L'Âme d'Un Héros

PS: Now that I have worn it a while, it has grown in favor. I bumped my rating up, and put it in my top 5. It now reminds me of a favorite vintage classic, Lauder for Men. It has a beautiful pine and lilly of the valley. The Juniper in Heros is like a pine note for me, blended with florals, and sweet benzoin, perfection! Heros is the only conifer based frag in the Parisians. What I get most is the conifir Juniper berry note, it's a great juniper, with moss and sage. There is that sweet lemonade/ Guerlain mix, with the florals making it classy Guerlain fragrance. It's classy yet very versatile. I had Derby, and I recently purchased and reviewed Chamade. It's my #1 Guerlain and gave a 10/10 rating. It reminds me of my favorite vintage classic, Hermes Equipage; as does Heros. Now that I got my bottle of Heros for $150, Im okay. But I wish I would have gotten a full bottle of Voyou instead. Heros is great, but it is a lot like Chamade, but less floral. It has the same sour accord of oakmoss, carnation, and herbs. Many have said, it's very close to Guerlain Coriolan, which is predominantly Oakmoss. OK, its settling now, and I'm getting the Ylang ylang flower more than the Hyasinth. The floral is still very light. Overall it's very classic smelling. This has a slightly sweet Guerlainade, a mix that is common to many Guerlain fragrances. OK, Im getting to the mid now, 30 minutes in, and its becoming more unique, or distinct from Chamade. The juniper berries, vetiver and some nice woods are getting stronger, and I like this extra woodiness a lot. So its more woody than Chamade, but still herbal, and earthy. Not your typical woody. I'm not sure if I like the ylang ylang in this woody accord. I think they tried to soften up the dry woodiness, but I would prefer more hyacinth or a different floral. I would emphasize the excellent and quite noticable Benzoin resin in the base. Its a slightly sweet woody resin. Chamade is still more floral overall with Hyacinth being the predominant floral. I watched Kristos YouTube of the series with his pal, Eugene. Heros was Kristos #2 after Derby. He gave it high praise because of versatility, its a fine casual fragrance. I agree, amen. Chamade is more special and complex. So if your on a budget, and have to choose between Chamade and Heros: Heros is a bit more masculine, and less floral; Chamade is gender neutral, at times leans slightly feminine when the hyacinth predominates in the dry down. Some younger fragrance lovers, may think this is "old manish". Rating: 9/10 God bless. John 3:16

To say that L'Ame d'Un Héros is the same scent as Coriolan is a lot like saying Polo Modern Reserve is the same fragrance as Polo. They're *technically* the same structure, and are similar enough to mistake for each other, but they do have a different character. The original, Coriolan, is much drier, more masculine. The heart and base notes of L'Ame are very similar, but the opening is more floral, quite a bit smoother. Even the core structure has a different feel - Coriolan reinterpreted with slightly different materials. If you are unable to compare the two scents, I agree that Coriolan is the better value and is very satisfying...but if you're able to compare the two, or if you're a woman who enjoys wearing mens scents, you may end up preferring L'Ame.

I loved CORIOLAN when it came out back in 1999. It will always remind me of the SPA @ The Breakers, Florida for I worked there as an international exchange student. Lots of memories. The scent is very green, herbaceous, chypre, mossy, leafy and "wet". Vetiver and Patchouli give it its manly, natural and green character that at the time liked to smell but not on me for I thought I was too young for the scent at the time. I would still say that this frag is best suited for a well-situated man (not a youngster). The product was initially a commercial failure, I think mainly because of the feminine shaped bottle (that I love and adore). A very sophisticated, green and natural, calming fragrance (with a spicy Sage top note) that would be best suited for a gardener or landscaper...or someone who truly loves and worships nature.

Yes, this is essentially the same scent as Coriolan marked up a hefty amount, but I will say the abrasive herbal astringency is toned down a fair bit, and a doughy/creamy Guerlinade aspect is tuned up. When looking at Guerlain's similar scents that balance an herbal, chypre structure with the Guerlain aesthetic (Philtre d'Amour, Chamade Pour Homme, of the course the legendary Derby) I think honestly those others are either better balanced or more intriguing, though Coriolan is the most readily available/least expensive on the after market.

The top notes are a little musty, and then it dries down as a musty citrus vetiver-green. Hard to describe, really! It doesn't smell so much masculine to me as it does vintage, or from a different age. But perhaps I'm being influenced by the Guerlain story rather than the scent itself. It's okay. It doesn't send me. Sillage and longevity are not good... which is especially a negative at the premium price Guerlain is asking for this. There are more interesting and more masculine men's fragrances for a lot less money.

I own 2 full vintage bottles of Coriolan in the gunpowder flask bottle but out of curiousity i bought a 10 ml decant of lÂme d'Un Héros... i can tell you from memory as i am not doing a side by side comparison but from memory lÂme feels like there is new synthetic sweetness added. While i wouldnt rank the original up there with Derby or LIDGE or Héritage as far as my favorite Guerlain masculines of all time or anything.. i would rank Coriolan as a scent i love to wear in the Texas spring & summer as it gives off this sharp citrus & spice opening with sage and coriander, nutmeg and then the fennel like smell kicks in. I love the sharp contrasts of notes and i bet if you did a side by side comparison you would come to the same conclusion if you did a side by side comparison of vintage derby and the current Les Parisiens bottle of Derby. It is clearly Derby but with current updated noted to make the Nazzis at IFRA happy. Reduced oakmoss and a ramping up of synthetic sweetness. Basically in a nut shell here is what it comes down to.. unless you are an absolute fragrence fanatic (like me) the current formulation if that is all you can fund will suffice. HOWEVER if you can go on ebay and get a good deal on a seal never sprayed version of coriolan in the old bottle do it. It lasts longer and actually what is interesting in jean paul guerlain started working on this the same time he started working on Derby and you can see it in the composition. Not in the way they smell because they smell very different but in the feeling and texture and composition of the fragrence. Vintage derby goes for 500 or 1000 dollars. Vintage coriolan can be had for peanuts for a vintage fragrence. I scored TWO unopened 50ml bottles for 90 bucks. lol such a steal imo. Stock is getting low so if you are getting into vintage masculine fragrences scoop the vintage up now even if you want to set it aside to revisit it at a later date after you progress in your fragrence journey. If you get on ebay, not ebay.fr, you can pick this up at a quarter of the price tag under Coriolan. Better and original formula. Not this repackaged rubbish.

This is Coriolan repackaged, I spoke with one of head Guerlain reps when I was in Florida, and she confirmed that it was. Great fragrance.

$300 for a 100 ML EDT bottle of Gurlain... it's better be a good one!
