Halston Z14

At this point, I consider myself to be something of a Halston men's fragrance historian. The crown jewel and focus of that study, of course, is the masterpiece Z-14. I have owned all three major formulations of this fragrance made by Halston, French Fragrances, and finally Elizabeth Arden in antichronological order. First to come to me was the Elizabeth Arden version, purchased on red tag clearance from a TJ Maxx. It smelled like a tree shaped car air freshener with a chewed piece of Big Red stuck to the back. I wrote it off from that point until my dad came up to visit me and noticed it sitting on my shelf. He told me he used to wear "Halston" back in the day, so I gave him the bottle. He remarked that it didnt smell as he had remembered it. Over a year later and over a year deeper into this hobby when I had fallen in love with these kind of woody classic fragrances I read about the brutal reformulation that Z-14 and 1-12 overtook as the Halston empire crashed and the perfume portion was sold off to Miami based French Fragrances Inc, who manufactured the Halston perfume line through the 90s and early 2000s. I read that these FFI versions, which could be found very affordably on Ebay, were far better and more honest to the original fragrance, so I purchased a lot that came with a 75ml, a 30ml, and the Aftershave. Love at 2nd smell. The 2nd formulation by FFI is a chypre fragrance that boasts a great lemon/bergamot opening that quickly fades to a deep green cypress and leather beauty that lasts 10+ hours. It's phenominal, with only two drawbacks: 1.) It has that "cologne" note. There's no avoiding or sidestepping it, that alcohol/aftershave vibe is there, and a heavy dose will draw memory of a "cologne guy". 2.) I have twicedrawn comments from women a decent clip older than myself that I smell like their dad or ex boyfriend. To be expected I suppose. Finally the original formulation. I purchased a 3.9oz (weird, huh?) spray version with the atomizer that jets out from what is now the plastic cap on newer formulations. This version is much spicier and features a metric ton of oakmoss and leather. Barrel chested, brutal. It is hard to imagine Roy Halston wanting himself to smell like this, though I can imagine it was appealing to him in another sense. Unlike some other "oakmoss" fragrances, the original Z14 really does smell mossy. In conclusion and ranked: 1. 2nd Formulation (French Fragrances, Miami Lakes, FL) deep green beautiful crisp cologne that can be worn year round, and appreciated by folks of all ages. Unique and long lasting, this is an absolute gem and it is one of my top 5 favorite fragrances. 2. 1st Formulation (Halston Fragrances Inc, New York) A huge tiger in the jungle. Leather and oakmoss beast that veers a bit offensive to wear in most public settings. A word of art, but a hard one to pick up and spray yourself with 3. 3rd Formulation (Elizabeth Arden) Don't waste you time. Smells nothing like Halston intended and a waste of $12. I did briefly use it as a car spray, it wasn't terrible for that purpose. P.S., I can't speak for original Polo Green or the Floris this is compared to, but I do own Tom Ford's Italian Cypress and it's a beauty as well. It's smokier and richer than any of the 3 z-14 versions and I love to wear it. That said, if I had to pick my French Fragrances Z14 or Italian Cypress, I would pick the Halston that can be had for $25 on ebay for a full bottle. If the cologne facet of Z14 is enough to scare you off, the smoky, rich TF Italian Cypress is probably the way to go, it reminds a little bit less of a guy in an '87 Camaro.

