Butterfly – Hanae Mori

I just received the EDT (pink butterfly) in a blind swap and I couldn't be happier! Especially after some pretty bad blind buys lately, the fact that I not only like this one upon first sniff, but borderline love it, certainly is a welcome change at this point. It doesn't really happen that often that I immediately like a fragrance. Usually I have to work my way towards appreciating new scents but with this one...BAM! Instant infatuation and no need to wait a while, while the nasty top notes fade away, try it out again under different circumstances, in a different climate, let it settle on the skin, etc.... Hanae Mori is just plain likeable from start to finish. No harsh edges, no prominent or weird notes that stick out or slap you across the face, just seamless, smooth, velvety soft sweetness that gently caresses you and almost wants to take care of you, give you warm milk and cookies, wrap you in a blanket and kiss you softly on the cheek. It has that kind of a maternal feel to it. Inherent kindness somehow. If you feel like being mean or bitchy this is not the fragrance to wear on that particular day ;) If I had to compare it to something, strawberry milkshake is the thing that comes to mind (mixed with magical happiness juice!). The kind you were rewarded with as a kid after doing a really good job at something! Heavenly. FYI I kind of get the comparison with Chopard Casmir, which I also have, but at the same time I also kind of don't get it. I mean I like both, but I like HM more. It is much smoother, quieter and easier to wear. Casmir could possibly be HM's bigger, louder, more obnoxious sister. You know, the one who wears too much makeup and blurts out things without thinking, only later to regret it. HM is more reserved, gentler, fresh-faced and innocent and would never dream of being inappropriate. The comparison with JS Fancy however I do not get at all. It has nothing in common with JS Fancy. I don't really understand where people are going with that one... Personally, I think it has more in common with JS Fancy Love if anything, with berries replacing the peach but the milky, creamy base remaining. Also, do not find it similar to VS Amber romance. Amber romance I don't particularly care for, it is much harsher and "in your face" imo. I would say HM is in a league of its own when it comes to sweet scent. Of all the sweet fragrances I have, HM (along with JS Fancy Love probably) is by far the best and easiest to wear, because of how subtle it is and because of it's creamy, non-bakery smelling sweetness (yes I'm talking to you Pink Sugar!). UPDATE 29/02/2013: So I think I have found a dupe for HM. Today I received Chopard Mira-Bai in a blind swap and to me it pretty much smells identical to HM (the dry down at least, minus the top notes), which might not come as a surprise since Mira Bai has been described as Chopard Casmirs little sister, which is also how I described HM, so accordingly there should be some similarities :)

I have loved Hanae Mori since the first time I snuck a spray in my boss's house. Twenty-five years later, and still I swoon. Firmly on my list of personal favorites, this also remains on the top of a list of dazzling scents that have been seriously underestimated, and will probably, and tragically, only achieve cult status posthumously. This perfume, once my signature scent, smells like the woman I always envisioned I should be, as I approached my twenties: Sweet and warm, strong and resilient, and ever so wonderfully composed, graceful like a lady. The fragrance had better success at achieving such virtuosity. I, on the other hand, struggled gaining any such refinements, and relegated myself to the reality of breaking gender barriers in various male dominated professions. Such began a woman's clumsy, and often unbalanced, attempt at shattering glass ceilings, while making it home in time to scrub floors. As a single mom, this also gave access to exhibiting both roles in parenting, and the freedom to express myself using any facet of voice from a spectrum that, so often, surrenders itself ultimately to the confines of nuclear-family norms, and role expectations. I say this all to emphasize again, how absolutely beautiful this perfume is, and despite a relatively heavy nod to femininity, smells fantastic on men alike. By in large the scent is woody in nature, but the kind of fiber that has been weathered soft; smoothed over its lifetime with friction, leaving its scent supple, and deeply warm. Sweetness develops with berry notes, balanced by their inherent tartness; macerated placidly with a touch of sugar and a radiant summer sun. There doesn't seem to be any real discernment in both woody or fruity notes, and not for one moment is Hanae lacking for it. Floral elements follow suit, devoid of a division between each specie. Possessing instead a common rhythm. Beating through the heart percussively, audible against the chest embracing you, while your own pulse slows to compensate. To be comforted so completely by a seemingly innocuous moment; the tender shared encounters, in turn manifesting the same characteristics in ourselves. That is what this perfume conjures for me. It reminds me to exist softly in my sanctum, and relate considerately towards others. It benevolently nudges me to be a better, kinder person. So maybe I was right to love this perfume all along. I suppose in the end, it gave exactly what I wished for, ever reminding me to shed complacency, and maintain the ambitions of love, tolerance, and a sound resilience to continue to reach for grace.

