Eau de Mandarine Ambrée

So, after being utterly unsuccessful in aquiring a bottle of 24 Faubourg Eau Delicate, I decided to try the new kid on the Hermes block - Eau de Mandarine Ambrée. Normally, the amber is not my thing; it just does not seem to work with my chemistry. This one, however, is different - it plays very nice! The initial spritz was like a burst of fresh mandarin, fresh, invigorating and totally go-go-go (a good thing for procrastinators, like me). Then came the sweet stuff, or, should I say the sweat stuff... That was depressing. I thought, "uh-oh, another one of those great on everyone else, but utter stinker on me" perfumes... But, not a minute later, the fruity amber settled in, in a good way - cozy, with that personal warmth hint, and not at all overbearing, or straight out unbearable. What a relief! I will be wearing this one after all! And, I think, I like it even better than Eau Delicate (which was perhaps too heavy on LOTV on me). The only issue I have with Hermes scents is that they just don't project or last, at least on me. The Eau de Mandarine Ambrée's sillage is zero; after less than an hour, I have to shove my nose deep into my wrist to detect it. Longevity is just under 3 hours. Where and when to wear this? Everywhere and "everywhen"! It is a subtle fragrance, and every-day scent, safe for the office and the first date, any time, any age. And you know what else? I think, the stuffy socialites who have all the money but no class, should put this in their Social First Aid kit ;)

Eau de Mandarine Ambree by Hermes was one of my first citrus heavy perfumes, alongside Guerlain’s Mandarin Basilic. It is a perfume that I have purchased during a late spring trip in Seville, Spain, good years ago and every spring I wear it, it takes me back to Seville and the multitude of citruses, (not just mandarins) I have seen everywhere around that city. So it’s one of those nostalgic perfumes in my collection... Even though since then I’ve discovered so many perfumes and niche brands, I love Eau de Mandarin Ambree as much as the day I bought it. It’s such a simple, light, warm, sweet citrusy, tropical fruity scent and has that photorealistic quality that other citrusy forward fragrances in my collection don’t, because usually those focuses on a mix of citruses or have a strong citrusy character just in the opening and then become something else. This is a natural mandarin smelling perfume, very true to how mandarins smell in real life, exactly like when you peel a mandarin orange with a hint of passion fruit added, grounded by amber. That’s it, nothing more and nothing less!! And sometimes beauty comes from simple things! Yes, the performance of Eau de Mandarine Ambree sucks and I don’t think I would repurchase it for current prices, but as long as my bottle lasts I will be enjoying it during late spring and summertime and relive those memories associated with the time I had bought my bottle of Eau de Mandarine Ambree...

For once, Hermès' note listing tells the full story, or at least most of it. Knowing Jean-Claude Ellena, there's probably incense or some obscure spice bubbling in the background in addition to the succulent fruit and silky amber, but the main impression here is mandarin - not sticky or overly sweet, but realistically juicy all the same, with a layer of passionfruit to make the whole thing smell as drinkable as it is wearable. Eau de Mandarine Ambrée is arguably the least esoteric of the Hermès cologne line, an exercise in the beauty of simplicity and the uncomplicated joy of sweet citrus done really, really well. The lasting power is perfect - not as fleeting as Eau d'Orange Verte (gone in 60 glorious seconds), but not one of those modern Weekend at Bernie's citruses that hang around long after the soul has left the body. And unlike most colognes, I can see this working in any weather. Mandarin has shades of autumn in its smell and taste profile, being a kissing cousin to the Christmassy clementine, and the amber base offers a surprising amount of body for this type of scent. Familiar but unique, hard to dislike, and affordable on discount sites (as of this writing). If you love orange, you need Mandarine Ambrée in your life.

Eau de Mandarine Ambrée is sweet and citrusy with faint greenness, it’s very smooth and never harsh on my nose. Mandarin and passion fruit combo seems to me bit like sweeter grapefruit, if I didn’t know it was those two I would have thought of it as grapefruit with more sweetness and something else that I could not get my nose around. As time goes the faint greenness that I got at the beginning fades away and citrus mellows so that the amber can be spotted better. This is straightforward spring/summer citrus scent, but sweetness seems to extend scents range to slightly colder days I would think it otherwise could do. Mandarine Ambrée stays in my skin most of the day, but then again most scents do. Sillage is ok, I get wafts of this throughout the day. It’s not one of those “notice me” sillages, but people close to you will notice it. Overall it’s well done sweet citrus scent that is bright and uplifting though nothing new or original.

