Torn

It is clear that there is more than just vetiver and vanilla in this fragrance. In the initial few minutes, I get a strong, sweet black current note combined with a considerable dose of patchouli. The patchouli is slightly spicy and adds a great deal of depth to the fragrance. Immediately, I am tempted to press my nose closer. In the mid stages, the black current note fades into a sweet, spicy rose. The rose is not jammy, old fashioned, or cloying. At this point, the vanilla starts to peek through. In combination with the patchouli and vetiver, the vanilla adds a creamy sweetness but this fragrance never veers into gourmand territory. I have to agree with other reviewers who have likened this fragrance to Black Orchid by Tom Ford. Torn is not nearly as intense but there are striking similarities. For instance, I find this one to be much more likeable because of the rose and vanilla- it's like a feminine leaning version of Black Orchid. The woman/man who chooses to wear this definitely has a strong sense of self as this fragrance has a lot of character. On a more personal note, I feel wonderful spritzing this on because it's not laden with a bunch of untested chemicals. That being said... the "clean fragrance" movement, while vested in some truth about health concerns related to chemicals, is also a bit of a marketing ploy. However, the fact that EWG Skin Deep database rates this fragrance as "safe" does make me love this fragrance even more.

“Sheer Black Orchid” I really like this. To describe in a jumbled way: it’s a mildy spicy sweet vanillic-woody-truffley-vetiver-patchouli. I would never have thought of the comparison on my own, but now that I’m seeing Black Orchid up there as the suggested similar scents, I do totally smell TF BO. It’s like a sheer, much less dense, much less sickening, type of Black Orchid. There’s no wonder I like this then. I used to adore Black Orchid around 2006-2008. This is less loud “look at me,” and more subdued and subtle. It’s comforting and mostly sweet with some spice & a dark woody vanilla-ish patchouli vibe but it's not comforting as in boring, it's definitley an interesting and niche/top notch scent profile. I'm kinda obsessed with this lately. I need a lot of sprays and think it's barely moderate longevity (makes it through half the day, to lunchtime maybe). But I'm smitten and am going to bring the travel spray with me when I need an extra spritz later in the day. I keep loving this more and more. Top favorite from Henry Rose. Scent: 10/10 Longevity: 5/10

Earthy, spiced, and sweet without being overtly a gourmand. Mysterious, yet comforting. True subtly with an edge. Henry Rose’s ‘Dark Is Night’ had been a long time favorite of mine for its nostalgic, sweet incense like characteristics, however pregnancy temporarily altered my scent preferences and DIN sadly became too heavy for me. ‘Torn’ however has been a lovely alternative. The opening and middle floral notes (specifically the rose) come across deep and dewy. The base notes that then follow with a dry vanilla bean, patchouli, and praline settle into a perfectly balanced earthy spice that’s ‘just’ sweet enough to make the mouth water. It’s effortlessly classy and wearable for all occasions. The comparisons of Torn to Black Orchid are fair, but Torn again is far more subtle in its approach. Torn is the black cat that knows it doesn’t need size to still swagger like a panther. It’s certainly sauntered itself into my permanent collection (and pairs perfectly over DIN). I hope it decides to stay for a long time.

Very, very pretty scent. I get a delicate violet here, like you took the violet from Celeste, tamped it down a bit, and added it to i Profumi di Firenze’s Vaniglia del Madagascar (another one of my favorite spring time vanillas). Torn warms up beautifully on the skin; it starts out a bit greener, spicier and damp even- like a walled, shady, backyard garden. Then after 1-2 hours it really becomes this warm, golden vanilla. Still with a touch of the violet and earthy greenness. Like a sugar cube crumbling into a violet green tea. The only gripe I have is the lasting power- 4 hours tops and the silage is pretty much within arms length for the first two hours, and then a really close bubble- not quite a skin scent- for the last two. I’m really debating a full bottle of this- not every fragrance needs to be beast mode. This fits my delicate, confectionary, garden-fairy-at-a-tea-party spring vibe 🌾🫖🧚🏽🍭💐🧁

