L'Instant de Guerlain pour Homme EDP

A review born out of frustration: I will skip details of wearing experience to the extent that it is a fragrance all too familiar to me. I recently tested the new square bottle and, as expected, is fresher upon first spray but then it recedes to that comforting blend. But, as noted very below by a few members, it is not a reliable fragrance: indoors it does have projection but then it also tends to be cloying. Outside, or outdoors virtually disappears as it is losing each confrontation with other perfumes and various urban smells. Hectic weather nowadays worldwide doesn’t help either. I have a tester bottle from the end of 2016 so it is the less potent 3rd formulation according to affectionate LIDGE historians. Which gets me to compare with my old LIDGE sample: that had much better projection and also a corresponding sillage with half amount (3 sprays). Sadly the sample was ultimately wasted when the bottle containing it broke...As I kept the broken sample bottle I can detect nuances when compared to my intact bottle (in terms of gravity assigned to cacao and patchouli), which is as close to being objective as i desire to be. Because LIDGE is one of the very few scents which i can link to past ‘instances’ of my life, like for e.g. remember heading to theatre some 8 years ago. Wearing LIDGE was not exactly out of place but largely flooded over my theatre experience. There was no contemporary feel to it, and that was part of the charm. Since prices have been high for 1st formulation, i was contemplating to get the vintage eau de toilette but read somewhere that it is basically the now available L’instant edp in terms of projection and overall performance (even if notes and accords are somewhat different). With ‘not letting go’ being a constant cause of suffering I should also mention a happy or fortunate accident to which I really owe this writing: I have been using L’oreal Barberclub shower gel and deo because I love that cedarwood smell so one day I sprayed L’instant onto a leftover quantity of the just mentioned self-care product. To my amaze, it helped to keep the sandalwoods of L’instant sticked to the skin and improved overall performance. It has become a little more than a skin scent; moreover, it dials down that naughty character of patchouli (or which I associate with patchouli when smell it up close). Edit 03/25: Since last year, I have been using it alternately in spring and on rainy days. As a result, my bottle has gone below 50%, then 40%... and I have noticed an increase in its performance. While it generally stays within personal space, the sillage remains noticeable even after 5 hours. More importantly, the projection of the base notes lasts—something I was initially really looking for. It feels somewhat unsettling to claim that partial 'listerine' bottles represent the ideal version.

This scent will always be a masterpiece. It is intriguing, exotic, and utterly unique. Yes, there are similar scents - Pardon, Tempo, Coromandel - but none of them give me quite the same sensation as L'Instant. I was just gifted a 100ml of the new formulation and so I'm reviewing based on that, though I was fortunately able to sample the black sides version of LIDGE back in the day before it became so rare. The hype is absolutely justified for that scent - it is sublime, and yes, on a whole other level than this version. It is deeper and darker, with sharper edges and much more note separation and clarity. I would give my left nut to have a bottle and probably will one day seek out a vintage. However, that isn't to say what's available in stores now is bad - far from it. Though it is a step down from the sublime, it's still a beautiful scent. L'Instant brings to mind so many things at once. The immediate image I get is of a Parisian autumn twilight with a golden sunset...crisp, cold air, with a tang of smoke...and all the lights beginning to wink on one by one. The original LIDGE bottle represents the scent so perfectly. It feels as if it's emerged from the mists of Art Deco Paris, like a lost philtre concocted by some genius polymath designer to represent their vision of the "nouvel homme". It's incredibly chic, elegant, and, yes, so very French, in that it achieves a beautiful balance of elements - the warm, rich patchouli base is braced against the more astringent citrus and anise which is softened by the tea, florals, and powdery cacao. While it smells extremely French, there is also something so exotic and interesting about it. I'm reminded of the notion that Chinese silks, when they were shipped across vast distances on the Silk Road, were preserved with patchouli. This is sort of what I'd imagine they'd smell like when they arrived in Constantinople, bearing the imprint of the distant Chinese court, but faded, glimpsed through a coromandel screen. It's almost an Orientalist scent in that sense, sort of like a Western interpretation of what they imagine the East smells like. All that to say - it is a masterpiece of perfumery. Something that can inspire so many images, associations, memories, and imaginings, can't be anything but. I put it on my shelf next to Bois d'Armenie, Angelique Noire, and Bois Mysterieux as my personal favorites from Guerlain, and what they all have in common, other than smelling amazing, is creating imagery in my head. Painting a picture, making a mood, making colors and sounds and smells pop into my mind. If that's what you're seeking, look no further. If you're looking for a crowd pleasing, mass appealing scent, then you'd be better served by the L'Homme Ideal line. This truly stands apart. 10/10