[This review is for the EDP purchased around 2014] I first came across Hanae Mori at a Sephora in Vegas, when I was in my late teens. The fragrance was still relatively new, and I remember desperately wanting a bottle but it was wildly out of my price range. I remembered the scent and purchased it over a decade later, and I’m pleased that it smells as I remember. Even now, revisiting the scent 6 years later, it still wears on me wonderfully. On me, this is forest berries (mostly blackcurrant) and vanilla almond cream. It is decidedly a gourmand to my nose, with no discernible woody or floral notes. However, the sandalwood and ylang ylang give the sweetness a dry quality that keeps it from becoming cloying. I have a hard time saying this is strawberry as it lacks the tartness that I associate with the fruit. Mostly, it is sweet, jammy, and a little musky, hence the blackcurrant. This comes off as fairly linear on me, as it stays in this cozy almond berry stage for quite some time. It smells edible, but thankfully not of baked goods or candy, just of something sweet and lovely in the air. With a light hand, I don’t smell any of the plastic that other reviewers mentioned, but I’ve found that scent develops differently depending on how much is applied. For me, this is quite a strong scent. A light spritz from more than 12 inches away on the lower body still envelops me in a cloud of sweetness. I am quite sensitive to synthetic fragrances these days and can only wear them cautiously, but this works despite being fairly intense. Because it is strong and feels quite cozy, it is a cool weather scent to me, but also lovely worn to bed. HM Butterfly reminds me of an 18 year old Japanese girl, on the cusp of adulthood. She is poised, refined, but still girlish and full of exuberance. She wears her hair long and straight with a barrette over one ear and just a dab of perfume, just enough to leave the scent of strawberry almond in the air.

Folks, this is a really (really) pretty sweet fruity vanilla floral. As I understand this fragrance, it comes in 3 different formats; EDT = "Pink Butterfly" (due to the colors on the box), EDP = "Blue Butterfly," and there is also a pure parfum 1 oz version. I'm familiar with the EDP/Blue Butterfly. I had this back in the late 90s. It was ahead of the trend for very sweet vanillic fruity scents that was about to take over the perfume market in the early 00's. I had a bottle and used it up way back then and soon became a fragnerd/collector and promptly forgot about it because it wasn't niche/exclusive enough... Anyway, that was my mistake... about a year ago I was thinking of this strawberry-vanilla-floral milkshake that I used to love and promptly bought a bottle for about $25-30. I mean, it's still really pretty and I still love it. It reminds me of Viva La Juicy Gold Couture (for a point of reference) but I like it tons better because it's slightly more delicate and airy. Also the bottle is beautiful and elegant and not ugly like those Juicy Couture horrors. Also, yes, it definitely also reminds me of Micallef Ylang in Gold. The ylang note does give it that banana-fruity tropical vibe. It is highly synthetic, as you might guess, but just thought I’d mention it. Honestly this is such a 'no brainer' pretty, delicate, little fruity vanilla number. It is impossible for those around you not to love the way this smells and I also love smelling this on myself. For an inexpensive flirty feminine fruity vanilla you can't go wrong 10/10. (The longevity is still decent -- it used to be a bit of a sillage monster and it's less so now but I would still rate it as moderate). I'm now wondering if I 'need' to get the pure parfum 1 oz.... I don't wear this type of extremely sweet (and let's be honest, very tween-20's vibe often) but when I feel like it, this really hits the spot.

Despite having no outright milky gourmand notes, this is strawberry marshmallow creme. It's a juicy berry fluff cloud with massive longevity and sillage, yet not cloying at all (I'm talking about the EDP, ftr). Literally don't bother with Burberry Her Elixir's doll-head Yankee Candle-smelling BS, just get this. Same with Kilian's Love Don't Be Shy; get this og strawberry queen instead. I left a review months ago for LDBS mentioning how much it smelled like Hanae Mori (even though it doesn't have a strawberry note), I almost couldn't believe it. The reviewer @eraksera is right, and I'll agree I'd rather spend money on this than shred my wallet for a bottle of Kilian (both are amazing fragrances btw, don't get me wrong). HM is just dreamy. It's girly and sweet, but not juvenile. Berries, subtle nuance of florals, and a fluffy woody base. Every once in a while, the combination of notes gives me a strong lychee note, which is unexpected, but extremely pleasant either way. I left a review for this in 2008, and mentioned how it reminded me of a strawberry field I passed by on a bike in The Netherlands. Still remains true to an outdoor strawberry field smell. It's so heavenly. Though it may be sweet, it works well all year round. I can handle it in a Texas summer, which is saying something. Hanae Mori fragrances are indeed becoming rather elusive, but this is not discontinued . If you can't find it on the gray market, you can find this on the Hanae Mori official website, which is where I got my bottle of Magical Moon. They ship very quickly from France. Oh, and yeah, the labeling is confusing with Hanae Mori. They call it Hanae Mori Butterfly, but they are referring to this either way. Just know that: Pink Butterfly = EDT. Blue Butterfly = EDP.

