Dirty Hinoki

This is happiness in a bottle. I love Encre Noire so I was very intrigued with this fragrance based on everything I saw. I'd say the comparison to Encre Noire is undeserved. Dirty Hinoki is like the fun, playful, sexy cousin of Encre that you would never think is related. I say the similarities between the two begin and end with the citrus notes. I love the usage of it in both of the fragrances, the smell elicits a joyful and uplifting feeling within me, yet the citrus are different and the rest of their compositions share no commonality. I agree that Dirty Hinoki has bit more of a "Lemon" flavor but its sweet, like a Verbena Lemon or maybe Yuzu. I still detect a hint of orange in the Hinoki as well but in contrast Encre has a pure Sweet Orange identity that as I said elicits similar response but its distinctly different. The wood elements are light on the senses yet evocative, like walking through a cypress and fir tree forest on a crisp sunny day breathing in the fresh air. The "wood" smell isn't really what the scent reflects, its more of the whole tree itself, the leaves, the bark and a bit of moisture in the air. Reminds me of Spring. There is a crispness and yet warmth to it as well. This scent is not heavy but don't assume that it's weak either. I easily can smell the scent all day with a single spritz, and more will do a lot of work, however it isn't necessary. This Fragrance isn't for impressing someone with an expensive smelling cologne from a fancy house. There is no snobbery, pretention or assaulting of the olfactory system of others with this fragrance, which some people won't like. This is one of the most pleasant colognes I've smelled. It isn't really meant to make a strong statement so much as a wonderful, purposeful and inviting experience you will find yourself coming back to repeatedly with a happy thoughts of an adventure you never truly went on. In my opinion, this transcends what a cologne is and pushes the idea of what it can be. It opens a frontier to an experience that brings you to places you've never been before rather than just being a way to fish for compliments from others.

Really enjoy this. Packs a good punch per spray but at no point during the wear does my heavy hand get punished with cloy. I have a niche story that I feel gives me a layered insight into the word “dirty”. I spent a good chunk of my childhood on a ranch estate, with my father’s business associate and various caretakers as room mates. The business assoc. was also an sensei for judo so he had an actual dojo to take care of yet I don’t think he ever used soap. His gi and other garments just went to the hot wash with minimal detergent and then sun dried. Blankets, canvas tarps, thrifted clothes, even the guys hair, etc all shared this sun bleached aroma that didn’t feel dirty or dingy perse, just not conventionally sanitary. Dirty Hinoki reminds me of that guys lifestyle. Like someone who regards their body care just a step above primitive and that’s thanks to hot water and sunshine so not a particularly spiritual person who reeks of patchouli and what nots. For the record I do like that sunbleached aroma and texture it leaves the garments and dirty Hinoki asking price I would not argue against- thoroughly satisfied.

Was gifted a bottle from a good friend. She said the chemistry of this particular scent had a bad skin interaction on her but for myself, who loves a woodsy, unisex, green scent it was so so perfect. Faint touch of almost a smoky campfire running through the center. Reminds me of running on sun-warmed cedar chips on the playground in early springtime as a child. Just a beautiful realistic outdoorsy forest fresh scent. On myself, dry down is reminiscent of a luxury spa or high quality time spent in an authentic woodfire sauna with a clean faint vanilla lotion vibe. Just beautiful. Sits close to the skin, so don't expect to announce your presence with this one. Bottle is a quality glass spray free from frills, nice solid cap (much like the rest of Heretics line). Wish they'd have something a little more imaginative in their bottle design, but the neutrality remains true to the unisex appeal of the scent overall. Would probably be a great light summertime scent for anyone who enjoys the smell of the outdoors.

This is a beautiful fir forest smell with a touch of sweet lemon and a sprinkling of nutmeg. At first, though I found it an appealing scent, I wondered if it would’ve been better as a candle than on skin. But with the change of seasons I’ve completely changed my mind and I love wearing it (though it would still make a wonderful candle too!) It’s a perfect scent for the transition between summer and autumn, especially if you live in a climate with warmer fall weather. The lemony pine is still light and refreshing enough to feel good on hotter autumn days, but the addition of nutmeg also evokes a bit of seasonal shift. This is my new favorite for heatwaves in September and October. But it really would be lovely and wearable throughout the year. And definitely a unisex scent.