What a pleasant fragrance! I was worried it was gonna smell too bitter or strongly of amber, but I was pleasantly surprised when I sprayed it on my skin. It smells exactly like a mandarine, with slight hints of amber of passionfruit, and somehow there's a faint note of vanilla too. It's super refreshing and perfect for those hot summer days! The longevity is left to desire, however. It lasted about 3-4 hours on my skin, with a very intimate projection. However, when I went outside (it was very humid), I suddenly could smell it on me, yet I only applied it to my wrists. The value is pretty alright, and the scent is unisex. 6.5/10. The scent is amazing imo, but the value for the performance is not good enough. For that price, I would want something that lasts longer or projects better.

Simplicity and radiance, perfectly executed. The mandarin opening is one the most cristalline and photorealistic representation of the juiciest, happiest mandarin which olfactory art has ever achieved. The temporal transition is masterful, with the fruity core simply and seamlessly bridging the sunny citrus to the light cozy amber. Likely, the extraction of the citrus oil was molecularly executed or some other artisanal witchcraft that only JCEllena can pull off. Smelling this makes my Sunday morning, but it truly can make me smile even by only opening the cap, or eyeing the radiant bottle, which in itself is such a lovely object to give some bright colour to any room. One of the few truly exceptional scents that fully speak to me. If you find a better mandarin please get in touch <3

For me, Happiness in a bottle. (perhaps Clinique Happy for adults!) Succulent, sweet, bright, tart, orange, but drying down to something like an 'amber' as per it's name. Mandarin can sometimes be a bit overly candied, but here it's a juicy brightness that sparkles with an almost effervescent quality in combination with passion fruit. Wheras other colognes in the Hermes line and Mandarin scents in general can go floral or solar or just vanish, M.A. goes it's own route. And though its overall experience is neither endless nor expansive it is also not as poor as some report. Moments of joy are naturally ephemeral— with Mandarine Ambree the moments are so uplifting and artfully constructed I can't help but revisit them over and over.

Really warm and sunny amber with orange and passion fruit. Couldn't get any more tropical! Smells high quality due to the organic and natural feel of the orange and passion fruit, pulpy and bursting with juice, almost tangible on your tongue and uvula flowing down your throat. The amber is really strong and powerful here and radiates so much solar warmth in the most vibrant orange golden hue! Sillage is remarkable during the opening, then slowly dies down within the hour. Longevity is on the weaker end of moderate on my skin. It is value for money based on the ephemeral but realistic orange + passion fruit accord alone. With the amber, it became an original and unique masterpiece worth at least trying once!

Like most offerings from this line, Eau de Mandarine Ambrée is very simple, and very, very good. I can see why it is compared to Orange Sanguine: the mandarin note in this one is wonderful, exceptionally juicy and lifelike, just like the orange note in Atelier Cologne's orange scent. And it goes so perfectly with the powdery, slightly candied sweetness of the amber-passionfruit combination in the background. Really delicious, and quite versatile too - light enough for summer but sweet enough for fall as well, and perfectly unisex. Longevity isn't bad either, for this genre: it retreats close to the skin after an hour or two, but there it sticks around for most of the day. Full marks!

Truest mandarin I know. So juicy and complete with the skin that you peel. It retains this character for a while but a beautiful amber joins turning it unisex. On me it is a bit too masculine for my liking but it does not deter me from wearing this gem. Highly recommended. This, Eau de Pamplemousse Rose and Eau d'Orange Verte are my favourites from the line for summer but the others are also very good. I wish I have them all. To me Mandarine Ambre is the scent of setting sun by the sea bottled. The epitome of it. It does not have incredible power but in the hottest weather it has the perfect strength. Lasts about 5 hours in summer

My issue with this one is mostly that it doesn't last. All of the other Cologne d'Hermes last at least two or three hours on me. However, as it is a cologne that is likely designed solely as a pick-me-up, I'm not really going to see this as a fault. As it is, it's a gorgeous passionfruit fragrance with a delicate mandarine rind (on my skin) and a delicate amber accord which truly feels like an Hermes fragrance. I think I still love it quite a bit and will keep my 15mL happily. I sprayed several sprays today because the 15mL atomisers aren't as strong as those in the full bottles, so that may make a difference.

