Terre d’Hermès Intense

I'll start by saying how much I like and respect Christine Nagel. She is one of the best in the business and I have enjoyed everything of hers I've got my nose on. But I absolutely hated Terre D'Hermes Intense at first. The opening of it is indeed very challenging and instantly reminded me of Oud Zarian by Creed in that it goes down so powerfully and the heavy coffee and liquorice accords come out swinging and dominating. In fact, it is hard to imagine a more polarised direction for the Intense flanker to have ventured into, compared to the TDH original. I've always associated TDH with grapefruit, vetiver, warm weather performance and a wearability that goes with anything. This is not that - at all. There is a teaching moment here though, my fellow fragrance enthusiasts. The lesson is to try everything on the skin and to have patience, for in these things, great and worthy gifts are often revealed to those wise enough to understand. So too it is with TDH Intense. I hated it at first, but I gave it a few good sprays on the skin yesterday and decided to give it some time to see if it was worth persisting with. Let's just say that fragrance can make fools of all of us, and here it made a fool of me too. I'm actually embarrassed to say how I felt about TDH Intense in the opening now. The coffee and liquorice are heavy and are borderline uncomfortable for about half an hour. The bergamot firefights as best it can but it is overwhelmed in the onslaught at first, although I get more of the black pepper running through this that adds a spicy dryness that I began to realise that I really enjoy. But seriously.... when that bergamot firms up, regroups and starts to advance this goes from a struggle to something genuinely beautiful. There's some zesty gingery zing in the drydown too. It pivots and changes breathtakingly on the skin. The liquorice and coffee work with the bergamot, ginger, spices and wood in a way you cannot imagine in the opening. It is so, so good. The way it all works together as one in the drydown just blows my mind. I implore you: get your nose on this on the skin and give it half an hour before you judge. TDH has never been a sexy scent, and coffee and liquorice aren't sexy either but this together is incredibly sexy. It is hotter than lava stone. I feel hotter just wearing it. It is just this hyper-refined, hyper-masculine, hyper-confident, hyper-addictive sexy fragrance that evokes TDH in a small but very tangible way, but is absolutely nothing like it at the same time. I cannot get over how Intensely sexy and sultry this is. Christine Nagel, I apologise unreservedly. This is actually f**king magnificent. I actually think the redemption arc here isnt TDH Intense, but of my own (new) nose. I was so, so wrong about this one. Layering suggestion: Ingenious Ginger by Goldfield & Banks as a top layer to ramp up the gingery zing. Three Word Summary: TRY ON SKIN!! Scent - 8/10 Drydown - 10/10 Sillage - 8/10 Bottle/packaging - 8/10 Performance - 8/10 42/50

For the first time in my life, I experienced a salesperson who more or less made excuses for the immediate first impression of the object I am evaluating. The lovely woman in question, an experienced perfume salesperson, insisted however, that I did not judge Terre d'Hermès Eau de parfum intense merely a few seconds after spraying. She even gave me two complimentary tests to continue trying at home, without me asking for anything. It therefore goes without saying that this could be a release that will be too much of a surprise for many people to fully enjoy it on its own terms. What an immense pity. Christine Nagel has created a masterpiece that certainly could have its moment in time – maybe not any time soon though, while many people still pit it against Ellena's original. But I urge you to put that reference away for a while and give it a serious try. This is a release that shares similarities with Alberto Morillas' Homme de café from the late 1970s. I remember that one so well, even though I was a child, because it stood so firmly out amongst everything else men would wear in the early 1980s. But alas, as is so often the case, the avant garde is easily forgotten and the notion of personal prestige of subsequent, more successful artists is often too strong for them to share their sources of inspiration with others. And even when they do, few in the audience care. When it comes to the scent itself, I have no idea what Nagel's references are and that is beside the point for me, really. What it gives me, is a near perfect impression of a French café or even Parisian brasserie around 10 in the morning. You are sitting down with something to read, perhaps some work, and the busy waiters passing you whirls up the air sending whiffs of coffee; a sweet hint of spice from the viennoiserie (bakery products) people have for breakfast; the ovens that are lit for preparing lunch, but not yet filled; citrus and fresh spice from the ongoing mise en place preparations from the distant kitchen. What it is to me, is a clear artistic idea and concept – at least how I perceive it – of refined civilisation, urbanity, conviviality that blends with the Terre – earth – in its most primordial state of fire and brimstone. But this is not like Gualtieri's Terroni, it is refined and a bit tamed, to make it more Parisian and, to me, more wearable. You can of course dismiss "the hype" and the idea that it *actually* smells of lava, but perfumery is like the theatre, like films and like books: it creates feelings and associations, it is not reality itself. The performance actually reflects the aromas too: Unlike the mentioned Terroni, you will, thankfully get some discretion, and good longevity, so that you can stay in your favourite brasserie for the whole working day if you feel like it. Don't be afraid to step outside either, it is well grounded and for every occasion, perhaps except in the height of summer.