Maturate Maturate MA-TUR-ATE! So, Ive heard that the current formulation of L'Instand de Guerlain edp is a "Shell of its former self,".... but OH MAN, if thats so, WHAT A "SHELL" IT IS! This fragrance is freakin' STUNNINGLY GORGEOUS and super complex! Thing is you must have a bit of patience when ya get a newer formulation bottle! When Id first recieved my (Square Bottle) about a month ago and sprayed it, it wore EXTREMELY faint and close to the skin lasting 3 maybe 4 hours tops! Id try it every now and then the first two weeks and it had minimal improvement, so Id left it alone in its box for another 3 or so weeks, tried it again last night for the first time and sufficed to say, its almost like a different scent all together compared to when Id first recieved it. L'Instant de Guerlain Homme has these amazingly well executed transitions starting off with this smooth yet bright burst of delicious candied Lemon (nothing at all sharp) and stays that way for a good 30-45 mins as the more "Gourmand" Nuances start to appear. Ya start sensing the smooth, rich Cacao along with the rich, Chocolaty Patchouli. Now, what (imo) truley makes L'Instant "Special" is definately the gorgeous, elegant classic Sandlewood which again, is done in the traditional, classic manner where its actually a "Creamy Sandlewood" and although I like the fragrance, this has ZERO Santal 33 vibes! The (Maturated) performance is night and day from how it was initially and while its not a projection beast, it definately does project well as Id done only 2 sprays on my neck to test it, then went over to my mom's about an hour or so later and she could smell it when I walked behind her as she was cooking and she actually said that it was "Strong." (AGAIN, this is while she was cooking cuban food at the stove!) Now, while I don't really consider this a strong fragrance, the smoothness may be deceiving me into thinking its less projecting than it actially is. Today I put on the sweater that I wore last night and can still smell L'Instant as some of the fragrance must've gotten on it when Id done just the 2 sprays my neck. Oh and on skin Im now getting 7 to 8 hours with a good 2 hours of solid projection. Ive been trying to keep my reviews shorter bc I too get annoyed when reading unnecessarily long posts, but theres so much to say and praise about L'Instant de Guerain that I couldn't help myself. This is at the very least a 9 outta 10 fragrance which is a super rare score coming from me, but the more I wear it it might just reach a perfect 10. Classic perfumery from Guerlain's L'instant and L'homme line: very well blended notes, and just absolutely nothing to hate on whatsoever. Off the top I get a fresh hit of citrus, which lasts maybe 1 minute and then I immediately feel with the incense and tea and pepper notes (the lemon does hang a bit though). My nose is probably recognizing the incense and tea likely because I don't wear fragrances with those notes that often. This may be the only part of the fragrance's evolution that I don't totally like. The anise is also definitely there. Licorice-like. I can talk about every single note listed as "being there" but that's just what's great about Guerlain: their notes are so well-blended that it's hard to say what's more prominent. Maybe 30 minutes later I'm only now starting to pick up on that kind of earth-woody cacao pod which, like most people, is my favorite part of this fragrance's evolution. If you're looking for a warm, comforting yet manly gourmand cacao note, this may be the cologne for you! I think the earthiness may be coming from the patchouli, although I could be wrong. Certainly powdery, deep, rich, and fairly masculine. Performance: This scent sits quite close to the skin but it has a nice intimate scent bubble. For a lot of people, this is a problem, but this description of sillage is exactly what I've been looking for. Not too strong, but not underwhelming either. And remember, nose blindness is a thing: 2-3 sprays if you don't want people to hate you. Audience: (UPDATED 12/1/2024) Elegance. I'm personally not within the age range to be wearing stuff like this but it's not completely out of my style. This is a fantastic signature in a colder climate for someone in their mid-20s (youngest). But I'm younger and live in a warmer climate where I reserve this for more special occasions. Most will enjoy this scent. Wearability + Occasions/Seasons: Don't wear this if it's too hot. More nighttime than daytime, but good for both. That being said, I wouldn't wear this to school for example. This just feels like a nice cool weather/cool evening signature that you wear to a formal event or something like that. PERFECT for dates or close encounters like that. If, however, you're not like me and you happen to be an adult, its versatility could expand to other areas, like just general casual wear, for example. OVERALL STATEMENT: I don't typically let performance cloud my opinion on a fragrance, and thus, I feel there is nothing to dislike about this fragrance. The scent is one of the best I've smelled, performance is great for ME, and although the price is steep at $145, it's pretty worth it. It has grown on me significantly.