This is such a beautiful twist on a classic citrus cologne. As someone who feels most at home in cozy amber and spices, I've really struggled to find a summer fragrance that feels authentic to me, but this is it! The amber is never cloying in extreme heat, the mandarin is delicate and refreshing, never sharp, and the passionfruit sits in the background, supporting and complementing the mandarin (which is good because I don't like sweet fruity scents on me). Overall, the blend of notes feels unique and fresh, both classic and edgy, both masculine and feminine. I love this!

Another delightful citrus creation I really enjoy! It's simple and linear, but it doesn't bore me. Right from the start I smell the realistic fresh and juicy scent of freshly peeled mandarins combined with the sweetness of amber. As it dries down the amber tones down the freshness of the mandarin a bit, embodying it with a warm and sensual (even slightly powdery) veil. I see quite a few complaints about longevity and sillage, but on my skin they are really good!!! I can smell this on myself all day without trying! Top quality! ♥♥♥♥♥

I love this scent so much I'm sad every time I wear it because it's so short lived. Needs to be sprayed on clothes. The truest mandarin you can find - I grew up with a mandarin tree in my backyard and have eaten my fair share. It's delicious. Try it - if you like mandarin you WILL like this, no doubt in my mind. But for the price, I'd hope for more longevity. But maybe I should stop complaining, accept the fleeting nature of Hermes summer scents, and enjoy it while it lasts.

This reminds me of my auntie Valerie - whom I am very fond of, no idea what her perfume is but it smells like a room that she is in. I guess that fits with the "childhood memory" aspect others have mentioned, there is something very clean and familiar about this smell, with a little twist. The mandarin became more orange blossom on me after a while but without that cloying element that usually makes me hate orange blossom scents. Will definitely consider buying this.

Loveliness. Fresh juicy mandarin married to sensual amber. It's the most realistic mandarin I've found outside of the actual fruit, and I'm always a little awed by that. When worn on a hot day, the sweetness of the passionfruit shines. It's a skin scent and I wish it projected, but I do, even hours later, catch a gentle waft of the amber emanating from my skin. It's a beautiful, uplifting scent and I hope it's never discontinued.

This one is delicious! First a juicy pulpy mandarine and in 10 min I can smell passionfruit quite strongly blending with citrus, slight natural bitterness, orange rind, included. Base is quite solid, has a bit of a depth, yet amber doesn't take anything away from fresh natural sweetness. The performance like usual for this line- not great, but good for a cologne. Really sunny and mouthwatering scent :)

The best mandarin impression. And very good amber. And genderless. Never masculine on me however a male can easily wear this. It is classy. And it is unmistakeably Hermes quality. After application I felt herbal company to amber and mandarine. So rich and excellent. With time it mellows. Great for summer. Thanks to amber it brings me marine fantasies.

Truly something so simple yet so perfect. The manderine just melts into the passion fruit which then transcends into a light and airy amber base. If you haven't experienced it before it's worthy of a try. Yes, it's expensive for an eau de cologne and yes, it doesn't last too long but most great things don't. At least you know you can re-spray! Lol!!

This one, to me, smells like summer mornings in the Mediterranean and it reminds me of my childhood by the Adriatic Sea. Quite lovely, though longevity is poor. When I had it, I reapplied several times throughout the day. That said, it's the best mandarin scent I've ever smelled. Literally like peeling mandarins, nothing synthetic about it.

This is a wonderful scent that reminds me of my childhood. It's just like the orange sweets that i used to eat when i was on vacation with my parents in France! The scent seems to fade away but every now and then you get a nice whiff of it again, hmmmm! It's a little sweet, fresh and tremendously tasty!!! A big thumbs up for me :-)

Yes, very similar to Atelier Cologne Orange Sanguine--This one I feel isn't as sharp/sour on the topnotes. Of the 2, I prefer the Hermes. I actually really adore this one for summer. It's a nice sweet scent but not too sickly sweet to me. Probably in my top 2 favorite summer scents at the moment along with Diptque's Oyedo.

