Voodoo Lily

I didn't know what to expect given the polarising reviews but I am very pleasantly surprised. To me, this is a lovely daily wearable scent with an inviting unisex character. On my skin, it opens with a delicately woody floral landscape. From the beginning the potentially masculine-leaning nuances are detectable, but they balance beautifully with the sweetness of the geranium. The bright aromatics develop soon after, without being too screechy as they mesh with the frankincense. The floral sweetness, the tingling spiciness from the pepper and the juniper accords start to fade after around 15 minutes, leaving room for the softer, almost creamy lily and rose notes. The woodiness becomes the center piece and mingling with the incense it rounds its profile, creating the cozy mood of this fragrance. The flowers are noticeable, albeit subtly, but still contribute to the overall softness of the atmosphere. On the dry down it has a very safe, clean-leaning scent while still maintaining a unique edge to it. I can compare it using a niche-fragranced fancy fabric softener, in the best way possible. I can still detect the lily and a touch of the rose, but it settles into a primarily woody profile. It is still somehow bright and fresh, like the scent of a pile of recently shaved wood chips in a room that had incense burning a day prior and now is decorated with freshly harvested flowers. To me this has a calming effect without being overbearing. I love sniffing my skin before going to sleep after a day of wearing it. Comforting but confident, fresh but cozy, with both masculine and feminine tonalities. I did not detect any potentially repulsive notes, get a headache or perceive it as being sharp in any of the phases. Would love a full bottle after finishing my vial.

One of my favorite shops in Salem, MA, Nocturne had a bunch of Heretic fragrances on display and ready to test. Out of the six perfumes I sprayed, THIS was the absolute best by far. It was love at first smell for me. It opens with a very strong cedar note (which I love) that lingers for a few seconds before that black pepper starts to spice it up which eventually leads into the rose on the initial dry down. After a bit, that patchouli comes through and lingers for the rest of the wear but I can still smell the cedar any time I move my arm towards my face! My boyfriend loved it on me so much that he bought me the travel size right then and there! Here’s to hoping I get a full size for my birthday :)

One of my favorites from Heretic is Jasmine Smoke, which I first sampled from the Rhubarb Thief set. I was bothered by JS being a limited edition, but then I tried Voodoo Lily and found it similar enough that when JS goes away again and I run out, I won't have to worry too much. This isn't a neg, I'm into the smokey sweet bubblegum-like floral. On first impression, Voodoo Lily does seem to have a little more complexity to it, which tracks, as it has more notes. I do prefer Jasmine Smoke's drydown because its much more smokey/heavier than Voodoo Lily's. I will compare these side by side soon to get a better read, but I don't think they're twins. Sisters, definitely.

Oooh! I like this! The lily with the rose mixed with frankincense and myrrh is absolutely gorgeous! I like incense florals so this is absolutely perfect and divine! I just wish it stuck around for longer. The price really does not match the longevity. That's the only issue with Heretic that I have found. When it comes to their most gorgeous floral scents they just do not stick around long enough to justify dropping 130+ dollars for a full bottle. Very unfortunate. I will be looking for this on discount.

I created a fragrantica account just to review this perfume!!! I've been searching my whole life for a signature perfume, and I finally found it in VooDoo Lily!!! Absolutely love it. To me, it is a mix between a sweet floral and a earthy/piney/incense scent. Beautiful! Lasts the whole day on me. I can even smell it on my clothes for days after. This perfume gives me Mugler vibes if you're interested in that type of scent. A complex, earthy, witchy smell.

I really, really like this one. Definitely has that dark-like scent to it. The first spray is spicy but has that patchouli mixed into the beginning. Then the spiciness pretty much fades and it becomes a great soft floral, woody fragrance. This one and Nosferatu give off similar vibes in terms of having that gothic/dark scent, but Voodoo Lily is a bit more likeable for most.

Second review because it's my second bottle. This has become my favorite scent. I get the cedar, geranium on first spray then the patchouli lingers. I've had one person tell me it's too sweet but I get so many compliments wearing this. Im a 40 year old guy just for the record.

I absolutely love this scent. I'm surprised no one mentions the geranium. It's the strongest note for me. A green spicy goodness. The patchouli is second for me and rose at the back, but the geranium and patchouli are what stand out. I get so many compliments on this one too.

