Amazone (2017)

I'm not crazy about the top notes of this simply because my body seems to project fruits like crazy...which is all well and good on others, but on first spray (on me) it comes across as a bit sickly sweet. But once the top notes fade some it's gorgeous. As Q80 said, it's a creamy narcissus and it's become one of my favorites. I love me some Hermes.

Amazone is a barely-there fresh cologne, green and aromatic with a prominent cassis note. It is very subtle - an olfactory watercolour worthy of Jean-Claude Ellena - but utterly elegant and somewhat restorative. I haven't smelled the vintage version, so I can't compare them, but this is timeless. Amazone opens with dewy, leafy green notes, paving the way to the fresh cassis. Cordial-like but not sweet, it is tart and refreshing. As it develops, a surprisingly creamy narcissus note comes to the fore, enhanced beautifully by the green notes and cassis. I get redcurrant here, adding more tart fruitiness. The green remains, hazy and becoming slightly powdery as it progresses. Dry vetiver creeps in as it dries down complementing the polleny, hay-like narcissus to perfection. It fades to a powdery skin scent, creamy and aromatic until final fade, yet somehow remaining transparent throughout. Sillage and longevity are moderate. Best worn in warm weather. A unisex aromatic cologne, this is an unusual yet understated alternative to a classic citrus cologne. Subtle elegance in a bottle. 4/5.

Narcissus, galbanum, vetiver and the dominance of those three on my skin are what reminds me of Estee Lauder Beautiful edp. This is just a bit more beautiful. Soft, comforting, and some kind of shy sensuality. A more grown scent than EL Beautiful, and with a bit more body and confidence. I personally don't get the fruity notes in this. I can't sort out the cassis either but I guess it's so well blended it just adds to the composition rather then stand out. Cassis is a note in beautiful aswell. I really do like this one, timeless and a quite easy wear I'd say. Well done as expected from Ellena. Nonetheless it is not for me. Too little that stands out. Drydown just softens the notes and minishes the sillage. Sillage somewhere between weak and moderate. Longevity more impressing: 9hrs on me.

Edit: this has been growing on me. It gets more beautiful with time! Not a full blown love yet, no compliments, but I like it! Original impressions: Definitely classic and vintage, does not seem to fit the times at all. I wanted it strictly because of the name, the imagery evoked, and the fact that I love Hermes in general. How bad could it be? it's a Hermes, after all. Well, I am rather disappointed. Not with the performance, that is surprisingly good for an edt by Hermes, they are usually fairly faint. But the scent feels unoriginal, quite similar to Chanel Cristalle and Chanel Christalle poudre, not the Eau Verde version. That one is citrusy and sparkling, while this is adelhic, herbal, woody, dry, and seems to have a ton of oak moss, even though it's probably a synthetic compound resembling that closely. You could swear it's the real deal. It's not sweet at all, and not fruity at all, I definitely can't smell any berries. Honestly, just oak moss, vetiver and narcissus. Simple, rigid, strict, antiquated, sober, the antithesis of sexy. Elegant but way too serious, it smells sad, like a beautiful watercolour landscape that lost its vibrancy, because of the passage of time, and now it's cover in a layer of dust. As time passes it becomes more flowery, more narcissus comes through, and more pleasant and feminine. I bought it at full price, since I couldn't find it discounted anywhere, and I can't say I am delighted with it. Hermes has much lovelier perfumes. It doesn't hold a candle to Eau des Merveilles, any reiteration, Galop, Hiris, most of the Jardin series. On the other hand, if you like this type of dusty, austere and serious scent, it does have surprisingly good performance on me, despite being the new version. Surely not a crowd pleaser. The bottle is classic like the Jardin series, and behind the red sticker you will see a rider on a horse, which is charming. In conclusion, the perfume is melancholic, beautiful, dusty green floral, and very passee.

It is obviously a Jean-Claude Ellena retooling of Maurin's original Amazone (which I adore). The quote from JCE obviously means that he had a hand in its reformulation...if that is indeed the case. I called the Hermes Parfumerie in NYC and when I asked for samples of Galop, Muguet Porcelaine and Eau de Merveilles BLEU the S.A. said "Um...there is no such perfume." I mentioned that I saw it on here and she said she would "look into it". So...either info that is not verified through the company or if it is genuine someone leaked the info BEFORE Hermes announjced the release... Either way it is great we hear about things first, I would just prefer it be from the company and official. I remember when Sauvage was ready to come out. There was a page and article here that SUDDENLY DISAPPEARED (I know as I went to show it to my mother) and then reappeared after the DIOR official release. I adore (as I have said) the original and have a decant from a dear friend from Down Under, and also a sample of the Rose Amazone (Les Classiques) and it is amazing...so if it is getting redone at least Jean-Claude is doing it (maybe Christine helped?) and I know that the original is/was available in FB size but no samples were available last I checked...and they are a company that usually keeps all current fragrances in stock (other than the Parfums or Soie de Parfums) that are available-maybe a sign THIS was coming? *shrugs* I will be calling the Hermes store back sometime today and will let everyone know what they said. :-) smell swell & be well... It was a parting gift from my mother that I took with me to the States in 1977 where I was employed as a nanny to three children in Louisiana. Unfortunately the couple that I worked for were deviants and gave me 4 months of hell but this perfume was a link to home and whenever I smell it now I am beamed back to the bayou with all its attendant memories. After the first spritz has fizzled out, it stays close to the skin. I don't find it dated or old fashioned. It is both luscious and dry at the same time. Its contradictions are charming.

I got this in a goodiebag I received at work (yeah they're generous haha) and I don't consider myself very picky with fragrances but I this one just won't grow on me. It reminds me of a walk in the forest on a rainy fall day, so if that's your jam you will LOVE this but for me it's just too "earthy" if that makes sense.

Creamy narcissus. This is fascination, it has that creamy texture of narcissus, galbanum, & cassis. It has vintage vetiver with slight cranberries. It is creamy and addictive. I never thought that Herme does have that superbly interesting fragrances like this one, "Equipage", & "Brin De Reglisse". I'm very impressed.

Classy, earthy, only very slightly, smoothly creamily green not sharp. Does have an old fashioned vibe purely because this kind of scent is not the current fashion, it's a bit 70s (the best decade bar the 90s.) It faded away very quickly though, longevity barely a couple of hours.

Perfectly pleasant green narcissus with a creamy wood undertone, but it's too weak and fleeting. Edit 2/26/24 It's 80 degrees F out and this smells a lot stronger. Nice hespiridic opening and the narcissus is both fresh and creamy. It reminds me a bit of Cristalle now.

This currrent incarnation is fresher, crispier than its vintage ancestors. I have the 2008 version and this one, love them both. Glad to see that Hermes doesn't discontinue its timeless masterpieces.

What do you mean at Fragrantica when you say that the perfume was composed in 1974 and launched in 2017? And it was never discontinued, as I know.