Hanae Mori EDP/Blue Butterfly is lightly gourmand powdery sweetness -- almost seems like caramel -- along with vague strawberry/berry notes, almonds, and sandalwood. Soft, sweet, very well-balanced and blended, HM is an absolutely lovely perfume! It immediately struck me as having the same confectionary/dessert quality as some Guerlains (especially Apres L'Ondee and L'Heure Bleue) but is less complex and intense. It's in the same soft gourmand genre, I think, as Jessica Simpson Fancy (which has caramel and berries, but is louder than HM) and Mariah Carey M (also a bit louder, but with a sweet marshmallow and light, smoky incense, which HM does not have). It's sweet-but-not-too-sweet, gentle, ladylike, powdery, comforting, and beautifully blended. The sillage is gentle on me, so this is one I think I can overspray without danger. I'm not sure about its longevity yet, and have been spraying it on at intervals, for the last 3 hours because I'm a fan of very strong fragrances; maybe I wish HM were just a bit stronger. But it's so feminine and pretty, I've been enjoying topping it up. I can see it being an easy, everyday wear for me, perfect for any occasion. I echo ViouAmara as she put it in her excellent review of HM, "This is a great discovery for me. Not a revolution, but a true little treasure in my wardrobe." It's a new, low-key love. <3 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Update: I love Hanae Mori but I wish the longevity was better; it becomes a skin scent, for me, after about 4 hours. So it's one -- for me, at least -- to spray and re-spray, throughout the day. But so very pretty. :)

I was wrong. My fragrance has settled down after the delivery, and now it only smells like JS’ Fancy in the first 5-10 minutes. It smells very creamy, comforting, sweet, and quite powdery as well - marshmallows, strawberry milkshake, berry cheesecake, cream soda - you get the idea. I usually hate the berry notes in fragrances, but in this particular fragrance berries just add to the overall creaminess. Surprisingly, there’s actually no vanilla note in this fragrance, although to my nose it’s the most prominent note. The wood base makes this fragrance suitable for all ages and for all occasions and keeps this fragrance from becoming a generic juvenile body spray gourmand. The longevity and silage are moderate. I imagine it would be a very safe blind buy, and a great choice for a gift - I really can’t imagine this fragrance offending anyone. It’s not bold, sensuous and loud. But it’s also far from boring and tame, and I imagine the woman who would perfectly embody this fragrance is calm on the outside and well-mannered, but very alluring, with the hidden side to her only few people know. I would not say I embody this kind of essence, but it has still grown to become my signature scent cause somehow I intuitively knew that this fragrance would suit me. Now I want to use up all my other perfumes as fast as possible, so others would only recognise me by this Scent. The name Butterfly is very fitting, the ylang-ylang flower makes it a bit warm and somewhat honey-like as well. A perfect flower pollen. Beautiful fleeting butterflies.

I had to have this based on the amazing reviews here. I chose Pink Butterfly Eau de Toilette based off of it overall sounding like it was better than the EDP. Instantly a favorite of mine. Smoky, creamy, berries. Not too much of any one of those, these qualities all work in concert to produce Hanae Mori. It's a heavenly smell, unlike anything in my collection. It's unique, yet familiar all at the same time. It's a masterpiece and I never want to be without this in my collection. Perfect for fall, winter, and spring and even a summer night when you want depth but coziness too. Sandalwood and berries are some of my favorite notes and I love when perfumes are creamy and smoky and deep. I love that it has blueberry and blackberry, which I don't see very often, in addition to the strawberry and blackcurrant which are more common berries in perfumes. I could see a woman of any age enjoying this. I do want to try the EDP and the parfum at some point. I'm also glad I found this because Coach Poppy Freesia, a similar perfume, didn't work out. It is also said to have the dollhead smell, which I definitely get in there. I can't really say I get dollhead smell in Hanae Mori. To top it all off, I can't believe this is so cheap, about $25 for a 3.4 oz ?! It does have pretty good sillage and lasting power, but I love to douse myself with it and I can thanks to the insanely affordable price. Thank you Fragrantica for leading me to this!

As an adamant vanilla hater, it’s surprising that Hanae Mori has been one of my favorite scents for over 20 years. I remember first smelling this in a Sephora in the 2000s but not having the money to buy it. I bought a bottle of the EDP for a steal ($22!) in 2014 and enjoyed wearing it. It became my signature for a while, and I think about it often. I dug up the old bottle today and am pleased to find it smells the same on me and wears as well as I remembered. I was quite distressed to see it’s now been discontinued and going for sky high prices! It’s a soft, cozy, sweet scent that is comfortable but not cloying with one spritz. Instead of cherry almond, this is strawberry almond tart with pastry cream. There’s no tartness from the fruit, just a slightly jammy strawberry. The vanilla is subtle enough for me not to be turned off, and manifests more as a slightly almondy pastry cream. The woody base is subtle and keeps the scent from becoming too sweet, but never ventures into masculine territory. The blackberry, blackcurrant, and ylang ylang blend into a soft musky backdrop that harmonizes well with the woods without being too funky. I haven’t tried the EDT but now I think I need to snag myself a backup bottle before this is gone forever. I have always loved this perfume and I think it’s time to bring it back into the regular rotation!