This was included in the discovery kit i got from Heretic Parfum and I lowk hated it when I first got it because I felt like the rose was way to much, but now I'm a big fan. I love a good woody floral. I could see myself either buying a full bottle of this or pistil whip

this is a lovely perfume. it's dark and sweet from the roses and patchouli yet playful and clean from the geranium, lily, and frankincense. there's something musical about this fragrance, wear this while listening to cocteau twins and ride out the senses!!!

this makes me smell like a middle-aged bisexual man who works at a vintage store and likes goth music nights at the local club. strong banana laffy taffy scent at first.

i tried this again after a couple of months and love it. smells like burnt sugar and flowers

Smells so floral once it dries down on my skin, I love it

I was trying to figure out what a lily was supposed to smell like so I googled Voodoo Lily Plant, and found out that the Amorphopallus which is a deep purplish red giant phallic corpse flower that resembles a Calla Lily on steriods, smells like a rotting corpse. Also according to fragrantica black currants smell like cat piss, so I am pleasantly surprised to find that I kind of like this. I tried another Heretic scent (HAXEN) which cast such a death spell on me, that I feared for my nose hairs trying this one, but they are still intact. I detected nary a whiff of piss or rotten flesh, although inline with the occult name, you might expect that without even knowing the scent profile of its namesake. It has lasted several hours and is quite strong on me. It does remind me a bit of Lily of the valley, a fruity sweet note, patchouli, oud, sandalwood and incense. It’s all there. I wish the top motes lasted a bit longer...it did touch something in my scent memory bank that gave me a little sense of being haunted in a good way. I couldn’t get into Nasferatu because it reeeely smells like mausoleum and funeral flowers—-and yes it gives vampire, but like the movie, this is not a sexy vampire. I was about to give up on Heretic, but I think I will keep trying.

I got Voodoo Lily as part of a sample kit. It is surprising in that the cedar note doesn't blow up on me and turn horrible and sour. The Oud comes out more strongly and that is a note that works well on me. The florals are lovely, I particularly love Lily notes, but they're very strong. I've tried it twice and it's a very strong scent that gives me a headache. I like it though and want to try again to apply with an even lighter hand. I love black current peppery perfumes and wish that note came out more strongly on me. I also wish I got the earthy forest notes others report. On me, Voodoo Lily is a strong, woody, slightly spicy very strong Lily scent. It's nice but I liked Black Salt and Nosferatu a lot more. I'll try my Voodoo Lily sample a few more times. I like it well enough that I think sometimes down the road in a few months I might invest in a bottle if I have the money. I'm looking forward to seeing how it smells in spring or summer. Maybe winter isn't it's time to shine.

tbh the first thing I thought when I sprayed this was "damn this smells like hobby lobby". besides that, I do think this fragrance is really good. it feels dark but not too dark, fruity, herby, woody, and floral all at the same time. it's complex and charming, and works for so many different moods. probably my second favorite out of the heretic fragrances (second only to dirty hinoki <3)

Got this as an afterthought while grabbing Nosferatu and it turned out to be a real winner. I love the way this starts woody and then melts into rose colored smoked patchouli. Makes me feel like I’m the owner of an antique shop who might also deal in spells and charms when the mood suits her.

scent of an 80-something year old who goes to marches with the “i can’t believe i still have to protest this” sign. it’s very pretty, it also smells 200 years old. it reminds me of the ghost tour i took with my fifth grade class on our field trip to gettysburg, heretic oud is so haunted.

Dark, moody floral. The scent of a vampiress. A musty, old world scent that evokes a foreboding castle w/ bats flitting around the towers & moribund black roses littering the fields. Inexplicably, I like it. (No, I'm not a vampiress. Yet. 🧛🏻♀️)

i liked this one but i ended up giving it to my mom because it was too similar to pistil whip for me and i get paranoid wearing anything lily around my cat. my mom loves it. it's a warm smoky floral, very unique

Interesting scent, have a large sample. Not sure if I would buy a large bottle, but it is very unique. Very woody with patchouli and a little floral.

A heady, highly original mix of dark, smoky black currant, frankincense, and heavy patchouli.

I feel like there are some aspects of this scent that are pretty, but something about it makes my nose curl. It's a warmer floral, something in between "Pistil Whip" and "Coeur Noir" by Heretic, and also straight up bonfire smoke. It certainly carries some elements of the thick, hazy scent from the anthers of oriental lilies, but because of that I find this scent quite suffocating. There's nothing to really cut the warmth or smokiness, so it makes this scent quite dense and heavy. The pretty floral aspect wear off quite quickly and you're left with something muggy, but maybe that's just on my skin. Overall not something I'll be wearing, I'm just spraying the sample around the house and in my car to use it up.

I am inconsolable, my disappointment in this perfume house is immeasurable.. I just got back from a boutique in Salem, MA that sells Heretic so I was able to test a bunch of different fragrances (never smelled Heretic prior to this) and I’m not even joking, all of them ranged from mid to bad! They definitely make more unusual atmospheric perfumes rather than good smelling ones. That being said, Voodoo Lily was actually one of the “mid” ones. Unique feminine woody floral with a surprising amount of depth. I’m not even a floral lover and I think this is best I’ve smelled from Heretic so far.

I think I got an old batch or something because my bottle still has the old plain label, and I don’t get any of the woody notes at all. I’m stuck in the middle notes for hours and I never seem to get to the drydown. I blind bought this after they scented my package of Dirty Hinoki with Voodoo Lily, and it smelled floral and woody, just addicting. On my skin it’s all lilies, black currant, and rose, almost no frankincense or sandalwood.