It is indisputable that I like a perfume that catches the attention of other people, ladies in particular. However my main criterion of choice is that it pleases me above all. I don't really have a preferred choice by perfume type. I have no doubt that I greatly appreciate oriental woody and resinous perfumes. But my entrance gate is wide enough to let a good fougere pass by, or a pleasant chypre, or even a fresh citrus or aquatic. Guerlain L'Instant belongs to a personal section of perfumes that I mentally qualify as a pleasure generator for myself. It is not a scent that draws much attention in public, much less a magnet of female attraction. But it transfers an aura that "everything is fine with us". It gives us confidence and well-being and transmits it to the people around us. L'Instant can be an extraordinary therapist and for much more than just an instant. It just places you instantly in downtown Paris or New York. The fragrance is woody, full of spices and just a bit sweet. At first glance, and after 3 to 4 sprays, the power of citrus is impressive, with a light resinous aura and a soft anise gratifying sweet note. As this first wave slowly dissipates, chords of a light patchouli with some lavender and white flowers emerging, creating a captivating, manly and dignified scent. After this busy evolution, we entered a calmer phase, revealing a rich dark and greasy cocoa, as well as wood, both a more austere cedar and a more creamy sandalwood, accompanied by a strong and complex patchouli. This base extends itself through the drydown and is soft and warm, transmitting a firm and secure masculinity. L'Instant, even in its Eau de Parfum concentration, is not a performance star. Longevity is a bit above average, but the sillage is moderate and the projection is a bit low. Probably I would expect a bit more stamina from this star fragrance, but its undoubted elegance requires this type of moderation. I have both releases of the older square bottle and the newer taller flask. I don't devise any scent or behavior difference between the two versions, but I like the older bottle better. ____________________________________________________ Recommendation: This is a very good elegant and unique fragrance and an unexpected good value for money choice due to its intrinsic quality and affordable price. It exudes masculinity and confidence. The average performance may be overcome by a couple of sprays on the clothes. As far as I'm concerned it's a must have for me. Update: First wear and this is really growing on me. There is definitely a similarity to Ivory Route by Xerjoff and I think the patchouli base that supports both is a big part of why. The opening is different from most everything else I own, which is a welcomed relief considering how often I buy a fragrance these days only to realize at some point that I already own two or more fragrances that could be confused for the new one (I'm looking at you, born in roma intense, the most wanted, Code EDP, and myslf EDP!). This DNA is different. It's earthy and woody without being overly heavy or the use of booze - which usually places fragrances squarely in the "night out" situational category. I can rock this to the office, but I definitely have to moderate the number of sprays because the jus slaps off my skin and Im pretty sure any more than 3 will choke people out. Another interesting observation that is similar to Ivory Route: there isn't any vanilla in this, yet the Cacao pod note mixed with the patchouli creates a creamy/powdery sweetness in the dry down that could be mistaken for vanilla. That said, it's most definitely not and as much as I love me a good vanilla dry down, I'm thankful for the more green and herbaceous type of sweet dry down this offers because it's super unique. Also, the darker citrus (mandarin or bergamot, I think?) in the opening is really beautiful and plays perfectly with the star anise note. Both stick around longer into the wear than I expected given how they're typically used in most fragrances and I can still smell the anise (or traces of it) 3 hours in. In summation: this is a gorgeous fragrance that can be worn during the day or night in any season other than summer. Personally, I felt a bit silly wearing this in jeans and a sweatshirt while running errands, but i'd have no problem rocking this in a suit or business casual to the office. I'd also reach for this if I'm going out somewhere nice and tasteful for dinner... which I almost never do anymore because I'm a middle aged guy with two kids and too many bills to pay. But if you're 30 or older and going out with a date or friends to a nice restaurant, this is the perfect fragrance to match with a nice button down and a blazer. If not, you do you and enjoy wearing something different if you pick this up! Original comment: I like it. It's very similar to Ivory Route from Xerjoff. It's pleasant, not overly sweet and work well day or night during the cooler months.

This is my favorite from Guerlain. I’ll admit, I approached this one with caution. I was bracing for something syrupy and cloying. Cacao and patchouli both carry a dry, chocolatey warmth that makes them natural complements in the right composition, though if mishandled, they can quickly become heavy, syrupy, and overly sweet. Throw star anise in the mix, and suddenly it’s less “well-blended fragrance” and more “spiced chocolate sludge.” But L’Instant de Guerlain does none of that. It’s soft, soothing, and grown-up in a way that completely caught me off guard. The opening has this cool, aromatic snap. The citruses and elemi lift everything, but not in a bright, happy way. They don’t brighten it up so much as they add some air between the notes, keeping things from sinking too deep into sweetness. Lemon, pepper, and elemi all fuse into a smooth but sparky accord — sparky’s kind of a weird word, but I think you know what I mean. The cacao is there right away, but it’s dry and powdery, almost like shaved dark chocolate instead of a rich ganache. It mingles with the patchouli and the woods like it’s always belonged there. You catch traces of anise and smoke. Nothing loud or theatrical, just the right amount of mystery. As it dries down, the tea note actually becomes quite noticeable. I think it deserves more recognition on the note pyramid because I’m picking up a lot of it. And it works beautifully with the warm, slightly spicy base. The sandalwood and amber keep everything cozy without adding any unwanted density. After the first day of wearing this, you’ll know this smells like confidence, but not the kind that tries to impress anyone. It’s the kind of fragrance that settles in naturally and just fits. No drama, no show. To echo that, this isn’t a loud scent. You’ll catch whiffs of it as you move, maybe a trace on your sweater later in the day, but it stays mostly close, and I don’t have a problem with that. Nothing about this fragrance is obnoxious. Not even the performance. It’s a scent that does more with less. Some fragrances lean so hard into trying to feel luxurious that they end up over the top. This one doesn’t play that game. It’s warm and refined, layered enough to keep you interested, but never loud or desperate for attention. If Guerlain ever discontinues it, I’ll genuinely panic. Scent (on skin): 8/10 Scent (sillage): 9.5/10 Projection: 5.5/10 Longevity: 7.5/10 Value: 7/10 Originality: 7/10 Mass appeal: 8/10 Versatility: 7/10