EVERGREEN ITALIAN CYPRESS Do you want to remove a hint of sadness? And clean old wounds trapped in your subconscious? Nothing is more appropriate than experiencing an astringent, refreshing and invigorating forest aroma to open horizons, reveal your wisdom and endure your personality. For this purpose, I always pick up a scent with a strong cypress note. The cypress aroma is fresh, persistent, pine-like, resinous, smoky, slightly sweet, and balsamic. Encourages introspection, inner silence, meditation, and self-assessment. It is a tonic that reveals a sense of freedom and detachment. It acts as an oppressor and facilitates the path to a moment of happiness. I remember using this scent as a teenager, but I almost had forgotten about its dark green scent. I only rediscovered this wonderful forest scent a few years ago. The bottle doesn't look like a Tom Ford bottle, but it really smells like a Tom Ford, it holds like a Tom Ford and projects like a Tom Ford. Is it a perfume by Tom Ford? - No! It's Halston Z-14!... and yes, Tom Ford's much newer Italian Cypress is a lot like it. This is a timeless fragrance. Male woody, leathery and mossy "old schools" were the reaction of the fragrance community of the 70s to the citric, musky flowers of the 60s. Back then, this perfume went very well with short haircut young men who wore leather jackets, blue jeans, and Converse sneakers. These were the days of the garage dance parties where Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, and Black Sabbath vinyl were heard. And the scent was Halston Z-14. Let's look at my rating for this evergreen milestone: ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ - Opening: 8.5 (earthy cypress and somewhat fresh citrus notes in anticipation of a warm cinnamon accord) - Drydown: 9.0 (some remaining dark green cypress and spicy cinnamon amid seductive heavy moss and leather) - Longevity: 9.0 (above average; it takes 9 hours with 3 sprays) - Sillage: 8.0 (5-foot radius with 2-hour projection) - Versatility: 6.5 (good for home use, open-air activities, and little else) - Portability: 7.5 (use it in winter as well in spring and fall colder days) - Exclusivity: 9.5 (this fragrance is still unique and has some similarities with its contemporary but no longer available "Balafre" by Lancôme. "Italian Cypress" by Tom Ford undoubtedly also looks similar, but is 34 years younger and much more expensive) - Praise: 8.0 (masculine, classy, and catching) - Quality: 8.5 (above average) - Presentation: 7.5 (the flask has an innovative design but with its vulgar dark glass without labels, it looks a bit boring.) - Price: 10.0 (I felt like King Kong after paying € 11.00 plus tax for my 125ml bottle) ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ Overall rating: 8.36 / 10.00 between 7 and 8 = above average; between 8 and 9 = recommended; greater than 9 = don't miss it; My opinion: I recommend this fragrance. It is advisable for men who are looking for a woody masculine scent. In my opinion, it goes very well with "Encre Noire" by Lalique. Is it worth buying blindly? I should tag it with the "Try before you buy" flag but buy it blindly because of its current low price. It deserves to be part of any collector's shelf. (Review of the Elizabeth Arden formulation) Halston Z-14 is a fragrance often forgotten and cast aside by other giants of its era, such as Polo. In reality, this perfume launched an entire generation of spicebombs and thoroughly masculine scents, often referred to as "power scents." Gone are the days of 1 spritz lasting two days, unfortunately. While Z-14 has changed over the years, due to IFRA regulations and the brand’s sale over the decades, the current formula holds up well in my opinion. This also does not smell dated and old-manish, likely due to all the perfumes who initially mimicked its properties or drew from it. Unlike what some have said, younger men can pull this off just as well as older ones, but one needs to exude confidence and know themselves for Z-14 to really “work.” The cinnamon is not overpowering for me but certainly strong, so those who dislike the note should stay away from this. I would put this on about 10-20 minutes before seeing someone, as the top notes can be quite intense at first and overpowering to some. Z-14 opens with heavy cypress and lemon/bergamot notes and dries down to the potent cinnamon and cedar smells, with patchouli and vetiver on the side. The base oakmoss surely was more prominent before IFRA regulations and is now significantly weaker . The amber was probably stripped over time as well. I think many reviews calling Z-14 “long-lasting” are reviewing the original and FF formulas, as I would call the current type moderate, lasting at most 5 1/2 hours; but that could just be my skin chemistry. Sillage is enough, neither too strong nor too weak. Somewhat of a compliment getter, though guys tend to respond more than women do. I am surprised many people rate this as a day/night fragrance, and I disagree. I think this is best suited for late afternoons and evenings, with something fresher and less dominant in the day. Perhaps the real Halston would agree, as he intended Z-14 to be an evening perfume, while its counterpart, 1-12, was for daytime hours. It holds up well to hot summer nights, which is a benefit but is better suited for cooler temperatures. Pretty hard to beat it for the price. Even the 4.2oz/125ml bottle is $15 . Z-14 is a good lesson in understanding price does not necessarily equal quality. Despite me rating this partly as casual, I do not mean something like sweats or another kind of leisure wear. Something with a collar, whether it’s a polo or an oxford, will fit better with the scent profile.