This is smooth, soft hinoki with sparkles. You're in a forest in Japan on a summer night, and you're a magical being or it's a magical forest, or both. Devastatingly however, the magic only lasts five minutes. The way this disappears is almost interesting -- like it was never there at all. Even sprayed on fabric it goes pouf! in a very short period of time. Even layered -- ive tried it with Chanel Eau de Cologne, Creed Royal Oud, and yes -- sensational five minutes, but then it slips out the door leaving its friends behind. A shame bc otherwise it's full bottle worthy: unisex, anybody, any season, any time of day, but the poor longevity lets it down.

this fragrance is soooo summery to me, I don't get everyone saying it's a winter scent. it smells exactly how I picture a studio ghibli movie to smell like, especially my neighbor totoro or spirited away (specifically the bath house). this fragrance is soooo beautifully woody, grassy, and citrusy in all the best ways. it works so well on a hot humid day because it blends with the sweat and gives you this really nice, almost sexy, skin scent? (I don't know how to explain it but I hope you guys get it.) I got the 5 sample pack for the sole purpose of trying out nosferatu but dirty hinoki easily is the best out of all of them lol.

It has a smooth lemoniness that I love. It is unique, but quite expensive. I am considering buying some version/size of this. It comes in 15, 50, and 100 ml bottles. Got the Discovery set and this one was my favorite by far.

This is a great scent. I love evergreen and woody scents, so this peaked my interest. I got a sample in their sample set and this was the first I tried. It gives you an immersive pine forest vibe. A walk through a mountain forest. Really beautiful and fresh woody. With a slightly sweet (but not overpowering) twist, maybe from the amber note. The sillage is not huge but still moderate, maybe within arms length or slightly beyond. Definitely test it out, if you don't like pine notes you won't like this. Leans more masculine in my opinion due to the dry woody scent, but if you like pine anyone could pull it off.

I was starting to think I didn’t really love pine/juniper scents. Although, I loved Kiehl’s Pine Musk so much. I had a breakdown when it was discontinued. I have tried a few to fill the void over the years, but have hated all of them. Smelled too close to cleaning products. Dirty Hinoki is a revelation. Fresh, clean, full of personality. I do really wish that these natural perfumes lasted longer and projected more. I would like other people to get a whiff of this delight. I can see how this is not for everybody and it is not a safe blind buy. I bought a sample on eBay and am going back for a full bottle.

Armani’s Bois d'Encens. ...This is exactly what Dirty Hinoki smells like to me, just with the sliiightest hint of green. The opening is a bit louder than the Armani but they’re practically the same scent five minutes later. The Armani definitely lasts longer but for Dirty Hinoki’s price in comparison, you can afford to reapply every 30 minutes. Overall, the other reviews nail it. Dirty Hinoki certainly is a lovely scent - but it isn’t one of a kind... but, if you’re looking for a cheaper alternative to Armani’s pricey incense, that’s not a bad thing.

Wearing this today, so zesty and clean! Nothing out there like it that I know of. If you don't like the sound of zesty pine with some woody lemon, you'll hate this. I absolutely love it, I got the discovery set and immediately loved it, same with the wife. I bought a bottle. Plant based but has some decent longevity. Pretty linear but I like the mid dry down. Probably not a safe blind buy, but this is no powerhouse fragrance. Most would probably enjoy you walking by with it on.

Dirty Hinoki smells like the cool shadow of a pine forest in a warm day where you keep catching the faint scent of incense from a cabin just out of view. To me, this is a summer hike through the mountains, simultaneously warm and cool. It’s a very fresh pine-forward start, but mellows quickly to let the incense-y notes gently shine. It doesn’t smell like any other perfume I’ve come across. It’s very singular as a perfume, so while I love it, I don’t recommend buying blind.