So, please DO NOT judge Guerlain's - L'instant de Guerlain ph (edp) when ya spray it out a brand-new bottle like I did, or even during the first week after purchase. Thing is that this fragrance ABSOLUTELY needs a bit of time to "Maturate." Initially it was SOOO WEAK, I couldn't smell the Patchouli at all (One main reason why I got a bottle), it wore extremely faint and close to my skin, it lasted maybe 1 to 2 hours before all but completely dissapearing and so I basically felt ripped off. Well, now that Ive had my bottle for a couple weeks after introducing air into the bottle, the performance and actual scent has improved by leaps and bounds! While its still DEFINATELY NOT a "beastmode fragrance", it does now have decent projection where just 3 spritzes got me plenty of attention when I went over to my mom's house to visit. Also it now lasts a good 6 to 7 hours on skin and all day on clothes and smells AMAZING! What really sets this scent apart from your average "Woody Gormand" is the classic take on this Sandlewood note. Ya get the gorgeous, semi-sweet Cacao, a touch of the Patchouli and a TON of this amazing Sandlewood which is done in an "Old school" or classic way giving it so much Character and Class which truley sets it apart from any other Woody Gormand in my collection. Imo the Sandlewood is the prominent note for sure and it makes this scent smell Unique and "Expensive" which well.. it is expensive, LOL! This is the sorta "Majic" that you just cannot capture in a "Clone" fragrance, Now, although I love me a good clone scent (I quite a few great ones) None smell as "Expensive" or well blended as L'instant de Guerlain edp does which makes one understand what these YouTube reviewers mean when they say "There aint nothin' like the OG." A super classy, sophisticated, mature "Woody Gormand" wich is perfect for the office or even date night" and if the current for.ulation of L'instant de Guerlain had even better performance, Id have to give it a 10 outta 10 its smells so amazing, but for now it gets an 8 outta 10 in my book! I highly recommend it with the caveat that it needs to "Maturate" for atleast a few weeks before it reaches its full potential potential. This is exceptionally good. I own over 100 bottles of different perfumes and this is easily my top 5. I have quite a few bottles of niche, quite expensive fragrances some of which I like more when it comes just to the smell but the overall value here is super high. The quality, versatility, combination of notes and a very good price (sometimes you can find it even for ~55 EUR for 100ml) make me want to use it every day. It might seem outdated or out of fashion to some these days, especially younger people. Most likely because of the patchouli and lack of vanilla which is everywhere nowadays. But the amount of patchouli is just right and there's no need for vanilla at all. To me this is old school and modern, classy and casual - all at the same time, even though it came out 10 years ago. It's like a mix of something my father used to wear over 20 years ago with the sweet fragrances that are being released nowadays. I feel like I can pull this off on any occasion, wearing a suit for work or in a hoodie just hanging out with friends. Initially the patchouli takes me back into the past but then right away I get hit by the sweet cacao back into "now" and then the citruses with the tea do something amazing to this fragrance. It would seem that such combination has no right to smell good but it just does. It's definitely best suitable for colder seasons and evenings, but the tea and citruses make it a bit more casual so I use it whenever I feel like it. Gonna try it in summer too and see what it does. It stays on the skin almost for the whole day, projection is quite decent for 4-5 hours I would say. If you've never been exposed to fragrances from the 80's and 90's, I would suggest testing first. To me this is easily 10/10 and even though I'm not a "signature fragrance" type of guy, this is what I will smell like this fall and winter.

The first bottle I owned of this was in the older slender and taller version back in 2019. It was only a 50ml baby and I brought it after the comparison to Pardon. I still remember one evening dropping my partner st the time off to work, I applied this and omg the bubble wad incredible. I then owned the edt but didn't like the Lemon too much. Fast forward and i just got another 100ml of this. It doesn't seem as strong as I remember but it is still fantastic. Im confident after a couple of months it will perform better. This is a superb cool weather perfume, cocoa, Anise, patchouli, woody, slightly smokey with a dash of citrus. Although I do prefer Pardon i will keep this just for the price point. Now to get another bottle of Heritage EDP, try Vetiver Parfum & the new versions of Habit Rouge! Guerlain has always been quality stuff for a great price. This does contain a decent amount of naturals as with all their perfumes I've tried. As I wrote this I've had this new bottle for a couple of days, sprayed 2hrs ago and keep catching whafts which is great. I LOVE it. As for the performance I hope it increases slightly but im not too fussed really. For me I wear perfume because I enjoy them and love the art, I don't wear it to be invasive around everyone. In saying this, it isn't a good projector so if you want a strong dark perfume this isn't it. For me 9/10 - For it's class it's 9.5/10, could be better but couldn't be far worse. It's not super versatile outside of cooler weather so for that it loses a point. Bravo!

A genius fragrance, wearing this is a day-long master class in fine perfumery. It might also make one sadly aware that most other modern fragrances are just collections of laboratory aromachemicals, bowing to market demands to provide scents that last and don't change from what we tried in the store, effectively collapsing the pyramid of base/mid/top notes into the base. L'Instant EDP uses that pyramid like a magician, creating three distinct, gorgeous and intentional phases. Let's start at the end and rewind: the drydown is a delicious gourmand, cacao and vanilla with a grounding patchouli. Before that, the mid added resinous elemi, tea and spices to create a rich oriental phase. And when you first spray it on, you have impressions of all those later experiences, but layered with the bergamot and lemon to create a fresh/citrus experience with the rich Guerlain base beneath. A journey through three different genres of fragrance (fresh - oriental - gourmand), smelling extraordinary every step of the way - magic! I blind bought this with some other Guerlains, being impressed enough with the brand that I felt it was worth the risk, and being rewarded on all of them. However on my partner's skin, this one doesn't work. Her chemistry amps up the sweet vanilla in the base and creates a muddle, losing the distinctness of the notes and phases. So, as always, best to try on your own skin before you buy.

I made sure I tested both the EDT and EDP before my purchase, and I am glad I got the EDP. Its opening is rather rough but develops into a pleasant smell after 15 min and once you hit the 30min mark you get strong cacoa and a intoxicating addictive smell which is rather seductive. I have not smelled the original but a lot of people who have said this smells fairly similar and if you had not smelled the original you will enjoy it more. This fragrance gets a lot of flack by old timers in the frag community because it is a re-formulation, which is why the price is probably so low, making it one of the best buys out there especially since it is blended so well and it is such a high quality made fragrance with just amazing performance. The fact no one really wears it makes it an absolute gem as it is unique however, a rather established refined woman could pull this off. IMPORTANT EDIT: The decant I bought was a lot stronger than the bottle I bought, the chap off ebay whom I bought the tester from said this fragrance is like whisky it needs 1/4 used to get enough air inside for oxidisation to take place making the fragrance more intense. So for all those people whom have commented they bought a bottle and its too weak this is most likely the reason why.

