L’Eau Rouge Nature

A year ago I was de-weeding the garden and had to pull a cherry tomato plant that was overrun. I became obsessed with the smell of the spicy, overripe vines and fruit that stained my hands and clothes and I’ve been chasing it ever since. So cut to now I blind bought this and the white cap version called “Heirloom”. Ive also acquired Corsica Furiosa and Trudon’s “Deux”, which doesn’t have tomato listed as a note but I do get hints of it there (both of these are amazing in their own right!). I also have decants of Min’s “Chef’s Table” and Aedes’ “Signature” (neither of which did it for me) ... all of this in an attempt to mimic the scent I encountered that day. Now with all of that said, I have not found it. But I do love all of my tomato adjacent scents. This one layered with a spritz of Mantes La Jolie is about as close as I’ve been able to get and I’m loving it for Spring. Heirloom is also beautiful... it’s fresher and slightly floral, while Nature is a bit spicier and earthier. But really they share the same scent profile. I’m happy to own both and do not regret it one bit. Truly the best Tomato scent I’ve found aside from these is a home scent from Christian Tortu, “Feuille Tomate”... it’s amazing and wish they would release a perfume of it.

Oh my god. Like YEAH! Tomato basil dusted in salt and pepper. Spot freaking on. This is unlike any tomato scent I have ever smelled. It truly smells like the stem and the fruit of the plant. I am immediately taken to the best pizza sauce I ever made, using just tomatoes, basil, oil, and seasonings as it smells just like this. Every so often I think I get a whiff of cannabis, but then I smell it again and find it is just leaf smell.I think that’s just how green it is. If you were looking for the most photorealistic tomato you will ever smell, this is it! Wow!

Even though this is supposed to smell like tomatoes, this is the best dupe I've ever smelled for CDG Rhubarb Sherbet, which is sadly no longer in production. It is more herbal though and tangy, and less creamy vanilla sweetness.

I believe Henrik Vibskov was one of the first to have his hands in the tomato note perfume trend that's sprouted in the last two years or so. I really enjoy his fashion and was so excited to try L'Eau Rouge Nature in his NYC SoHo storefront, as a tomato fragrance fanatic. Compared to some of the most popular tomato fragrances (From the Garden, La Feuille, Celadon, and debatably L'Ombre dans L'Eau), I would say that this is easily the most photorealistic. If you have ever wished that Diptyque's La Droguerie room spray was a perfume, this is for you! There's really not a lot to pick apart; it smells like tomato, basil, and pepper, and it doesn't evolve much over the day. I have been asked if I smell someone cooking while wearing this, before informing them that it's just my perfume! If you prefer a more "artistic" and less literal scent, L'Eau Rouge Nature might not be for you. For now, a tomato/tomato leaf dominant fragrance is a must in my humble full-bottle collection, but I think next time I will go for a scent with a bit more complexity. Admittedly, a large reason why I purchased this is because the bottle and tomato can it comes in is so freaking cute. Though at $127 for 50ml, it's a bit overpriced in my opinion. However, if you are really committed to the truest tomato/basil fragrance there is, this one takes the cake without question.

It's definitley heavy on the basil which I thought I'd like but I don't think I do. Attack of the Killer Tomatoes by Xyrena is more of an isolated tomato leaf scent, less peppery and not overwhelmingly basil.