(Review of an early 90s vintage) I remember being a young teen and walking into my grandparents’ home where it truly struck me for the first time that they hadn’t ever redecorated any part of their home in my then-short lifetime and likely hadn’t for a few decades because everything was... brown. The wooden furniture? Brown. The carpets? Brown. The couch with the terrible plastic covering? Brown. Dining room furniture and everything in it? Brown. The walls? Well at least the wallpaper was only mostly brown. Z-14 couldn’t be more of that era even if it tried. Christ on a bike, this perfume is 70’s Americana brown. Even the citrusy top is brown! Bergamot is given ample doses of anisic basil and aromatic cypress to create a very bitter, herbal, and resinous presentation. The heart is very spicy with plenty of cool woody coriander, warm and parched cinnamon, and enough top soil-like and peppery patchouli to create a whole other perfume. Brown. The base is an amber of earthy tonka, leathers, and benzoin - but! There is oakmoss, and a lot of it! But, uh, the oakmoss hasn’t had any rain for a long time so now it’s totally dried up and... brown. Honestly, I laugh every time I wear Z-14. It takes itself so seriously yet it is completely oblivious to its surroundings - e.g. unaware of this thing called “time” and that it’s stuck in its own. Do you have one of those friends, who wants to be very serious about something, but what they end up saying just makes you cackle? Despite not being on the same wavelength, I love the company. Z-14 is built incredibly well and smells of excess, raw masculine power, and sex. You’re going to feel like a million greenbacks wearing this, and you will definitely get noticed - for better or worse, perhaps laughed at for the serious statement. Laugh along.

Halston Z-14 is a brawny timeless classic. It's lack of elegance is part of the attraction. Not fancy, powerful up-the-middle strategy without need for West Coast offense aerial theatrics. Solid, no frills - though there are some blue collar bells and whistles. Cinnamon strikes deep into enemy territory taking no prisoners. To my nose, HZ-14 has a lovely hint of gasoline; the result of this cologne on the street is simple unstopability. *** Now, let's study the naysayers: squeamish men come out with various angles of banter against this frag. Are any of this multitude truly accurate? No. Some feel a need to spend on pricey more girly smells and are unable to realize that what they really need is in Halston Z-14, to help them mature, put hair on their chests and to enrich, by aromatherapy, with ability to come up with the right things to say especially when under romantic pressure. Other naysayers are cultishly trend locked. They simply cannot reconcile to a long-term known winner because without riding the finicky breezes of fashion flux, they draw snide comments from the lost souls they turn to for advice. Finally, there are the men who have traded away their man-card to fit in effeminate circles. These are especially terrified of Z-14!! Even a slight whiff makes them run for the emergency exit. Leather, wood - strong, and a very pleasant mix of fresh with depth of lurking Mother Earth process. Forrest floor slow rot mixes with a touch of gasoline, touched lightly with lemon. Don't fear this smell lads, learn to support it with character, fearlessness and the courage to be a man in times where most men are afraid of themselves, afraid of their own inner power, afraid of the consequences of ending culturally enforced whimpdome.

(Gatekeepers gonna HATE what I'm about to do...) My first experience with this scent profile was a decant of TF's Italian Cypress, which I adore. But I didn't really care to drop several hundred bucks on tracking down a discontinued bottle, so I did some research and found that vintage Halston Z14 is probably what inspired TF IC. $40 on eBay got me a mostly-full bottle of Z14 with a French Fragrances sticker on the bottom (scroll down to DawnyAllah's comment from 2/18/2022 for more info on reformulations), and for me, this bottle has been a wonderful find. I find the FF version of Halston Z14 to be verrryyyyy close to TF IC. There are many incredible discontinued frags out there for which a stand-in just won't cut it; but Halston Z14 predates TF IC by decades and largely replicates the joyful experience of TF IC for me, even if it doesn't smell 100% the same. The major differences? IC is a stronger performer and goes all-in on the cypress, creating a rich, zingy experience. Z14, comparatively, is ever so slightly tamer and calibrated away from the cypress to make space for other notes. That space is filled by a subtle yet unmistakably "vintage" accord, which IC lacks. Maybe it's the oakmoss, plus a drop of benzoin/amber in the Z14. (I'm not sure what oakmoss alone smells like, and I probably never will). Altogether, vintage Z14 provides a commendable quality on-par with fragrances that'll put you back hundreds at Ulta or Sephora. As long as I've got Z14 on my shelf, I'm happy to forego my pursuit of TF IC in favor of experiencing other parts of the fragrance spectrum.