I’ve consistently worn this fragrance since 1999 and have owned it in EDT, EDP, and parfum over the years. The parfum version is the most creamy and beautiful, and lacks the dolls-head sharpness that is more easily detected in the EDT and EDP. Reading the notes always confuses me so much. I’ve never smelled berries, ylang-ylang, or sandalwood in this perfume. It comes across as a rich lactonic vanilla and honey gourmand, and yes plastic depending on the potency and how it’s applied. Personally I think this is a fragrance you spray once and give it a good half hour to settle down before going out in public. When I first wore this, I thought it was too cloying, synthetic, and mature for a teen girl but people went bonkers when they smelled it so I continued to wear it anyway. As time went by, I grew to enjoy it and always kept a bottle in my collection, mostly just to wear to bed for myself because it felt too loud and ostentatious to wear in public. Every guy I’ve dated has been powerless to its charms (even the ones who “hAtE pErFuMe”) and they considered it my signature even though I very rarely wore it. Now I’m in my 40s and still keep a bottle of the parfum on hand for those occasions where I crave its specific comforting vanillic depth, or I want a man to become obsessed with me. Either way, it always does the trick.

Vanilla Sandalwood with a Ylang & a Fruity Blueberry note... This timeless beauty was love at first scent for me. This smooth blend of vanilla woods, including creamy yellow florals & sweet fruits, puts an oily sheen on the skin and takes off once it warms up. I get a blueberry note with background fruits in the air and on the skin I get vanilla, sandalwood and ylang. Although it's fairly linear, in the drydown it takes on a brown sugar quality. Contrast to Vanilla Fields Coty: These have similarities, and both may be woody vanillas, but with an overall different impression for me. Hanae Mori is more vanilla forward and a heavier, smooth and sweet blend of vanilla woods & creamy yellow florals and doesn't have the solar or sharp qualities from bergamot and Lily of the Valley present in Vanilla Fields. Occasionally with HM I get a whiff of something slightly like bergamot, and I get why they're compared, but not similar enough to substitute one for the other. Contrast to Hanae Mori Eau Fraiche: If not compared side by side it's hard to tell them apart, however side by side the Eau Fraiche doesn't take on nearly as much brown sugar and has a few more floral touches. Both have fantastic performance. Overall: well above average performance, this is a classic woody vanilla I will always want in my collection. Enjoy!

This is a review for the EDP (blue butterfly) When I was in my late teens my best friend and I would frequent Sephora and annoy the workers by getting a ton of perfume samples that we never intended to buy. We were broke as heck lol. This one always hit me different. I would look at the bottle, smell it, get samples, dream of buying it... but at the time it was out of my price range. I think I remember back then (10 years ago) it was $60ish? I almost purchased multiple times but never did. Now at 28 it’s super affordable and it’s finally mine!! It’s sweet, a dash of vanilla, kinda lactonic, soft woods, gentile berries. I can totally smell the strawberry milkshake vibes. There’s a reason I loved this one so much. At first spray I had a huge smile on my face, it’s just dreamy and cloudy. Understated but present. I could see a lot of people loving this. It smells like a good daytime scent for work or errands. I’m a hair stylist and I feel this would be inoffensive for my clients while they are getting their hair done. Blue butterfly is so relaxing. I’d love for people to think of me when they smell this. Safe and easy reach. I imagine this being a good gift if you want to buy someone a fragrance but don’t know what notes they like. It’s perfect. Love love love her. 🦋

This review is for the EDT (pink butterfly). Hanae Mori fragrances are not easy to find where I live, so I can't compare the different versions, but I'm glad I was able to try this one because it's freaking delicious. First of all, the EDT is definitely not a dupe for Chopard Cašmir. It has a similarities in texture, and that's it. This isn't spicy and balsamic like Cašmir, it's fruitier and girlier, and I think it's completely possible to like one of them and dislike the other. Hanae Mori smells like strawberries, sweet vanilla milk, warm sandalwood and the slightest hint of peony and musk to keep it light and clean. It's creamy and milky, but also a little dry and almost dusty due to the woodsy base. I actually find it surprisingly multilayered. To me this definitely feels nostalgic, like some others mentioned, though I'm not sure what exactly it reminds me of. It just has that 90s childhood vibe, which I always love. If this perfume had a color, it would be pastel pink. It would match beautifully with a soft, fluffy sweater in any light color. I see it more as a cold season scent, but I suppose it could be worn almost year-round without turning on the skin, at least in milder climates.

This review is for the EDT, with the pink butterfly! So, so pretty. Honestly the only simply pretty perfume I truly love. It nestles into the skin all sweet and airy without being sticky. It’s a little desserty but not cloyingly so. The woody notes are beautiful - not a sharp and earthy wood, but something more flighted, like floating wispy incense trails amidst the sweetness of the vanilla and the berries. It settles into a creamy, soft, slightly artificial fantasy cloud of a scent over time and lasts a pretty decent time for an EDT, so for me it makes a great reach on days when I just want to feel lovely without thinking too much about it. I’m a 90’s strawberry fairy with pink butterfly wings, duh. Incredible value. Beautiful 90s nostalgia trip, complete with beautiful y2k packaging. Everyone who said there’s a little plastic doll head smell here was absolutely right, once I smelled it I couldn’t un-smell it, but honestly I kind of dig it. It gives an otherwise buoyant, innocently pretty perfume the smallest bit of edge. Like we all grew up curiously ripping the heads off of our toys but hey, we turned out okay. Look how pretty we smell!