As a 32 Year old male this is absolutely class! It brings the spicy masculine old skool (house of guerlain) together with the sweet modern adventurous man. Because of the spices and sweet, almost chocolate touch (tonka cacao), I would love to smell this on a classy woman. The performance is absolutely great! Every time i put this on it gets me compliments! It lasts a whole day on my skin and even longer on clothes. First 2-3 hours gives a great projection very fresh and a little bit spicy. Between 3-6 hours it calms down a bit but still a great sillage and projection! You get this classy gourmand sweet feeling. I think because of the wood accord it creates a smoky touch. This in combination with the cacao is lovely. After around 6-9 hours it’s definitely a skin scent but you still can get the whiffs from the middle notes😍 in the end it makes you fall in love cause of the beautiful patchouli that cuddles your skin the rest of the day. On clothes or scarf you easily can smell the patchouli a week or something. Conclusion: a great niche art fragrance from the house of guerlain. Definitely worth trying and great performance. At moments, the cacao–wood pairing gives a faint reminder of Nasomatto Pardon, though L’Instant stands apart with its smoother, more polished Guerlain signature. Overall, it’s a rich, refined scent: elegant yet seductive, gourmand without excess, and perfectly balanced between sweetness, spice, and wood.

@Flamma Like you said, you are a newbie. You have hundreds of reviews bellow, explaining why it is so great. But, at the end of the day, if you do not like it, that is perfectly fine. Just wear something else. Maybe it does not fit you. For some people, tailored suit will not be their kind of wear. Some people like more casual clothes, as well as colognes/perfumes. I include myself in that group also. For me it is one of the most beautiful creations, work of art, eruption of emotions, mind blowing, almost too perfect... but for the right occasion. You can not wear this if you like skateboarding or wear a hoodie or if you do not have some seriousness and character for this kind of stuff. I will give you example: If you see clean, well groomed old gentleman wearing nice suit, smoking a pipe you will say OK. If you see young lad in his teen years wearing shorts and baseball cap smoking pipe you will instantly see that something is not right in that picture. He will come across as a try-hard, fake, hipster kid. The beauty of this hobby, and it comes with experience and experimenting, is when you know what to wear in different situations. KR

Today i received my bottle which is recent square shaped. I still have LIDG EDT (not eau extreme version, never had or smelled it) version from naughties. I also have LIDG EDT modern version, JPG Kokorico and Diptyque Tempo. I am informing cos’ i ll compare LIDG EDP with these also. As a first impression for LIDG scent itslef is insanely good. Between all of above, scent profile is closest to kokorico with cacao profile. In this genre i can easily give 10/10 for the scent. it is beyond my expactation (i blind bought it) Moving forward to longevity/sillage section after reapplying to a total of 25-30 sprays throughout the day, i am still considering a big nose blind factor. Else; longevity/sillage is pretty low.With its infamous reputation about its lifecycle, i think i am decieving myself and going noseblind is not the issue. Tomorrow, i ll put it aside for a long period of maceration and visit it back later. Maybe i ll update my latter decision here. With all my experience i had today would i still bought it? Yes of course! This is a masterpiece. Forget longevity and projection and enjoy the first 30 majestic minute.

So I made a review on 27 July (see a few posts below)in the middle of summer and now that he temperature has dropped for Autumn I have been wearing this again recently. As I type this I am on 6hrs and it is wafting nicely every now and then from my chest but on the whole remaining discreet as it should. I am getting a sweet concoction (not too sweet) that is blended beautifully and can just make out the smell of cocoa and faint jasmine. It is just splendidly divine and I will be enjoying this all through Autumn and winter. I note that I did need to get some oxygen into the bottle for this fragrance to actually perform properly and that the opening is not great, its raw, starchy and really green but this disappears completely after 15 min and then the fragrance really changes to its sweet self 1 hour in. When applying I made sure I moisturised by arms and neck after a shower so that way the fragrance could settle properly on the skin to allow it to do its magic. I hope you guys enjoy it as much as I do! An amazing fragrance. :)

I've got this cologne probably almost 3 years ago. At the first, the smell was/is something just magic, this cocoa patchouli has been done before with scents like Kokorico by JGP, at the beggining of the millenium, but this is just more smooth, rich and classy than Kokorico. Now let's talk about performance, at the beggining this was moderate in terms of longevity, probably 5/6 hours, after some 8/9 uses in the last couple of years, this week I thought "okay, it's a good day to wear this fragrance", what happened next surprise the hell out of me. This scent with something like 12 sprays (on me and my clothes), and this beauty lasted the whole day on me, even when I went to bed, the smell was very present in there. Absolute masterpiece, my favourite from Guerlain and one of the best scents I have ever smelled (and I have more than 130 colognes, so I can tell that I smelled lots of stuff in the last 7 years in this expensive and stupid hobby).

Wow, just wow. That's the only way I can describe this scent. I fell in love with the original EDT (new bottle/reformulation). That one is amazing because it has as much elegance as it has versatility. Then I heard all this talk about LIDGE and how it used to be the holy grail for many. I finally got my hands on the EDP (again, new bottle/reformulation) and well.. I wonder how really good LIDGE was, because this EDP is magnificent. Anise and pepper enter quite strongly at the opening, but then it devolves into a cacao, patchouli bomb that is so pleasant to the nose it hurts. A hidden compliment magnet, too and at the same time a fragrance for the senses. Guerlain is truly one of the greatest fragrance houses of our time and releases like this are part of the reason why. RIP Mrs. Piquet, thank you for creating this masterpiece among designer fragrances.