Max G. is Max G. he is a very good perfumer who knows how to play with leather, incense and flowers. This perfume it's unisex, sorry gentlemen but unfortunately this perfume worn by a woman, especially in suit, it's "amor" instantly. I know a lot of men will say you have enough stop taking ours....well 😏 sorry gentlemen but this type of perfumes are like the female ones from 85-97 who were created for feminists, powerful, high career women sooo isn't our fault, as long as on the shelves of perfumeries brands are stubborn to put perfumes for easy women easy go, we need a new solutions to not fight for vintages every few months when we need a new bottles and this one is still on the market with the first formulation 🙃 we have no choice. Now about the perfume, on a woman skin the first base is about gardenia and basil very interesting and charming, the second base a little cinnamon with something floral I think some carnation because it's green, coriander and cardamom and a very few drops of jasmine and patchouli, and the final a very floral leather with amber. It's a cold perfume, very good for office. Now on a man, or at least on my husband skin, first base is very citrus-green and lavender, the middle base I don't feel cinnamon on him, I feel cedar, vetiver, a soft flower and a little earthy from patchouli, the last base it's a little oakmoss, benzoin and tonka, the leather hmmm not really but the amber it's there. It lasts for three years on both skin types and it's very powdery and close to the skin, very business.

Wow! This stuff is amazing! I bought this for my husband a couple of years ago as a gift. He has never been into fragrances too much, but he recently started wearing them because of family members giving them as gifts in recent years. I love this fragrance. I know that this fragrance is named after the famous fashion designer, Roy Halston Frowick. I had a bottle of the original Halston perfume for women when I was in my late teens/early twenties. I remember the line about Halston from the Billy Joel pop song, "Big Shot". That's what initially sparked my interest in his fragrances years ago. The designer, Halston, is also mentioned in the movie, The Devil Wears Prada. This fragrance is a beast! My husband generally leaves for work earlier than I do, and I can smell this fragrance long after he has left the building! I can also smell it on him after he comes home from work (though it is more faint), and I can still smell it on his clothing when I do the laundry! I can even get a faint whiff of it after I've washed his shirts! WOW! This fragrance is very masculine. It is spicy and woodsy with a little bit of sweetness. Unfortunately, it is not my husband's favorite. He thinks it's "too strong". His favorite is St. Bart's (Tommy Bahama) which is also a beast, but smells very different, of course. Our young daughter seems to love this Halston fragrance, though. She loves to use it as an air freshener!

If I had a dime for every time I read "IFRA" in a fragrance review where one pines for those classic fragrances (most often male-marketed ones) that have since become "shells of their former selves," I would be Scrooge McDuck. IFRA is not the enemy, it is the EU and their draconian regulations. For something still in production after all these years, Z-14 seems a bit worse for the wear, but it may not even be materials restrictions that have hollowed it out, but purely economics. The current version is a rather brittle citrus-cinnamon number, with none of that deliciously chewy, leathery-sweet labdanum and the fleshier oakmoss accord. Older formulations, until the 2010s, smell great, and there's surely been enough pontification online as to what versions are superior, what to buy, so on and so forth, and I just refuse to add to that dialogue. What I will say is this: these previous versions feel both burly and articulate, with a resinous evergreen cypress note propelled with spices and herbs, leading into stout woods and a luscious, sinewy chypre base. Relegated to the bottom shelves of drugstores and discount rack retailers in its current, feeble iteration, it was once a luxurious item, and it would behoove anyone who seeks to curate vintage masculine fragrances to seek out the vintages and enjoy.