This was my first ever perfume, and it was a blind buy when I was 15 (15 years ago). I bought the EDT and went through two bottles of it over the years, before purchasing the EDP several years back. As time went by, I found myself reaching for it less and less, until it ended up in the back of my linen closet, collecting dust. After stumbling across some comparisons between the EDT and EDP, I thought that maybe they really were that different and I should give the EDT another shot. Well, my package just came in and yep, it's crazy--this is what I was missing. The EDP sits incredibly close to the skin and smells too dense. It had a kind of...mashed feel about it. The EDT, on the other hand, is effervescent and lingering--it doesn't have monstrous sillage, but it does have a happy little cloud. It's sweet (but not cloying), warm, and smells fantastic on sweaters and knits. I am so happy to have this perfume back in my wardrobe and recommend the EDT over the EDP any day (which never, ever happens for me). I got the enormous 3.4oz for $30, which is a fantastic value, and this will probably last me for the next 5-7 years.

This isn't the sort of thing I usually buy. If I buy gourmands, I usually go niche because, let's face it, except for a few of the heavy hitters (Guerlain, Hermes, Chanel, Tom Ford), fashion house or beauty brand fragrances tend to be sub par to niche brands and judging by the packaging of this one and the fact it was first produced in the 90s, I thought it would be just another blah fruity floral. But no! This is fantastic. I can't believe it was launched in 1996! First, whatever the description says this is not an oriental, this is a gourmand all the way. Fluffy strawberry and what seems like vanilla but is probably almond mixed with sweet peony. I get a touch of cedar to ground it all, but my skin chemistry is heavy on the strawberry almond. It creamy, light, and delicious. I get the dollhead and strawberry shampoo references because this is more of a powdered strawberry milkshake scent than a fresh, tart fruit or even a boozy maraschino. It's innocent and joyful, if not a bit linear. And very modern for a scent that is nearly 30 years old. Impressed. EDP has decent longevity for a topnote heavy scent as well.

I really don't understand why Fragrantica hasn't made different sections for the Butterfly perfumes.This one should have been for those who had the discontinued Hanae Mori perfume as the name and bottle shown here suggests. And then we have the pink butterfly (edt) and the blue butterfly (edp) that followed and are still on sale to this day. Both pink and blue butterfly share the same dna, BUT: what lacks in finesse in the pink butterfly which in my opinion is a jumbled flowery mess with artificial sweetness you can't really discern and is in no way gourmand, the blue edp fixes. The blue (edp) is creamy done right, it is berry and gourmand done right, it shares the butterfly dna both (and I assume the original) have, it just has these tweaks the pink needed to go in the right direction of a true more elegant gourmand. If you are on the fence, go with the blue. If you don't like the blue I guarantee you won't like the pink, but if you have the pink and are unimpressed or feel that with some changes it would have been better and less artificial, definitely try the blue one. You are welcome :)

I’m not a child anymore, and this for quite a long time. So it can be difficult to find a sweet fragrance that suit my mood, my taste and even my mindset. Most of them are too flat, too candi like or suffer from a severe addition of « mature » (?!) patchouli, benzoin or spices. Or musks, and most of the time I can’t smell the musk more than 5 minutes on myself. Guerlain and its sweet-vanilla-iris guerlinade is of course a good option, but what else? The answer could be Hanae Mori. This has a serious fruity taste, with a mild woody base, just multidimensional enough to capture the attention. Not too heavy, not too light. Clean but not ethereal, intense but not intoxicating. Assertive but not agressive, cosy but not boring. It could please anyone at any age. This is a great discovery for me. Not a revolution, but a true little treasure in my wardrobe. Edit : So mild that it smells like a « sweet compromise ». I wear it when we are under pressure at work or if something is frightening me. Everybody like it. But I can’t believe there is no heliotrope and tonka notes in it.

I recently tried the EDP version at a friend's house when we were having a pool night. Loved it. It smelled like strawberry vanilla cotton candy (I guess pink cotton candy if I had to choose). I was cautious because this kind of scent can go haywire on me unexpectedly, but hours later it was still a lovely soft and sweet scent leaning more fruity vanilla on me than anything else. So I got a bottle. I couldn't remember at the time if I had tried to EDP or EDT so ended up with Pink Butterfly EDT. I recently re-compared mine to hers and do think the EDP opens a little sweeter than the EDT. But as others have said in previous reviews, the pink butterfly EDT dries down the same as the EDP in the long run and I could detect very little difference between them so if this kind of scent is your thing, I shouldn't worry too much about which of the colors you acquire, unless maybe you have an amazing nose. I don't. Pure casual fragrance enjoyment here. :)

When I was in my late teens in college I would pass through Holt Refrew (a high end Canadian department store) every once in awhile and bathe myself in this perfume. I couldn’t afford it so I had to make sure everything I owned was covered in it to satisfy my craving. I wouldn’t even look at the other fragrances. I swore to myself that I would buy it when I could afford it and I did and I’ve been wearing it ever since (20 years later). I wore it on my wedding day and I still reach for it the most. To me it is a creamy, vanilla with a hint of fruit. I was amazed to see that vanilla wasn’t even listed as an ingredient but I suppose it’s the sandalwood that gives it that effect. It smells comforting, feminine and soft, and it still gives me the idea of a beautiful rich woman like I used to imagine all those years ago. Luckily I can buy it at a bargain now online but it used to be a very pricey fragrance! It will always be a classic to me.