This is truly lovely and may be what cements Hermes as one of my favourite design houses for fragrances. Just really simple and citrusy with a faint synthetic amber zing that really kicks into delicious territory. I don't know if passionfruit is really in it, but it smells like it...

I absolutely adore this. It's so fresh and unique, yet not in any way weak or 'thin'. It actually has a surprisingly full character, considering the very few notes contained in it. Smelt it and had to buy a bottle straight away - A must for any summer day for me.

Perfect rendition of fresh, juicy mandarine accompanied by amber that raises the temperature of the zesty fruits and reminds me of hot, golden sand. I think it's unisex enough to be enjoyed by a man but on me it's perfectly feminine, fresh and it screams SUMMER.

Im wearing this now. A very realistic mandarin accord with a warm spicy, almost incensey amber accord. Beautiful. Year round appropriate. I would especially like this for fall.

Opening with deeply saturated mandarin! The passionfruit lifts it back up and adds a delicate fruity touch. Bright, lively, sparkling non-sweet sub-tropical scent.

I don't know how they did it. Magic?? I only have five words for this juice: My. Childhood. In. A. Bottle. LUV ♥♥♥♥

Mandarine Ambrée has very smooth and natural opening with alive mandarine but in some seconds comes to the surface the equally strong note of amber which brings some warmness. Fortunately the amber is toned down, a summer type of amber smell. The two ingredients mix perfectly to a velvety smooth citrus scent for spring and summer. I can detect a mild and weak bitterness and a discreet pinch of sweetness. The passion fruit is here but not vividly. As time passes, it becomes more alive but stays forever at the background. In half an hour it becomes a mouthwatering mandarine scent.. not so fresh because of the amber note, but perfectly for warm weather. It's like you have some mandarines in front of you and some sweets, it's probably a fruit cake in a distance taking whiffs now and then. In my opinion it has some feminine qualities so it leans more towards women but it can be worn by men if you don't have problem with this. It's not overly feminine scent. Personally I can wear it. The sillage is moderate but quickly (it takes some minutes maybe 4-6) turns into a skin scent with 10cm projection from the skin. So I'd say, it's soft. The longevity is moderate to heavy which is absolutely remarkable for EDC concentration. Without exaggeration I take at least 6-7 hours of longevity as a skin scent. I wish they had this in EDP concentration.. It's not a cheap smell for sure but it's not for me because of soft sillage/projection. I like it a lot and I recommend to try it if you want a discreet and luxurious daytime scent for spring and summer. If anyone hears from Hermes, just make it a little stronger.. more sillage! You'll sell more!

Melancholic Cologne (Jean-Claude Ellena, 2013) Scentrack: Incognito - Summer's Ended Eau de Mandarine Ambree was released six years ago as a part of the Les Colognes Hermes series. The perfumer behind was legendary Jean-Claude Ellena, the master of meticulous fragrant touch. Although the name of the fragrance suggests a mandarin-based creation, personally I found it more clementine than mandarin. Clementine shares the same sweetness with mandarin, but possesses an additional green aspect possibly from a special kind of seeds. This clementine is hyper realistic, strong and has slightly synthetic touch. During 10-15 minutes clementine gradually morphs into sweeter and more tropical phase. I have to admit, if hadn’t looked at the note breakdown before, I wouldn’t identify it as passion fruit. This transition is very smooth and gentle. The parallel transition from clementine to amber-like base is equally smooth. I deliberately use the term “amber-like” because in my opinion the present is just some melancholic shades of amber. The clementine acquires some light touch of vanilla, and becomes just lightly sweeter. It is still a cheerful fragrance, but the present is some late summer melancholy. Like the summer is almost gone, and autumn is just around the corner. Summer loves are gone, and soon they will be forgotten. Eau de Mandarine Ambree is a very nice addition to the cologne genre, and a very nice work from the master of fresh and vivid fragrances. Rating: 7.5/10

