlain was a genius without equal. However, please consider that most of these reviews do not refer to the new version. This is one of the problems with online reviewing. Even if the review is true, it should at least mention the year of production. Because it really matters. Sometimes, we watch online reviewers talking about their favorite perfumes with half-empty bottles from 5 years ago. That is perfectly fine IF they're talking about a vintage scent. BUT they should really do their research before suggesting a perfume if the new batches in production do not match the product they have. Coming back to Heritage. The 2018 Heritage was a miracle. The new one (sold under the same name and bottle) is a very very sad disappointment. As I dramatically said, "these last four years have seen the death of old perfumery". In any case, perfumery is not dead. Many great things are still to be done! We just need to let the old memories go. We need to let the old perfumes go. Even if they are the Love of loves. Even if they are Heritage. I wish you all a Happy and Fragrant 2022.

Oooh, applies very nice, warm, thick vetiver. Pure and high quality with lots of nuance. Peppery with smooth creamy balance. Sun scorched wood and faint shampoo. Dry grass builds. Ivy peaks out of the top from earthy, dank headshop that doesn't scream marijuana, but patchouli is a companion. The high quality nuance keeps pulling me back. Even though it's in the genre of barbershop, it's unique enough to not be familiar or dated. Love how the vetiver shines. Wood develops naturally and builds out the base while green herbs and amber spice blend well. The EDT pales in comparison! Not even close to how deep and sophisticated this is. Loved the sample I got years ago, I reordered to confirm, but it's not the mind-boggling beast I got before. Spraying on fabric helps, but doesn't send me into a tizzy like the powerhouse I remember. This is "normal/fine" - not bad, just not as massive. Dry down becomes INSANELY good. Delectable, but not gourmand. The euphoria of smelling the best vanilla, without being vanilla. One of the easiest bottle-worthy decisions ever. 2ND TRY: Potent and dense. 1 spray is almost too much! Vintage barbershop aftershave balanced by warm, cozy depth. Amber and salty oud finishes with spicey pine loam & dry moss. Strong and lasts forever. Sexy, likable, yet unfamiliar. Dated in a cool way. Can't get enough even though it's a beast. 1ST TRY: Applies better than EDT with sharp barbershop freshness. Spicy oak moss. Cashmere and dry cozy sweater. Questionable soapy thickness builds. Dry vetiver dominates while briskness keeps it old school. Dry sandalwood takes over until warm amber builds in the dry down. More intense and deep than EDT. Dry down is warm, spicy, appealing - nuanced and hard not to like. Lingering dank, sweet, smoky tobacco. Less dated than the EDT. Dense and sexy without being sweet. Finish is rich and horny.

This is one of my favorites among the style of traditional, masculine woody orientals. Heritage features a fairly complex blend of spices, woods, and aromatics, and as a result comes across as an interesting and engaging scent. There's an excellent sandalwood accord present here, paired with a dry, earthy-mineralic patchouli and it seems to serve as Heritage's backbone, around which you'll find various embellishments. There's the resinous comfort of amber in its base, which adds depth and fullness; a prickly, aromatic accent along its edges, lead by pepper and oakmoss; and some pleasantly musky funk, slightly warm and animalic, and possibly rooted in coriander, as its dominant smell that accompanies this particular musk. What results is a mature, woody masculine that is both comforting and elegant, alluring and composed. While Heritage would certainly be appropriate to wear with a Tux, dressed up, it's perhaps even better when worn with a flannel, a relaxing warm blend that's perfect company on a lazy weekend. It's this reposed aspect of comforting warmth that I enjoy most about it, and which I find is just a bit more abundant in the EDP as opposed to the EDT. While Heritage may have lost a little bit of its charm over the course of various reformulations (which fragrance hasn't?), the current EDP is still very nice, and as long as I'm not wearing it side by side with an older iteration, I barely notice a difference and enjoy it just the same. While I was originally concerned about how the juice in the new style of Guerlain bottles would smell, I have to say that I think they've done an excellent job with them. If any reformulations have occurred (and they most likely have), they're very well done. I was impressed by both new bottles of Vetiver and L'Instant. Heritage EDP has certainly not disappointed either. Thumbs up. 8.5/10