Elegant patchouli done with style. I got hold of a vintage EDT formulation and was simply amazed by the effect it has on me as the wearer. The combination of the tea note and brightness, which is nuanced and just elegantly soft, captivated me. I started to put a dent in my vintage bottle, so I bought the recent EDP to spray more liberally. I am glad to say that they are very close. I feel that the differences are mainly in how the opening transitions and how the layers reveal themselves. It is a bit denser and not as bright as my vintage bottle. I expected this since it is EDP. I have the feeling that people genuinely prefer the EDT over EDP or vice versa are judging the fragrance critically instead of "effect for the wearer." I may get the current EDT later on, as this is just so satisfying to keep spraying over and over throughout the day.

In my opinion and that of my husband, this is the best male fragrance ever created, in the same league with timeless classics such as Shalimar, L'Heure Bleue, Heritage and Habit Rouge. My husband has had this fragrance in all its previous versions, including the EDT, but LIDGE (Eau Extreme, which was in the black-rimmed bottle) was the one I liked best. That version was the sweetest, which made it unisex. It didn't have the note of smoke the current one has; this smoke note sends the new version strictly into the male segment, at least in my opinion. The original version (LIDGE) was also the longest lasting and had enormous sillage. Now the current version is so watered down it barely projects and has a moderate longevity. One more masterpiece ruined by reformulations. Nevertheless, this is still my husband's signature fragrance.❤️

Blind bought a bottle and put it on today - holy smokes, this juice is sexy AF. The opening scared me because I thought I wasn't going to feel this at all, it was so much citrus and elemi. A mentholated cough drop. After 10 minutes I couldn't have been more wrong, the cacao in this is heaven, dry and warm. My 4yo daughter smelled it and said "cotton candy"... It's been 11 hours and it's pure gold...I'm going to reapply before bed. Just because. This puts so many niche offerings to shame. Evidence that exorbitant prices don't equal great fragrance. Easily one of the best fragrances I have experienced and it's SO inexpensive. I'm going to buy a drawer full of it. This is what Roxy Music's "Avalon" smells like. 10/10 4.5.19 5 sprays in the morning and it's still very powerful 11 hours later - +1 BANGER

"Someone left dark chocolate out in the rain...with the sweet orris icing, flowing down..." Iris is not listed as a note, but I certainly get that impression, and I think it's what contributes to that cocoa powder quality, with the patchouli further fleshing it out. This was great during the walk outside today in the drizzly weather, a snuggle time scent if you will. Sophisticated and deep, yet cozy as it blankets your skin. I never experienced the original iteration "LIDGE", but if it was better than this, then it must've been a behemoth because this definitely is a powerfully sweet, earthy snuggle on my skin. The price to quality ratio, as with many from the beloved Guerlain oeurve, is outstanding. I am happy I now have it in my possession. Here's to snuggly chocolately patchouli cloaks!

Great scent which opens up with a very realistic cacao note in a smooth, spicy, powdery fashion. One thing i've noticed about Guerlain is how well they blend their notes so that nothing stands out in a screetchy way. So admirable. French elegance and perfumer's wisdom at best. This is in the same vein as Dior Homme Intense, Reserve Privee - but this is cacao dominant, instead of iris, and more spicy. 8,5/10. Edit: I did a couple of sprays in my room and went outside. When i got home again i was greeted by the most amazing smelling place. I believe this is one of those that smell better in the air rather than up close. The patchouli combo with cacao is phenomenal! Performance is crazy after some months of maturation. 2 sprays is all you need. 10/10

One of the best scents ever created, this is the perfect fragrance for me. Right after spraying you can smell a lot of ingredients separately, which can be off putting, but after 30 seconds calms down and turns into a heavenly scent. The cocoa dominates all the way, the sandalwood gives creaminess, the tea makes it uplifting, the patchouli gives a nice depth. The smell is hugging you and and all who near you, with a warm, friendly and uplifting hug. To be honest first time I didn't liked it. Give it time, as said before it really needs to macerate for about 1 or 2 months, without 5-10ml from the bottle. This perfume only comes to life after that time. Sillage is very strong after maceration, longevity is 10 hours at least on my skin.

As a scent, it’s fantastic. The manly, confident vibes is inevitable. Dress up or dress down. The anise and black pepper are noticeable. It has a menthol thing going on that is great. Then, the very faint cacao. Unfortunately, on me only last 15-30 minutes tops. The opening makes you think that will engulf anything around but it goes straight to a skin scent very fast. Even if you go heavy on the spray, it doesn’t do the trick. I hope Delphine Jelk turns this into a Parfum. Habit Rouge Rouge Prive and Parfum have a great projection and silage. If this has the strength of Habit Rouge Parfum, it would be fantastic. I am only criticizing the performance. That’s all. The scent is elegant, classic, and it feels like is from another era.

Let me start with stating that this is a 10/10 It smells like minty patchouli mixed with cocoa and smoke. It has that signature Guerlain "dusty", maybe even a little bit old school accord. Very sopchisticated, intelligently done fragrance. It doesn't scream, but lasts for a long time. I always think about this as the classier, more elegant A*men. ( in fact, this is way better). This is the reference for sophistication. I also think that this is pretty versatile, I would use this in every situation except very humid weather. A Perfect 10/10, miles better than most "niche" ( Guerlain can be considered as niche, but this is also very affordable). I would highly recommend this to anyone. simply masterful.