So delicious and sophisticated. I got so many compliments on this scent every time I wore it. It opens very bright but once it dries down, it mellows out into a sexy, earthy vanilla that isn’t sweet at all. If you loved smelling vanilla extract as a kid but you’re not a gourmand lover now, this could be the one for you. I usually love gourmands, the sweeter the better, but this was my intro to more unisex woody fragrances. It feels like sitting by the fireplace in a clean, cozy house while you can just barely smell the warm cookies on the table behind you. It is a bit of a higher price point, but I felt like it was worth it because of how it lasts all day without losing any sillage. A little goes a long way and a few sprays will last you all day without overpowering the noses of everybody with whom you might have to share an elevator.

If you like Angel Muse, I think you'll really like Torn. It's something about the sweetness combined with the vetiver that you get in both, although in AM it's cocoa/hazelnut, and here it's vanilla. This is also reportedly Michelle Pfeiffer's personal favorite out of all of the Henry Rose perfumes (this is her company). She's all about cruelty free, hypoallergenic, no parabens/phalates/formaldehyde, no known/suspected carcinogens, nor known/suspected endocrine disruptors. All pretty great things! This line feels very Le Labo-like, which is also interesting. I bought the $20 set of samples (a good deal) along with a full-size of Dark is Night (a vanilla/patchouli blend that reminds me of a vanillic Santal 33 for some reason). Shipping was super-fast after I ordered. I'm excited to try all of the rest!

I ordered the sample set and am glad I did. I expected to like a few of the others the best, but this was the winner for me. A Spicy vanilla scent that is really aromatic and vanilla-centric, which doesn't sound like it would work...but it does. It lasted pretty well for being a clean perfume. Wear it with a vetyver or vanilla lotion to help it last. Even though it has patchouli in it, a patch lotion overpowers the perfume. I do like clean perfumes, as I tend to get rashy, often from dupes/extraits. Oakcha and Dua are the worst in that department - who really knows what's in them. I would recommend buying the sample set to try them first. You might be surprised by what turns out to be your favourite. If you like vanilla, you should like this one.

I don't know why the note pyramid here is not the same as on the Henry Rose website, which lists florals both at the top (muguet, freesia) and at the heart (rose, violet, and jasmine), but the spring-like floral notes are certainly present in the opening of this marvelous fragrance from Henry Rose. I would not describe this as linear at all; but this develops very quickly, however, and the vanilla slightly sweetening the florals comes to dominate, with vetiver and patchouli and sandalwood all at the base as the florals disappear. This is such a great list of notes for me that it seems almost inevitable I would like this as much as I do. A very classy fragrance, but not so fancy you couldn't easily wear it to the office or somewhere casual.

I got a sample of this because I have and love Dark is Night. I don't get any resemblance to Dark is Night, but I do agree that this is a more wearable TF Black Orchid. Black Orchid can be temperamental, but Torn melts with the skin. This one depends on skin chemistry from reading the reviews. On me, it's dark and witchy smelling, very decadent. The lasting power was great; over several hours later I could still smell wafts of it. I had Black Orchid at one time and could never enjoy wearing it, but this is a nice substitute. Dark, earthy, with an almost truffle-like base, it's a great unisex vanilla. If TF's Black Orchid put you off, you'd like this one better.

Warm, sweet, subtly spicy, very vanilla but not cloying or overly sweet. It is approachable and light - good for a daytime scent. The warmth and coziness remind me of Fall and Winter. I read in an article that this is Michelle Pfieffer's go-to and she also mentioned wanting to try mixing it with Windows Down (much more citrusy) - which I will try next to maybe brighten this scent towards a Spring/Summer feel. This one smells like simple but spicy vanilla on me - would lend itself well to mixing. Vanilla might not be everyone's thing, but this scent is easy to like, comforting, and still feels quite special.

Just blind bought a bottle yesterday and immediately fell in love. I adore dark and mysterious scents and this is the perfect embodiment of sensual/witchy vibes. At first spray, I was welcomed by a smoky incense aroma drying down to a sweet and creamy vanilla scent. I was nervous about the longevity because of how quick HR Flora Carnivora disappeared on my skin, but was pleasantly surprised as it lasted for a full day. In fact in the middle of the day I took a nap and woke up to such a pleasant smell on my wrists. The best way I can describe this is as a diet TF Black Orchid. This is my new signature!