This is almost an exact copy of Tom Ford Italian Cypress ... no this was introduced in 1974 when Tom was a freshman in Highschool – I only paid €14,- for a 125ml bottle, for double that price I have a 15ml decant of Italian Cypress – I hear Sebastian of Smelling Great Fragrance Reviews Youtube channel talk that he doesn’t like brands who make clones but he loves Tom Ford who also makes clones, his much loved Tom Ford Neroli Portofino is almost an exact copy of the in year 1792 created 4711 Original Eau de Cologne – my grandma’s favorite fragrance, if she would be still alive today she would be 120 years old, bless her soul – the prices of 4711 has gone up over the years, in the eighties you could buy it for less than 3 euro’s today you have to pay almost €11 for a 50ml bottle – a 30ml bottle Neroli Portofino is 10 times more for €115.... and this Z14 has only a score of 4/5 while Tom Ford Italian Cypress scores 4.25/5 apparently people like to pay a lot for the Name and appreciate more a fancy name than an old school fragrance which is exactly the same

I pay $15 a month for my cell phone. I don't care about cell phones and data plans. You are here because you like fragrances. Z-14 is like $12 a bottle. Buy it. My recent bottle is a beast. It lasts forever and is strong. I don't know what people are complaining about. Is there really that much variation? Crazy. Each time I apply this, a different note strikes me. The first time was a citrus blast on the opening. I don't quite get that strong of a blast anymore. Later, the basil whacked me in the face. Then again, cinnamon became pronounced later after having not noticed it before. I have yet to detect a strong leather note. Hopefully soon! It's a good scent. Classic. Somehow, well blended while at the same time the notes are detectable. At once sweet and herbal. Thanksgiving, Christmas, and St. Patrick's day in a bottle. Versatile. Just not for hot summer weather. Unless it's night time.

I'm a middle–aged man that slept on this fragrance back in the 90's—I simply did not understand fragrances in light of their depth like I do now. There are many "classic" fragrances that I'd gladly leave in the 90's, but this is NOT one of them. Admittedly, the opening is still borderline aversion–inducing, but after about 10 minutes, this fragrances could certainly fit within these modern times. In further stages of the scent profile, it becomes a matured, welcoming fragrance that has a unique sillage that will leave you smelling more classy than many present–day frag heads. I enjoy it most at night while lounging at home, while running errands and occasionally while dressed up in a suit. It is quite versatile, but it's longevity is short–lived, so it's best to keep a bottle close by for re–application. I've had multiple bottles, and presently you can pick them up for so cheap~

A timeless classic that still stands out as an uber masculine leather fragrance that exudes confidence. It opens with a citrus punch, but the musk and leather and cedar quickly make their statement. It's not sweet like so many modern fragrances, but has instead a dark earthy mossy organic smell. When I was young, my dad used to tease me telling me to stop putting cream and sugar in my coffee because grown ups drink their coffee black. I'm reminded of his mindset when I smell Z14, and I suspect this scent will appeal more to mature men than young guys. Longevity and projection are very solid and it's a real bargain these days. I bought a bottle in 2024 and it smells very much like I remember the original. Still well worth having in your collection today and nothing else I've come across smells like it.

Normally, I only purchase older bottles of Z-14 that still contain oak moss and tree moss. I've smelled the newer 'cinnamon bomb' formulation of the last 20 years or so and was never compelled to own it. However, we were in Marshall's today and there were two bottles on the shelf. The ingredient list on the box does not match my vintage bottles OR the cinnamon bomb releases. I sprayed it on my hand and was extremely surprised at how closely it matches the vintage scent. Gone is the chewing gum opening. It smells like Halston again... Iriomote commented previously about finding what sounds like the same version in early 2023. Does anyone know when this was reformulated yet again and if it's still being produced?

Oh this is good. The bitter lemon and bergamot mix with that cypress and hot damn I feel like a zaddy already. There's some extra green and basil in the open, but the cypress and lemon carry it. Moving into the heart I get some cinnamon, minty patchouli, jasmine, floral (geranium probably), MOAR cypress. Strutting into the base and ready for an early bird dinner special I get expanded patchouli, some oakmoss, cedar, and a somewhat smoky leathery tonka musk. This is really solid guys and can be had for dirt cheap. Who cares if it is "dated"? It is really well balanced and an awesome; it is an incredible bargain alternative to TF Italian Cypress.

I am not one of those men who can pick out every note in a fragrance. And although I can usually only pick out a couple of the more obvious notes from any fragrances, I am almost always very clear on an overall feeling. I cannot name for you the specific note that I am picking up from Z-14 but I can tell you that I can't get enough of it! Despite the list of ordinary notes noted above on this Fragrantica page there is something else that I am picking up that is totally unique and amazing! And the feeling of this fragrance? I can't define it, but I like it! At the very least, I can tell you that the fragrance feels completely masculine.