Eau de Mandarine Ambrée is another simple, high-quality cologne centred around a main note, much like the other « Eaux » by Hermès. EdMA is focused on a photorealistic orange note, zesty and refreshing, not sweet. It is uplifting, as such citrus scents can be, reminding me a lot of Atelier Cologne Orange Sanguine. EdMA opens with the aforementioned orange, joined by passionfruit after a little while, adding a little tropical sweetness in the background. It complements the orange nicely, as well as being slightly unusual. Despite the slight sweetness, it is unisex. The amber in the base is sweet and smooth, as if there is a hint of vanilla present. It complements the orange beautifully, remaining like so until it fades. Sillage and longevity are moderate - this has better performance than the other Hermès « Eaux » I've tried. Simple, yet unusual and creative, this is an excellent orange-centred summer scent with better longevity than the likes of Eau d'Orange Verte or Orange Sanguine. Another superb composition by Jean-Claude Ellena featuring his signature light touch. Effortless elegance for hot days. 4/5.

Because of my love for Hermes perfumes, I blind bought this one during a clearance sale online from one of my regular vendors. It was unboxed and I remember spraying it for the first time when I received it and remarked where is the mandarin? I got mostly Amber and something very sweet so it must be the passion fruit. The crazy thing about this perfume for me is how long it lasts for an EDC. It lasts longer than many modern EDPs and no matter what perfume I am wearing, Mandarin Ambree makes it’s presence known immediately. The colour of the bottle is eye catchy so even when I want to ignore it, I find myself grabbing it and spritzing myself once or twice. Was it what I expected? Oh no. I expected something very citrusy in the opening. Do I like it? Yes I do. There is something about it that blends well on my skin with anything else I wear and it has become my daily companion, even though it is not my favorite perfume. So I am enjoying it despite the fact that it has no citrus opening.

I write my reviews for my own future reference. Opens up with what to me is so far the most natural orange tree or blossom scent, slightly sweet but remaining earthy and natural. The fragrance is relatively monotone, but this isn't necessarily bad. While the sweetness tip wears off, the amber and slightly base with a clearly orange overtone stay true to the opening. I can can still easily smell it on my arm 6 hours later, but I don't think it's longevity is the next level up. I smell this as ever so slightly masculine, over unisex. It is a nice charming, spring or summer scent that gets very close to my own imaginary fragrance. I can see layering this with something with a larger base to give an orange twist to it as well. The other fragrances in the series are nice, but for me this one reigns supreme, however it is no longer listed on their website, so who knows about its future. I nice daily fragrance while seeking something magical.

Juicy Mandarin with the Rind right away. The Passion Fruit to me doesn't come across as clearly passion fruit, just a sweet fruitiness. I don't get clear Amber necessarily, though it's there, but more a clean white muskiness. I'm getting some sort of indistinguishable and unlisted spice in the background. Pretty linear and simple, but it works. I got an unboxed tester for $50 and at that price, I think it's pretty worth it. I would definitely not pay the $132 retail price especially cause Hermes fragrances are usually excluded from sales and discounts in retail stores. Longevity is about the same as the others in this line, not that great, 2-3 hours depending on weather conditions. This is more of an intimate scent, since it's not a huge projector or strong sillage fragrance. It's refreshing on a warm or temperate day, just be prepared to respray or carry a decant.

"Eau de Mandarine Ambree" (EdMA) from the house of Hermes is one of those rare scents whose name very accurately reflects the actual composition of the fragrance. To me, EdMA is about mandarin orange from head to toe, joined by amber in the middle stages of its development. Thanks to its incredibly natural-smelling citric note, EdMA ́s sparkling and pleasantly invigorating, whereas the amber softens the whole composition and adds a pinch of sweetness to it. "Delightful", "joyful", "refreshing" and "calming" are four adjectives that best describe the effect this fragrance has on me. Being an eau de cologne, EdMA ́s longevity, sillage and projection are nothing to shout about, but while it lasts, it is a top-notch summer scent. EdMA is a worthy addition to the Hermes cologne family.

I have never owned or even smelt anything like this in a perfume until now.I've been wearing L' Ambre DM and Elixir DM the last few weeks , found this in a huge 200 ml bottle at a fantastic price so snatched it up without too much thought since I love the others so much and how can you go wrong with a little more citrus and amber!!!! Its a warm winters day today In South Africa and I'm wearing this Jem. Love the opening of sweet mandarin's and the amber warms this but ever so slightly ... it is an absolute delight in winter (sunny day at 22 deg cel) I can only imagine how gorgeous this is going to be in the summer. This is very potent for a EDC , more like an EDT. Hmmm I wonder what this will smell like layered with L'ambre ??