I love this scent. A winter hug. Woodsy and sweet and a touch ambery. I love wearing this around the holidays. It reminds me of the lemon olive oil cake my mom makes. Dotted with chopped rosemary and lemon zest with a crisp sugar crust. It's not overly sweet or gourmand but it still brings to mind my mom's signature confection in a way that makes me feel safe and warm and loved. Nothing dirty about this just delicious, magical Christmas woods. Very "cottagecore"

This is so so pretty but I do wish it projected more and lasted a bit longer :’) I first sampled it in the form of Heretic’s hand cream, and I loooooved it. The first notes that come out on my skin are like those bright green new-growth cedar tips, and a sweet lemon. The nutmeg comes out quickly and hangs around for a long time, before everything dries down to a subtly sweet sort of nutty resin. It only lasts maybe 4 hours max but it’s really really pretty.

This perfume isn’t anything like I expected it to be. I knew it would be woody and aromatic just by the notes listed and the comments, but you can not imagine it’s delicate, soothing beauty unless you smell this for yourself. Smelling this is like taking a calming, meditative walk through a beautiful and peaceful forest. I just cannot explain this scent and do it any justice. It is probably the least perfume like scent I have ever had.

This is a beautiful smell, I gasped on the first spray. The way you want a real Christmas tree to smell—fresh, cold air, green and piney but grounded in a warm spicy base and brightened by that little hint of lemon. I would make this my #1 smell if it wasn’t undetectable on my skin after 30-60 minutes. I’m heartbroken that it goes so quickly! I have to apply it almost hourly to keep the scent around. Gorgeous, but short lived.

On paper i thought this smelled good. Just like "trees" but good. When i sprayed it on my skin it was even better! The citrus really came through along with the nutmeg. This scent comes alive on skin and I'm obsessed with its crisp woodsy scent. It isn't super strong and very unisex. It's great alone and seems easy to pair with other scents. I can see where the lemon pledge comments come from too but I don't get that from it

This scent started my love for Hinoki and other wood centered fragrances. Projection is ok and the longevity is lacking, but within its confines it can tell a story. To me this fragrance is chopping fresh pine on a clear day in the winter. The citrus and resin give a sense of coldness and the Hinoki comes through as fresh. Although it may need a few resprays throughout the day it’s worth it.

This is love at first sniff for me. Beautiful potent pine opening followed by soft lemon and thyme. The dry down is very similar to Saint Julep from Imaginary Authors but without the boozy notes that kept me from loving that one whole heartedly. This is incredibly sexy to me in an authentic and vulnerable animalic way that I adore. Makes me feel like I’m wet, nude and alone in the forest.

Open your cottage shudders, let in the morning light. A cobblestone path to a little witchy cottage in a beautiful surrounding like something Bob Ross would paint. It’s a bright and fresh scent for someone who typically prefers mysterious and woodsy scents. It’s perfect for a scent to wear to the gym. I love the lemon and to me a sweetness with the fresh. Green witch vibes for sure.

I adore this perfume. It is my daily go to, with a fresh crispness and sharpness that is versatile for any situation. Whether in the classroom, work, or a night out, Dirty Hinoki works for me. It smells like a delicious, sweet celery in the most complimentary way possible. I am also so prone to fragrance induced migraines, but heretic has never wronged me. I love the scent!!!

I obtained this in a heretic discovery set. It is so wintery and lovely. When settled, I immediately imagined the snow fairy scene from Fantasia - fairies landing on pine, cypress, and fir trees. Then floating down making intricate patterns on the ice. This is a great perfume if you enjoy tree scents. (I do think I deviate from others here, I see it as cold and wintery)

A beautiful rich scent. I was not expecting it to be so warm. There is a light lemon top note but quickly gives way to cedar and pine. It becomes woody and spicy, and for whatever reason I sense something almost lactonic on my skin. Have no idea where that comes from.