This may be the "best of genre" of a group of similar late '80's/early '90's fragrances, which include this and the likes of Ralph Lauren Safari and YSL Jazz. I think the main thing that sets Heritage apart from its genre peers is the olfactory association with old, vintage, musty/dusty, historic, relics dripping with dignity, class and gravitas. And memories. Fragrances of this genre sit quietly close to the skin. My current formulation bottles of YSL Jazz and Ralph Lauren Safari do. Heritage sits rather quietly close to the skin, but has sneaky longevity (update April 2023: I've upgraded my assessment of longevity to 'eternal'. I've worn it twice recently and both times wore it for two days straight because kept getting wafts for 24+ hours). I applied rather heavily last night and got pleasant wafts all night, and I woke up this morning with it still quite detectable on skin and shirt. The similarities in note structure among this particular late '80's/early '90's can be quite striking. Look at the Fragrantica note lists for Heritage and Safari. Both have aldehydes, green notes and lavender in the top! With lots of the same notes everywhere. I have and like both tremendously, but despite the note similarity they do manifest differently in smell. Similar but different. This is listed here as in the Woody Spicy genre, and it is, but it's also very much an Aromatic Fougere-esq fragrance. It's not that dissimilar to fragrances like Creed Bois du Portugal, a wood-forward Fougere. The lavender is listed below the patchouli in the accord stack but it manifests stronger to my nose. Well done Jean-Paul Guerlain. Heritage is my favorite Guerlain, just ahead of the classic masterpiece Vetiver.

Simple, classic, elegant, masculine. So many positive words can be used to describe it. It has been my daily driver for about five or six years now, having inherited it from my father. Quite fittingly, Guerlain describes it as "the intergenerational fragrance" for the "men of tomorrow". The fragrance opens with a blast of fresh, aromatic notes before revealing the spicy pink pepper and coriander. This perfect opening settles into a long-lasting blend of wood, amber, and the classic Guerlinade base that projects very well. It is warm and refined, certainly more suitable to the winter and autumn but being British, I can get good use out of it into the spring as well. Every girl I have ever been with adored it. As an informational note, I transitioned from an old (early 2000s - silver cap) Eau de Toilette to a modern Eau de Parfum (2024 - black cap) and it is apparent that there has been reformulation. It is not major, but if you have used both you may notice. I feel that the modern version is a tad weaker. It is perfectly tolerable, but I am saving the the remaining 2ml~ of my silver cap bottle for a special occasion. Despite being an EdT, the original got as good a performance as the newer EdP. 9.5/10 - my daily driver, let down only by the slight weakening of modern formulations. The same quality you will expect from Guerlain and more affordable than a lot of their other fragrances too.

Absolute masterpiece! My favorite Guerlain fragrance. People calling this dated just don't understand so-called "dated" fragrances are still in production for a reason. They have a history with the wearer. Like a good friend, it makes your days brighter, more memorable, and interesting for you and those around you. Heritage is a true oriental fragrance and perfectly blended with over a dozen notes. It's warm & comforting, spicy, slightly smoky and always interesting hour after hour, from the strong top notes that ignites your senses all the way to the luscious drydown. It's one of those unique fragrances only suitable for a true gentlemen, a man of impeccable taste, nicely dressed with an aurora of class and timeliness. It's not a crowd pleaser by any means, and thus, not everyone can pull off wearing such a distinctive scent. And that's what makes it so special for the lovers of Heritage across the globe. EDT is excellent as well. But EDP is a work of art. After all, its YOUR Heritage.

I blind bought this due to a number of recommendations. Upon first applying it, I was disappointed and was thinking I was going to regret the purchase. Fifteen minutes later my first impression couldn’t be more wrong. I really like this fragrance. Just needed it to dry down. The dry down and base notes of this are amazingly warm and masculine...Amber is what resonates for me. The patchouli is also very prominent. This could be a go to scent for work and every day wear. Longevity is fantastic. Projection is OK...about arms length before settling in to a personal space scent (which suits this fragrance). 3/19 Update - this could easily become a signature scent for a “dad” like myself. It does not have the flash of today’s newer DNAs, but this exudes “been there, done that” confidence. I can not get over how well this dries down...smooth, woody, mellow...think a guy being in a room full of men and doesn’t feel the need to prove he’s got it going on.

