1922 Lily Sanguine

I’m not sure why this gets such ho hum reviews. I bought this way back in 2005 or 06 from Anthropologie. It was a blind buy, since I’ve never heard of this brand. The bottle is beautiful and looks amazing on my dresser. Now let’s talk about the scent, first off this last a while. I spray on yesterday afternoon and it the next morning and I still get whiffs of it in my hair. So longevity is really good. Sillage is close to skin on me, I get small doses of this fragrance as I move. It is a sweet fragrance but not sticky sweet, it’s on the gentler side. The lily is the front runner in this but again not spicy lily . I can’t say much about black locust because I’ve never smelled this before. This is definitely a feminine fragrance. Great for wearing to the office, s summer party etc. This I have to say wins for bottle style. The box it comes in is large and bulky. If you do find this at tjmaxx for ten dollars, I recommend buying it at this price.

It was a blind byu: I couldn't resist a good bargain and one of the brands from my beloved Anthropology that I wanted to try anyway in the future. So, I bought it. Even though I should think more carefully, because lily is not my scent. When I sprayed it on my wrist, I was knocked down: it was so intoxicating. Five minutes later when I smelled my wrist again I was pleasantly surprized: all those sharp nuances were gone and the scent started evolving into something more pleasurable. Twenty minutes later I wanted this smell to last forever. It's very unique: mystical, sensual, very feminine and sophisticated. Not annoying at all. Even my very picky husband liked it. And what about me: I'm absolutely extatic. If I'm able to get one more bargain, I'll definitely go for it.

I recieved a sample of this and sniffing it in the bottle I thought it was one I would never use but that bottle leaked all over my hand as I scrunched up my nose in horror that I would smell like the sour mess I had just scowled at. On the skin it was beautiful antiqued flowers and simply reminded me of charecters out of a Jane Austin novel. I savored every drop of that sample bottle and just when I ran out I found the full size at Marshalls. It is not a good blind buy because I wouldn't say that this is a perfume for everyone but it has a romantic overly polite air about it and on the person it smells great.

"Lily Sanguine"---what a bizarre bottle! I bought it blindly, as it was in a sealed box; I selected it because of the name, as I like lily scents generally, and I hoped that I could use it some of the time when I might otherwise wear my Donna Karan "Gold", which is an excellent, complex, true lily perfume, but rather expensive. And, of course, the brand name was a hoot..."Happ & Stahns"...Happ und Stahns...Happenstance...got it. Upon opening the box to reveal that mad bird sculpture thingy, I was, forgive the pun, not "sanguine" in my expectations of the scent...Hope springs eternal, though; and hoping that anyone who went to the effort of commissioning such an, er, ornamental container might have put in it a decent perfume, I spritzed a few generous sprays on wrists. Firstly, be aware that this scent, like many others that purport to be lily, is not exactly that: it's lily of the valley/muguet. While I like real, fresh, lily of the valley blossoms, I'm not a big fan of the perfume sort generally, although I don't dislike it as such. This one is ok, in that it is less cloying than many, perhaps because the locust blossom and neroli components are as present as the LOTV itself. There's not much else going on; the base kicks in eventually with a light amber-y/vanilla-y warmth. There is a sweetness to it that doesn't appeal to me, but it is not over the top. It doesn't rock one's world, but it's pleasant enough, and doesn't trigger nausea or headache the way some cheaper or synthetic-heavy scents can for me. It lasts a few hours, with minimal projection. (Longer on fabric, I noticed.) Over its on-skin duration it becomes fainter and rather soapy. I detest soapiness, so find myself re-spraying to avoid that stage. Overall, not awful, but not really outstanding in any way. I liked it better when I sprayed it on over lingering traces of "Encens Flamboyant", which amped up the complexity and cut the sweetness somehow, and will probably use it up faster than many other random purchases. I've removed the birdy sculpture since reading that it may "eat" the sprayer top, and will look around for a 5 year old who might want it...