This is a stunning scent, especially in the beginning. First note is reminiscent of snapped dark chocolate, but then that robust, licoricey star anise pierces through like an arrow. Subsequent whiffs evoke rain-soaked tree bark and amaretto coffee, and yet the scent never loses its cohesiveness as it plays out on the skin. The juice eventually fades into a more mass-pleasing cacao scent after the first hour or so, but stays on the skin for a good 6+ more. There's something enigmatic about this fragrance, I think it has to do with the fact that it presents itself so forwardly but you still find yourself mulling over its exotic intricacies. A big winner, IMO, probaly best for cool/cold evenings.

With all due respect, anyone who doesn't recognize the similarity between the discontinued LDG pour homme Eau Extreme and this LDG pour homme EDP doesn't know what they're talking about. This one is 99% identical, not only in scent, but also in longevity and sillage. I always think of orange/mandarin in the opening notes instead of lemon. It's definitely a warm and comforting fragrance for men, ideal for colder days. A citrusy opening and a not-too-sweet cocoa/patchouli drydown. What I especially like about this fragrance is that it leaves a pleasant scent trail that you can't automatically trace back to the source. It doesn't feel like a heavy blanket of scent once you've applied it.

I'm actually a bit hesitant to write this review. Much has been said, many love this, many feel disappointed after supposed reformulations. I don't want to go deep into the fragrance analysis, for now all I want to write is this: I LOVE Guerlain Lidge EDP and I have not received one compliment from it yet, nor have I smelled the original OG and that is fine by me. This fragrance makes me feel SO good on the inside. If a fragrance can give you a hug this would be it. I understand that the old batches may have been way better or longer lasting, but that should not keep you from getting a bottle or let people believe that this formulation is not worth the purchase.

I blind bought it and i don't regret. Such a lovely fragrance, perfect for dry cold nights. Maybe i'm tripping, but i felt such a melancholic vibe wearing it. To me, smells like an good old childhood memory - if that's even possible. About the notes, cacao, patchouli and anise are very present from beginning, and will last forever. In the first 30min, i felt a great dose of jasmine and pepper as well. Can't remember smelling something like this before. Only counter i can tell its about versatility. I can only see myself wearing it in a special ocasion when the weather favours. Considering i'm a brazillian guy, 100ml bottle will last at least 5 generations.

This EdP is one of the most glorious scents I have ever smelled. It's also by far the weakest fragrance I have ever experienced. Goes to skin scent immediately and disappears entirely within 30 minutes to an hour. I have tried a few sprays. I have tried a LOT of sprays. It makes no difference whatsoever. Nobody can smell this on me, unless they press their nose to my skin. And then it's still gone within the hour, even with multiple sprays in the same spot. It is absolutely ridiculous. What happened here? Did I get a bad bottle? How is anyone getting any mileage out if this? I don't get it. I got the new L'Homme Idéal style bottle. Batch 2E02.

Earthy, kinda old-fashioned spicy patchouli-cacao fragrance with a dash of smokiness and peppery, citrusy freshness. Kind of reminds me of DHI without the powdery iris. The more I wear it, the more I like it. Solid. Edit: I have worn this more since I wrote my review and it has grown on me a lot. What a masterpiece! So classy, masculine, and unique. I really like the combination of earthiness and freshness with a spicy kick. It has a lot of complexity and depth for being a relatively budget friendly fragrance. So good that I bought a bottle. The performance is not really as good as I want it to be, but it is still a 9/10 in my book.

Unique woody amber with warm spices, citruses, and patchouli, Fresh opening quickly moves into a warm spicy dry down that reminds me of root beer. Really love how the heart notes blend together to pull off this lovely smell. Of the three Guerlain fragrances I have, this one is my favourite. I would love for Guerlain to make a parfume of this, but considering hardly anyone ever talks about this one, I don't get the impression it's the most popular. Truly a shame. *Note: had to let my bottle sit for a couple months. Projects well, and lasts a good 8 hours now. You may want to do the same if you find it a little weak like I did.

This was one of my first fragrances when I started and I immediately fell in love with it. I'm glad that after years of trying things and hundreds of perfumes, I still love LIDGedp the same. Great winter/fall fragrance. It's warm, sweet but dry-sweet (not "wet"), and slightly dusty-earthy. Has a prominent Chocolatey note. Very sweet and pleasing, with a touch of sophistication. While the initial projection is strong for an hour or two, and it lasts all day on me, it doesn't project much - you need to be close to smell it. I had both LIDGE and LIDGedp at the same time, and to me they are thankfully identical. Great fragrance.

I loved the L'Instant EDT so I had to get the EDP. They're distinct and different with the EDT being more citrusy, fresher, and more versatile. This EDP lacks much of the citrus I love in the EDT and instead has a more prominent patchouli note. The patchouli drydown definitely reminds me of Diptyque Tempo EDP. If the EDT is a citrusy cacao scent, this is more of a cacao patchouli scent. A big overlap, but distinct. This would be great for a cozy fall or winter night. Very natural, well blended, elegant, and niche quality. Very lovely and elegant. Scent: 8 / Sillage: 8 / Longevity: 8

It is the fourth bottle from this house that I really love of it, I enjoyed all previous ones, so naturally I’m going to enjoy this one as GUERLAIN usually does not disappoint their admires. See you soon 🥰 Updat : Yes it is as I have expected it to be, wonderful and amazing scent. Opening spicy cuz of Pepper with lemon and fruit that make it smooth and dry with intoxicate of cocoa notes and touches of sandalwood, Tea and base patchouli, it is classic magical with very good lasts and Sillage and I do see without doubt is safe for blind buy, and I recommend to try it guys 🥰😇

Two things come to mind when referring to this fragrance: Exquisite & understated. This isn't something you want flying off of your skin. It is for the wearer, and the 'finder'. A masterful blend that, while it doesn't scream for attention, conveys to anyone that notices it a sophisticated edge. Cacao, and the supporting spices, are well grounded by the patchouli. Never seems as though anything is out of place. It is somewhat hard to put into words, honestly. Many in the reviews below mine here have done a far better job than I could ever hope to....