I like this very much, in fact I like it far more than that! It's a love with this one, no doubt. The beautiful and recognisable Terre d'hermès note of that vetivery/woody essence of course but this time accompanied by stunning coffee, liquorice and lava notes with a very gentle touch of citrus. For a brand many consider designer or mainstream, this to me feels artisinal and crafted from the very first moment it touches skin. I find this scent hits the same spot that many men (and women) desire, often satisfied or quenched by the likes of a neat whisky, Cuban cigars or strong chocolate and the like. Hopefully you know that craving I'm talking about, the one at the back of your throat! What's known as an acquired taste perhaps! Obviously don't be drinking this stuff but once applied and worn, I found I got that very feeling once faded and again when trying to decide what to spray a day or two later! I imagine it's very much down to my individual tastes and preferences! It's distinctive for sure and this is a fragrance that definitely needs a test before committing to a full bottle, as you should with all perfumes really. It's not always that easy though is it! I think it's one of those aromas that if you like it you'll love it and if not you'll probably detest it, it seems to be divisive. For me I think it's refined and pushing the boundaries of generally available and affordable perfumery, but for that very reason it's a product that will only resonate with a certain type of person. Someone who enjoys strong stimulation through their senses whether Olfactory or otherwise! 😳 Performance is decent, I'm getting 6-8 hours with a noticeable sillage but the initial hour or two of projection is stronger than average. It falls back to around arms length for another 3-4 hours but detectable waves continue making themselves known for another few on top of that. I feel this is a male dominant scent but of course you like what you like regardless of gender. As said previously, if this is a fit for you then it'll really hit home I think! Probably for people past their early 20's and of a slightly more mature and timeless style but with an edginess. I've been wearing this in 25 degree plus temperatures no problem at all but im positive this will perform beautifully all year regardless of the conditions. Good value for something touching niche and excellent if discounted. Definitely a worthy buy for the right individual. Go and have a try, give it a moment or two. In fact, go and have a coffee or do a little shopping to see how it develops and and hopefully like myself it'll be an easy decision to add to your collection. Quite possibly one of the most creative and standout fragrances I've encountered from one of the big houses especially as its from a standard range and readily available on the high street. Distinctive and different but with a lovely charm and presence.

Well-crafted and balanced modern take on the classic Terre d’Hermès When I first tried Terre d’Hermès Intense in a fragrance shop back in April, I didn’t quite get it — it seemed too dark, rocky, and muffled. Later, I bought a small bottle and set it aside for late autumn, which turned out to be the right decision: the full potential of TDH Intense truly unfolds in colder weather, and it turned out much better than I was hoping for. The greatest quality of the new Terre d’Hermès lies in its multi-layered character that reveals itself in three distinct phases. Phase 1 (first hour and a half): It opens brightly with a spicy freshness and a coffee note in the background that strongly recalls Givenchy Play EDT (a hidden gem of 2000s men’s luxury perfumes, btw). The focus here is more on peppery accords, but it shares a similar brightness through the use of bergamot. Phase 2 (second to third hour): At that point, earthy and lava-like notes become prominent. They are not as off-putting or dirty as I was expecting; instead, it is more a continuation of the darker woody aspects of Terre d’Hermès Pafrum (which TDH Intense strongly resembles in the middle). Phase 3 (third hour and beyond): The base feels unexpectedly sweet and warm, shifting the spotlight to an almost realistic note of licorice, which lingers on the skin for a long time without becoming cloying or vanilla-soapy. I also didn’t catch any anisic undertones — it actually has more of a cinnamony vibe of Chanel Egoïste. Overall, Terre d’Hermès Intense is an intriguing and sophisticated fragrance with impressive longevity (16 hours+) and strong sillage. I don’t understand where all the hate comes from, because Christine Nagel has crafted a perfectly balanced composition that captures the DNA of classic Terre d’Hermès (both EDT and Parfum) but adds a modern twist — eclectic in the best way. TDH Intense feels like a love letter to Jean-Claude Ellena’s original triptych, more than any other TDH flanker in that regard. Surely, it has its flaws (projection isn’t great, and it isn’t suited for all-year wear), and I wouldn’t mind if it were a bit more experimental. Nonetheless, Terre d’Hermès Intense is another win for Nagel — who also created such unsung masterpieces as TDH Eau Intense Vetiver and H24 EDP — and a strong contender for the Best New Fragrance of 2025 title.

When a fragrance as iconic as Terre d'Hermès gets an update (or a new flanker), expectations are high. After all, the original Jean-Claude Ellena masterpiece has been the benchmark for sophisticated, mineral-citrus masculinity for nearly two decades. Terre d'Hermès Eau de Parfum Intense is Christine Nagel’s take on making it relevant for the contemporary days... and I think she’s done it. I’ll be the first to admit, my initial impression was lukewarm. I dismissed it as yet another flanker attempting to cash in on nostalgia or simply the original success. But after giving it a second try, I realized that this is the contemporary Terre d'Hermès we didn’t know we needed. It respects the DNA of the original while reworking it into something deeper, richer, and dare I say... better! The signature mineral-grapefruit opening is still here, but what follows takes the scent into uncharted (but not unfamiliar) territory. The addition of coffee and licorice pulls Terre into a darker space, vaguely reminiscent of the spiced, syrupy depth of Sauvage Elixir, yet without the bombastic nature. These gourmand touches don’t overpower the composition but rather complement the earthy vetiver and flint (or lava stone?) with an almost roasted, subtly bitter warmth. It’s as if Terre d’Hermès traded its airy, sunlit dryness for something more brooding and complex. All in all, this isn’t a reinvention, but rather a refinement. A modernization that feels natural rather than forced. The elegance of Terre d’Hermès remains intact. For longtime fans of the original, this might take some adjustment, but I believe it’s the Terre that truly moves the story forward after 20 years. And unlike some attempts at “updating” classics (Dior Fahrenheit Le Parfum, anyone?), this one feels like a genuine evolution rather than a side-step. I didn’t think I’d say this, but Terre d’Hermès Eau de Parfum Intense might just be the definitive version of the fragrance.