I was lucky enough to aquire one of the older, tall bottles. I have a dozen or so barbershop fragrances and this one is very unique. Its like a freshly whipped batch of shave soap. Its so creamy and luscious with plenty of masculine spice behind. I did a minimal two sprays on my shirt before the gym and it projected well. It held up well to my 90 minute session. I am going to have to give it a run at work to see how long it lasts under normal circumstances. Ill update this review when I do so. 8.5/10... if I can get 6+ hours out if it, ill bump to a 9. 4 hours max on this but its heavy projection. Once it dissipates its gone. Ill bring a decant with me when I wear it going forward. Two sprays is all you need. I secured an older bottle of the EDT. Its less creamy and has more spice. Patchouli is generously added. It has a little less performance, but only 2-3 sprays are required. Bring a decant to work with you and reapply a spray at lunch.

If you grew up in the rural American South or Midwest in the late 1970’s/early 1980’s, and had a really classy grandfather/great grandfather who everyone in the entire town respected because of his cool, calm, wise countenance, Guerlain’s Heritage is what that man smelled like without a doubt. I mean that statement with 100% respect to both the people I mentioned and to Guerlain. Absolutely amazing fragrance, and for anyone lucky enough to have enjoyed a few bottles of Guerlain’s Coriolan, this EDP differs only by throwing some powder your way in the top notes and then settling right into Coriolan’s middle/base notes, which is an incredible fougere/chypre. While the powdery top notes(which dry down fast) pay homage to the heyday of the powdery 1980’s, the middle and base notes rewind to something from quite a few decades earlier. Simply put, this is like Coriolan’s wiser father. If you’re an older guy this will suit you very well!

I have an older, vintage bottle, so I can't speak to the recent reformulations, but my version is truly exceptional. Initially, I was unsure about how I felt and even considered selling or swapping it. However, after spending more time with it, I'm glad I decided to keep it, especially since the older versions are becoming increasingly rare. This fragrance exudes maturity and masculinity, radiating class and cool confidence. On my skin, it has impressive longevity, lasting at least 24 hours with a projection that is noticeable but never overwhelming. That said, this is definitely not a fragrance for an impulsive purchase, unless you have the budget to spare. Although I now adore it, my initial reaction was one of disappointment. It's one of those scents that require time to be truly appreciated. I will certainly seek out at least one additional bottle as a backup.

Heritage, a word meaning of passing down from one to another. a lineage, a tradition. This fragrance is just that. Now that it has been around for a quarter century itself, it really rings true. Heritage has a classic Guerlain trademark scent to it that i pick up in other scents like habit rouge dress code. It's a classy scent, preferrably for night but can be worn in some daytime events. Has a warm spicy scent that screams colder weather days but has a lot of versatility to it. It's classy. Just like Guerlain. Timeless. Just like Guerlain. This is a classic. absolutely love it. Great longevity. Great projection. It's warming, soft, and inviting. like making love on a bear skin rug by the fireplace kinda warm, soft and inviting. highly recommended.

If you're looking for a men's Guerlain that still tips the cap to Shalimar with the signature Guerlinade accord, this is it. The florals (rose and jasmine in particular) are still very clearly there, but while Habit Rouge lets that accord be the star of the show, emboldened by sweetness from the heartier dose of vanilla and tonka, here in Heritage it's more readily tempered by the fougere-esque aromatics (lavender/juniper), and a much earthier dry down courtesy of the patchouli and amber. And the result is stunning. Far more masculine than Habit Rouge, and because of that also easier to wear while still being bold, standout, and classic. I don't think this tops L'Instant EDP as my favourite entry level Guerlain, but it certainly comes close.