I have a super old batch of this from my dad, the kind that would linger minutes after he left the house. I've since been through bottles of this and the latest bottle is very similar. With that said after experience with other bottles, they take time to mature. Now they DEFINITELY perform...even this new bottle performs well, I even (as rare as it seems) received a compliment hours after. Newer bottles tend to have a more cypress/ green forwardness to them but after maturing the classic cinnamon becomes more forward. Yeah formulations change but all in all it's still that classic scent. Always a high recommendation.

Beware of the people crapping on this one (or many other perfumes) because of reformulations. I've never sniffed the vintage bottle. This current formulation (the one I own) is from 2023 and it's kind of a curious case. Sometimes I get a lemon starting scent and other times I get the cinnamon scent. And other times, I can smell BOTH scents from the start. In any case it's a wonderful scent that, IMO, is more versatile than many people think. We can easily tell that it's an old school perfume; but it's not far from the modern tendencies. And for being an EDC, on my skin, it last a long time. Totally recommended.

Recent purchase, new release. Despite the sequence of notes, cinnamon enters from the start with other top notes, and then after 15 minutes, as some of you guys noticed, it is uncannily similar to Eau Savage and this lasts for an hour or so. Z-14 is fresh, it really is. Cinnamon is not prominent. Although it is mossy, woody and leathery in the drydown, it still retains a bit of its freshness. It is quite tame throughout its life, losing sillage after three hours, staying skinscent for six hours. In the air it is absolutely delicious and general impression is NOT oldtimely. I will be wearing. 8/10

THIS IS UNIQUE; NOTHING ELSE LIKE IT. I just found my vintage 2.5 ounce French Fragrance made natural spray bottle with 20% in it (and 50%+ matching aftershave bottle). I also found an unmarked mini 5-7 ml bottle with a few drops left. The former smells a bit off at the beginning (like an ingredient turned) and then smells good after dry down, but a drop from that mini, ah, that's the juice I remember from my early 80s college days. I loved this unique scent. Oddly, sadly, after wearing it again after all these years, I'm not certain that I need to search for a vintage replacement bottle.

It's awesome. Lemon cinnamon and patchouli punch on the first sprays. Spicy green citrus at this point as the cypress and basil creep in, with the woods and light florals. People smell you and react nicely. 6 hours in the nice warm comforting slightly bar soapy greener and mild floral old spice/Cardin PM drydown of musky spicy ambery resinous leather kicks in. Bright opening and long duration at around 7-8 hours. Classic 70's vibe and still wearable today. Its strong, pleasant and develops nicely throughout the 10ish hour duration. Not bad for £20! 8/10

BTW, true story: when I recently bought the Z-14, there were two left on the shelf. The boxes were slightly different, but I could tell they were both recent batches. I tested them both. . . and they smelled very, VERY different. The cashier tested them with me and right from the start we could pick one smelled strong and amazing (a 2023 batch for those asking) while the other one was. . . very weak. Like I wrote before, I've never had the vintage one; but my bottle is probably way closer to the old stuff than the other one.

I got a vintage bottle Not sure how old it is but the box was almost like paper from all the time that passed I never tried it before and the notes pyramid wasn’t interesting but out of historical value and the good price I got it And it was wonderful Performance was good and projection was ok It’s a man’s scent no doubt about it specifically the cypress is the strongest No cinnamon at all Plus a dampness that is probably from the oakmoss Let me add it wears beautifully in cold weather

The original was way more complex. Now smells like cinnamon oil in alcohol and is probably not much more than that, possibly totally outsourced and unconnected to the house or entirely fake, either cashing in on a legacy. This is what Fahrenheit’s father wore. 2019 batch is smelling way better than when I got it. Lemon mostly smoothed out & cinnamon explosion off the top has chilled out. Result is very green warm aromatic cinnamon leather. Mask you Lynne. Not for sissy sprayers or hot days. Just buy it. If you hate it, try it again in a year or 2. Seems to be a common theme with budget frags that they smooth out over time.