This week has been hot in my city and I find myself reaching for this fragrance more and more often. (Tepmerature approx. 27C/81F.) This is, in my view, a completely unisex fragrance. I ́ve been using it by itself, and I ́ve also been layering it with Paco Robanne ́s Lady Million, to tone down the sweetness of the latter and brighten it a bit, at a 2 MA to 1 LM ratio. I find the longevity of Mandarine Ambrée to be very good for a citrus fragrance, I don ́t mind having to refresh it every 3 or 4 hours; in fact, it is a pleasure to spritz often in this weather. Lovely to have it in my summer collection! I find it is most appreciated in very warm climates.

It starts with the bitter freshness of citrus, in a pure Cologne style, very close to l'Eau d'Orange Verte at this point. And it turns to a medicinal mandarin, in a good way. Something quite similar to Mister Marvelous by Byredo, but less aggressive. It slowly evolve being smoother, sweeter, but never too sugary or fruity. There is something warm in it, but nothing close to amber to my nose. Very persistent with a nice trail. And it ends with a discrete and abstract note of passionfruit. Very nice, very comfortable to wear. Rather manly (in my opinion) because of the top notes, but it can be perfect on a woman too.

As someone relatively new to the world of owning multiple fragrances, I treat Eau de Mandarine Ambrée as a kind of sensory reward, much like dessert, and as such it is a favorite of mine to wear on quiet evenings alone. I absolutely adore the blast of mandarin and it’s subsequent meld with the smooth, subtle amber. There are no rough edges here, and I think that is part of why I want to keep it to myself for now. I don’t know if this is something I want to smell like to other people. There is something to be said for personal pleasures though, and wearing this is sometimes the highlight of my day.

This is comparable to L'Eau de Tarocco by Diptyque. It's a little less spicy and slightly sweeter than Tarocco. It smells very comforting without one note being dominant. It blends nicely on your skin. I'm impressed with the longevity and sillage as well. Still going strong on my wrist after 4 hours, and I do smell it around me when walking around. Probably best suited for warmer weather, but as with all fragrances, wear them when you feel like it. Highly recommended.

Different, and has more longevity than other Jean Claude Ellena colognes. It alternates between zesty orange and sweet amber on my skin. I don't think I'll purchase a fb of this one though. EDIT: After wearing this more I've come to love it. Amber doesn't usually work well on me, but it's light in this cologne and blends very well with the mandarin. I like it more in cooler weather, somewhat unexpectedly - and I'm looking for a fb.

Opens with a saccharine mandarin that is prominent for a surprisingly large part of the fragrance's overall lifespan. I get vaguely tropical notes - not the usual sharp, sulfurous punches of passionfruit - that provides a nice transition between the mandarin and the sweet, slightly powdery amber. Great summer scent, but also suitable for spring and perhaps autumn. One of the more long-lasting offerings in this series.

It's a light purely citrusy scent. Fresh and natural mandarin smell. A product of quality. Reminds me of some Dior's citrus scent, Escale a Portofino, which is more complex of course. A little bit too sharp for me to be one of my top favorites, but what I like about it, is that it has that classic expensive Hermes feeling/scent to it. More of a expensive body spray kind of scent for rich people.

Bitter orange peel, fresh mandarine and soft amber with a hint of sweet passion fruit in the middle! This is a beautiful scent in the summer afternoon when the first autumn leaves are already changing. It's warm and bitter in a natural way. I think this unisex scent would be very sexy on a man. It's tangy!

Clean, transparent mandarine and amber. Both notes play richly recognizable tones that are complementary but unexpected in combination, like a euphonium and an oboe together. The longevity is good. It gets quieter throughout the day, but it remains true to the two notes many hours later.

Eau d’orange popsicle! Mandarine, passion fruit and vanilla: that’s how it smells to me. There’s something almost gourmand about it. Not the greatest longevity and is, in my humble opinion, overpriced for what it is, but it’s a nice, fun and refreshing eau de cologne. Worth a try.