Heritage... Classic Guerlain... a Stunner! A masculine very refined presence (classic Guerlain ) that thankfully is all 4 season appropriate for me. I wear the EDT or the EDP daily in a professional luxury business environment. They are extremely similar but I find the EDP longevity to 8hrs & the EDT about 6. The EDP having a bit more rounder softer notes and a tad more projection, however neither is a screamer. Has a similar wearability to Jaipur which I really enjoy wearing in quiet romantic times. So this is a welcome addition. The compliments are few with Heritage, however I do notice the women seem to perk up and hover a closer... a little longer when they catch a faint whiff. I'll take that over a complement any day!

I must admit. It's all in here. All the flavors and concepts of the Guerlain heritage (pun intended) rolled into one fine and grand masculine perfume. Subtle nuances dance through the life of this scent. A real pleasure to wear for the quality and vision of this work. One to contemplate on. Enjoy. Relax. Old school masculine it is for sure, however "old school" should really be considered a highly paid compliment, not as a stereotype as it usually is in the frag world for this perfume. I am in my mid 40ties and although this is a mature scent it does not feel dated. It surely is not a scent that will make your libido increase (!) and is probably best avoided for intimate encounters. Unavoidable for Guerlain fans.

Oh my goodness ... so much pretentious nonsense on here. I wish people would stop auditioning for positions at Vanity Fair or The New Yorker. Will someone please explain to me why this cannot be worn with jeans and a T-Shirt? I regularly do and people tell me I smell nice. This is a wonderful scent, if you like it. Not everyone does ... what can be done? It is a classic, old-fashioned and mature scent that smells of confidence and class. It isn't this year's fashionable night-club scent. When I wear it I feel good. It has decent, not overbearing, sillage and decent longevity. It is complex and interesting, being spicy, woody, flowery and powdery in the right proportions. I think it's a masterpiece.

I have the current version of the EdP (wooden cap) Lovely, classic, rich, aromatic. Opening blast reminded me of Givenchy Gentlemen.. and later more floral. Masculine and sophisticated. Perfectly blended and smooth. Lots going on. Patchouli, Spices, Wood, Powder, Musk, Amber, a creamy/sweet Vanilla like Sandalwood, possibly some Lavender. Great longevity, lasts all day but doesn't project in an obvious way, it's more subtle in that you become used to having this fantastic scent around you. It's not flashy, it's so good it doesn't need to be. Perhaps more suited to Autumn/Fall than warmer months but I wear perfumes I like at any time. At the current prices this is a steal, timeless. Just wonderful!

At least as far as their current formulations are concerned, I think I probably slightly prefer Givenchy Gentleman's take on patchouli, and Davidoff Zino's, to this one, but this is perhaps a little warmer, rounder and classier than Zino (which I also find very classy) while being somewhat lighter/brighter/more colourful and accessible than Gentleman. If Gentleman smells like the sombre heir to a centuries-old aristocratic estate with a library full of leather-bound volumes, this smells like a younger brother with all of the class but less of the burden of duty or expectation. This is the upbeat Prince of Wales to Gentleman's brooding king. The Guerlain's longevity is only average though.

Surely many will not like it and will not understand it, it is not for children or young people who do not have goals in life. You cannot wear it with jeans (ripped or body-hugging jeans) and a t-shirt, it is a perfume for those who want to show off elegance and finesse but at the same time tell other men who see it as too delicate through its subtlety "do not f*** with me". The perfume is made to be worn with a suit and for those who consider themselves men with a head on their shoulders and have goals in life. Sillage on my PH : 9/10 Longevity again an 9/10 Do not recomend it blind buy , but if give more times to wear it , for sure you are goin to like it or love it.

This is an amazing fragrance and doesn't seem dated to me at all. Very gentlemanly and woody and warm. The sandalwood, Patchouli, amber combo are blended so well and smell of high quality. I find this slightly reminiscent to Dior Homme Parfum in it's woody and powdery notes. (Am I crazy?).. Sillage is very good and the trail is fabulous. Not sure what vintage this is but recently bought on FragranceNet so most likely the new formulation. I cannot speak for the older vintage but enjoy this one very much. To me it's easy to wear day to day during any time frame although not peak Summer. This could easily be my signature scent. Scent 10/10 Performance 8/10. Price: 8/10