Harmonious and classy blend of dry cacao powder, subtle citrus, elegant (not dirty) patchouli, all on a base of masculine sandalwood. In typical Guerlain fashion, this composition showcases a history of olfactory mastery. This is for the understated. Those that know less is more. Men who don't feel the need to be the center of attention, but often are. Four season appropriate and a killer daily driver. Longevity isn't incredible, but not nearly as feeble as people complain it is. A stunner. Masculine. Classy. Timeless. 10/10

This is basically a re-release of the classic L'Instant de Guerlain pour Homme Eau Extreme (LIDGE) in a new package, just like they did with the original L'Instant. The scent is identical. It's extremely difficult to tell them apart. User (saatwik) did a side-by-side comparison in his review below. I, honestly, couldn't tell them apart by comparing this to LIDGE's scent by memory. The scent itself is a beautiful, smoky, mildly sweet & spicy, woody smell. Performance, just like LIDGE was, extreme!

This is an elegant and refined masterpiece from Guerlain. The sharp green-earthiness of patchouli is softened with the sweetness of cacao. The infamous Guerlainade vanilla/tonka bean is what you’ll smell after hours of wear, but not before smoked tea and woods tinge the senses. I love this one more every time I wear it and have recently put it in my top 5. I call this a “dead of winter fragrance” because it holds up well in the bitter cold of winter. A must have and a gentlemanly scent.

edp batch 9L01. refined, understated, charmer. often times, i find it a bit difficult to say why i love something. that je ne sais quoi which pushes me over the edge of like into love. guerlain fan here. magical "adult" smoothness defines guerlain for me. l'instant, out of the guerlains i know, is the most smooth and sophisticated. i have a bottle of "vintage" also. it is hard to say which is "better" by any standard. my life and my collection of fragrances would be poorer without them.

GUERLAIN L'INSTANT EDP 9/22/22 Masterpiece of perfumery! Smells divine for about 6-8 hours after just a few months of owning it. A must-have in your collection. I used to wear it at home at night, but now...I have upgraded it to a date-night fragrance. Sexy, cozy, relaxing, and delicious. And yes...I smell the listed notes above. I have the 'listerine' style bottle. I bought it from FRAGRANCEBUY.CA. Every single cologne I bought from them was authentic. Fantastic company.

Simply eye-crossingly gorgeous. A real chameleon of a fragrance. Sometimes the patchouli comes to the fore, sometimes it seems more cacao-esque. Other times a modern warm sweet spiciness shows its head. What's there it's the anise that I love from LNDH Le Parfum but dialed up a couple of notches. I can't get over how good this is. It's unashamedly classic, but modern at the same time. It's always smooth and elegant, and the longevity and sillage are excellent. Beautiful.

I tested this today in the store, after a few years of owning the original. Man this is still the same DNA, it's a perfect classy Guerlain fragrance. I would wear this day and night every day. This is definitely becoming my signature scent. I just hope that the bottle I order online will perform and knock me out as the one I tried in the store. I believe this has overall great sillage and performance, would rate it 8.5 But the scent is a pure 10/10, no doubt about that!

Man..what a shame..opens up almost identical to LIDGE but this one is gone off the skin so fast. The smell is great although not nearly as rich and intense but it’s still very good for the short run it has. I paid only 70 euros for a bottle so I can’t really complain. I consider LIDGE to be one of the best male fragrances of all time so having that in mind, the fact that L’Instant EDP offers me a nearly identical experience for 30 mins I have to rate it as a love.

Well this is a treat. For me, dry dark chocolate through a little smoky licorice spice and citrus jasmine tea freshness that's grounded in resinous sandalwood patchouli. Like Guerlain Homme EdP, this is a fragrance on the next level, with the rare and great combination of politeness, sophistication and fun. For you and your conversation circle, for people that don't need to yell. This is the first fragrance that makes me look forward to cooler days and nights.

Fantastic masterpiece by Geurlian once more.This is awesome smells somewhat in my opinion like fresh baked goods its a truly irresistible intoxicating scent that will have you sniffing yourself for hours after application.The compliments on this one are high if caught in the air by others only thing it can improve on is projection but it is by no means a slouch.Put this in a Roja bottle and this goes for £400 easy no questions asked.

Dear both reviewers and potential reviewers with performance issues, please note this fragrance needs time to macerate with some oxygen in the bottle for it to perform properly, its like a whisky which needs time to age but thankfully nowhere near as long! If you want it to perform really well right away get partially used bottle of ebay or a tester. Peace and if some higher being does exists may it bless you!

Master piece, artisan one of the best fragrance I’ve ever ever smelled. By the way i have in my collection chanel bleu parfum, chanel allure extreme, hermes terre d hermes fraiche, tf costa azzurra, jpg le male and le parfum, chanel blanche, hermes voyage, versace pour homme, ysl la nuit, all of them are great scents but this one blow me up. Heaven should smell like this. Pufffff what a hell fragrance !!!
