Dark is Night

I lean toward femme frags, but I do like complexity. For example, Nishane Ani was too masculine for me. If you review my collection, you'll see I own other complex vanillas like Diptique's Eau Duelle, Guerlain SDV, Guerlain Angelique Noire, M. Micallef's Note Vanillee, etc. I love interesting vanillas, but they do need to skew feminine on my skin. Opening: Dark is Night gives me the same feeling of luxury vanilla as some of the above scents, a lot of sweetness and a touch of powder, but a general sense of boozy, warm, Mexican/cooking vanilla. The patch here is a light touch (frankly, I don't smell it), and if someone told me this, instead, contained angelique or another floral in that vein, I wouldn't be surprised. It's missing some notes--there is more here than what's listed. I also get a bit of green quality, and I love that here. Heart: In dry down some powder appears--like a sweettarts vibe and I'm losing some of the initial booziness, so that's disappointing. It's also leaning into the secondary floral note (reminds me of angelique) a bit more. Close: After a few hours, I'm stuck with the sugary and Sweettarts vibe and all vanilla is gone. What a shame. This was really only admirable for about 30 minutes on my skin. Verdict: I wish the boozy vanilla opening stuck around. I'm testing in warm, Texas weather.

I can across the HR house after weeks of research in search of a perfect unisex perfume. Dark is Night is by far my favorite from the collection. Initial spray is very heavy patchouli, this seems to be a common theme with several HR fragrances. They open very green. Dark is Night gets rounded out with the vanilla note and it turns into a dark fantasy—an alluring, mystical experience without being too gourmand, too incense...too anything. This is a unique perfume to my nose, with only 2 detectable notes. A beautiful, simple perfume that complexes itself by nature. Beautiful, yummy, sophisticated vanilla. I hate overly gourmand, sweet, amateur vanilla’s/ambers. My mom hates patchouli but she didn’t mind this... which is saying a lot. Signature scent worthy, I’m thinking of purchasing full size but I still wish to venture out into more femme fatale, unisex, mysterious scents—but this is up there. Unpopular opinion but not just a night time, date night fragrance... this requires attitude and confidence. Not a girl next door, plain Jane parfum. TMI—this fragrance almost arouses me, perfectly unisex but I dare say more male, still... just a slight touch of femininity that carries seduction for the male gaze. I love this a lot actually.

This is an earthy, moody, syrupy scent with an addicting quality to it. You can't be patchouli-shy with this fragrance, but if you don't mind it, the patchouli in this is excellent. Fragrantica doesn't list some notes, including green grass, vetiver, and freesia. At first, I felt the combination of everything smelled vaguely like a "church perfume"--think incensey, waxy, cherry undertone, in a gothic way. And now that I've sat with it, it's really risen in my list of favorites. There is something about it that makes me want to smell it all the time. It's cozy and comforting, but has an edge to it--one or the combo of some of the "plant" notes smells almost minty at times. I don't get anything powdery about it, and I don't think it's limited to night time, but I definitely reach for it more on cooler days or with darker colored outfits :)

Another beautiful perfume by Henry Rose! DARK IS NIGHT is a sensual (think silky) vanilla-patchouli perfume leaning more vanillic. Other notes that are not listed here in fragrantica are as follows: Top- Green grass Mid- vetiver, freesia Bottom- patchouli & vanilla Don’t really get green grass in the opening, but I do get the velvety freesia and the vetiver gives it this kind of dryness! Overall the perfume is very approachable, soft and sensual. Think casual yet cozy fall date nights. I don’t see wearing this for formal occasions or fancy nights out... more cozy, comfy, cuddling-by-a-fire with a glass of wine kind of vibe! Longevity is pretty good, about 8 hours. This is my 3rd bottle from the brand. I also have Queens & Monsters and Windows Down— Q&M being my favorite!

Awhile back I ordered the sample set rich from Henry rose. I fell in love with Queens and monsters and ordered it. Well yesterday I was going thru my samples and put on Dark is Night. OMG I love this! I used almost the whole sample over the day and I was obsessed with smelling it. It is heavy vanilla, the patch isn’t overpowering, I don’t like when it smells dirty, it’s a little spicy, I don’t feel it’s too masculine, more female, and it projects and lasts! Still smell it this morning. I rushed to Henry rose site and ordered a bottle, I can’t wait for it to get here! While I wait I will get reacquainted with Queens and monsters, it got lost in the back of the perfumes lol. And yes I agree it is along the lines of TF black orchid which I also love, but more vanilla.