Not quite what I’d expected from the notes or reviews I’d read. I was hoping for a forest walk type of vibe. Dirty Hinoki for me is a yoga studio / wellness retreat scent in a bottle. Very nice regardless, just not what I was aiming for.

Smells straight up like a woody-citrusy essential oil blend, but lasts a little bit longer than one. This would be a great scent for outdoorsy or hippie types.

We are stepping out of the intensely smoky and volatile territory of Poltergeist and moving toward a fragrance built around meditation and clean, spiritual wood with Heretic Parfums’ Dirty Hinoki. The star of this composition is Hinoki, a highly revered Japanese cypress known for its bright, lemon-scented woodiness, often associated with temples, traditional Japanese baths (onsen), and purifying rituals. However, this is Heretic, so the inclusion of the word "Dirty" immediately suggests a subversive twist. We aren't expecting simple, pristine wood; we anticipate the clean, luminous aspects of Hinoki to be contrasted sharply with something earthy, dark, and rooty. The central question we face is this: Can Heretic successfully balance the serene, citrusy brightness of Hinoki with a grounding, "dirty" element to create a complex, wearable wood scent that still feels both spiritual and deeply rooted? Let's take a peaceful yet grounded journey into this fragrance and find out. Opening: The opening is aromatic, woody, and citrusy. The primary notes I perceive are Hinoki wood, lemon, cypress, and fir, with the Hinoki wood and lemon being the most prominent. True to the name, the Hinoki wood takes the spotlight from the first spray. This is the first time I'm encountering this particular wood note, and to me, it comes across as dry and smooth. The best way I can describe it is like the wood used in a dry sauna: woody and dry like cedar, but distinctly different in tone. Following the Hinoki wood is the lemon, giving the opening a bright and uplifting zesty citrus accord. It is not overtly loud and does not overwhelm the focus of the Hinoki wood, but rather sits behind it, providing a clean tone that aligns well with the "sauna" vibe I initially got. Next up are the cypress and fir. The cypress adds more woodiness, but with a green and slightly peppery nuance. Lastly, the fir lays down a final layer of woodiness in the background, characterized by a distinct evergreen "Christmas tree" type accord. Overall, I do get a general sense of meditative and temple-like calmness from this initial phase, which fits the fragrance's narrative perfectly. Dry Down: The dry down undergoes a stark transformation, becoming sweet, woody, and spicy. The primary notes I get are Hinoki wood, nutmeg, ambrettolide, and frankincense, with the Hinoki wood and nutmeg being the standout notes. The Hinoki wood is still the star of the show with the same smooth and dry "sauna wood" accord. However, it is now joined by a sizable dose of nutmeg, giving the dry down a wonderfully warm, spicy, and sweet accord. This is followed by the ambrettolide and frankincense. The ambrettolide serves to further deepen the dry down with a warm, balsamic, and ambery tone. Lastly, the frankincense adds just a touch of balsamic smokiness on the back end of the fragrance. There's still that same meditative, temple-like quality in the dry down, but the added depth from the balsamic and spicy notes makes it even more interesting and evocative. Performance: The initial projection within the first hour is strong, easily reaching out about six feet. Sillage matches that with an easily noticeable scent trail. After about 3–4 hours, the projection had died down to about 3–5 feet, and the scent trail was noticeably lighter but still perceptible. At the 7–8 hour mark, the fragrance had already become a skin scent, suggesting a functional lifespan of about 5–6 hours. This performance is consistent with most other fragrances I've tried from Heretic Parfums. When to Wear: Dirty Hinoki is a rich and warming fragrance suitable for fall/winter, but could also work during the daytime or evening. The scent profile is both simple in its presentation yet rich and deep in its manifestation, making it a fragrance that could be worn casually, for formal occasions, special occasions, or even as an office fragrance, thanks to its reserved and calming nature. Blind Buy: Hinoki wood isn't a note most people are familiar with, so it's hard to call this a safe blind buy, as it has such a novel note as its highlight. However, if you are a lover of woody fragrances, this is a must-try solely because of its unique and meditative character. Final Verdict: Dirty Hinoki turned out to be a much more interesting and dynamic fragrance than I imagined it would be. The Hinoki wood accord was a new and delightful experience for me, perfectly fitting the spiritual and meditative narrative of the fragrance. It also showcased the biggest shift from opening (clean, citrus wood) to dry down (warm, spicy, ambery wood) of any Heretic Parfums fragrance I've tried. Based on scent profile alone, this is one of the rare occasions that I consider the price of the fragrance to be fair—it smells amazing and highly unique. I would actually consider purchasing a full bottle of this, had the performance been up to my standards. The longevity, clocking in around 5–6 hours, just isn't persistent enough for me. I simply can't justify spending nearly $300 on something that won't get me through an entire workday, even if it does smell amazing. Solely for this reason, I will not be adding Dirty Hinoki to my personal collection. If they ever do a parfum concentration or "intense" version of Dirty Hinoki, I'll definitely revisit it. It took me a few tries to like this scent, but I grew to like it a lot It is a solid herbal take on a forest/hinoki inspired scent. It's sappy, fresh, airy, herbal, and I would argue is fairly unique. Is it really hinoki? Maybe not so much to those used to real hinoki oils, but the overall perfume does remind me of wood and cypress and forests overall, leaning very very natural, warmed by the sun and dry summer air. Very poor sillage and longevity, but it is a mostly natural scent. This is more of a personal meditative scent, not something I would wear going out as it will be gone by the time I reach my destination. But I enjoy wearing it after a shower, working at my home office. I also highly recommend layering it with CDG Hinoki. It layers like they are missing pieces for each other.