Torn by Henry Rose is gentle, perhaps too gentle. I find myself nuzzling into my own wrists to take this lovely scent in, and simply cannot get enough. I do wish for more pillage and that it lasted longer. It’s purely intoxicating. The violet note is strong for me, and I’m not always drawn to violet scents. Rose typically gives me a headache and I cannot discern the rose in this. I ordered this immediately upon sampling it. I find that the Henry Rose samplers are delightful and I have loved each of them, though this was my stand out favorite. Torn: my bedtime story. Warm, subtle, intoxicating.

So interesting reading these reviews! I agree with those that say there are more notes in here. There definitely are. It’s one of the few perfumes that’s vanilla heavy the whole time. I love it. It starts out a bit spicier and more floral vanilla. Then it shifts into a jasmine vanilla (my fav) finishing in a warm woody vanilla. This is a scent that you will smell on your clothes days later. I love it. I rotate perfumes a lot, and this is one that when I pick up and older sweatshirt I think - oh what did I wear that day? This smells amazing. It’s always Torn.

I agree, Torn is quite reminiscent of Black Orchid. However, Black Orchid has a cucumbery-marine in the top notes, which is how black current sometimes reads to my nose- depending on the other notes. I do think the truffle note (in BO) influences how the other notes combine too; truffle adding a bit of dirt and funk. Black Orchid is definitely more “synthetic” smelling. Torn is deeper, a bit simpler, slightly sweeter, and has a more natural vanilla than Black Orchid. It is very much its own fragrance, and not trying to be a dupe.

There's something fruity and floral in the top notes - can't identify exactly, but it's there. Dry down is slightly woody, very vanilla, and patchouli. It's almost a praline finish, but not sweet - like buttery? It's very pleasant and I get loads of compliments when I wear it. It smells organic, not synthetic, and I like that the most. It lasts on me about 3 hours, which is normal for a "clean" fragrance. Sillage is average. I think the price is reasonable.

I like this scent a lot. I purchased the roller ball which I think will work well, as it is a strong scent with a large projection, as others commented. I can go lighter with the rollerball application. The longevity is great, but mainly patchouli scent left. I typically dislike patchouli, but I'm strangely drawn to this. So far I've had a great experience with this company and I'm thrilled they've finally created an EWG approved scent. Thank u, Michelle!

Full disclosure: I am usually lukewarm towards vanilla scents. I don't love them. But Torn completely changed my mind about that. It's not cloying, the way that most vanilla perfumes are. There's none of that synthetically sickly sweetness either. It's just a warm, happy vanilla, like when you are baking cookies in the oven. This perfume feels like a warm hug from your best friend. Or Christmas Eve by the fire. Just cozy. Perfect.

After testing all of the fragrance samples in the line, I selected Torn as my first full bottle. This is a spicy, edgy vanilla, and I love that the ingredients are clean. It lasts a full 7 hours on my skin. I am now eyeballing Dark is Night. That one is delicious too. But I picked up Flora Carnivora as my second full bottle because it's completely different from Torn, where Dark is Night leans similar (it's another dark vanilla).

Thanks to the discovery set, I chose Torn as my first purchase from Henry Rose. A lot of them are well-made, smooth, including this one. I have vanillas that are overpowering so I almost never really seek them out which is why I’m glad I got this discovery set. The notes in this one work together as an ensemble of ambery, earthy, boozy, vanilla. Nothing screams; they sing together in harmony.

I tried this and it's just ok. I'll be honest, I can't smell much of anything, just very faint vanilla. I'm so disappointed because the notes are right up my alley. I have Dark is Night, which I love, and I was hoping this would be deep and rich, but sadly it's not. Very fleeting on me, so if it lasts on you, that's awesome. I may try Char and see how I like it.

This is one of the best smelling fragrances I've bought in a very long time. It was a blind purchase and a highly successful one at that! It's a spicy scent that can be worn year round. And the best part is that it's not tested on animals and is clean!!!! Love love love this line!!!