I love this fragrance, my husband begs me to wear it everyday. If you wear this you will get noticed. I have had sooo many people approach me out and about, even w/ masks and ask what are you wearing, you smell amazing! It is very patchouli dominate so if you hate patchouli do not buy. It opens w/ a green grass, then straight to the dominate earthy patchouli/vetiver combination which is really killer, it is so deep, earthy and rich. Then the vanilla combines w/ those notes to add sweetness and creates a very well rounded gourmand scent. I never wore vanilla perfumes until this one because they were always to much like cake batter for me. If you want a sexy, truly adult vanilla perfume try Dark is Night. A man or a woman can rock this perfume.

What is this sorcery?? I don't even like patchouli-heavy fragrances; dominant patchouli notes have killed otherwise great fragrances for me such as Music for a While (drydown smelled like wet, moldy soil to me), as well as certain Gallagher fragrances (their patchouli is almost "minty" and I don't love mint in my fragrances). But this! This is something else. It's so comforting, like a warm hug. It's a cozy, slightly earthy, slightly woody vanilla, and even though patchouli is ranked as the top note here, I can't say I smell it too much, it's very well-blended. Shame it doesn't last long on me though, not even on clothing :( I may stick to Char, which IMO is similar (I think it uses the same vanilla) but lasts much longer on me.

Full disclosure, I am not someone who can discern notes from a fragrance, and basically a novice. This is my first review on this site, and I am happy to do so. What I can I say about Dark is Night? It was love at first sniff, from the opening through the heavenly dry down. I cannot stop smelling my wrist when I have it on. I've learned not to wear it around my husband when I am "not in the mood", lol, and vice versa, since it works like a charm. I've had friends ask what I am wearing because their husbands love it. I have never received compliments like this in my life over a fragrance, but most importantly I love how I smell upon wearing it!

Splendidly seductive. Lush. The vanilla is more Mexican (sweet) as opposed to Tahitian (flowery). There is also another note other than patchouli, at least on my skin. Maybe some alfalfa hay? Definitely not herbal grass. Not green grass. Something more earthy, but not as earthy as Queens and Monsters. Perhaps a touch of clover? Not sure what. More complex than the profile listed above. A cool spring here so far and this fragrance has been perfect!!! Not a hot summer day scent. Will tuck away for Fall. Adore this scent! Body Creme is exquisite. Grateful that body cremes are available in this line. More lines need to offer body creme.

So far, this is the only Henry Rose that I like; the others I've tried barely have a smell to my nose. It's a great balance with the vanilla and patchouli. It's dark and spooky smelling; definitely a nighttime scent, reminding me of Halloween and fall, but cozy enough for the winter months. My skin amplifies patchouli, so it's most prominent on my skin, with hints of vanilla. On me, it has moderate sillage and longevity. The body cream is nice too; makes your skin feel silky and soft. Overall, my fave from the brand. Do try if you like darker scents and patchouli.

Dark is Night is the one of, if not THE most nostalgic fragrances I’ve ever had. It feels like a warm and spicy, yet sweet, patchouli laced hug! If you’re already a patchouli lover, you’ll love this. If not, Dark is Night may change your mind. A lot of my favorite boutique stores (that I’d loiter in as a teen) would often burn sweet/vanilla like patchouli incense year round. Dark is Night immediately took me back there. It’s a deep and sensual scent, that’s still easily versatile enough for everyday wear if you love all things warm and spicy!

I know some people are scared off by patchouli, but this perfume is just so dang good. I personally don’t understand that, in my teens in the 90’s I was straight up patchouli oil and Egyptian Goddess roll on all day long so I love when I find grown up versions of these. It’s a little sweet off the top and I smell cedar, like a sauna with fresh cedar wood, it’s like dry wood. The woodiness lingers with a super mellow vanilla. I am sensitive to fragrances , symptoms from asthma attacks to headaches . Most Henry Rose fragrances are safe for me.