I got this as a free sample in my Nosferatu order. As soon as I opened my package I smelled a wonderful woody smell and thought "that's weird, I thought Nosferatu was more floral" but inside I found a card saying my box was fragranced with Dirty Hinoki. To my nose it smells predominantly like cedar with hints of herbs and lemon. On paper I know that sounds like a cleaning product, but it doesn't come off that way. It really smells like taking a walk in the forest. Where many woody scents lean dark and spicy, this one is more fresh and realistic without being overpowering. On skin it doesn't last very long, by two hours I really have to stick my nose in my arm to smell it, so this would be good for people who like subtle scents or work in an office where you can't wear beast modes.

I quite enjoyed this fragrance. The pine note was quite powerful and often surplanted the other notes, but the citrus keeps it quite fresh and forbids it to be too woody and sappy, instead playing with the thyme, cypress and cedar to give it a lighter more herbal twist. Its fairly realistic in that it gives the feeling of walking into a wooden temple instead of walking into a coniferous forest. You would think with that name that there would be a more earthy vibe yet this was very squeaky clean, it may come off as quite pine-sol ish to some, but I personally enjoyed the "natural cleaning product" vibes it gave. My issue despite how pleasant it is is that this last for 0.5 seconds and has no sillage, which basically makes it an extremely overpriced body mist...

We rented a log cabin up in the Rockies one March in the absolute middle of nowhere. This smells exactly like when I’d sit on the deck outside in the literal clouds and just breathe in the piney mountain air that’s clean enough to hurt your chest. It’s a very brisk, wintery smell that’s cold and fresh without mint/eucalyptus/etc and woodsy without being spicy or dark. I want to try this again in late winter/early spring, I feel it’d go really well with those bracing chilly mornings. UPDATE: This is a really good gym scent, very refreshing and invigorating without suffocating me mid-run lmao. In general, I tend to reach for this when I want to wear SOMETHING but don't want to go too fem or heavy... Very strong as a unisex everyday fragrance

Okay.... do not blind buy this first of all... this is a very polarizing scent. I liked the idea of it before I bought it and I had a hinoki candle (Voluspa) that I liked but girl.. this smells just like that candle (Gilt Pomander and Hinoki). Lemony opening. My first impression was lemon cakes and cigarettes. Like your grandpa smoking outside at your birthday party, and you also have lemon flavored birthday cake. I was NOT a fan but I find if you get a whiff of it in the air it's a very pretty resiny lemony Christmas tree scent. But when you smell it up close where you spray, it's straight up cigarette/vaporub. Use sparingly and layer this one girlies. Not for the faint of heart, but it can be appreciated.