It is a floral woody scent, I get no patchouli or frankincense on my skin at all, just the lily, currants, cedar, and sandalwood. I am slightly disappointed because I hoped for more based on the reviews. I love Heretic scents but this one is not my favorite. It's nice but not my kind of scent. I prefer Scandalwood, as far as woody florals go.

Truly an "ok" for me. I get lily, cedar and rose -- and something about it reminds me of my grandma. Not that this is a "Grandma" perfume, but definitely MY grandma. It might be interesting to layer this, but overall it's a little too harsh for me.

I really wanted to love this, but unfortunately it doesn't work with my body chemistry. My partner at the time told me I smell like rotting soil. :(

I'm surprised there are no negative comments. I'm in a long-long unsuccessfull search of a realistic lily perfume. First 2 seconds it is a burst of masculinity (patchouli). Right after that it is a good smelling maybe even expensive soap in a not well-cleaned public restroom. At least all sweet without sour or artificial nuances. As one of the comments to another perfume on Fragrantica said: it reminds a good smelling fragrance sprayed on the poop. I can imagine why lily note in perfumes has a fecal part: if to think about it long enough I can imagine the same from the pollen of a real white lily. But the whole composition doesn't smell as bouquet of lilies at all. Just something sweet and soapy. It's not that bad, because the drydown is pretty calm. But it is not a lily. At all. So I keep searching (probably for what is not existing).

I guess voodoo is overwhelming the lily. Upon spray, I get a blast of patchouli, then other notes follow, especially frankincense, woods, and maybe blackcurrant that adds even more sweetness. This really is quite a dense, sweet, forest perfume. I am still looking for lily. Not for me, and it leans more masculine. But I can see why many enjoy it.

*My usual disclaimer: after having COVID in 2020, my sense of smell slowly recovered to almost normal, but some things are slightly off. Take my review with a grain of salt.* It smells like bananas and licorice to me. Very vaguely fruity, candy-like, and sweet. But I don’t like it. It’s got a weird undertone to it. Not for me.

Just geranium and ammoniac black currant come through from all those notes, it’s a bummer (I don’t think florals are Heretic’s strength, I’ve tried almost all of them in sample form at this point). Jealous of the folks that get sweetness from this scent, it’s so harsh to me. :(

the rose in this sickens me when it hits my skin. I disliked every second this was detectable on my body. smells intriguing and quite beautiful on a tester but just absolutely nasty on my skin.

My least favorite perfume I have ever smelled. Nauseatingly sweet, thick, syrupy, cloying black currant. The florals are not fresh but overwhelming. The only perfume from Heretic I've not liked thus far.

WOW i'm surprised by how much i like this one. i love patchouli but know it's a divisive scent so am often scared to go full boar with my patchouli oil lest i put people off; this scent is PERFECT because it's quite patchouli-forward but is cut by the woody, floral, and incense notes. for me the patchouli note endured throughout my wear, while the lily and rose notes faded after a few hours to give way to oud/frankincense. ended woody and sweet—i'm always looking for a scent that smells like a catholic church, and the dry down on this one gave me hints of that. fun and sexy and immediately received compliments on it the first time i wore it out. i'm going to save up for a bottle :)

Very candy sweet floral. Unusual composition, vaguely reminds me of a Penhaligons perfume but I can't recall which, maybe hints of Duchess Rose? I can defintely pick up the oud and rose in this, I still can't pin the scent of patchouli which is funny because most of my perfumes have it so I must love it. There is also something bright/zesty/green in this with incense/wood/smoke. It is one of those fun compilation perfumes like Female Christ, quirky but this is more of the spooky end. I wouldn't buy it but it was nice to try in my 'Season of the witch' sample set. I thought I wouldn't like it at all as I am not a fan of Lilly but if I was given this I would defintely use it up!

Initial spray I can smell dark and seductive Lily but within a minute or two it disappears and I smell wood and maybe a tiny bit of incense. This kinda gives holiday vibes, like walking thru a Xmas market where the stalls are made from fresh cedar and a grandma is selling potpourri she made from the roses in her garden. I’m sad bc I thought this was going to be a vampy scent but it’s giving vintage vibes, like I’ve definitely smelled this in the early 90’s. It’s not bad smelling; it’s just not the one I’d pick up and wear when I want to don leather pants and purple lipstick.

Reminds me of Graphite by Mad et Len, except less familiar to Aventus by Creed, which I was kind of worried about. Absolutely love this one. There’s a nice smokiness to the woody heavy nature of this. On the topic of Heretic Parfum, I was expecting Nosferatu to be more intense than this one, but I personally prefer the richness and darker, yet still ethereal, feeling that Voodoo Lily gives me.

Mostly sandalwood with some lily behind. The lily smells like true, moist white petals with some indole, but over the top of that is mostly a woody sandalwood scent and not a really a floral. But it's nice.