Had 2 separate beautiful women (34 & 40 y/o) pick this out of a handful of frags after sniffing the atomizer. "Ooooo...." they said... Price does not reflect value. How reviews drip all over somethings like Bentley intense or endless middle eastern clones or redundant mall frag flankers & the 2 Halston men's frags from the 70s (shout-out 1-12) just keep rolling along for under $20 is beyond me.

I have both a vintage bottle and a new bottle of Halston Z-14. I wore it back in the 70's when I was a teenager and I have always had a bottle around. The new formulation is different but it is not so different that I do not feel like I am wearing Halston-Z14. This is a great classic fragrance and when it first came out it wasn't so affordable. Now it is so go grab a bottle.

faescen, I purchased a "vintage" off eBay. So glad I didn't spend much because it wasn't vintage, just the latest reformulation. You're right on your scent assessment and longevity and sillage are terrible. However, I purchased a Jeff Gordon set and it has that mossy kick Z-14 was known for. Longevity and sillage are much better. Brings back memories.

I bought it in 1986, when I was a high school student. I can say that this scent isn't for such young ages, rather than after 25 - 30 maybe. So, I don't know how smells now after reformulations, but I remember the amber and leather very clear as primary notes and a small hint of basil and cheddar as well. It was fine!!

Holy cow!!! I have this for few years,tested couple of times and forgot about it. Now in the cold winter night 45F, the cinnamon, cypress, and lemon is coming off so beautifully. Disregard the price this is one of the best in my collection. Not your typical young blue fresh boring scent. This stuff is so good!!!

It smells like an expensive, luxury soap to me. If Tom Ford had put out this fragrance back in 2007-2010, people would be swooning over it now. It has similarities with TF Italian Cypress, but it not the same scent. It actually reminds me more of Acqua di Parma’s Colonia Futura. It's old school and I love it.

Isn't this a Fougere/chypre fragrance? If the main note is aromatic then it's Fougere even if it hasn't got lavender because it's got the other two notes and basil instead of lavender. And it's a chypre too because it's got 3 outta 4 notes. So it's a wood heavy Fougere/chypre fragrance. Not leather.

Can't understand all the bashing of this frag. It's bloody amazing and the price at discounters can't be beat! You wanna smell like a man, not a mouse right? This is is masculinity unbound. This smells like a man who makes money. It almost smells like a wad of cash in the drydown. Money.

I must admit that I have come to the conclusion on this one and for example Boucheron Pour Homme that they are modern bathroom scents, sorry, but it's just the way it is. And so I use them as such and spray them in the bathroom, on a towel or something for longevity I guess...

All the men that I loved like my late husband and good guys, wore this it reminds me of discos, good times, art receptions, confident men, sexy men. So I just scored a vintage bottle for myself oh my God! This is wonderful. Takes me back still smells fresh and fly!

People say a lot of stuff about this. I have a quite recent batch... This is a masterpiece, whether you like it or not, whether the old batch is better or not. It's very good and also very important in history because there was nothing like it before it.

Cypress? Oh well, I guess I like cypress, and cinnamon, not too many perfumes with that. Yes, this is unique, have never smelled anything similar. Maybe not for summer though. I also adore Cypress & Grapevine from Jo Malone, so it all makes sense now.

This was my absolute favorite back in the 80's. The newer formulation is not the same and has a very heavy cinnamon top note. I was able to find a bottle from the early 2000's that smells like the 80's version.

This stuff is great for the office! I get compliments ALL the time when I wear this relatively inexpensive fragrance! Also perfect for autumn and winter wear! Lastly, the sillage is incredible!

Delicious and masculine. One of the best buys out there from the 1970s along with GBH Red for Men. Burt probably wore Z-14 on his road trips with Sally and Mel in his Trans Am.

I’ve used this fragrance for over 40 years and still love it. Go for the vintage version whenever possible. Current version has a cinnamon note that wasn’t in the original.

Spicy Citrus Fougere to me, not very Leather, it's a great energy boost in the morning. This juice is very good, performance is not great but splash it on and be happy.

I might like Egoiste more than this but the cinnamon note on this one is probably better than it is on Egoiste. Best cinnamon and also cypress I've smelt.

Smells like a beautiful, clean holiday mens soap youd gift the important men in your life at christmas. I will always have a bottle of this.
