1926 Turandot Puccini Absolu EdP

Very little attention had been given to HdP's Opera fragrance series, and I would postulate that this is because all of them draw heavily on classical concepts: heavy aldehydes, prim powders, baroque florals. 1926, a tribute to Giacomo Puccini's Turandot, was the standout for me, with its orange blossom glycerin soap translucency, Williams pear ester, and surprising juiciness in its initial stages. All the florals seem as though their fats have been saponified, and the end result is this near vertiginous wave of sudsy, frothy dianthus and jasmine in the heart. It feels as expressionistic as the opera that inspired it: it feels like cries of longing, the beauty of desperation. Nothing is fluffy or sweet, it's always one step away from dissonance. In some regard, it reminds me of that tension and resolve we find not necessarily in perfume greats of the 20s but those of the 80s: chypres like Paloma Picasso or EL Knowing. A rapier-green thrusting into ash-flick perseverance wrapped in dusty leather—this is especially so in the incensed Pyralone dry down. This is one worthy of more attention as its been lost in the torrent of HdP releases over the years.

Turandot 1929 has a bit of a vintage vibe but it’s by no means heavy. A beautiful combination of floral notes (daffodil, carnation, orange blossom and jasmin mix) with incense and a touch of leather. Incense is pretty strong in this one. Overall, it’s very unique and lovely. Like many other Histoires, it’s not blind-buy safe! Try before you buy.

Why do I have to fight with packaging at 0156hours in the morning? Because I am a fragrance addict... in the best sense of the words. This was my 2nd Histoire of the evening/morning that I was smelling. At first I felt annoyed that the fragrance wasn’t oriental, seductive, or modern even. Instead I got an IMMEDIATE blast from the past! I felt like I was sniffing something that gave me a 50 year old familiarity. My grandmother? My great aunt? I just could not get that nostalgic feeling away from me. Still... I was drawn to it. I was drawn to the green, soft, powdered, young yet old modernity (yes I’m aware of the contradiction... let me roll with it 😉). I’m literally inhaling this scent thinking of my grandmother. This is the definition of classy vintage. A little Chanel no5 and Gabrielle mixed together. I like it so far.

Do not like this one on me it smells like something I'm not sure even exists but can only describe s grape scented windex. I would love it if I was picking up on the soapy-ness other reviewers are noting but I'm not. It it screechy and artificial smelling on me which is really sad because I normally like HDP and felt safe blind buying this one.

The riddles are three, there is only one death" - Turandot 1926 opera by Giacomo Puccini I love Turandot the opera and this is one of Histoires de Parfums opera fragrance series the others include Carmen and Norma. Since Turandot is a Chinese legend, I braced myself for an Oriental fragrance, dense, heavy, exotic, and with a vicious bite. After all Turandot the Chinese princess had ice in her veins, she was the Princess of Death sending her suitors to their deaths by decapitation after they failed to answer the 3 riddles. But this is only a semi Oriental, with Oriental ingredients of incense patchouli and jasmine. There are no benzoins, myrrhs, sandalwoods and other Oriental touches. This fragrance is Turandot at the end of the opera when she declares "Father, I know the name of the Stranger, His name is Love". Her cold heart has warmed up and she is in love with the tenor hero the Prince Calaf. This is a romantic and warm fragrance of incensed flowers. The narcissus is the strongest accord, a white floral scent very fragrant and fills your head. There is also an equally potent carnation flower. It opens with a little orange blossom, however and it harmonizes with the fruit note of the pear. On me this smelled more of spring time with orange blossom pears and narcissus. Sweet floral smell. But due to the incense it keeps from being too sweet and too airy. It's a warm myrrh and there is also the aromatic patchouli which is in the heart of the scent and is very much it's own incense. It becomes only a bit smoky, not terribly smoky. The amber in the dry down keeps it clean and only a tad soapy in the end. An elegant leather accord gives this a musk. It's easily unisex and very aromatic at the dry down. It is an Oriental but not a major one. Very decent as an Oriental however. I would say they did a fine job of evoking Turandot.

I feel like 1926 really stands out amongst HdP's lineup. That's not to say that 1926 is my favorite of HdP's fragrances by any means, but there is something really unique about it that sets it apart from some of the other offerings. To be frank, there is something here that reminds me of some fancy glycerin soaps that my aunt used to have in the early 1990s. I think the initial soapy effect comes from the narcissus and jasmine, but the juicy sweet spiciness of the carnation/amber/pear combo really comes through in the drydown, creating a uniquely exotic and slightly vintage feel.