I received the sample pack and purchased two full bottles now. My favorite is this one! It is so beautiful and am realizing that I love patchouli and sweet deep musky scent combinations. Still learning what works best for me. Not good enough to really pick out notes but it is so deep sweet patch dark yumminess. This is probably supposed to be worn in the colder months but I am going to wear it during the summer when I am primarily going to be in my house in the ac. It is too pretty to wait until cooler days.

honeyed patchouli—sexy, warming, addictive, straightforward but not simple. By far the best, deepest offering from Henry Rose. Dark is Night is intense without being overpowering or obnoxious, viscously sweet without becoming cloying (it’s not just for fall/winter), sensuously earthy without turning dirty. And in perfectly straddling those lines it lures you in. It’s perfect. Helped me return to patchouli after getting tired of 2000s fruitchoulis, and now I’m obsessed.

So far, I think Dark is Night is the favorite of my Henry Rose samples. It has a big opening with vanilla, patchouli and a pleasant balsamic chord (just as described), then dries down to long-lingering vanilla. It's not candy-like vanilla, but low-key, dry, and more sophisticated. My husband and son both said, "What is that? It smells so good". After applying it last evening, I could still smell a nice trace of vanilla this morning. This is a winner for me.

My favorite Henry Rose scent by far - but they’re all beautiful and smooth in a way that a lot of fragrances aren’t. If you’re not a patchouli fan definitely don’t try it (though there’s more to this than just patchouli & vanilla - per their website). But the vanilla is so warm and sophisticated...not overly sweet at all. It’s my signature scent for a reason. I want to smell like Dark is Night 24/7, seeing as it’s fitting for any occasion.

This is a pleasant, moody scent that is as earthy as it is comforting. The vanilla and patchouli are balanced well. Of Michelle Pfeiffer’s line, I’d say this one might have the longest staying power. This is a very smooth fragrance and easy to wear to many occasions (office, dinner, night out). I also find it solidly unisex. I was wearing it for a couple weeks before my mother and law stole my bottle, so I had to buy a second.

This is similar to Henry Rose Torn as it blends vanilla and patchouli. I enjoy the dry down on both. I'm on the fence about buying full size because I can't decide if the opening is enjoyable enough for me. I've tried all of the HR fragrances. Some do not last on me, but Dark is Night does. I bought full size of Torn and am considering this one and Flora Carnivora. All are longer lasting for me.

i’m really liking what henry rose has done with vanilla! this adds a little lightness to the patchouli but not enough to sweeten it. it’s a match made in heaven, these notes are soulmates for sure. it’s like tucking yourself back into bed and smelling your pillow after realizing you don’t have any obligations for the day. this is a vanilla i would mayyyybe wear.

My friend and I love this and we are not experts, but we smelled vanilla, lemon and coconut. In studying fragrances I like lately, I have found that apparently scents I favor have a touch of patchouli. This and Torn are delicious, yet warm and mysterious and subtle.

Smoky and sultry. Love this. Nothing offensive about it. It smells more complex than just the two notes listed. Mellow, nutty vanilla bean (not sugary sweet, fluffy vanilla) and rich (though mild and not "punch in the face") patchouli. Perfectly blended!

I love this. Immediately. And huge. I've wanted this for ages and it's even better than I expected. Rich, sexy, expensive smelling patchouli woody vanilla. Envelops you in a powdery cloud. Classier and sexier than lord of misrule.

I'm enjoying it so far. It stays soft on my skin. My guess is that this scent was made to not be cloying during a summer night. I like that. It has a winter gourmand vibe but subtle enough to wear in the summer.

Beautiful and very alluring Vanilla and Patchouli with the slightest hint of chocolate. Unfortunately on me it only lasts about 3 to 4 hours with little projection past the first hour.

Unique, tantalizing scent. Warm, woody licorice. Dense, calming, seductive. A distant, vaguely powdery waft of patchouli-vanilla dips in & out...a sensual tease. This is so good. 😌

This is the fragrance that helped me learn to enjoy patchouli. It's simple and warm and comforting and sophisticated. Not for those looking for something complex.