When I inhale Torn, images of vanilla caramel velvet run through my mind. Strong enough to detect, but amazingly soft at the same time. Not sweet or amber-y, it is just the most delicious vanilla I have smelled in years. Thank You, Michelle Pfeiffer! Such a lovely scent.

Imagine a softer Black Orchid blended with Jimmy Choo. Vanilla and vetiver with a slight dirt creating a beautiful unisex perfume. Very pleasant on this cool 62F morning. Sexy but sophisticated on the right person. Good longevity.

I am just not sure about this. It smells like a dirty cookie? Like so good, but something in there is dirty and off....but so good? I can't stop smelling it, but I also don't want to buy a FB or travel size....sample is fine.

wow! i AM torn!! this is such a beautiful vanilla scent!! it’s like a cool clean vanilla scent, the vanilla isn’t too overpowering or sweet like the dave by henry rose. this is more of a fresh and very subtle sweetness.

This to me is a lighter, more affordable version of a Byredo perfume (either Casablanca Lily or Reine Du Nuit. I get them mixed up). Dark and sexy imo. Date night scent. The best I've tried so far from HR.

I bought the discovery set. I sprayed this and instantly had to have it. It’s sweet and earthy - in perfect balance. Michelle Pfeiffer and perfumers: You’ve outdone yourselves with Torn!

Black Orchid if it was good. Jokes aside, this perfume is delicious, much more toned down than black orchid with a mainly vanilla note. A slam dunk by Henry Rose like usual.

My friend and I definitely smell cucumber in this and that's not listed, so maybe it's the sample. But I love it because I love interesting forms of vanilla scents.

I could douse myself in this and live happily for the rest of my life. My husband, who professes to hate vanilla scents, love it and nuzzles my neck for sniffs.

Rich spicy vanilla with a hint of florals, great longevity. Love it! Unsure of how it would perform in summer, but great for all other seasons/occassions.

The combination of vanilla and vetiver gives off a grassy chocolate vibe. Very very nice.

Henry Rose scents are made with exclusively clean, cruelty-free, allergen-free ingredients. They are good-quality and nicely-composed, but are often reminiscent of other scents. Due to its listed notes, I expected this to be a simple woody-vanilla scent, and while this is true, Torn also bears a striking resemblance to the more complex Tom Ford Black Orchid - I get smooth, sweet white florals, a patchouli-chocolate accord and (I'm pretty sure) a truffle nuance, all on a balsamic base. The vetiver used here is high-quality, multifaceted and hardworking, its complexity alongside the vanilla giving the Black Orchid quality to this scent. Torn is sweet from initial spray, with boozy vanilla evident from initial spray. It becomes smooth and balsamic as it settles, permeating this scent throughout. I get a creamy white floral texture, with a some soft orange blossom nuance evident to my nose. As it develops, I get a woody, earthy quality, grounding the vanilla beautifully. The vetiver follows, woody, grassy and dry, adding an earthy counterpoint to the vanilla. The truffle note is certainly not as pronounced as in Black Orchid, but the ghost of it is here, perhaps due to the vetiver alongside the creaminess and balsamic vanilla. As it develops, the patchouli comes the fore, balsamic and chocolate-y alongside the vanilla. Again, I don't know how this is achieved using just vanilla and vetiver, but it is delicious, if subtle. The amber base becomes more evident as it develops, smoothly balsamic and increasingly musky as it dries down. The woods linger, complementing it to perfection. Sillage and longevity are moderate - this has the best performance of any HR scent I've tried. It is a unisex take on vanilla, and is light enough to be transeasonal. Torn is a lighter, more abstract take on Black Orchid (that is not headache-inducing), as well as being a road less travelled. It is not unlike Char, also from this house, but is a superior unisex vanilla scent. My favourite Henry Rose so far. 4/5.

