Patchouli Antique

Please note this additional review is for Honore-Payan: Patchouli 1854. The perfume is not included in the fragrantica inventory atm. Having said that, I own both Patchouli Antique and Patchouli 1854. Both are beautiful but 1854 has taken the top slot for best in house. If you enjoy Antique, I recommend visiting the Honore-Payan website to research 1854. Patchouli 1854 – Center-Stage Solo Performance. Patchouli 1854 reveals the complex character of this solo star. I first encountered patchouli while sampling the offerings of NICOLAÏ PARFUMEUR-CREATEUR. Patricia de Nicolaï’s work is beautiful and Patchouli Intense is a much loved all-time favorite of mine. However, with every artistic expression, Patchouli Intense reveals the artist’s interpretation of patchouli, whereas Patchouli 1854 allows you to discover his intrinsic value – not an idealistic representation, but truly who he is. It’s oddly comforting to finally pierce the veneer to discover the natural beauty he holds. If I were to compare Patchouli Intense to Patchouli 1854, I would say Patchouli Intense by Nicolaï is walking through a blooming manicured garden early spring at first light as frost dusts the ground – your senses awakened to the announcement of new life and a new season while the dark spices of winter linger closely by, whereas Patchouli 1854 is walking through a virgin forest late on a fall evening after a soaking rain – hints of summer still persist but leaves cover the ground, the damp humid air fills with the aromas of earth, wood, and vegetation. It’s raw, natural, and enchanting. Patchouli 1854 is a treasure.

Thank you to Honoré Payan! Patchouli Original is a beautiful timeless vintage scent with exceptional quality. The opening burst of earthy chocolaty patchouli is wonderful and the dry-down is alluring. This was my first introduction to the house and I am grateful. Patchouli Original stays true to the name. Also, I ordered the 100ml Patchouli 1854 which is a different perfume from Honoré Payan. According to the site, Patchouli 1854 is "Our most concentrated patchouli. With this patchouli, we decided to return to the original formula created by Mr. Honoré Payan in 1854.This patchouli is aged in a tank for 2 months. Result a patchouli where the scents are more powerful and more concentrated." I was very pleased with the Original and excited to receive 1854. Patchouli 1854 list for € 45.00 and after the additional € 33.90 for shipping to the United States, the total cost was €78.90 EUR or $94.19 USD. Hopefully, Fragrantica will update the current Honoré Payan inventory to include Patchouli 1854.

Did you know that the house of Honore Payan was behind Les Nereides creations? They were producing all of Les Nereides fragrances until 2013 when they got into legal action against each other. It was all about Patchouli Antique which was commercialized by Honore Payan since 1977 under that name, but Les Nereides found it unfair when HP tried to trademark "Patchouli Antique" after their split. Now you know why the change of name... We are talking about a series of fragrances created over 100 years ago by Honore Payan! That's talking about perfume history! Other original Honore Payan fragrances can be bought from their official website at 35 euros per 100 ml including the original Opoponax!

I'm placing my review here, despite having the Nereides branded bottle; I detect no vanilla, amber, or oakmoss as is listed on the Nereides 2019 version of Patchouli Antique on this site. My bottle looks nearly identical to the one pictured here. This is a true dirty pure patch, oscillating between the odor of a wet, ancient basement and a delightful chocolate aroma. Soily, rich, and herbal-- I just love it. Worth every penny (yet I only spent about $40 USD.) Get the Honore Payan version, it's what I plan to do next time I need some of this. Plus, they have some other inviting offerings on their website that look delicious.

If you want the best Patchouli , here it is. Forget the tacky black and gold bottle and the stupid advertising about sexiness and glamour à la Tom Ford or à la Killian. You will just have the best quality and it's 38€ for a 100ml bottle. All they variation you will find on the Honoré Payan's site are good, the Patchouli 1854 is the most intense but i love the Patchouli Ambre as it's the closer of the original version of Les Néréïdes / Réminiscence's Patchouli. A super rich balsamic, ambry and gourmand patchouli sometimes reminiscent of a delicious mix of cocoa and caramel.

I used to have and love Les Nereides Patchouli Antique and when I 've read here (Thanks Audeline) that Honore Payan was the manufacturer I've ordered it straight away. It is true, they are the original. It's magical this juice, definitely my favourite patchouli scent. I also receive many compliments when I wear it. The first time I smelt it (in a Les Nereides store in London), it blew immediately my mind away. Any patchouli lover has to try this baby. Thanks Honore de Payan for making this beauty. The service from their website was great too.