Kinda smell like Johnson's Baby baby powder when dries down. Not that it's a bad thing for me. I wear this mostly in the summer

This is a powerhouse of a patchouli fragrance.

I got the travel size of this and will likely purchase a full bottle. I wish I discovered it during the fall, ever since I have been in the hunt for a vanilla I love. Most are too powdery for me. Compared to the other Henry Rose fragrances with vanilla, this one is fresher and clean. Queens&Monsters and Torn and more of a milky and dirty vanilla on my skin. I will hold onto them to see if I change my mind come fall. This one opens up with a blast of earth grass and hint of smoke. At first I thought “what the hell did I buy?”. It quickly transitioned and became more fresh, and somewhat airy. Maybe the freesia? The patchouli in this does not feel dirty. As others have said, it is the type of patchouli even people who don’t like it will appreciate. Cleans and close to skin Blends beautifully with the vanilla. It doesn’t seem to project a lot which I appreciate because I can wear it to work. On skin it lasts about 6-8 hours. Absolutely beautiful. And I like that it doesn’t give people headaches, myself included. It does mean more masculine. From website and accurate depiction. So, I am torn on this one. Does it smell wonderful? For sure! Is it for me? Complicated. Context: guy in my late 20s. Although I'm a huge fan of unisex fragrances, and I even got a test sample, I still find myself conflicted on if this fits "unisex". I think there's something about the gourmand / vanilla of this fragrance that overpowers the patchouli and reminds me of a older woman's perfume, similar to something my grandmother had. Maybe the patchouli I wanted to be more present just isn't coming through? I don't know. So that's 100% on me, and I will find a way to make this one work. I'll ask more friends to smell it and get some feedback. However, this is still an objectively good scent! I appreciate the transparency from Henry Rose about ingredients, and it shows in the scents. I've seen good sales prices on the site, which is when I got this one (bonus points for first time purchase discounts, larger companies do that!). Overall the profile is intoxicating and indulgent. Would absolutely love this fragrance if I smelled it on someone else :)

Thick, chocolate cake-y, earthy, and sexy patchouli with syrupy and decadent vanilla. Easily my favorite from Henry Rose. It’s very rich and dense, but still light and ethereal (as most Henry Rose scents are) enough to warrant day time use as well. Usually I have a super in depth review, but as this is a simplistic scent, I’ll make a simplistic review. Super easy to wear patchouli, and a great introduction to the note for new noses searching for something patchouli. Completely unisex, and might have twinge lean towards night time for any occasion, but works especially well when going out and/or dates. Pushes off really well when dancing at a club, not that it matters but I got a fair amount of compliments this weekend when wearing it out. One of the better performers from Henry Rose, but projection isn’t a screamer unless you’re sweating. 9/10. F/W Signature Scent Worthy

To my beginner nose, there's some rose in there, a cold rose. The patchouli is not too earthy or dirty, this is not a hippie smell. It's very soft around the edges, I feel no sharpness. You're meeting Romeo in the garden on a chilly night. You're wearing flowy, light clothes. The roses are wet from the rain that day and the air smells sweet. It makes your heart beat even faster. The breeze feels like a soft, cold sheet on your skin. You're in love, but your heart is heavy. It's a lovely, lovely perfume. (Of note: when I got it, I was very surprised by the smell and wasn't really getting any of the listed notes. I didn't love it TBH. I put it away for a few months and just got it out again, just as the nights are getting chillier in my city. And I adore it now! Maybe it needed a little time to develop, or maybe I did.)

Just received my perfume sample box from Henry Rose. Dark Is Night is my favorite of all 5 scents and it opens with a huge amount of patchouli which I love. There is also a strong vanilla note right away and it dries down to a musky, smoky vanilla. The initial projection is huge as my husband could smell it across the room immediately after I sprayed it. The sillage dies down quite a lot after only 10 minutes and then stays just above skin scent. I've yet to wear it long enough to comment on longevity. Overall, I love all these notes and so I do like this perfume. For the affordable pricing along with the knowledge that these perfumes are supposedly free of harmful chemicals I would recommend this scent. I don't expect it to replace any of my favorite perfumes but it is a solid offering.