One of the only 90’s perfumes that I’ve tried that really work for me without reminding me of baby powder. This is a beautiful, expensive smelling ylang ylang flower that takes you on a little journey. When first sprayed on my skin, the most prominent note is strawberries and blackberries. It’s very pleasant and surprisingly very natural. After a few minutes; berries give way into a rich, buttery ylang ylang flower on a creamy sandalwood base. It makes me think of doll heads, but more refined, not plastic or synthetic. It’s what I’d wear hosting a tea party. I think it’s very well blended and feminine and it doesn’t feel overwhelming or lotiony. Longevity is incredible for me. I sprayed it before bed and it’s still hanging around. It stays pretty close to the skin, more of a hug fragrance than a projector, but that’s what I prefer. It is very unique to my collection and doesn’t smell like anything else, but it still feels very modern.

this is one of the first perfumes i ever had in my collection, due to the fact that i got it for mega cheap at a perfume outlet. i used half the bottle in college, forgot about it, then rediscovered it tonight (about 3 years later) while searching thru my old perfumes. this perfume is LOVELY. it’s girly and sweet, almost gourmond in a way. it has a scent that makes you audibily “mmmmm”. smells like juicy bright fruit in the opening, then dries down to a sweet fluffy creamy berry scent. it’s divine! very feminine and perfect for every day wear. also pairs perfectly with sweet whiskey by BBW- due to the berry and vanilla notes. i find it a lot less sour than other fruity fragrances like burberry her. this one has depth and dries down to be sweet, fluffy, and creamy. reminds me of a girl who wears pink lipglosses and wears satin pj sets to bed! shes feminine and sexy!!! get ur nose on it!!

I absolutely love this, but it's getting harder to find. FragranceNet was where I initially purchased it, but they rarely have full sizes anymore, and it's very pricey on eBay. I have the EDP and the EDT, I'm wearing both today. The EDT starts just a touch sweeter than the EDP, but pretty much the same, I usually layer the EDP over the EDT, as I did today. It's just sweet enough, just airy enough, just complex enough without being too heavy or overstated. It has a sweet yet powdery quality, yet with a crispness and the dry down is wonderful yet almost an entirely different perfume. Initially, and in the middle notes, it actually smells a lot like Burberry Her to me. I was surprised to see it debuted in 1996. It's way ahead of it's time, like the perfumer time traveled to the mud 2000s and was inspired.

(I'm reviewing the Pink Butterfly EDP, thinking Fragrantica must have this one titled incorrectly.) This one seems to change quite a lot depending on your chemistry and even depending on what you eat. A cleaner diet seemed to amplify the fruits on my skin, while carb intake and sugar seemed to amplify the sweetness and florals. It's vanillin-heavy, but I like that a lot. The sillage is good and the longevity is as well. It's quite candy-esque, but not in a headache-inducing way. The floral notes are fresh enough to keep this from becoming cloyingly sweet. The almond is especially noticeable to me, but the rosewood is also loud enough to be perceived. It is extremely well-blended and balanced. It's warm in tone and excellent for cozy winters.

I have always thought of this as a vanilla scent, so I was surprised to log in today and discover that vanilla isn't listed as a note in this perfume! It is sweet, almond vanilla cream, light ylang ylang, pink rose petals, and a smooth, soft wood pulp. I've had this in my collection since 2015, and now am reminded of how lovely it is. The juice in my bottle has turned a deep caramel color. A few years ago, this was cheap and easy to come by and I think that caused me to devalue it, but it is very beautiful and competitive with higher priced niche fragrances. I'm sad to see that I missed the window to stock up for life at bargain prices. Now I'll be sure to keep my bottle on rotation, but sparingly, as I don't want to run out!

To me, the only way to find a scent that fits you is by trying many different ones. When you find a scent that you kind of like you then can go online to terrific sites like this one to find similar scents. Then you basically follow a trail of scents related to that first one, some less appealing and some more, as you move closer to a scent that feels like it is made with you in mind. This is how I eventually found Hanae Mori Hanae Mori. The confusing mess they made of naming their scents notwithstanding, it is the scent that fits me better than any other I've tried. I love it and have stocked up with enough to last for a very long time (I have experienced the tragedy of loved products becoming no longer available).