I love both Donna Karan Gold and Ralph Lauren Glamourous. Both have very different, but lovely and long lasting lily. The lily in this fragrance is a yellow lily, and it is bright, a little sharp on opening, but quickly mellows. The orange blossom flower is sweet, and fairly intense on me; combined with the neroli this becomes intensely sweet, and prominently orange blossom heavy. But the lily, on me, never retires from the stage. As the sweet orange blossom and neroli combine with the lily, it takes on a sweet, warm, floral accord. Merging with the hawthorn it becomes smooth and creamy, while the black locust gines it a whiff of honey, and strengthens the white floral accord. Iris gives it a nice powdery note, more powdery than earthy, and the vanilla anchors the florals. Two or three hours in, and it is mostly lily and vanilla bean, lifting their heads above a field of white flowers. The resin is quite gentle in this, but ties it all together, and with the vanilla makes this a kind of old fashioned floriental. Silage and projection moderate, longevity 5 or 6 hours on me. Edit: I decided to edit my review to move my packaging rant to the bottom, so folks can get to the review without wading through my ire. I purchased this because I love lily, and it won the FiFi. Granted, this is a thin reed. I had tested and liked it, not sure if I would love it, but it seemed like a good add to my lily fragrances. That much is true. However, the fragrance industry needs to do some serious thinking about sustainable packaging. It isn't just the ridiculous, dysfunctional bird sculpture top. I knew about that before I bought it. But the box! Long after we are all dead, that box, filled with foam inserts, will be here. And the actual juice part of this perfume is relatively small, a short and squat bottle, perfect for storage. I think they should have NOT awarded it the FiFi precisely because of the unsustainable packaging.

Bought it as a blind, because I love lilies, and black locust blossoms too! Somehow the mix is too sweet for me. I'm disappointed in the tacky bird bottle, as well. I do get a bit of nice green freshness now & then. Lily Sanguine will get a second test, but, probably a return more than likely. If that green, fresh note stuck around...

This is very strong, the hawthorn is definitely distinctive. The bottle top is a bit cheesy but I like it just for that reason. The longevity is there. I sprayed it on a piece of paper and it was still pretty strong after a few days. I'm not sure if I absolutely love it but it's good.

Love the bottle. I bought it blind for 10$ at TJ Maxx. I like it but, I loved Bottle Caps candy as a child and this perfume smells exactly like Purple Bottle Caps on me. It does become more complex after wearing for an hour or so but, at first it is sweet, sweet, sweet.

Bought this blindly from TJ Maxx on sale for $10.00. It's very strong, and has a beautiful unique scent, but it is just too much for me.

Saw several of these in TJMaxx and Marshall for $29.99, was going to buy one blind, based on the reviews here, but luckily TJMaxx had one opened and I was able to test it. It was very unpleasant to me, I wish I could describe why, but I knew right away I would not be purchasing it. As for the bottle, I like the statuette itself but it just does not belong to perfume bottle, it looks tacky and out of place.

The bottle is quite charming. It's a bit taky not sophisticated enough but it looks great on my night stand. Looks more like a carving than an actual perfume bottle. This is totally unique in my opinion, if you don't k ow is a perfume it would easily pass as a house decoration. Now unto the scent. This perfume is quite complex it's got many layers to it. I would agree that is an oriental perfume. This scent is very sweet and it's dominated by vanilla and liliy. The effect is sensual and provoactive. This would make for a beautiful night scent. When i first smelled it I thought about Hawaii, i don't know why because I' e never been there. I could see one of those Hawaiian female native dancer smelling like this The scent reminded me of tropical aromatic flowers that bloom at night and give off a nice aroma that one can smell from the distance. Perhaps this flower has nothing to do with Hawaii but this is he mental picture that i got when I smelled this. The scent is smooth not synthetic at all. I was amazed at how natural it smelled. At some points you could smell the stem of the flowers too. If I had to compare this to other scent i would say that is similar to Kenneth Cole NY in the drydown phase. These two scent are not identical but share many similarities. Hope this help some of you make a decision. This scent has been discontinued I believe since i found mine at a discount store.

I passed up a bottle of this a couple years ago for $60 and regretted it. I hunted down a bottle and the cheapest I could find it for was $120. I wanted the sculpture on top and I found the notes very unique so I just couldn’t pass it up again. I really like this but it is what you’d probably call a “sweet, powdery floral”. Very delicate and refined. You can smell the hawthorn very strong. I wish the orange was a bit stronger but I can always layer it

First off, I love the bottle. I'd have bought it for that alone. Then the creamy, honeyed lily and iris is delicious. The black locust and neroli are just hints, sometimes I catch them, sometimes I don't. Usually I'm a sucker for vanilla, but this doesn't really give me any although it's listed in the notes. Instead I get a very fresh and creamy fragrance, like the first days of spring. I love it.

I'm hoping to be able to return / exchange this brand new bottle. After opening it twice, the top of the nozzle came off inside of the birds and I cannot get it out in order to spray it again. Additionally, it leaked all over the box. The scent is quite lovely - very vintage and woody - a warm take on the lily, but the bottle (though decorative and unique) has ruined this perfume for me. :(

If someone wants to dispose of ther empty perfume bottle, I am a bird lover/colletor of objectsd'art, and would love to take it of yor hands!!Thank You!!

AHHHHHHHHHHHH YES i have smelled this one before .... But I didn't quite like it