Torn and Last Light are my two favorites from this house, and they, along with Char, Queens & Monsters, and Dark is Night all share what I'm considering the Henry Rose DNA: an unexpectedly earthy patchouli or vetiver base under a more conventional feminine top. Maybe that's just a fruity chypre, idk. It's an interesting combo and one I find myself drawn to. I was reading these reviews of Torn and saw several comparisons to Black Orchid, to which I was like no fucking way, but then I took a deep sniff and I don't NOT see it. They have a similar overripe tropical fruit quality in the opening, but that's kind of where the comparison ends. Torn is primarily a slightly sweet vanilla fragrance, whereas the vanilla in BO is a more subtle part of the ensemble. BO is one of my holy grail fragrances, so it's not surprising I'd enjoy Torn as well, but forgive me for being a little skeptical about comparisons. Anyway, if you like the other HR fragrances I mentioned above, you may like this one or you may not need it because there is significant overlap. I enjoy wearing this to bed because it feels comfy and enveloping and luxurious. Longevity is moderate to good, and projection is close but definitely adequate (I don't feel the need to inflict any of my perfumes on people more than a few inches from me).

I haven’t tried many clean fragrance houses but I have sampled nearly all of the fall-woodsy Henry Rose scents & torn was a top contender for me. This isn’t a fragrance I’ve worn enough times to garner any compliments but I do like it. There’s something enchanting about this and I can tell you why. All of the Henry Rose scents open with a green note and they linger in the background making them perfectly unisex and perfect for year round. I appreciate it much more because of that detail. Torn in particular is really similar to Dirty Vanilla by Heretic. Honestly, they’re not bad. Not powerful like most designer & niche houses but it’s a fragrance to be reckoned with. Lots of people here seem to be a little prejudiced towards clean fragrances but the fact is they don’t smell bad, some are even pretty good—particularly this one, dark is night and char. The other ones, the popular ones, like Queens and Monsters fell a little bit short for me. In conclusion, I’m not sure if I’d want to smell like this all the time, could be a layering agent. Not bad.

It's Maison Louis Marie's 04 Bois de Balincourt but with vanilla and some floral notes (and none of the dill/pickle smell that some people detect in BdB and in Le Labo Santal 33). I've tried the Rich collection samples from Henry Rose, and there's a top note I don't like in this one and in Dark as Night that's kind of sour. But the dry downs, especially on this one, are great. I'm not sure why the notes for all HR scents in Fragrantica are incomplete (maybe they were posted before the full copy was released?), but here's what the Henry Rose website says about this one: "TOP NOTES: Freesia & Muguet (Muguet Accord), MIDDLE NOTES: Rose, Violet & Jasmine (Hedione, Phenyl Ethyl Alcohol, Ionone Beta), BOTTOM NOTES: Sandalwood, Musk, Patchouli, Vanilla Bean & Praline." The florals hit hard at first and then die off quickly for me, leaving those delicious base notes to linger. I'm never near people these days, but I think projection is pretty light, and this one doesn't seem to last as long as the others in the sample set.

This has the Dark is Night DNA with its patchouli/vanilla base. I like patchouli and thought I wanted a vanilla patchouli perfume to use as a base layer for some of my floral-forward perfumes. I bought Dark is Night, and it was too rich and heady for my taste. Not a horrible fragrance, but cloying right out of the gate. With a similar base, Torn has the same potential to be cloying, but it’s a toned-down, lighter version with multiple florals in the top and middle. As it dries down, the florals, especially the rose, outshine the base and stand out the most. Although it never became a rose-dominant fragrance. I enjoy this phase. I’m not a fan of strong rose perfumes, and this one works for me. Sadly, I think this would have been the better choice than my original purchase of Dark is Night.

Wow diet Black Orchid is so spot on. I am revisiting my discovery set from last summer. I don’t remember trying this. It’s soft and a little sweet and has that tint of funk that B.O. carries so beautifully. This is much more transparent though. Green violet is the floral that stands out the most to me here, but you definitely get some airiness from the freesia and LOTV. The base is sturdy and always present. I love the dark earthy patchouli and vetiver and add in the dusty sandalwood +vanilla combo and it just works. It’s also giving a bit of Santal 33 (I guess b/c I am getting sandalwood and violet) and yes there is vanilla coursing through this perfume...but its not overly sweet on me. This is easily unisex.