I've just bought "Patchouli Original" directly from Honore Payan - I believe it to be the same (renamed) perfume as Patchouli Antique. It is a lovely soft, dusty feminine patchouli. Very nice indeed and what a bargain!

I have to test Patchouli Antique, named Patchouli Original now. But just received my First Honoré Payan order with Patchouli 1854 and 10 vials to test... First impression more than positive for patch nostrils. Thanks to Audeline for her posts here & on Beauté Test. And first impression confirmed: Patchouli original is good, Patchouli ambré is close to Montale's Parchouli leaves but lighter and Patchouli 1854 is even in 2020 a bomb, long lasting, chocolaty, very good projection. Exactly was I like and was looking for & expecting. Not Office friendly at all. LOL

In total agreement with @frankcrummit The Patchouli. The timeless! A beautiful patchouli. Beautiful work. A patchouli that is slightly earthy without being too much, quite woody, and slightly warm... Patchouli. Certainly very close to this hippie period that I give him! The one that brings me back slowly, to my 16 years in high school. When I was listening to The Doors, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Aphrodite’s Child...wearing elephant leg pants... A pure patchouli, bold and assertive. A wake and a balanced hold.

Treacly, rich and deep patch heaven - the work of people more interested in the quality of their work rather than trends, fads, advertising hype or commercial success. If you are reading this and wanting to build a library of seminal fragrances, begin here (and then move on perhaps to opoponax and lavender-based fragrances from the same house). They don't make 'em like this anymore ... although Santa Maria Novella's Patchouli comes close to achieving the same degree of purity and perfection.

Allora questo Patchouli è lo stesso delle vecchie Nereides.. Un profumo secco e legnoso,veramente bello. Appena spruzzato è balsamico e pungente,un aroma che sa di terra umida e cantina, ricorda qualcosa di antico e elegante. Il suo sviluppo è lento e duraturo,il profumo dona una tranquillità e serenità d'animo, è meditativo, solitario. Non pretenzioso, non vuole strafare, si sente attorno e nell'aura.

@Diana Alcantara : Yes, Honoré Payan used to be Les Nereides' manufacturer. What you can find today in Payan's collection is actually what was formerly sold under "Les Nereides" brand (i.e. pre-reformulation perfumes). That's quite an interesting thing to know especially when it comes to the (big) price tag difference ! ;-)

Absolutely adore this fragrance, regretting not buying more of it. I’m not as well versed in description but to me this is dark yet creamy and inviting fragrance. I don’t get woody as much as a dark vanilla, patchouli thst begins on a green medicinal note and quickly turns darker, not necessarily chocolate, but a deep vanilla. This is a bit of a shapeshifter on me sometimes where it can smell spicy or tobacco notes, but overall the creamy vanilla is enticing and inviting. Maybe more spring and fall scent, but wearing it summer nights got me like of prolonged hugs and compliments. Signature scent worthy and inshallah they ship to US soon omg. Oh compared to the EDT, also incredible and FB worthy as well, the EDT is a bit more metallic, more coumarin and feels a bit like fizzy cream soda. I will be buying both as well as 1854 (again, maybe my favorite) as soon as they’re available.

This is lovely. This is what I get from it: it's late at night, it's 1926. You're inside of a fancy bar, like the ones you still find in Paris. Everything is made out of wood, and lined with a red velvet fabric. You've had a few drinks. A window is opened nearby, and it's raining outside. It's warm, whilst also showcasing a bit of freshness, earthy but leaning on the woody side. Honoré Payan is such an underrated brand. This is high quality without the outrageous price tag. I'd say it's a must for a patchouli lover. I wish it was a bit more on the chocolate side (not the most popular patchouli opinion, I know!) but this is lovely.

Have this one in the Nereides version (same bottle different label). Its all very confusing, I do remember these being in the shops though, its not like its ancient history, lol. Remember loving the chewiness of this patch and its still going strong years later, got a tiny bottle for almost nothing for the memories and layering it with Coco edp today. What a winning combo.

@lilacdays I'm not sure Honoré Payan perfumes and the Néréides ones are the same. I used to wear original Impérial opoponax and reformulated Opoponax, and HP Opoponax is much lighter, much less resinous and vanilic.