In case you're wondering, this is the fragrance that many people call "Blue Butterfly" on account of the blue butterflies on the box of the EDP. I just scored two brand new, pre-reformulation bottles of this fragrance and both are in exquisite condition. I'm so happy. As a hardcore collector who likes her 'historical' gems, this was a no-brainer, and long overdue to join my collection. The smooth, vanilla-strawberry-sandalwood combo is full of character, nostalgic without being dated, and extremely likable. A good fragrance for any non-formal occasion with moderate to strong longevity and projection. I'm not sure how the original version stacks up against the re-release, but the old one is totally worth it.

This was a blind buy in rollerball form and I ended up getting a bottle and wear it all the time. I’ve never liked a perfume this much. This is a beautiful scent that I feel can truly be worn on any and every occasion including formal (or just any day). I usually wear it out on nights out, events, going out to dinner, ect. It’s honestly just so lovely. If you like scents that are more on the sweet /fruit-y/ vanilla-y side then you will probably like this. I usually don’t like florals that much, but this gives more like roses and baby powder. It kind of lingers on you in a way that is not overwhelming but also not gone in an instant. Butterfly is the perfect name for it. I love it. (Blue butterfly)

When I first sampled the edt, I wasn’t too impressed. Pink butterfly is reminiscent of Burberry Her, Love Don’t Be Shy and Bath and Bodywork’s Strawberry scents so not the most unique scent, but it’s really grown on me. Besides it’s the OG and more reasonably priced than Killian or Burberry and less generic than BBW. The notes that stick out to my nose are strawberry, rose, the elusive vanilla and sandalwood. Hanae Mori is iconic, plastic, candyish, sweetness in a bottle. I think it’s one of the ultimate comfort scents that reminds me of childhood. Perhaps a grownup Strawberry Shortcake doll in a bottle! Love it!

It’s so pretty! Not a edgy powerhouse or a typical fruity patchouli, however still very versatile and pleasing, not offensive. It’s very sweet but still unique smelling to me. Sandalwood is such a beautiful fragrance, and the strawberry and other fruits in this are very fluffy and dessert like. Still soft though unless you overspray. It’s not Listed but I swear this has musk as a note, or else it just comes off as a soft musky scent. Very good value online too. If you like sweet and pretty scents that aren’t worn or hyped by everyone today, try this one. Underrated but I suppose it’s not everyone’s type.

Congratulations to my friend below! I just did the same and bought a vintage bottle - mostly full (thank you Mercari) and am elated. This stuff has my heart. It's warm, sultry, cozy, sexy as all getup, and lasts. There is no real spiciness to it if you love orientals, no real food appeal if you're into gourmand, but it's a just perfect blend of feminine, not quite edible fruits and soft sweet florals that LAST; dressed up or down. Sandalwood finishes it off and balances it to perfection. Absolutely beautiful, blended perfectly. Worth the money if you have to spend a bit more due to its discontinuation.

i truly cannot sing this scent's praises enough! i blind bought this one, which is always a risk, but i'm delighted by what it brought me. the edp ("blue butterfly") is a very sweet, creamy scent that i can't get enough of. i've seen some describe it as comforting, and i would agree that that's a good descriptor—there's something very warm and familiar about it. i don't at all get the plastic tinge that others have complained about, but everyone's skin chemistry differs. for me, this is just a delicious powdery yet creamy edp, one which i'd definitely recommend to anyone who likes those notes.

My review is for the EDP (blue butterflies). This does indeed smell incredibly like Chopard Casmir! Which is why I LOVE it! 😍 It does start off ever so slightly fruitier and yes it is strawberry. It’s a bit lighter than Casmir but soooooo yummy. Not sure of longevity yet as I’ve only just sprayed it. I’ll update later. If you like Casmir you’ll like this BUT not quite sure you’ll need both. Casmir is a bit cheaper so if it comes down to cost I’d go for that. Very happy with my purchase and it’s all due to the reviews of you wonderful people. X

EdP version. There is a scene in Coppola's movie "Marie Antoinette" where French pâtisserie is being served: all pink, yellow and white with lots of vanilla, cream, berries, almonds. This is what Butterfly smells like. Very gourmand, just like Angel. But while Angel can sometimes feel a bit nauseating, like you had that one bite too much of rich chocolate tarte, with Butterfly you leave the table perfectly satisfied and with no regrets. My kids love it. It is my cold weather comfort scent for dreary days. Two sprays are plenty.

First wear, the strawberry and woodsy almond notes are dominant on my skin. This fragrance is so lovely for cold weather. It's comforting and cozy, but not too overpowering. This fragrance feels so me in that I picture a 30 year old woman in a cozy sweater with some black booties and a fuzzy scarf heading to work with her Creme Brulee Latte from Starbucks. I cannot wait to wear this fragrance again, it definitely deserves a spot in my cold-weather fragrance rotation. (this review is for the EDP version - blue butterfly box)

Your first love. A french patisserie. Silk, feathers, and pearls in a pastel rainbow. My first and favorite signature scent. Sweet, serene and innocent. The woman at the fragrance counter told my mother that ladies should take care when wearing this fragrance around men -- because it will drive them wild. I find this to be true but only if they are younger men with a sweet tooth! Layer this over the luscious body cream. Yummy yummy yummy gourmand!