This is a great vanilla for people who, like myself, aren't massive vanilla fans. Here the note is devoid of any semblance of sweet baked goods: it's definitively vanillic, but the vetiver adds a balancing dose of earthiness. The vetiver has none of its usual arid, grassy qualities. I love pungent vetiver, but here, its effect is largely smooth and woody, so much so that I would have guessed this to be a straight vanilla/sandalwood composition with something vaguely green in the background. It's not particularly unique, but as a "white t-shirt" scent, I like it very much.

So many missing notes here... TOP: Freesia, Muguet MIDDLE: Rose, Violet, Jasmine BOTTOM: Sandalwood, Musk, Patchouli, Vanilla Bean, Praline Delicious spicy floral opening that tamps down much too quickly. Dry down is still really nice...beautiful florals on a vague woody base. The vanilla is a ghost - present, but only just. Nothing like the very present creamy vanilla in Dave; while that one is a warm, edible gourmand, this one is paradoxically earthy & chilly. Interesting & kind of entrancing. The name is apropos, as I am truly torn about my feelings on this scent.

This is a better version of Santal Vanille by 7 Virtues. Its very similar but to my nose Santal Vanille has a bit of a cigarettes undertone and thankfully this does not. This starts out as a nice mix of Vanilla, Patchouli, and Sandalwood. As it dries down the violet definitely comes through and the Sandalwood becomes even more pronounced on my skin. Definitely a sexy, kind of dark feminine fragrance to me. There's something about Sandalwood in fragrances that always smells a little bit like BO to me but since its so well balanced its kind of a good thing in this.

Reminds me so much of Alkemia Come to Me, but as an EDP. Looking at the notes on the Henry Rose website, it makes sense, as they both share rose, jasmine, vanilla, and musk. Whereas Torn has praline, Come to Me has sugar/sweet notes, but the overall effect is the same. That said, Torn is pleasant, pretty, and opens very similar to Dark is Night, as they probably both use the same vanilla, but the drydown is quite different, with Dark is Night being earthier and a little fresher. One of the better performing samples on me from the discovery set.

The vanilla in Torn is reallly reallly sweet. Maybe a bit too sweet for me...but damn if that vetiver note isn’t totally captivating me. I can’t stop smelling my arm. This is like a delicious vanilla soda or aperitif. Torn reminds me of Encre Noir, but in a ballet flat. Does that make sense? Encre noir wears a sexy spectator heel and Torn is in a French ballet flat with toe cleavage. It would also be great for layering. I am going to try this with an amber fragrance, maybe Prada amber. Something that could use a little drop of sweetness.

I have a travel size of this I'm really liking it! I don't smell any of the floral in this I don't think. I mostly get vanilla, patchouli, praline and musk. Kinda weird that most of the notes are not listed on here. I see the similarities between this and Jimmy Choo by Jimmy Choo now that others have mentioned it. That's a perfume I love so I don't mind. I don't agree with the comparisons to Black Orchid at all.

I don’t get any floral notes. It’s potent; one spritz is plenty and lasts all day. A spicy vanilla gourmand, warm and yummy cookie musk.

I almost didn't try this scent because of the comparisons the black orchid (a perfume I wore when I was young and now makes me nauseous.) This scent surprised me in a positive way. This is much lighter than TF BO, it was vanilla and green on opening (two things i usually avoid in a scent), but they balance so well. Sadly, I became nose blind to it mere minutes after spraying.

I ordered the Henry Rose sample set, and this is the one I purchased--but not the full size, the travel. I think many of the Henry Rose scents are very strong on vanilla, which is not something I thought I'd like, bt something about this one appeals. It's a bit complex and a warm scent--I don't think it is as heavy on the vanilla as some others of the brand.

Torn smells almost identical to Santal Vanille by 7 Virtues to my nose--though this is a bit sweeter and creamier than my 4-year-old bottle of Santal Vanille. Santal Vanille used to be a favorite though, so I do like this: it's an unexpected vanilla that works. A little sweet, a little woody, a little earthy and a little smoky from the vetiver.