I like this, I get a little more patchouli than the vanilla. The vanilla is sweet, and the mix sort of reminds me of anise (moreso than licorice which someone mentioned above). I kept smelling my arm because it reminded me of something I had before and after a few hours, I remembered what it was - It smells just like Jimmy Choo Flash from 2013. I used to wear that in rotation back in 2013. It is a nice fragrance, but when I realized that, it lost its 'special'. I think all of these perfumes are starting to be remade/smell similar with different labels on them or smell synthetic/boring. I have not smelled an intriguing scent in a long time

I really enjoyed the Henry Rose sampler. This was in my top 3 - definitely the most sexy. I feel like this is a date night scent - so alluring I'd find it hard to wear in any other situation. Very warm luxurious patchouli and vanilla. This was the Henry Rose scent I have the most physical reaction too, like "Oh WOW, that is just beautiful" but as I mentioned, I find it hard to just wear it all the time. (My other favs from the brand were Torn - nice vanilla spice, and Windows Down - grapefruity )

Dark sweet licorice with a bit of spice. Think black cherry, or Dr. Pepper with a little vanilla and spice maybe. My daughter said it smells like candy. I don't think it leans too much towards any particular gender, unless you are not keen on oriental spicy perfumes. I actually find this too sweet to be considered "manly." I think it will become a favorite during the cooler months. Longevity and projection are pretty good.

On first spray I definitely agree with a lot people saying it's Flowerbomb. But I will add a much more mature flowerbomb (in a good way though) basically take Flowerbomb and remove the notes that felt very 2010 and add some more sophisticated notes. Its very lovely and well blended, I will say it doesnt feel unique but I want a few more days of wearing it to really say that.

A lovely scent from Henry Rose, a little warm vanilla that’s not too sweet- some spice notes, and a powdery lighter patchouli scent. On my skin it’s very sexy- a great date night scent. Moderate projection for the first couple hours, then more intimate. Not a super long lasting fragrance- I get maybe 5 hours.

Deep sensual vanilla and earthy patchouli. It’s a stunning and simple blend that I instantly fell in love with. It’s so warm, comforting, and sophisticated. This is what I imagine Dita Von Teese smells like; a little vintage and very sexy.

this dries down to be surprisingly beautiful & complex for only have two notes and doesn’t have that heavy sticky quality i usually associate with patchouli/vanilla combos. this is really nice! intoxicating & earthy

Green grass, patchouli and vanilla. Sweet, spicy, earthy, comforting - a scent perfect for September and October, when summer is on its last leg and the days are warm but the nights turn into sweater weather.

its alright... kinda boring but nice for layering. I wouldn't buy a full bottle when I could get three like three bottles of something more interesting for the same price.

I really fancy this type of patchouli Chocolaty earthy woody. Vanilla is just right. It’s not too much, good for layering.

Starts out a little grassy then becomes a very earthy, somewhat naughty vanilla. She cute.

The vanilla predominates over the patchouli, thank goodness (not a fan of patchouli, to put it mildly), but the vanilla has a floral quality to it--maybe jasmine sambac or something like that?--that projects a tad too assertively for my tastes. I'll see how I adjust to it (just put some on about an hour ago), but I'm not too optimistic. My husband said he could smell it from the first floor (while I was on the second), so I'm thinking the sillage might be a mite de trop for me. The drydown period does seem to involve a powdery note that I find very appealing. Still undecided on this one: I could grow to love it, or I could decide that it smells like the drugstore cosmetic aisle in 1993.

Dark is Night has this understated sex appeal that is simply irresistible. The touch of patchouli wins you over, as opposed to the overdose of patchouli in Floral Street’s Wild Vanilla Orchid. These fragrances have such similar profiles, I would consider this one to be Floral Street’s younger sister. When comparing the two, Dark is Night has a simpler composition and in my opinion this smells much nicer, smoother. I don’t hate patchouli as much with this fragrance.

For about 10 minutes you get a beautiful patchouli and vanilla fragrance, like a lighter version of Ani by Nishane. After that, if you shove your nose directly into the area where you sprayed, you might be able to detect a tiny bit of vanilla and balsamic vinegar. Anyone who pays $120 for a 50ml bottle of this is making a huge mistake. However, if you are that person, I have a bridge for sale. PM me.