I was so addicted to this fragrance because of the earthy citrus notes and the sun-kissed skin vibe. There’s a slight touch of lingering smoke, a little like when someone tries to cover up cigarette smoke with perfume. I love it. For almost a year I couldn’t figure out why Dirty Hinoki feels so nostalgic to me. Today the memory was unlocked! This smells almost exactly like this men’s hair product from American Crew which an old lover from over a decade ago used to wear. This scent is throughly unisex, with a subtle sexiness that doesn’t project and doesn’t particularly last that long, but it’s so energizing and uplifting that I can’t help but continue to sniff my wrists until it dissipates.

An earthy lemony pine, bright and sexy while still smelling like a natural environment. It's a really strong scent, the sillage isn't that crazy but the scent itself is intense. It's a little headache-inducing if I'm not in the mood for it, but not at all because it's synthetic smelling or floral or too sharp. It's the kind of 'fresh' that smells right out of the shower yet maintains an earthy green dirtiness at the same time. The lemon does fade a bit after some hours but never goes away completely, it always keeps some of that brightness. Completely unisex as well! Not a signature scent or anything for me, but so glad to have a small bottle of this in my collection.

A magical fragrance! Another reviewer described this as a lemon cake frag and it totally changed the fragrance for me. It's like the blue or gold dress debate... sometimes it's completely piney and forest-y fresh, other days I smell sweet lemon cake. I prefer when I experience it as forest-like. The lemony pine is reminiscent of Byredo's Gypsy Water, however this one is much punchier and less "faded" smelling. As with most Heretic frags, the longevity isn't great. For this reason I keep a sample size in my purse to touch up half way through the day. Edit: now I can only smell the cake interpretation, ended up selling it.

Yum, this is so citrusy and coniferous - you don’t get wood, you get needles and fronds. I like wearing this when I’m a little out of sorts because it puffs up throughout the day with wisps of sweet pine and fir and lemon tea (like the Bigelow ones!), it’s refreshing and centering without being heavy, it really lifts my spirits! Layer it with Smudge if you want it to be more grounding, the Mars-grade gravity in that scent combination could ground you into the core of the earth (which sounds great sometimes ngl)

I enjoyed this! I thought that the profile was very lovely - initially was very strong green scent but then dried down to a lovely damper tone. Unfortunately, two things undercut the positives of this buy. Firstly, the projection was incredibly weak and it faded quickly. Secondly, there are a hundred scents with this profile that are virtually undistinguished from one another, and this is one of them. I think one could find this exact scent profile, with more complexity, and with a more reasonable price-point.

Sadly it doesn't last on my skin AT ALL!!! I was so upset realizing this because even when I put lotion on before spraying it just doesn't last any more than an hour or two, not to mention it doesn't travel much farther than the skin. If I were to comment on the scent itself, however, it is an absolute hit for me. If you enjoy pine as much as I do (a lot) this will no doubt be something you reach for often. The nutmeg is also more prominent than I was led to believe, though I don't mind it much.

Dirty Hinoki is a bright, aromatic take on a woody fragrance. The lemon is more prominent than one might think, and it's brightened by some beautiful artemisia and thyme. It also has an appealing touch of sweetness that is evocative of sap. The effect is cooling and bright but also delicate. This reminds me of walking through a forest during broad daylight, rays of sun shooting between conifer branches. The scent clings close to the skin and isn't very long lived, but it's quietly beautiful.

Such a powerful green woody scent. What I love about it is that it's not diluted with any citruses or fruits. Instead it's a straight pine and fir with almost oud-like hinoki base. The hinoki is deep, dirty, slightly animalic and wet. It's resinous and slightly sweet. Such a unique scent that's hard to describe in one paragraph. I was definitely blown away and I kept it for my husband. It does lean masculine, but it can also be considered unisex fresh and woody scent for the summer.