Yea this is amazing... (EDP) sweet and creamy. My skin tends to eat up perfume and I still had a sweet creamy dry down that I could actually smell on myself at the end of the work day. The price is amazing.... It’s quite tropical and I think works for day or night. Sooo happy with this blind buy. Very feminine, not challenging whatsoever, a crowd pleaser. Nice for the office or weekend or vacation... it’s just very good IMO esp for the price.

I’ll echo Bois De Jasmin’s review that this is a French, fruit pastry with glistening glaze and mouth watering richness without being too food-like. Rich, fruity, creamy without being cloying or over powering. Soooooo gooooood. I find layering this with Stella edt brings a delicious lemon twist to it for when you’re looking for something equally delicious, but lighter. Like turning a butter pastry into a meringue or light lemon/rose custard.

While I'm not huge on very sweet scents- not because I dislike them, but because they give me the feeling of having eaten one too many slices of birthday cake- this is a long time love. Ylang, vanilla, sandalwood and an impression of berries make up this chorus. Hanae Mori mingles sweetness with warm, silken woods, subtle florals and near-tangy fruit. It's my perfect sweet scent: a yellow, woody floral that's delicious, cozy, and alluring.

This scent is so comforting for me. How have I not written a review before now?? I've owned and loved this for about 4 years now. I have the EDP. Berries and sandalwood are the opening. Dries down to a lovely almond-y, creamy vanilla and lasts all day on me. If I am feeling particularly anxious or stressed, a spray of this gets my heartbeat dropped and my breathing calmed. I will be devastated if I run out of this potion.

A lot of fun. Sweet, woody, sensual. Ylang ylang, sandalwood, rosewood with fruity touches. I feel a lot of fruits and they are full of aroma. Strawberries, blackberries. Yum. Young, deep and joyous. It reminds me of Miss Dior Cherie the first. The floral notes are well blended and adorable, the woods perfectly feminine. The top candy-like. Universal, fits any weather and occasion. Casmir is different and more wintery.

(Review for the EDP - Blue Butterfly) This perfume is soft, beautiful, and warm. It's an embrace from someone who truly loves you, or a beautiful day that makes you happy you are alive to see it. It's cute without being saccharine, but it's also elegant. I love strawberry perfumes and this perfume pulls creamy woody berry to me. However the notes aren't super separated and it all flows into one that is Hanae Mori.

I ADORE THIS! Please give this one a chance. I have the Blue Butterfly EDP. The first 20 minutes are not good (artificial berries) but then it melts into your skin. It turns sweet and creamy on me, the most prominent notes are the strawberry, almond tree, ylang-ylang & sandalwood. I think this is the perfect signature scent because it's so diverse. You can wear this year round, day or night & any age 🤍

I love this fragrance. An easy reach for me during the day, night, work, anytime, anywhere. To me, this smells like a soft and light glittery, creamy mix of ylang, vanilla (though no vanilla notes listed?!) and berries. This has been a part of my life since the late 90’s and will always be in my collection. I simply cannot live without it. A timeless beauty, just like Hanae Mori herself...R.I.P.

I am reviewing Hanae Mori, Parfum concentrate. On first spray, I get delicious lychee notes. The scent curates to a creamy, warmth of the skin type scent, with lychee tantalizing notes mingling in the background. Woodsy notes keeps Parfum version from being typical gourmand, and adds depth. I understand the Parfum version is no longer made. Luckily I have a good supply in my scent rotation. 💞

I have had this scent in my collection from about 1998. I buy the EDT and EDP and they are not identical. I love them both but the EDT is a bit more almondy than the EDP in my opinion. This scent smells edible to me so I put this in my gourmand category of scents. I like to layer this with Chocolate body oil and it smelled like chocolate covered cherries. Yum!

This is a review for the EDP. I love this smell. I can definitely smell the sweet notes and woodsy notes. I would describe this smell as almost sweet and spicy. It lasts a long time on me and stays smelling good the whole time. The only bad thing to me is I don't think this is a summer scent, otherwise it works best in moderate/colder temperatures imo.

This and Lolita Lempicka are two of the most unique and enchanting scents ever created. They are both very recognizable and not timeless at all, but very encapsulated; this is why they do not get the wear time they both deserve-but now that I am older, I don’t care much if it smells recognizable and I will be repurchasing both again and again.

Nostalgia in a bottle! I wore this as a kid, so it screams girlhood for me. I may repurchase one day just for the fun of it. This perfume reads very 90s and 2000s to me. I was still wearing it as recently as 5-6 years ago as a young adult, but haven't since then as it ran out very fast from persistent use on my part.

I have a bottle of Butterfly that is probably almost 15 years old at this point, and I still love it. Definitely get the dolls-head vibes, but this fragrance just feels like a warm, sweet, cozy hug. I second pretty much everyone by saying its the most vanilla you can get without any actual vanilla in it? Witchcraft!
